Allegany State Park Trip March 2 Monthly Meeting Join us on Wed
Issue # 15 Month # 3 March 2011 Allegany State Park Trip March 2 Monthly Meeting Join us on Wed March 2 when our featured speaker Dr. D'Urso will answer the question - Just how large was the largest flood down Slippery Rock Creek? The BOC Allegany State Park Ski Trip was enjoyed by all. I know Ray, Jan and I had a good time. Snow conditions were great on Saturday. We skied and snowshoed Saturday and skied in the morning Sunday before heading home. The cabins were very nice and we had plenty of good food for the potluck dinner Sat. night. Tammy New North Country Trail Website The new and improved northcountrytrail.org is online. Check it out and you will find a new look, more detailed trail information, better volunteer resources and greater functionality and navigability. Best of all, we see this as the next step in building a seamless national and chapter web presence, owned and updated by the membership, with huge potential for member and chapter engagement. Renew your BOC membership in March! Dr. Gary D'Urso (pronounced DER.so) will describe his dissertation work on the Revised Glacial Margins and Wisconsin Meltwater Paleoflood Hydrology in Slippery Rock Creek Basin, Central Western Pennsylvania. Dr. D'Urso will describe his remapping of the glacial margins in the Slippery Rock Creek basin plus his study of the largest meltwater flood during the last glacial period. His work corrects previous errors in glacial mapping and shows that the estimates of the largest Wisconsin meltwater flood were off by orders of magnitude. Dr. D'Urso was born and raised in Greenville, PA and now resides in Butler, PA. He received his BA from Thiel College, MS from the University of Pittsburgh and PhD from West Virginia University. Dr. D’Urso has worked for the US Army Corps of Engineers, US Geological Survey and has taught at the high school and university levels. Overnight Backpacking -- Proposed Minister Valley Wilderness Area, Allegheny National Forest An overnight backpacking trip through the proposed Minister Valley Wilderness Area. This outing will give hikers a fine sense of wild, unroaded nature of this eminently qualified prospective addition to America's National Wilderness Preservation System. The hike will begin Saturday morning at the Minister Creek campground, and we will primarily use the seven-mile Minister Trail loop, taking us north to the North Country National Scenic Trail and the popular triple forks area. We may do some off-trail hiking as well, depending on the consensus of the group. Saturday evening we will stop along the way to make camp before dark, likely at triple forks. Hikers should bring all of their Mar own food & camping equipment, and come fully prepared for the weather. For an 5 example of one of FAW's past winter hikes, see this recent clip from an overnight winter 6 trip into Hickory Creek Wilderness: Hickory Creek Wilderness winter backpacking February, 2009 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WfvzKyMzfKk For sample descriptions of hiking in Minister Valley (spring & summer), see the following articles: "A Day Hike on the Minister Trail" (page 4): http://www.pawild.org/fawn/faw_v10no4.pdf "Favorite Hikes in Pennsylvania's ANF: Minister Valley": http://www.pawild.org/articles/northstarfall2010.pdf To RSVP, or for more information, contact Friends of Allegheny Wilderness using the below contact info.
