CHERBOURG - Azamara Club Cruises
CHERBOURG
FRANCE
Step back in time on the D-Day beaches of Cherbourg.
Experience the historical atmosphere of Cherbourg. This well-known
town on the Cotentin peninsula in Lower Normandy is forever ingrained
in the global memory as the site of major World War II occurrences.
Occupied by Germans and liberated by Allied forces after the Norman
Invasion on its beaches, today the town of Cherbourg honors its past
while allowing its unique culture to flourish as it ever was.
Rich food, a sincere appreciation of the sea and beautiful expanses of
countryside infuse life here with characteristic French romance. Enter a
world of deep history and magnificent presence.
LOCAL CUISINE
SHOPPING
Cherbourg’s cuisine is wonderfully
French. Cream, butter, cider, oysters
and tantalizingly potent cheeses are
staples here.
Indulge in plates of oysters, best from
the nearby Bay of Mont St. Michel,
and chunks of Camembert, Pont l’Évêque and Livarot
cheese. Dip crackers into pâté en terrine, made from a
variety of ground meats and spices.
For a full meal, try veal dishes, poule au pot, a boiled
chicken with vegetables, or chicken braised with
calvados, the local apple brandy.
There are no vineyards here. Cider and calvados, both
from local apples, reign instead.
CURRENCY
France uses
the euro.
Some major
banks exchange
money at ATMs.
Cherbourg is known
for its umbrellas. A
musical film about
a woman who fell
in love while selling
umbrellas catapulted
the local umbrella
industry into the
international spotlight years ago. Today,
Cherbourg is still the place for exceptionally
high-quality umbrellas.
For a bit of mingling, shop the local
markets at place de Gaulle or hit the main
shopping areas behind the waterfront in
the pedestrian friendly Old Town. Pick up
at least one bottle of calvados for home, too.
All restaurants
include a 15% service
charge, but leave a
small tip.
Always tip waiters
in cash.
