automatic spraying
Guidelines
In a medium to high production facility automatic guns deliver process control resulting
in minimal waste, maximum productivity and
consistent quality of the product. The result is
maximum profitability.
An automatic spraying installation can be assembled in
one of the following configurations:
•B
y moving the automatic spray guns: the parts to be
painted being either fixed or moving;
• By one or several fixed spray guns; in this case, the parts
to be painted move in relation to the gun:
- either by rotating (on automatic turntables),
- or by linear movement (generally when the parts to be
painted are small, very simple and with
mainly flat surfaces).
Such movements can sometimes be combined.
Control of automatic spray guns
Air flow
3-way valve
Atomization air
All Kremlin automatic spray guns work by pneumatic control.
Product
For operation, all you have to do is connect them up to a solenoid air valve or a three-way pneumatic valve.
Product feeding
If your installation comprises several spray guns, they can be
fed either in a closed circuit (A) or in an open circuit (B), this
last option being more practical when flushing or color-changing
operations are frequent.
By opening the valve (5), you empty all the hoses. There is
hardly any loss of fluid.
Use large diameter hoses and see that you do not have the
guns too far away from one another, in order to have them all
fed at the same pressure. If this is not possible, then use the
parallel set-up (C). If your installation involves several spray
guns, which operate at different outputs, then it is advisable to
4
fit fluid pressure regulators (2), which allow individual pressure
setting for each spray gun.
To get the fluid to arrive at the spray gun under pressure, we
use pressure pots or pumps (1).
This decision depends on the actual fluid to be sprayed and the
anticipated fluid consumption.
If necessary, paint filters (3) can be fitted between the pump
and the spray guns.
To fit the spray guns themselves, standard fixings can be used.
Lastly, you should consider using hoses of a certain length (4)
and a defined number of shut-off valves.
Determining the right fan width
The parameters that are necessary in determining the best fan width, in order to deliver a
constant coating thickness on the parts, are the following:
• max. stroke of the linear robot (reciprocator): constant
• reciprocator speed: constant
• number of paint layers to spray: constant
• conveyor speed: variable
• max. width of the work zone - always inferior to the max. stroke of the reciprocator: variable
widt of working zone
Fig.1
Width of machine CM
Watching the movements of the spray guns and the motion of the items to be coated, you get a picture of the
composition of their respective speed. If a time trace is put on the machine, a ball-point pen for instance, you
obtain an alternating diagonal trace (fig. 1), moving in the direction of the machine movement. .
Speed of the track
VP
Now let us replace this pen with a spray gun with a narrow fan (J1 in fig. 2), you will note that the traces of sprayed paint cover
one another every time the spray gun changes directions; this leads to covering three distinctly different areas :
J1
J2
Fig.2
1 paint layer
No paint layer
2 paint layers
Now let us progressively widen the fan of the spray gun up to the value J2 (= the linear travel of the conveyor during one cycle
of the spray gun - fig. 3), you will find that the zones of coating are now all the same with two coats of paint each.
J2
Fig.3
This width J 2 for two even coats of paint corresponds exactly to the following formula:
J2
= VP
x2
(m)
(m/s)
CM
VM
Where:
VP = conveyor speed (m/s)
CM = total reciprocator travel (m)
VM = reciprocator speed (m/s)
2 = the required number of layers (use 4 to double the number of
layers).
Note:
The amount of layers can only be an even number. The following chart will allow you to quickly determine
he fan width to be used on the machine.
The speed of the machine will be chosen according to the type of spray system which will have been
determined during the first investigation into the installation.

The Benefits Of AIRMIX
®
®
Airmix has become a standard in the industry by providing better atomization, low paint
particle velocities, low air consumption and extremely high transfer efficiencies.
®
Airmix - Superior to conventional, low pressure, and airless spraying.
Paint Velocity - Reduces booth maintenance
The paint velocity has a direct impact on performance: the higher the
velocity, the greater the amount of overspray and bounceback, which
combine to quickly pollute the booth. As can be seen from the graph on
the right, the particle speed with Airmix is much lower than with all other
systems.

Transfer Efficiency - Saves on paint costs
Users of Airmix achieve the highest transfer efficiency available.
Efficiencies on different types of manual spray equipment are:
®
Low
Conventional
Airless
HVLP
Air-Assisted Airless
AIRMIX®
Electrostatic AIRMIX®
Air Consumption - Lower energy costs
Airmix uses less air for atomization air than any other high quality
spray system. Airmix works well with smaller air compressors,
lower production air pressure and lower compressed air volumes.
This generates major savings in compressed air cost and reduces air
compressor maintenance.

Fine Atomization - Excellent finish
Airmix uses a specially designed aircap to provide a smooth and
even finish every time. The aircap helps to evenly atomize the paint
as it leaves the fluid tip. This even atomization allows the paint to be
broken down into smaller particles which provides the best coat with
minimal defects or orange peel.

(1) NOTE: For HVLP compliance, the maximum inlet air pressure at the gun base must not exceed 14.35
psi (0.99 bar) to maintain 10 psi or less at the air cap. Testing for HVLP compliance was performed using the
specified HVLP test air cap, the fan control fully closed and a pressure gauge on the air inlet fitting at the gun
base or handle. It may also be a requirement of some regulatory agencies that uses have the appropriate
test air cap available on site to verify that the gun is being operated within the regulatory limitations.

Automatic AIRLESS® spray guns
Airless® ASI 24, 40 and 40 gt
Spray Guns
AIRLESS spraying, under high pressure without any atomizing air delivered
to the gun, allows the spraying of high viscosity product, a precise fan width
determined by the angle of the tip chosen, the spraying of thick coats of paint
and allows for slow gun travel speed (0.4 m/s - 80 fpm maximum).
High output
Features
Benefits
Equipped with 2 fluid inlets
Allows for circulation and saves money by
eliminating the need for a 2-way valve on color or
flushing
Saves time and money by making it easier to clean,
faster color changes and less maintenance

EXEL Advanced
Technology
systems with a guarantee
Why do most finishing systems only come with a 1
year manufacturers warranty on the product not
the process? Its because most systems
integrators or distributors do not control the
entire process.
What makes EXEL ADVANCED
TECHNOLOGY Group different?
It is because we believe in our process and products.
