Fosterers are very special people. Their time, commitment and loving care help a scared dog or cat turn into a loving pet; or a sick one turn into a happy healthy companion. The reward is seeing them go up stairs for the first time, or play with toys they never had, or wag their tails with joy. Letting them go to become a member of another family is bittersweet but it turns to joy when photos arrive of them snuggling with their new people and four-legged buddies. Fostering is a way of life for Pet Rescue. It is how we save so many lives. Not having a shelter, we have always taken as many dogs and cats into our homes as we could manage. There is no way that a communal shelter can give so many animals the tender care and attention that they get in homes. Nor can they get to know each individual personality so that the pet can be matched up with the right home. More homes become available as more people join and then bring in friends and relatives. So now Pet Rescue has a whole lot of fosterers that must be initiated into our system and a lot of foster homes to keep track of. Lee Ann Simonson is doing a superb job of coordinating the dog foster homes and Judy Schwartzman does the same for the cat fosterers. Pet Rescue has been able to grow and save the lives of so many cats and dogs because of our fosterers. We've undergone change after change over 29 years, but one change is now part of our practice and is here to stay. We've come from thinking of our homes as temporary refuges (when we had no alternative) to choosing foster homing as far and away the best way to take care of our cats and dogs. Thank you all - fosterers and all the others who keep Pet Rescue going. Sue Kamell President ABOUT PET RESCUE We started 29 years ago when three women left the Central Westchester Humane Society shelter in Elmsford determined to do a better job of taking care of abandoned animals and we've done that consistently. In the last fifteen years, as more people have joined as volunteers, we've been able to help more and more. In 2010, we found homes for over 750 dogs and cats, spayed or neutered over 400 feral cats, found safe places for many, and treated over 1,100 animals altogether in our clinic. As neutering of dogs has caught on in the northeast, meaning fewer strays and abandoned pets in our area, we've been taking dogs (and a few cats) from truly terrible facilities in the rural South. Surprisingly, our work has been paying off even for some dogs left behind. Perhaps seeing our model of caring, or with hope that they didn't have before, the workers in at least one pound are at last taking an interest in the welfare of their dogs. They're gentler with them and cleaning up the pound. Last year, we began to take in, treat at our clinic, and find homes for adoptable dogs unfortunate enough to go to an underfunded and understaffed animal facility nearby. The New Rochelle Humane Society has been pitching in too. With more need for our clinic services, we're feeling the need for a larger space for the clinic and other functions. A new supporter is actively searching for an appropriate building. As always, Pet Rescue depends on you. Pet Rescue is you - your homes, your work, your financial and moral support. Pet Rescue is a 501(c) nonprofit organization staffed entirely by a dedicated group of unpaid volunteers. Officers include President, Susette Kamell; Vice President, Ruth Frumkin; and Secretary, Jean Lienau. Although there are too many other volunteers to name them all here, we thank them for all the invaluable things they do. CONTRIBUTORS Sponsors New York Giants Margaret Reilly-Antalec & Joseph C.
