At a time when healthcare systems are facing serious challenges, we at the Saint John Regional Hospital Foundation have so much to celebrate. From life-saving emergency operations, to compassionate long-term care, to cutting-edge research- every single day, the actions of our physicians and staff remind us why they are among the best in the world. And it's all to help make the lives of their fellow New Brunswickers better. This wouldn't be possible without the generosity of our donors. Donations to the Saint John Regional Hospital Foundation stay in our community and support cancer research and treatment, pediatrics, the New Brunswick Heart Centre, education scholarships, funding for mental health programming and much more. Thanks to your support, the Saint John Regional Hospital Foundation is able to fulfill its mandate of fund raising for excellence and innovation in your healthcare beyond the scope of government funding. When you give to the Saint John Regional Hospital Foundation, you give back to your community. Every dollar we receive goes directly to caring for your family, friends and neighbours. In the following pages, you will learn about some of our accomplishments over the past year, through real-life stories of patients and donors. We hope the stories of these brave New Brunswickers inspire you to continue supporting your Foundation. Thank you for your ongoing support. As New Brunswickers, we are proud of the quality of life we enjoy- and there is no quality of life without quality of health. Since 1980, the Foundation has raised more than $75 million, thanks to the generosity of more than 50,000 donors. $98,000 in Intensive Care Unit equipment $83,000 in neurosurgery equipment $69,000 in palliative care $50,000 toward the NB Heart Centre and cardiac health and wellness Board of Directors Patrick Oland, Chair 34 years $75 million 50,000 donors Between April 2013 and March 2014, we allocated more than $1.3 million to dozens of programs, funds and equipment purchases to improve the quality of healthcare in Saint John, for the benefit of all New Brunswickers. Some of our investment highlights from the last year include: Heather Royal Edward Mclean, Treasurer Steve Titus Terri Riedle, Secretary Kelly VanBuskirk Dr. Donald Craig Jean-Marc Poirier, representing MindCare New Brunswick Dr. Vernon Paddock Jamie Gallagher Laureen Jarrett Peter Logan Dr. Gerry Maloney $323,000 in hospital and laboratory equipment $232,000 in scholarships to nearly 30 medical students John Rocca Jason Downey, Vice Chair Robert (Bob) Manning Paul Sexton, representing MindCare New Brunswick John McGarry, representing the Horizon Health Network Natasha Doucet, representing the Saint John Regional Hospital Auxiliary 4 Saint John Regional Hospital Foundation The Give In 2010, we launched our annual The Give campaigna province-wide fund raising effort with the aim of achieving excellence and innovation in healthcare each year. In 2013, we successfully reached our goal of raising $850,000 toward the purchase of leading-edge neurosurgical equiment. What we've been able to Give so far: 2010 2011 2012 2013 WmmPJ!!IImlU~mml!l!mm Hospital Home Lottery Our 2013 Hospital Home Lottery was our most successful to date. In 2014, we are aiming to raise $900,000 for the purchase of 13 pieces of state-of-the-art laboratory equipment. This equipment will give our lab team the ability to analyze our DNA, right here in our hospital, meaning reduced wait times for test results, fewer side effects from treatments and better outcomes for patients. "It took several weeks to get my results back from the outside laboratory," said Gwenn Bartlett, a personalized targeted cancer patient at the Saint John Regional Hospital. "Time is of the essence when you're fighting cancer- every day counts. Having the ability to analyze tumors at the DNA level here at the hospital will mean less time waiting for answers, saving New Brunswick cancer patients precious time -and boosting their chances of winning the fight." The lottery sold out before we reached the Early-Bird deadline, generating nearly $800,000 in revenue to benefit our Foundation's priority programs, including MindCare New Brunswick and the New Brunswick Heart Centre. The money raised through our Hospital Home Lottery goes to undesignated funds, which means we can redirect proceeds toward the area of highest and most urgent need within the hospital. Our lotteries are win-win-win. All prizes are purchased here in New Brunswick, won in New Brunswick and the net proceeds stay in New Brunswick to support excellence and innovation for our healthcare. Since its inception, our Hospital Home Lottery has raised more than $2.5 million for healthcare in New Brunswick. We'd also like to thank all of those who participate in our hospital employee lottery each year. In 2013, our employee lottery raised nearly $90,000. Lottery proceeds support the Employee Crisis Fund and Saint John Regional Hospital Foundation special projects. 2013 I 2014 Annual Report 5 Healthy minds, healthy lives ''My husband died here and all eight of my grand kids were born here. This hospital is very special to me. A friend of mine once said, 'Grief can make you bitter or better' - and I chose better. '' - Sheila Levesque Next time you walk through our hospital's main lobby, look left to the table where our Foundation volunteers are busy selling wooden roses. Chances are one of those volunteers is Sheila Levesqueor as her friends and family know her, Nanny. Nanny began volunteering in 2004 after her husband lost a four-year battle with cancer. A decade later, she now averages about five days of volunteer time each week. Nanny has helped run a variety of our programs- but she says if she had to choose the one nearest to her heart, it would be MindCare. A mother of five and a grand mother of eight, she says MindCare's connection to mental health issues among youth hits home. "A lot of young people just need someone to talk tosomeone who's not connected to them and who won't enable them," she said. "The organizations we help do just that, and one of the key ways they get funding to do their jobs is through MindCare." Nanny says before getting involved with the Foundation, she didn't realize just how much it did to support local healthcare. For her, it's all about giving back to those who tried to help her husband. "My husband died here and all eight of my grand kids were born here. This hospital is very special to me," she said. "A friend of mine once said, 'Grief can make you bitter or better' - and I chose better." Over the past couple of years, she's been involved in lots of direct fund raising efforts- her motto is, "One cookie at a time, one rose at a time, one ticket at a time." When she was asked to start selling the wooden roses in the hospital lobby, she wasn't sure it would take off. But as it turns out, she's a natural at sales. Since 2012, sales have reached $70,000, including $40,000 in 2013. "Everyone has something to give back. It gives that day a purpose," she said. "And if we make the lives of our patients and doctors easier, that's what it's all about." But these were relatively minor injuries compared to what the ICU found when they did extensive testing to find out what had caused him to black out and fall in the first place. They were even able to inspect his surgical incisions via webcam and check for signs of infection. As dad's sole caregiver, these daily video calls were very comforting- they allowed me to ask questions and confirm that everything was moving along as it was supposed to. They discovered that dad had three nearly completely obstructed arteries, and that he needed emergency triple bypass surgery. He was transferred from the ICU to the Cardiac Care Unit, where he spent about a week getting ready for the procedure. We'd like to say a big thank you to everyone at the Saint John Regional Hospital. ' ' The experience in the Cardiac Care unit was incredible. I can only describe it as a community of care- from the doctors and staff, to the support we received from other patients. Just four days after his surgery, dad was released from the hospital. He came home with a machine from the Telehealth program, which allowed me to take his vitals each morning and upload them for a nurse at the Cardiac Care Unit, who could then review them and talk to us via video conference and track his progress. -Mike Bacon, son of NB Heart Centre patient. That's why we established the New Brunswick Medical Education Trust- to provide young New Brunswickers with medical school scholarships. While scholarship recipients may study at the university of their choice, after graduation, they must return and practice here in New Brunswick. It sends an important message to future physicians that the people of New Brunswick want them to practice within the province, and are willing to help make that happen. Now that I've graduated from Dalhousie University and am about to start my family medicine residency in Fredericton, I am grateful to those who have helped make my dream a reality. That's why our Extra Mural Program (EMP) works to prevent hospitalization and, when hospitalized, helps get patients discharged and safely home. "There isn't anybody who hasn't been touched by cancer. All the money we raise he Ips provide cancer treatment for people here in New Brunswick." - Bette Ann Chatterton The EMP provides a range of healthcare services, including rehabilitative services, education and support for chronic disease management and palliative services for both patients and caregivers. While many of our Foundation's volunteers support our existing programs, others find their very own way to give back. For our standard service delivery of care, we are funded by Horizon Health Network. But for services that go beyond the basics, we have the Saint John Regional Hospital Foundation. The demands on our services grow each year. Saint John is the biggest EMP unit in the province, with more than 100,000 cases from more than 7,000 patients in 2013. As we respond to the ever-increasing demand for service, without additional funding, we look more and more to our Foundation for help. Our Saint John team consists of nurses, social workers, dietitians, occupational therapists, physiotherapists, respiratory technologists, speech language pathologists and administrative staff. We all travel throughout the greater Saint John area and are on call24/7. To learn more about the Extra Mural Program, visit foundationhealthcarepartnership.cajextramural foundation/home. EXTRA MURAL PROGRAM FOUNDATION FO DAnON S SERVICES UTRA-MU OS In 2000, a group of four St. Martins residents started the Fundy Trail Cancer Walk. What began as a small community event has grown into a staple in the Foundation's annual event calendar, and has raised more than $140,000 for cancer treatment at the Saint John Regional Hospital. "The walk is nature at its best," said Bette Ann Chatterton, one of the walk's organizers and Mayor of St. Martins. "For people fighting or dealing with cancer, it can be exactly what you need- some time in nature to be quiet and at peace." For Bette Ann and her husband John, the connection to cancer is personal. Bette Ann's father had cancer, as did both of John's parents. Bette Ann says she's been impressed by the generosity of community members who have helped out with the event, year after year. "All you have to do is ask and people are there," she said. "The Foundation does exactly what the people of New Brunswick do- they step up and help where there is a need. And there is a need for the funds they raise." The Foundation plays a key role in ensuring that the Saint John Regional Hospital is able to provide quality, compassionate care to patients and their families. The ongoing commitment of hospital foundations and their donors allows Horizon Health Network, its staff, physicians and volunteers to focus on putting the needs of patients first. Over the years, the Saint John Regional Hospital Foundation has helped Horizon enhance the quality of care it provides through campaign successes such as those that supported the neonatal unit, the pediatric intensive care unit, the NB Heart Centre and many others. Since its inception in 1980, the Saint John Regional Hospital Foundation has contributed, through the generosity of its more than 50,000 donors, more than $75 million to the hospital. RESEAU DE SANTE Hori zon HEALTH NETWORK This past year, the success of 'The Give' campaign meant that more than $850,000 worth of new neurosurgical equipment could be purchased. Horizon Health Network is pleased to work with the Foundation and extends its thanks to the continued dedication, of its staff and donors, to improving health care and patient comfort at the Saint John Regional Hospital. Excellence in health care happens when people work together for a common goal. We look forward to working with the Foundation in the years to come. !5} President & CEO For our children & grandchildren To all the donors listed below who have decided to give to our Foundation in the form of endowments, thank you. For Heather and Don Royal, it will last even longer. They have decided to set up a medical endowment with the Saint John Regional Hospital Foundation, designed to keep giving to the Foundation long after their lives are over. Typically, these endowments take the form of estate gifts or Will allocations. "We thought it would be nice to have things prepared and to have some control," Heather said. "We'll feel as though we've accomplished something and we've left this world giving something back that will continue." Heather became involved with the hospital more than 20 years ago and has been on the Foundation board of directors for 12 years. Dan's involvement is tied to his experience as a patient: within a six-week period in 1998, he was diagnosed with stage two colon cancer and had major heart surgery at the Saint John Regional Hospital. "Looking back, my treatments were done so well that I developed a major sense of pride in our hospital," Don said. "This really is a world-class facility, and we want to be a part of keeping it up and improving it where we can." For Heather and Don, part of their desire to give back comes from knowing their contributions will stay in their commu "There is such significant overhead with lots of charities days," Heather said. "When you give to your own hospital foundation, you're helping your friends and family, within your own community, rather than see your dollars turn into overhead costs. The people that run the Foundation are local residents too, so there's no concern that your money will end up elsewhere." Heather says anyone could consider leaving a legacy gift to the Foundation: "When thinking about giving back, just ask yourself: Have I been a patient? Do I know someone who has been a patient?" "The likelihood of someone in Saint John going their entire life with no exposure to our hospital system is very slim, so why not help make it better?" Don added. "And you don't have to have zillions, or even hundreds of thousands of dollars to do it. Every little bit counts and everyone will be recognized."
