RAD Interpreting Communicating with Deaf people Video Interpreting Services Together with Deaf people; creating a better future About RAD Founded in 1841, the Royal Association for Deaf people promotes equality for Deaf people through the provision of accessible services: • Information, Advice and Guidance • Advocacy • Children and Families • Youth and Transition • Employment and Skills • Social Care and Community Support • Community Development • Interpreting Video Interpreting at RAD RAD’s video interpreting service works to ensure that RAD is responsive to the different communication needs and demands of the Deaf Community. British Sign Language (BSL)/English interpreting has traditionally taken place with everyone in the same room but for short or emergency appointments and meetings, this can be difficult in terms of financial cost or finding an available interpreter. Via our video interpreting service RAD is able to offer access to interpreters for short conversations or emergency appointments via a webcam. What is video interpreting? Just as in face: face appointments, the interpreter will relay (interpret) the conversation into both English and BSL. The service can be used in two different ways: i. Deaf and hearing people in the same room, with the interpreter working remotely – Video Relay Interpreting (VRI) RAD Interpreting RAD Interpreting offers a high quality, professional and competitively priced service. No-one is in the same location; everyone is connecting remotely – Video Relay Service (VRS) When to use video interpreting • British Sign Language/ English Interpreters • Deaf Interpreters • Translation • Lipspeakers • Speech-To-Text-Reporters Our Booking Co-ordinators will advise on the best use of video interpreting but as a guide, we suggest that it can be used in the following situations: • Note-takers • Short meetings and conversations in the workplace • Deafblind Interpreters working with Deafblind Manual, Visual Frame, hands-on and Social Haptic Communication • Emergency situations/appointments • Video Interpreting • Accessing drop-in services • Basic information, advice and guidance RAD recommends that video interpreting is not used to replace face: face meetings – there are some appointments that will always need the interpreter to be in the same room as everyone.
