The Man vs. The Message

ost people have seen the recent
rants of Mel Gibson. At first
glance, one might decry “Mel,
Mel, what have you done now?” Others
may have responded (more appropriately)
by praying for him. In any case, there
seems to be a lot of “clean up” or “damage
control” when the media focuses on some
celebrity who has found him or herself in
hot water, especially if they had been
previously proclaiming Christ. Some
might try to excuse Gibson of his
shockingly angry verbiage. Others might
shake their head in judgment. There is a
myriad of reactions, to be sure. Is Gibson
the first to be caught acting
inappropriately after extolling the Glory of
the Lord? Certainly not. The nightly

newscast is often cluttered with religious
and political leaders’ moral failures. So, is
this really about Mel Gibson? True, he
helped bring many of us into a deeper
understanding of the suffering of Christ in
graphic display through the remarkable
film “Passion Of The Christ”. Should we
expect more of him? Emphatically “Yes”!
In fact, anyone who is in any position of
leadership, especially when it is involves
spiritual leadership, should be “expected”
to be a role model. This includes pastors
(not just mega-pastors), organization
leaders, authors, performers, and yesnewspaper editors! This includes anyone
who is leading, guiding, or
communicating the Truth of Christ. At this

point, many readers might be upset and
consider this piece “judgmental”.
Hopefully, you noticed that this writer is
included in that list. So, when we judge
others, we must judge ourselves by the
same standard (Mt 7:2). Notice, something
else, we should be “expected” to not fall
into sin. That’s because we are
commanded by God to live righteous and
holy lives. Unfortunately, knowing and
doing are not always in sync. Reality tells
us that we are in a sinful world with a
powerful draw to corruption. Our enemy is
helping in the process of leading us to fail.
It is always our choice, yet we have many
temptations. So, while we might “expect”
leaders to behave appropriately, it is
apparent that they will not always do so.
Some make the claim that “since we all
sin, we should just expect it, accept it, and
forgive it!” That is grace beyond God’s
own grace. He calls us to holiness. He
expects holiness but when we fall, confess,
and repent, He will forgive us (1 Jn 1:9)
our sins. Many consequences result from a
leader’s inappropriate behavior. First it
grieves God. (Do not grieve the Holy
Spirit - Eph 4:30). It also gives our faith
and the One we serve, “a black eye”.
Christians will be falsely accused, the

Bible says (1 Pet 2:12 ), but to be rightly
accused is a stain on the Bride of Christ.
However, possibly the most damaging
consequence that comes out of a leader’s
moral failure is that the lost would
discount the message due to the sins of the
messenger. For example, The Passion of
the Christ film was not only a huge box
office success, but also bolstered the faith
of many of God’s people and reignited a
once dim flame of faith for others. There is
no doubt that God used the film for His

mainstream media shines a brighter light
on the errors of those who publicly take a
stand for Jesus. The world is watching and
waiting for His people to fall. It is true that
we are not perfect. The world is not
looking for perfection in us, merely
integrity and character. The only perfect
One was and is Jesus the Messiah. If we
are to be followers of Him, share His love
and spread His Glory, then we need to do
so with integrity. Those in our community
who do not know the love and glory of
Jesus will only see it through His
followers. Yes, we should “expect” that
leaders will stay on the straight and narrow
path, but even if not, it does not invalidate
the message of the Truth of our Eternal,
Holy, Almighty God.

Message, dear reader, is bigger than the
person. The Gospel is larger than the
person sharing it. The ministry of The
Ambassador is bigger than its editor. The
various ministries and good works that we
all support are bigger than any one leader.
This means that whether a televangelist,
pastor of a church (“mega” or not), or,
more commonly, a Christian living his or
her life before the world, people are
watching. Let us not forget that the

Gears and Springs
Don't Lose Your Paddle
by Lee Roberts
The clock on the mantel always
intrigued me. For years Cliff and Darleen
had been faithful and gracious hosts of
our home Bible study and I always
looked forward to the special time spent
in their living room. As wonderful as
those times were, however, I was
mesmerized by the clock.
Perhaps you have seen one like it. It
was covered by a glass dome, the shiny,
golden works visible for all to see. In the
lower portion of the clock was a
contraption spinning four times one
direction. Then four times the opposite
direction. Then another four times in one
direction, only for it to spin the opposite
way four more times. Over and over it
would spin, only to repeat again and
again.
Then there were all the gears and
springs. Some were large and some quite
small. Some moved quickly and others
slowly. Some moved clockwise and
others counter-clockwise. And some
didn’t seem necessary for they didn’t
appear to move at all. Quite an amazing
piece of ingenuity that clock was!
Obviously, it was designed with the
goal of displaying the correct time.
Everything that happened within it
contributed to that end. No wasted
motion. No wasted parts. Every part
working for a common cause. A unified
purpose.
That almost sounds Biblical! In
Romans 8:28 we read, “And we know
that in all things God works for the good
of those who love Him, who have been
called according to His purpose.”
As we consider the various aspects
and events of our life, they resemble the
By Paula McBride
gears and springs of that clock. It is clear
how some parts of life can be used for His
purpose. It makes sense that God could
be using certain things. We understand
that logic. But what about the other
things? The frustrations? The hardships?
The discouragements? The things we
would rather do without? How can God
use THOSE things for His purpose?
I don’t really know how to answer
that question other than to say, the fella
who designed that clock saw a need for
parts I did not understand. It made no
sense to me, but to the designer, that extra
gear and spring was perfectly logical.
Likewise, to our divine Creator (or
Designer), what makes no sense to us is
perfectly logical. His divine wisdom
recognizes a need for something that
may seem counter-productive to us but is
in reality eternally necessary.
In essence, if it is logical to the One
who is the “Giver of every good and
perfect gift” (James 1:17), shouldn’t that
reality give us peace as we faithfully
endure what we may not understand?
I would think so!

I Love My Work”
I used to think that the way to get from
point A to point B on a river was to float
most of the time and paddle as needed. I
guess my perceptions were based on lazy
rivers at waterslide parks. Well, I was in
for a perception change when I went to
Canoe Camp with young people from area
churches. After being guaranteed that I
wouldn't get wet because the paddler in the
back of my canoe (the "stern") hadn't
capsized in twenty years (that may be
exaggerated), I agreed to leave my duties
in the kitchen and try on the role of canoe
camper. I had missed the day of training
when the campers learned how to handle
their paddles and their craft.
They
practiced balance, the different strokes,
and their favorite activity, capsizing and
saving each other. I didn't know any of
this when I set out, but I did know one
thing the kids had talked about: Never,
ever, ever, lose your paddle!
I didn't lose my paddle, but I did cause
my "stern" to lose her reputation for not
capsizing. I also learned a lot about hard
work, team work, and facing fear. The
capsizing and rescue became the part of
the trip I remember as the most fun.
I used to think that when Jesus said He
came to give life abundantly, He meant a
lazy ride on His blessings, but that
perception changed when I found the verse
that told us we would have troubles in this
world. Many of the tips the canoe campers
learned apply to our journey on the river of
life. For example:
1. Plan to tip over. When a paddler
plans to tip over, he learns to tie everything
down. Sunglasses get tied to a hat band,
and water bottles and fanny packs get tied
to a cross beam. You prepare in advance to
hang on to the paddle. If you do lose it,
you pray someone coming behind you will
pick it up and hand it back. In the upsets of
life, God's Word is our paddle. It is the
guidebook for our journey, and without it,
we are adrift. We need to fasten our beliefs
to a secure foundation, the principles we
find in the Bible.
2. Listen for the whistle. Strong,
experienced paddlers occupied first and
last positions in small groups called
"flights." Rookies stayed in between so
they wouldn't become stragglers. If a
canoe capsized, the leader blew a whistle
and everyone nearby knew to look for a
"rescue." The campers took this very
seriously and used the skills they had
practiced to upturn the canoe and help its
occupants back on board. In life, we need
the companionship of other believers,
some stronger than ourselves, so when we
falter, God can use them to lift us up. We
need to be in tune to a "whistle" from God
when he wants to use us to help another.
3. Have fun. No doubt about it: for
me, canoeing was hard work. But the joy
of the journey far surpassed the pain (that
lasted for days!). Life is hard work, too,
yet we can be joyful in the current planned
for us. Let's launch out and let God be our
Captain. Be careful not to lose the paddle,
though! The Word of God keeps us going
in the right direction on the river of life.

The Ambassador and the Waitress
By Greg Koukl - Stand To Reason Ministries (str.org)
We talk a lot at STR about what it
means to be an ambassador for Christ
(remember 2 Corinthians 5:20?). You
might have wondered how this works out
in the nuts and bolts of daily life. It
occurred to me that sometimes being a
good representative of the Kingdom
hinges on the simplest things, almost
trivial.
Let me give you an example from my
own life.
I have had some of the most
interesting conversations about spiritual
matters with ordinary people who serve
my table in restaurants. Since any contact
with others is an opportunity to be an
ambassador, I try to keep an eye open for
what might turn out to be a “divine
appointment.”
This is something you can do, too.
Here are some ways to set the stage to
engage them in a friendly way.
First, find out the server’s name.
This is simple if they’re wearing a
nametag. If not, simply ask. If it’s a
unique name or suggests some ethnic
history, ask about it. It’s a friendly thing to
do—even flattering—and will help you
remember their name better.
The second thing to do: Leave a
decent tip. (The after-church crowd is
notorious for stiffing the restaurant help.)
There’s one last thing I do, and it may
be the most important. As I’m walking
out, I make a point to find the waiter or
waitress and simply say, “Thank you.” It’s
a small gesture, but I want their last
impression of me to be as pleasant as their
first.
What’s the real goal behind this
modest effort? Simply this: People are
important to the Lord, and if they are
important to Him, they should be
important to you and me.
Addressing a person by their name
and showing genuine appreciation for
service are simple ways to show that they
are valued. This speaks volumes about the
One you represent. Never underestimate
the role of simply being warm and
pleasant.
How do they know I’m a Christian?
Maybe they don’t. However, since we
always bow our heads to give thanks at our
table, and the server may overhear
snatches of conversation about spiritual
things, it’s certainly possible they’ll make
the connection. The last thing I want
anyone to do is associate my prayer or my
Bible or my Christian tract with rudeness,
stinginess, or a demanding, highmaintenance customer.
It may be that we never get around to
spiritual matters—in point of fact, we
usually don’t. Even so, I still want to leave
behind a “fragrant aroma” for the sake of
Christ. That’s one of the reasons Paul says
in Colossians 3:17, “And whatever you do
in word or deed, do all in the name of the
Lord Jesus”—that is, as His representative
and consistent with His wishes.

Faith in Action
By Dan Duran
by Jo Lynne Keough - Yuba City
Dear friends, do you think you'll
get anywhere in this if you learn all the
right words but never do anything?
Does merely talking about faith
indicate that a person really has it? For
instance, you come upon an old friend
dressed in rags and half-starved and say,
"Good morning, friend! Be clothed in
Christ! Be filled with the Holy Spirit!"
and walk off without providing so much
as a coat or a cup of soup—where does
that get you? Isn't it obvious that Godtalk without God-acts is outrageous
nonsense? James 2:14-17 (The
Message)
This month I feel compelled to
write about something that has been
heavy on my heart. I am going to lay
the cards down on the table and ask two
simple questions... What is holding
you back? What is your obstacle?
Time and again I meet people
wanting to take control of their health.
They say they are ready. They say they
are sick and tired of being sick and tired.
They are then asked if they would like
nutritional counseling and most often
their answer is, “I know how to eat
right.” When asked about personal
training they say, “That’s why I joined
the gym, to work out on my own.” I
look at their health questionnaire and
inevitably one of their top four reasons
for joining a gym is to lose weight. Yet,
after seeing them pop into the gym for
about a week or two, walking around
aimlessly, trying this machine and that
one, they disappear. I rarely see them
again. Their gym dues and enrollment
fees spent for nothing. Their intentions
were great, but the effort and
commitment was not there.
On the flip side, I often see the
same people in a gym, week after week,
month after month, sometimes year
after year, making no progress. Their
body composition and fitness levels
remain the same. This occurs because
of poor nutrition and lack of education.
What if we practiced our faith in
this manner? What if we went to church
a few times and purchased a bible?
Then we disappeared, doing things “our
own way.” Or, what it we went to
church every week, but didn’t apply
what we had learned and did not
educate ourselves further in the word of
God?
Faith without works is spiritual
death. Good intentions for improving
health without physical work and
education are physical death. So I ask
you again… What is holding you back?
What is your obstacle?

Desperately Needed
My husband had a ministry
emergency. One Friday afternoon two
church families desperately needed his
presence. One family had a large wedding
planned for the next day. The wedding
party was gathering at a church so Pastor
Todd could guide them through the
rehearsal. Another family had a medical
emergency at a hospital and needed his
presence and prayers. He couldn’t be in
both places at once. How could he
disappoint either family?
“I’ll take the wedding rehearsal,” I
offered.
“Are you sure? By yourself?” my
husband asked. He knew that leading in
front is not my nature. I’m at home in the
background.
“Sure. I’ve been to more of your
weddings than anyone. I can handle it. You
go to the hospital.”
I was surprised at how confident I
sounded. After all, I would have to face the
disappointment of the bride and her
family. I could see the instant relief on my
husband’s face.
“Thanks,” he said, “you’re really coming
through for me.”
Women often come through when
desperately needed. In fact, when we do,
we are fulfilling our God-given role. In
Genesis 1:18 God plans to make a “helper
suitable” for Adam. Our English
translation “helper” doesn’t sound very
heroic. More like second fiddle or second
class. However, a better translation of the
Hebrew phrase might be “lifesaving
partner.”
As the authors of Captivating point out,
every other time the word for helper (ezer)
is used, it refers to God himself, especially
when he is needed desperately.
The Bible reminds us often that God is
our helper. “We wait in hope for the
LORD, he is our help and shield (Psalm
33:20). God knew that men would need
ezer. He supplies it himself and also
through specially designed partners—us!
Again we see the Bible teaching that
women are not an afterthought. We are
essential to God’s plan. Eve had a mission
to help Adam in the Garden of Eden. How
much more valuable are we now that we
live in a toil-filled, dangerous world?
A woman whose life revolves around
herself is missing the point of who she was
created to be. We women are irreplaceable
in helping those people God has placed in
our lives. We are often the hands and feet
and voices of God, the source of help,
when we allow him to direct us in our
mission.
Helping won’t always be easy. I took a
risk to stand in for my husband at the
wedding rehearsal that evening.
Thankfully, the bride and her family were
gracious. God was my ezer that night. Just
as I will be for my husband the next time he
desperately needs me to come through.

The Oyster and the Pearl:
10 Tips for Dealing with Jerks!
By Steve Arterburn - New Life Ministries (newlife.com)
1. Realize that you can’t please
everyone ‘ even Jesus had trouble with
that. ‘And there was a grumbling among
the multitudes concerning Him; some
were saying, ‘He is a good man’; others
were saying, ‘No, on the contrary, He leads
the multitude astray’” (John 7:12).
2. Difficult people thrive in the center
of controversy. ‘Like charcoal to hot
embers and wood to fire,’ says Proverbs
26:21, ‘so is a contentious man to kindle
strife.’ Don’t be drawn into unnecessary
situations. Misery really does love
company!
3. Set clear personal boundaries for
appropriate behavior with difficult people.
Communicate with them in a gentle, but
clear manner.
4. Never retaliate. In the mind of the
difficult person, it justifies their behavior.
5. If you have a moment of rational
communication with a difficult person, try
to help them see how destructive their
behavior is to themselves, their family and
their career.
6. When a difficult person goes into
attack mode or excessive defensiveness,
recognize that it is useless to argue with
them. ‘Do not answer a fool according to
his folly, lest you also be like him’
(Proverbs 26:4).
7. Learn to recognize when your
defense mechanisms come up. Realize
that getting defensive will only exacerbate
the process of dealing with difficult
people.
8. A difficult person’s behavior is
really out of your control. Pray for them
and let God deal with them. ‘Love your
enemies,’ said Jesus, ‘and pray for those
who persecute you’ (Matthew 5:44).
9. When you’re facing on-going
communication problems with a difficult
person, it’s often helpful to invite the help
of a neutral third party to facilitate the
process of better communication.
10. Take advantage of the many
books, tapes and helpful guides that deal
with this common issue.

A Family Guide to Movies and Entertainment
RAMONA AND BEEZUS is a funny,
heartfelt family film. It follows the
exploits of young Ramona Quimby. The
middle child of three girls, Ramona
struggles to fit in both at home and at
school. At home, she must please her
parents while following in the footsteps
of her older sister Beezus, who is
beautiful, popular and gets perfect
grades. Ramona looks forward to getting
a room of her own, but then her father
loses his job, so she tries to help out by
making money selling lemonade and
auditioning for a TV commercial. When
her efforts fail, Ramona begins to think
that her family is better without her. So,
she thinks about running away.
Based on a popular series of
children’s books, RAMONA AND
BEEZUS is a delightful, winsome
family movie that will entertain both
young and old. Joey King is a perfect
Ramona. Her endearing performance is
reason enough to see the movie. In fact,
there is good chemistry among the
whole cast. Most importantly,
RAMONA AND BEEZUS is
appropriate for children of all ages. It
also contains many Christian, moral

"Nightshade"
by Ronie Kendig
I LOVE a good military suspense
novel, and I fell for Ronie Kendig's
writing style in her last story, "Dead
Reckoning". When I heard she was
creating a four book series, I could barely
stand the wait!
From the cover art to the concept to
the story, everything was just as I'd
anticipated. And her idea to write a series
about our "Discarded Heroes" is just
brilliant. It's about time we all woke up
and realized what service to our country
really costs.
In "Nightshade", Max Jacobs has
returned home a changed man. So
changed, his marriage may be over.
Trouble is, he's still deeply in love with
his estranged wife, Sydney. So why can't
they just settle their issues and put their
lives back together?
Could it be because Sydney has had
to get a restraining order against Max,
fearful that he could hurt her...again? And
why won't Max get help for his PTSD?
When a mysterious man approaches
Max for an elite and deeply covert group
of discarded veterans with top-notch
skills, what is there to hold him back?
Thus, the black-ops group 'Nightshade' is
born.
No one knows of their existence save
themselves and their creator...and one
person from Capitol Hill. Every
operation is clandestine and dangerous,
and they are just the men for the job.
But when word gets out about a
group that slips in and slips out in dead of
night, helping where no one else can
help...will their cover be blown? A
missionary family finds themselves
stranded in the middle of a war zone...a
job for "Nightshade".
Can they all make it out...and avoid
the reporter hot on their heels for the story
of her career? Will this elite group find
their purpose again in helping the
helpless? And can Max ever make peace
with his time in war?
Ronie has not only crafted an
excellent read, she's put the spotlight on a

little understood topic and given the men
and women who return home from battle
flesh and blood through her characters.
When we read Max's story, we must
ask ourselves two questions: just how
grateful are we for the men and women
who serve, and just how often do we
express that gratitude to them when we
encounter them?
And do we pray? Do we pray for
them as they serve? Do we pray for their
re-entry into society? For their families?
That they will receive the help that they
need to deal with all they've seen and
done?
Ronie's novel does more than
entertain. It makes you think. At least, it
made me think. I am so looking forward
to her next novel in the "Discarded
Heroes" series, 'Digitalis'.
My thanks to my friends at Barbour

to the men and women and their families
who put it all on the line to keep us safe. I
salute you. And I pray for you.

Obama Funds Vote on Abortion in Kenya Is This How He'll Fund Abortion in the U.S.?
Sends tax dollars to advocacy groups
WASHINGTON, July 15 /Christian
Newswire/ -- New evidence reveals that
the Obama administration has given up to
$10 million to groups in Kenya that are
campaigning for a "Yes" vote on a new
constitution that would legalize abortion.
Though officials denied the U.S.
government is trying to influence the
election, documents from U.S. Agency for
International Development (USAID)
show funding agreements with
organizations to target certain populations
to "drum up political support" for the draft
constitution.
The U.S. Embassy in Nairobi claims
the U.S. is neutral on the constitution. But
an investigation launched by U.S.
congressmen unearthed documents
showing how the Obama Administration is
funding outside organizations to influence
the vote.
This same week, the Obama
Administration was caught giving $160
million to Pennsylvania to fund a plan

under ObamaCare that will cover any legal
abortion in the state. Federal officials
claim that, despite what is written in the
plan, it will be limited to abortions in the
case of rape, incest, and life of the mother.
"We can learn how the Obama
Administration will behave in our own
country by its actions in Kenya. Despite a
federal law banning the government from
using foreign aid to lobby for or against
abortion, the Administration has given up
to $10 million to sway an election that
would result in legalizing abortion. If
President Obama is sincere in his promise
to 'reduce the need for abortions,' then he
must stop funding organizations -internationally and domestically -- that are
dedicated to increasing abortions," said
Wendy Wright, President of Concerned
Women for America.

Want Contentment?
By Dave Kugelman - Marysville
Jesus said that it is more blessed to
give than receive. I believe that there are
many unhappy, discontented Christians
today because most of their focus is on
the man or woman in the mirror. Here is
the main point: If anyone is trying to find
ultimate contentment by always
pleasing him or herself, that person will
be disappointed.
True contentment comes when we
give of ourselves to others.
In Matthew 20:28, Jesus said, “For
even I, the Son of Man, came here not to
be served but to serve others….”
Hmm… maybe Jesus modeled
something significant by serving others?
And maybe Jesus is onto something
when He says that we are more blessed
when we give then when we get. Sounds
like a win-win situation. Others win
because we serve them by giving of
ourselves (time, talents and treasures)
and we win because Jesus says we are
more blessed when we give.
Alright, now that I have presented
the benefits of giving and serving, I want
to invite you to the Christian Business
Alliance prayer meetings. Yes, prayer
meetings. You can show your love and
across the globe. It is a chance for women from
different backgrounds to come together to worship
and learn on the same level. Beth Moore is an
excellent Bible teacher and our worship leader will
be Travis Cottrell.

A BETTER YARD CARE
Just one week after a federal appeals
court opened the door for the F-word to be
used freely on broadcast TV, an Arkansas
company says they have a solution: Filter
the words out on your own.
TVGuardian, LLC is just this week
receiving shipment of the first of their new
profanity filters -- boxes that connect to
TVs and automatically filter out foul
language.
"It's now clear families can't rely on
broadcasters to provide profanity-free
TV," says TVGuardian, LLC President
Britt Bennett. "Families have to take
matters into their own hands to protect
themselves from obscenity."
A second new model is due to be
released next month, one that works with
high definition TV. Both new models are
available on the company
website,www.tvguardian.com.
What's new about the new models?
"New software, new boxes, now in HD,
and a new rental program," says Bennett.
"Families can now rent TVGuardian for as
low as $6.99 a month."
Another difference with the new
TVGuardian units is that they will not be
available in stores. "The people who seem
to respond best to TVGuardian are people
of faith," says Bennett, "so we'll be
working with ministry partners to help
them tell their supporters about this
technology.”
TVGuardian was invented by Rick
Bray in 1997, and the company produced
more than 400,000 units before
discontinuing production in order to
pursue licensing. They successfully
licensed their foul language filtering
technology into over 12 million DVD
players. Their return to the marketplace
with new set top boxes comes after a
nearly three year absence.
"I used to be more hopeful about the
future of TV for our children," says
Bennett. "But now that even the F-word is
allowed? At any time of day? It looks like
we'll be in business for a while still."

Slogan: “Go with God! and God will go with you!”
Years in Yuba-Sutter Area: 3.5 years
Hobbies: The Study of God's Word; Preach and Teach God's Word
Favorite Quote/Verse: Trust in the Lord with all your heart; don't lean on
your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him and He will
direct your path.
Inspiring Persons: The greatest inspiration of all, Jesus Christ. Second to
Him, my favorite person is the shepherd boy turned King of Israel - God's
psalmist, David.
"Hot Button"/Passion: Preaching the uncompromised Word of God in
love, with God's anointing, for the purpose of helping to bring change to
hurting and broken lives. Anecdotes, quips and stories cannot change lives
like the Word of God can and will. We are "washed by the water of the
Word", a cleansing that can only come from God's Word and Ministers are
responsible to provide that water to and for the hearer. Watered down,
compromised Word (feel good Gospel) cannot help anyone. We ministers
are commanded to "preach the truth in love" that God's people may grow
up into Him.
Home Church: Grizzly Creek Christian Fellowship (Clipper Mills) CoPastor with Don Younce
Message to the Community/Other Comments: I love truth and the Truth.
We're promised that knowing the Truth will set us free. By God's grace, I''m

OPINIONS
All Creation Points To God
By Jon Skillman
“For since the creation of the world
God’s invisible qualities--his eternal
power and divine nature--have been
clearly seen, being understood from what
has been made, so that men are without
excuse.” Romans 1:20 (NIV)
Last month’s Ambassador cover piece
was titled “America The Beautiful.” In this
article it was stated that, “how anyone can
live in this blessed country and maintain,
there is no God, is mind boggling.” This
very question kept running through my
mind as my wife and I celebrated our 50th
anniversary cruising Alaska. How anyone
can witness the majesty and grandeur of
His Mountains… See the intricate balance
He has placed in nature and still not
believe He exist is not only mind boggling,
it is ludicrous.
The whale in the sea, the eagle on air
and the bear in the wilderness all point to
His glory. Countless salmon migrate into
pristine waters to fulfill their destiny and
His purpose. It is all there and if we cannot
see it… We are without excuse.
But one doesn’t have to travel to
Alaska to feel the presence of God. It
doesn’t take the power of a glacier or the
splendor of snow capped mountains to
move one to believe (although it does
make it easier). The hand of God can be
seen in the tiniest and seemingly
insignificant things. The complexity of an
ant colony, the beauty that attracts the bee
to the blossom and the raindrop that
sustains and rejuvenates life are all
creations of God. But one must view
nature through spiritual eyes, contemplate
with an open mind and find understanding
in an unhardened heart.

AS WE SEE IT
Breaking Out
Lessons from Alcatraz
By Seth Halpern
Seth Halpern - Editor
I think it was my observation of nature
that ultimately provided me with the
preponderance of evidence as to the
existence of God.
It is simply
inconceivable that all things are merely a
result of happenstance.
There is a
structure to nature, a design, a balance and
dependency that goes beyond coincidence
and chance.
All things were created with a specific
purpose, and even though I may not
understand why God make mosquitoes,
ticks and other bloodsuckers, I know they
have a purpose in His plan. And even
though I could do quite well without
snakes, wasps and spiders, God has chosen
not to make their purpose know to me. Oh
I know they all perform God’s objective,
I’d just prefer they perform their objective
elsewhere.
I also know there are many out there
who say creation is the non-thinker’s
explanation for all things (I know because
I did). But like many scientists, the more I
discovered, the more everything points to
God. I have found that God’s word holds
the answer to all questions… Even the
answer to the perplexing matter of,
”Which came first the chicken or the egg?”
the answer is found in Genesis 1.
Don’t be found without excuse, look
around you and see the invisible qualities
of God.
Recently our family took a tour of
Alcatraz. While listening and reading
of the many escape attempts, we
discussed why inmates would take such
extreme risks to escape the fortress-like
prison. It is truly amazing to look at the
difficulty involved with breaking out of
such a secure facility, only to be greeted
by the frigid, violent waters more than a
mile from true escape. Yet many tried,
unsuccessfully. The reason, as it
became clear, was that the boredom,
loneliness, and suffering were
overwhelming enough for many to take
the chance of being killed. They were,
in a word, desperate. Desperation
drives us to do, say, and even believe
things that we would never heard
considered under normal situations. I
thought about the beautiful and
breathtaking view of the San Francisco
skyline these men looked at each day.
At first I was almost envious of their
“million-dollar view”. People pay a big
price for a home that overlooks a great
view. These men were paying “a big
price” for their crimes. Then there’s the
Warden who is interested only in
punishment, before the correctional
rehabilitation mindset began. As I
began to see this scenario in spiritual
pictures, I saw that many of my “co-

tourists” were spiritually in the same
situation as the men whose facility they
toured. Those walking around without
Christ were in a prison of sin. Each in a
small cell with nothing to look forward
to, know one to ultimately love, and
eternity awaiting on the “wrong” side
of the eternal chasm. They would only
see the beauty of Heaven across a great
divide that would remind them of their
punishment and what could have been.
Like the warden, the Devil is only
interested in our punishment and
tormenting human beings with the
temptation of what could have been.
We who are in Christ and have a
father/child relationship with the
“Judge” don’t have to fear the dreaded
D Block isolation of our souls. In an
instant we are transported to the other
side of the Bay!

Can anything ever separate us from Christ's love?
Does it mean he no longer loves us if we have trouble
or calamity, or are persecuted, or are hungry or cold
or in danger or threatened with death?
Even the Scriptures say, "For your sake we are killed every day;
we are being slaughtered like sheep."
No, despite all these things, overwhelming victory
is ours through Christ, who loved us.
And I am convinced that nothing can ever separate us
from his love. Death can't, and life can't.
The angels can't, and the demons can't.
Our fears for today, our worries about tomorrow,
and even the powers of hell can't keep God's love away.
Whether we are high above the sky or in the deepest ocean,
nothing in all creation will ever be able to separate us
from the love of God that is revealed in Christ Jesus our Lord.
(Rom 8:35-39 NLT)
