In a high school of just
around 280 students, the
Springport Future Farmers
of America (FFA) Chapter
boasts an impressive 160
members. Those members
worked throughout the past
year to connect projects with
the community. Their efforts
have yielded recognition as
the top chapter in the state.
Sophomore Caitlin Henne and
Junior Carly Claucherty represented the team at the state
competition and worked for
weeks to get their presentation
up to snuff.
“That’s a big honor for
one, to win state in the individual contests but we’re the best
chapter in the State of Michigan and that’s a big deal,” said
Henne with obvious pride.
The duo had just ten minutes to detail nine projects the
chapter completed during the
year and then they moved on
to the one-on-one interviews.
Hours upon hours were spent
writing, editing and memorizing the presentation. The girls
practiced their material for
just about anyone who would
listen including presenting in
front of an algebra class.
“There were endless hours
of writing and memorizing
and even then there were still
days we would work from 3
o’clock until 8 o’clock after
school,” said Henne.
Claucherty is the president
of the Springport chapter and
explained that the projects included in the application needed to support the community
and the students at the same
time. The Springport chapter,
chartered in 1940, has a long
history of excellence in the
FFA taking home state champ
titles in 2002, 2004, 2008,
2009, 2010, and now 2015.
Just ten teams were selected for the state competition based on their 18-page
application. From there, three
teams were chosen to present
to a panel.
With the state title under
their belt, the team is focused
on an upcoming trip to Costa
Rica. While abroad, they will
learn about agribusiness from

Teachers Question Contract Negotiation Progress at Meeting
Amy Jo Kinyon
Editor
Superintendent Bill DeFrance outlined possible projects, which could be completed if the sinking fund millage
passes in May. Roof repairs,
replacement of boilers, repairs
to stadium concrete and other items made the list. Board
Trustee Jeff Allison expressed
concerns about putting forth a
year-by-year plan.
“There’s a huge difference
in what you can use a bond for
and what you can use a sinking fund for,” said Allison. “It
looks like a bond proposal and
I think we’re going to backslide if we present it like this.”
Allison explained while
the items listed under the draft
plan were needed, they might
not be able to be addressed if
other repairs or maintenance
are required during the time
span of the sinking fund.
According to the Michigan Legislature Revised
School Code Act 451 of 1976,
sinking fund money is only
“to be used for the purchase
of real estate for sites for, and
the construction or repair of,
school buildings.”
In contrast, a bond can be
used to purchase new equipment for inside and outside the
classroom.
“We wanted to show you
we had enough guts to put a
plan out there,” answered Superintendent Bill DeFrance.
“It as least shows people that
we have a vision of how we
want to spend the money.”
The district previously
asked the voters in November
for a one-mill, 10-year sinking
fund millage. This question
on the May 3 ballot will be
for a revised one-mill, fiveyear request, which will mean
around $495,000 a year for the
district. The November issue
failed by just three votes.
In the public comments
portion of the regular school
board meeting, band teacher
Adam Gumbrecht spoke about
the ongoing contract negotiations between the board and
teachers union.
“It is only recently, with
only a few months left in the
contract, that any real discussion has occurred,” remarked
Gumbrecht. “I urge you to go
to the meetings and be part of
the process. Whatever they are
doing now is not working and
needs to change. Perhaps your
presence can be that change.”
Ed Jewett, teacher at
Lockwood Elementary spoke
of the struggle his family experiences due to finances.
“When you guys go home
tonight . . . please think about
those teachers who are still
on the clock,” Jewett told the
board. “My wife (also a teacher) wanted to come tonight but
she’s at her second job. We
have five jobs between us.”
The board entered into
closed session at the end of the
meeting to discuss those contract negotiations.

ERMC Radiology Earns
ACR Accreditation
Eaton Rapids Medical
Center (ERMC) has been
awarded a three-year term of
accreditation in computed tomography (CT) as the result of
a recent review by the American College of Radiology
(ACR). CT scanning — sometimes called CAT scanning —
is a noninvasive medical test
that helps physicians diagnose
and treat various medical conditions.
The ACR gold seal of
accreditation represents the
highest level of image quality
and patient safety. It is award-
ed only to facilities meeting
ACR Practice Parameters
and Technical Standards after a peer-review evaluation
by board-certified physicians
and medical physicists who
are experts in the field. Image quality, personnel qualifications, adequacy of facility
equipment, quality control
procedures and quality assurance programs are assessed.
The findings are reported to
the ACR Committee on Accreditation, which subsequently provides the practice with a
comprehensive report that can
be used for continuous practice improvement.
CT is one of many diagnostic tools available in Eaton
Rapids. Radiology technologists at ERMC perform many
imaging tests, including widebore MRI, ultrasound, digital
mammography, fluoroscopy
and general radiography. For
additional information, call
517.663.9426 or visit www.

Eaton Rapids Native Chosen to Honor
Former First-Lady Nancy Reagan
Photo Provided
Eaton Rapids native Weston Strathmann Specialist. Honor Guard Company. 4 Battalion 3rd Infantry Regime (third from left) was part of the honor guard at the recent
funeral of former first-lady Nancy Reagan.
In a day full of tradition and precision, Eaton Rapids native Weston Strathmann found
himself center stage. He was chosen to be part of the Honor Guard Funeral team at the
recent funeral of former first-lady Nancy Raegan. The 21 year-old is part of the Third
U.S. Infantry known as The Old Guard. This is the oldest active-duty infantry unit in the
Army, serving the nation since 1784. The Old Guard is the Army's official ceremonial
unit and escort to the president, and it also provides security for Washington, D.C., in
time of national emergency or civil disturbance. A member of the Army Honor Guard for
the past three years, he has completed missions at the Oval Office and White House and
is currently stationed in Fort Meyer in Arlington, Virginia.
Weston’s mother Lisa Strathmann recognizes the significance of his service and said
the community has rallied around her son’s service.
“We are quite proud of him and the community has really shown their pride and support of our local hometown soldier as well,” said Lisa.

THE UNFORTUNATE
SIGNS OF SPRING
Robins are back, sap has
been boiled into syrup, and
trees are budding – all great
signs of spring. One unfortunate sign of spring is the
discarded dangerous chemicals, cooking equipment and

The chemicals and components used to cook methamphetamine are extremely
toxic and hazardous. Accidental exposure to discarded
methamphetamine chemicals
and equipment can cause serious health injuries including burns, collapsed lungs

On Monday, March 14,
the Eaton County Sheriff’s
Office Delta Patrol responded to a call at Grand Woods
Park in Delta Township. The
call was that a dog had become trapped in a foxhole. The owner could hear the dog
crying from inside the hole. The dog was a 7-year-old
female Jack Russell Terrier
named “Frances.” Deputies
arrived and summoned help
from the Delta Township
Fire Department. Deputies,
fire personnel and neighbors
began hand digging to find
the dog that was trapped
numerous feet into the hole. Deputies summoned Michigan Plumbing who brought
a pipe camera to the scene. The camera showed the
dog trapped in the hole and
could not turn around. As
they continued to dig, the
hole began to collapse and
the dog’s cries went silent. The owner was preparing
for the worst. At this time,

FAAST March Challenge on March 12. The ‘Hounds began the day with a 48-25 win over
Olivet. In the second pool play game, ER came out on top of Jackson Northwest by the
score of 44-22. The semifinals was another match-up with the JNW Mounties and another
win, 52-33, for the Greyhounds. The Championship game opponent was New Buffalo. ER
led 29-12 at halftime and cruised to a 42-27 win to take home the trophy. Despite shooting
just 35 for 67 from the free throw line, the ER ‘Hounds outscored their opponents by a
total of 186-107 in the four games. The team is now 25-2 overall and on a 20-game win
streak as they prepare for one more tournament before taking time off in the spring.

If you want to be a good
turkey hunter you need to
learn good woodsmanship
just as much, if not more,
than you need to be a good
caller. Good woodsmanship will help you entice a
gobbler into an area where
he is more likely to go.
Being a good woodsman means learning to
identify turkey hotspots
like where they roost, water, feed, and their different strutting areas.
Finding the roost is
your first step to success.
Finding where they water
and feed will certainly
come in handy too. but
always remember, a gobbler usually doesn’t move
far from his strut zones.
When a tom approaches,
then suddenly turns, he
has probably heard another hen closer to his strut
zone.
Find the strut zones
and you will up your odds
on taking a gobbler this
spring.

Supe’s View
On behalf of the Eaton
Rapids Public School District,
I am writing to inform you that
the School Board members
voted to place a sinking fund
millage proposal on the ballot
in the upcoming May 3 election. It is crucial that I explain
to you why the millage, if approved by the voters, would
benefit this community
What is the sinking fund
millage? A sinking fund millage is a limited property tax
that is specifically designed
for addressing building and
renovation projects. Essentially, it is an additional avenue
that allows schools to pay for
necessary repairs and updates
that are often expensive or unexpected. The ballot proposal
is for one mill for five years.
One mill would generate
$495,800 a year for the school
district. For a family with a
home worth $100,000 with an
assessed value of $50,000, the
cost would be $50 per year.
Opinion
Column
Bill
DeFrance
What would this millage accomplish? The money
from the millage would pay for
things such as roofs, boilers,
lighting, sidewalks, plumbing,
grounds keeping, bus repairs,
security, and athletic facilities. The State of Michigan
has strict guidelines on what
the millage can be used for.
The funds are not allowed to
be used to pay staff salaries,
new buses, technology or
textbooks; pending legislation
could add technology to viable
uses. The millage would provide funds to keep the Eaton
Rapids Public School’s campuses fully functional and op-
erational. It would also reduce
electrical, heating and transportation costs throughout the
district. Without this millage,
many necessary updates and
repairs will begin to compete
with current educational programming dollars as we continue to battle budget issues.
Why do you need to
vote? If approved, this millage would keep the Eaton
Rapids Public School District
operating at its best. These improvements not only support
our schools, but also our community, which means we need
your vote. We, as a school district, are asking the community to get involved and vote on
this issue May 3, 2016. Registration material and absentee
ballots will be available at all
school buildings in the office.
How will this money be
managed? The School District will have Board members, community members,
and school administrators on
a committee that will man-
age the money and the school
projects. All projects will be
approved by the full Board of
Education.
What will the money
be used for? We have developed a draft five-year plan that
shows voters what we will do:
1st year - Hydronic boilers
at the High School and Stadium concrete
2nd year - GIS Roof,
Track Repair, and Greyhound
Drive Lighting
3rd year - Hydronic boilers
4th year - High School and
Middle School Roof Repairs,
High School Gym Bleacher
Motors and Rollers
5th year - Roof Repairs,
High School gym floor resurface
Every year has $50,000 allocated to deal with emergencies and contingencies. Thank
you for making Eaton Rapids
Public School District the best
it can be. I look forward to finally getting this passed.
Health Department Gives Diabetes Alert Day Details
Diabetes is a serious disease. Nearly 30 million children and adults in the United
States live with it. More than a
quarter of them—8 million—
do not even know they have it
and are not getting the medical
care they need. It is estimated
that another 86 million people
have pre-diabetes, which puts
them at high risk for developing Type 2 diabetes. People
with pre-diabetes have blood
glucose (sugar) higher than
normal, but not high enough
to be diagnosed with Type 2
diabetes.
By understanding the
risk, you can take the necessary steps to help prevent or
delay Type 2 diabetes. March
22 is American Diabetes Association Alert Day. On this
day, residents are encouraged
to take a simple (and anonymous) one-minute test to

Anna Curtis
Library Director
I have spent the last year
as the Director of the Eaton Rapids Public Library
changing the physical library
building, but also the perception of what a library really
is. When I interviewed for
the position I made it known
that I did not see the library
as simply a place to only go
for books and a quiet atmosphere. In fact what I told
B I N G O
them was that the library is
not “your grandmother’s library” anymore.
Anyone that has stepped
into the building recently,
especially during Monday
morning story time, would
probably agree that the library is in the process of
reinventing itself. We’ve
gone from a very classic
20th Century library and are
beginning to become more
modern. But, I have just tak-
Opinion
Column
en the first steps to making
this library great, now it’s
your turn to tell me what you
want; after all this is YOUR
library.
Now you need to ask
yourself: what is it that will
bring me into the Library?
Do you want e-readers or
Internet hotspots that can
be checked out? What about
home improvement and gardening tools? A seed library
that would allow you to plant
new varieties of flowers and
vegetables in your garden?
Maybe you have a certain
book collection you would
like to be expanded, or more
DVDs and audiobooks.
What about fishing poles
that you can use at one of the
parks that surround us? The
possibilities are endless and
no idea is a bad idea!
While we will always
have books, we need to
make sure we stay relevant
to the community. If there
is something you would like
to see incorporated into the
library please write me an
email, stop into the library to
talk, call me (517) 663-8118
x4, find us on Facebook and
write me a note there, or stop
me on the street if you see
me. I want to see the library
succeed in the community,
but that is only possible with
your input. Just remember
these changes won’t happen
overnight, so even if you
don’t see radical changes
instantaneously just know
something is coming.

PASTOR’S CORNER
Look for the Robin!
Pastor Marty DeBow
First UMC of Eaton Rapids
Being a resident of Michigan, I’ve heard people say
repeatedly (and in exasperation), “I just cannot wait
for Spring!” From January on, this phrase is a great
conversation starter. However, I know people who never
say it. They just go to Florida. To be honest, I don’t say it
either. I just look for the robin.
Ever since I was a young boy, a tried-and-true sign that
spring was on the way was the sound of a robin. I heard
the robin’s call Friday morning at first light. I’m confident
spring is close.
In a world such as ours it is important to look for the
signs. When I open my eyes to a new day, when I witness
kind and generous people around me, when I see smiles
on the faces of children and hear words of hope, I know
God exists and God is close.
In my world, there are demands to be met and bills to
pay. I never know what will happen from day to day. So
I watch and listen for signs; a mother’s love for her child,
words from a neighbor, “how can I be of help?” and many
others. Such signs of grace and goodness all point to the
constancy and closeness of your God and mine. May you
watch and listen for God signs this season.
