THE POSITION
The Finneytown Local School District Board of Education
is seeking exceptional candidates for the position of
superintendent of schools. The ideal applicant will
know how to articulate educational excellence and help
staff achieve it; how to build confidence, initiative and
community; how to manage resources and oversee
operations; and how to connect students, staff, parents
and community. The vacancy has been created by
the resignation of Tyrone Olverson who has served as
superintendent for three years.
The community offers the largest concentration of retail
businesses in Springfield Township and partners with the
township on economic development, fine arts offerings
and community engagement. Nearby Winton Woods
is a regional draw for golf, hiking, boating and other
recreational pursuits.
One-time home to a disproportionate number of highachievers – among them, General Electric CEO Jeffrey
Immelt, Olympic gymnast Amanda Borden and the late
renowned Cincinnati artist Charlie Harper – Finneytown
models the best in the American character: friendliness,
modesty, generosity, unpretentiousness and fairmindedness.
A roughly 20-minute commute from Downtown Cincinnati,
Finneytown offers easy access to I-75, I-275 and
Cross County Highway. Affordable housing, walkable
neighborhoods, racial and economic diversity, a reputation
for safety and a culture of inclusiveness make it an
attractive choice for young families, empty nesters and
senior citizens alike.
Numbers, however, tell only part of the Finneytown story.
Inclusion is a thread that runs through the school district.
Students with special needs not only receive speech,
language, physical and occupational therapy, they’re elected
homecoming queen, are cheerleaders and have major roles
in arts performances. On World Culture Day, the district
celebrates students who come from 15 different homelands.
The high school is small enough to offer students multiple
opportunities for leadership and involvement – it’s not
unusual to see a football player spend half-time playing in
the marching band, for example – but ambitious enough to
offer 15 Advanced Placement courses in which 42 percent
of high school students are enrolled. Students can sign up
for art glass, Rock and Roll Academy, media and design and
digital electronics.
THE COMMUNITY
Finneytown is a hard-working community of 12,800
residents that values families, education, civicmindedness, service and personal connection. It is
located directly north of the City of Cincinnati, bordered
by Wyoming and North College Hill, and is the largest
neighborhood in Springfield Township. Finneytown is a
place where crowds turn out for the annual Homecoming
Parade, residents check in on elderly neighbors and
community members have passed every school operating
levy put before them for the last 40 years – on the first
ballot.
The district has a 91% four-year graduation rate, 96%
attendance rate and 15% mobility rate. Per-pupil spending is
$10,527. The community has the third-highest voted millage
in Hamilton County, an indication of the confidence residents
place in the fiscal management of the district.
THE SCHOOL DISTRICT
With 1,463 students, the Finneytown Local School District
is large enough to offer rich opportunities in academics,
fine arts and extracurriculars and small enough to have the
feel of an extended family. It is comprised of three schools:
Brent Elementary, grades K-2; Whitaker Elementary,
grades 3-6; and Finneytown Secondary Campus, grades
7-12.
A point of pride is that the district offers students and staff
the chance to learn and work in schools with an even racial
balance, which has held steady over the last five years.
In the 1980s, Finneytown was a trailblazer in service
learning and the district on which many other schools
modeled their programs. The importance of service is still
in the district’s DNA, from elementary students who pay for
Honor Flights for military veterans to WildcatSERVE, the
PTA outreach that devotes roughly $7,000 annually to food,
clothing and support for up to 40 families with needs.
And the quest for higher achievement goes on. The district
will add all-day kindergarten in 2016-17, is increasing the
rigor of its middle-school curriculum, and will offer more than
50 opportunities for professional development.
QUALIFICATIONS
The successful candidate will:
•
Be a child-centered decision maker with
a comprehensive view of education, a working
knowledge of curriculum and instruction and a
commitment to the development of all children.
• Be visible and accessible to students, staff and
community.
• Listen, create buy-in and make decisions.
• Have the ability to transform challenges into
opportunities.
•
Be a sound fiscal manager who balances legal,
judicial and financial requirements of the district
with the needs of students and the desires of
the community.
