Melissa Chong receives DWASF award for Women in Sports
The Delaware Women’s Alliance for Sport and
Fitness hosted its 27th annual Women in Sports
Day on April 24 at the Modern Maturity Center
in Dover. Awards were presented to five adult
female athletes and approximately 37 high school
female athletes from the entire state of Delaware.
Five women were also honored in several sports
categories, including SODE athlete, Melissa
Chong, who won the Special Olympics Game
Changer Award. Congratulations, Melissa!
Melissa Chong with her parents,
Kevin and Susan Chong, at the
DWASF Awards
The following was written by Melissa’s parents,
who also attended the awards presentation.
“Melissa is 27 years old and a 2009 graduate of the Delaware Autism Program. The program taught Melissa many lifelong skills
that have given her the opportunity to live as full a life as she possibly can.
Since her graduation and with support from Autism Delaware’s POW&R employment program, she has worked as an office
assistant at a chiropractor’s office and as a baking assistant at Waggies by Maggie & Friends.
She has been an active participant in Special Olympics since she was 8 years old. Melissa competes in figure skating,
snowshoeing, basketball, swimming, tennis, cycling, soccer and bowling. In the past, she has also competed in and won medals
in t-ball, horseback riding, Alpine skiing, golf and roller skating. Suffice to say, her participation in sports is only limited by her
parents’ ability to provide transportation to the training venues!
Melissa’s favorite sport is figure skating. Due to significant communication deficits, Melissa relies almost entirely on observation
to learn the intricate figure skating skills such as backward pivots, waltz eight and forward inside slide chasse. Melissa is Delaware
Special Olympics’ sole figure skating competitor. She competed at the Keystone Regional PA Figure Skating competition in
2014 and won 2 gold medals (1 single and 1 pairs with a Unified Partner). She has participated in the University of Delaware’s
Synchronized Figure Skating Eastern’s Sendoffs with a Unified Partner as well as with her fellow Special Olympians at The Skating
Club of Wilmington winter ice shows.
Melissa’s other favorite sport is swimming. If she could, she would swim every day! Melissa also enjoys art and dancing and is
a cast member of the Delaware Theatre Company’s Totally Awesome Players troupe.
Melissa is a hero in her parents’ eyes. She perseveres in spite of the tremendous challenges she faces, mostly by herself and in
silence. Melissa embodies the Special Olympics athlete’s oath: “Let me win. But if I cannot win, let me be brave in the attempt.”
Melissa loves Special Olympics Delaware for the fun, the competition and her circle of friends in the organization.
In her parents’ eyes, she has already won. Not just the medals, accolades or cheers but the unceasing daily battle of coping
and living her life the best way she can.”

COME VISIT HEALTHY ATHLETES AT SUMMER GAMES!
Free Health Screenings for Opening Eyes, Healthy Hearing, Fit Feet and Special Smiles
on Saturday, June 11 from 10am-2pm
Healthy Athletes is a Special Olympics program that provides free health screenings in a fun, welcoming
environment that removes the anxiety and trepidation people with intellectual disabilities often experience
when faced with a visit to a doctor or dentist.
Our impact on the health and well-being of Special Olympics athletes around the world is great, in some
cases saving lives by discovering unknown health issues or providing health care that otherwise would not be
available. We not only serve these athletes but also train health care professionals who then go back to their
practices with increased knowledge of and compassion for people with intellectual disabilities.
Fit Feet, Healthy Hearing, Opening Eyes and Special Smiles will once again be offered to athletes and Unified
partners on Saturday of Summer Games from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Come before, between, or after events, during lunch,
or whenever you can spare the time to check it out. You won’t regret it!
It is our hope that every effort will be made to visit all four components so the athletes can take full advantage of
all there is to offer, including form-fitted insoles and prescription eyewear. And it’s all free of charge!
If you think there is no need to attend because your son/daughter has a regular doctor, etc., please consider that for many
of the health care professionals who volunteer for Healthy Athletes, this is an opportunity for them to get the experience of
having someone with an intellectual disability as a patient. And a positive experience might encourage them to open their
doors to more people with disabilities.
Healthy Athletes is offered worldwide, with Delaware being one of only a handful of states where every single registered
athlete statewide has easy access to it every year through their participation in Summer Games.
Visit the Healthy Athletes pavilion at Olympic Village at this year’s Summer Games!

Danielle Martin receives
Torch Run’s highest honor
Detective Danielle Martin of the Delaware State Police has logged a lot of
miles and put in many hours for Special Olympics Delaware.
Her involvement with the Special Olympics Torch Run began more than
a decade ago when she was asked in 2005 by a colleague to help go door
to door to local businesses soliciting ads for the organization’s annual
yearbook.
That same year Martin ran several miles in her first Torch Run as one of
hundreds of police officers who participate each year in the 160-mile trek
from Rehoboth Beach to Newark.
The following year she drove to Dulles, Virginia, and attended her first
Law Enforcement for Special Olympics (LESO) Regional Conference. It
was at that conference where she learned how she could become even more
entrenched in the movement and when she returned to the First State,
immediately began participating at sports events as part of the opening
ceremonies and medal presentations.
Left to right: Detective Danielle Martin, 2016 Winnie Spence
Torch Runner of the Year,
Christopher Truono, SODE Outstanding Athlete,
and Wilmington Police Chief Bobby Cummings ,
Vice Chair of Delaware Law Enforcement for Special Olympics
“I quickly became engaged in the enthusiasm of the athletes when they
receive their well-deserved medals,” Martin said of her initial experience.
From that point forward, her involvement increased and her journey
continued, including her role as a member of the Final Leg at the 2014 USA
Games in Princeton, New Jersey.
“That was such an honor,” Martin recalled of running alongside the athletes
while carrying the Flame of Hope through New Jersey. “I was able to interact
with the athletes on a daily basis and hear the stories of their challenges and
triumphs. I got to know them and see firsthand how important and lifechanging Special Olympics has been for them. It was just an unforgettable
experience. It was an experience that reinforced my commitment to Special
Olympics and the Law Enforcement Torch Run.”
And now Special Olympics Delaware has formally recognized that
commitment. Martin has been named the recipient of Delaware LESO’s
highest honor, the 2016 Winnie Spence Torch Runner of the Year.
“Danielle is the quintessential Torch Run volunteer and unsung hero,”
Delaware LESO state director John Miller said. “She is very quiet,
hardworking and determined. She knows how to get things done.”
“Being recognized as the Winnie Spence Torch Runner of the Year is such
an incredible honor,” Martin said. “I feel as though I was chosen to join an
elite group of those who have shared the same honor.”
Martin was presented with the award on April 12 at the Delaware Police
Chiefs Council meeting at Dover Police Department.
