W
ow—another month has
slipped past, and I can’t
believe the progress! Our list of
RAD Racers is growing rapidly,
and everyone is busily planning
their events for the 2008 race
season. We have at least one
RAD Racer (Patrick Staropoli)
that is up for a community award,
in part because of his work with
RAD and the RAD Racing Team.

I just finished Lesson 12 at one
of the schools. They threw me a
little party and the letters they
gave me were amazing. I’'ll make
copies of some and fax them to
you.
One had me in tears. A young
lady stated she felt her life
wasn'’t worth living and was
thinking of using drugs, but
now has changed her mind and
thanked me for saving her life.
Others talked about how the
R
program has helped the bond
with their parents.
Although they were supposed to
do anti-alcohol ads, some did
anti-drug ads as well. I have a 20
minute video that I watched and
will get a copy from the teacher
to send to you. Some kids did
posters and got very creative.
These kids were great.
Have a great day,

Another new drug threat:
The hallucinogenic herb
Salvia
Divinorum
is
available and, so far, legal
in many states. Salvia is
native to Mexico and can
be taken in a variety of
ways, including: chewed,
smoked, or brewed into
a tea. The herb produces
hallucinogenic effects that
generally last for about an
hour. Eight states have
April 2008
placed restrictions on the
plant, and sixteen others
are considering restrictions.
Parents are still generally
unaware of Salvia, which is
much more powerful than
marijuana. It is relatively
cheap, at approximately
$30 per ounce on the
internet, and a liquid extract
version at varying strengths
(5x to 60x) can also be
purchased.
I think my knowledge increased a lot
more from when I started this program.
It was really good and it really helped me
know about what to do with my life.

Well last year I used to be all wild and
stuff until I met my sergeant and she
taught me that you can still be noticed
and still have good friends without
making bad decisions. My dad told me
that I am doing better this year and I
am getting better grades

RAD Racing Team
NCPRS introduced a new program called the RAD Racing Team. The RAD
Racing Team will provide local communities with resources to further develop the
team concept for winning.
We are seeking applications/partnerships for:
1. RAD Racers interested in volunteering their time to play a vital role in our
substance abuse prevention and life skills program.
2. Race sanctioning organizations willing to endorse our programs by offering
fund raising opportunities and incentives to participating schools and National
Guard personnel.
3. Race track owners/operators willing to offer an exciting, and positive
environment for our youth to visit, and provide fund raising events for schools
receiving Stay on Track.

With April 10-12 just around the corner, we are gearing up
for Phoenix! Travel arrangements are made, materials have
been shipped, and we are anxiously waiting to meet our
new team!
The two day training will provide the skills
necessary to successfully implement the Stay on
Track Activity Series. In addition, to support the
motorsports theme, participants will be taken on
two exciting, educational motorsports field trips.
Again, we are anxious to meet all of you and are
thrilled to have the opportunity to be working with each
of you this year!

Food City Family Race Night
2008
The TN Guard left quite an
impression on race fans from
across the country following
the Food City Family Race
Night. SGT Edmisten and
SPC Braswell used their Drug
Education Trailer as a tool to
discuss, with fans, the signs
and dangers of drug use,
seizing the opportunity to
answer questions and drive
the point home that “DRUG
FREE STARTS WITH ME”.
To top off the event, I was able
to secure a photo opportunity
with the honored guest that
night, Mr. Dale Jarrett (Driver
of the UPS Toyota).
Special thanks goes out to the

TN National Guard’s Captain
Williams, SGT Edmisten,
SPC Braswell, and special
guests Chief Scott Mason,
and his beautiful daughter;
K-VA-T
Food Stores’ Lisa
Croy-Johnson and Don Ayers;
WKOS’ John Bolus; and, of
course, Mr. Dale Jarrett, as
this event would not be the
success that it was without
them.

Evaluation Snapshot
By Melissa Rivera and Malena Doty
During the fall semester, NCPRS received data for 2,532 students from Alabama, Connecticut,
Delaware, Florida, Kentucky, Louisiana, Michigan, Nebraska, New Hampshire, New York, North
Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Vermont, the Virgin Islands, and West Virginia. Results from
this study demonstrated students’ increases from pre to post-program survey in:
• Media influences by 23%
• Knowledge of their peers’ normative behavior by 23%
• Knowledge of drug effects by 15.4%
• Knowledge of tobacco use by 32%
• Knowledge of alcohol effects by 16%
• Decision making through self by 4%
Additionally, during the post-program survey, students were asked to rate their ability to refuse
drugs after participating in the Stay on Track program, and 63% stated that they feel more
prepared to refuse drugs.
Read the next edition of the Evaluation Snapshot for details on Stay on Track implementation.
