Summer 2014
45TH ANNIVERSARY OF TWINNING BETWEEN
WINDSOR & MAIDENHEAD AND GOSLAR 1969-2014
2014 marks the 45th Anniversary of Twinning
between Windsor & Maidenhead and Goslar.
In recognition of this a small delegation from
Goslar was invited to the Borough between the
15th and 18th June 2014. Whilst the official
Twinning only started in 1969 contact with Goslar
began in 1949 between Erich Brennecke Youth
Officer in Goslar and Maude Swain and Bob
Hutton from Windsor.
This resulted in an exchange of young people
between the towns in 1951, the start of
exchanges that continued for over fifty years.

Renate Lucksch Burgermeisterin of Goslar, who
led the delegation in June was one such
teenager, who took part in the Youth Exchanges.
Staying with local families, getting to know and
understand each other's cultures, but also seeing
the values and hopes that both communities
share. The links expanded over the years to
include sports clubs, the Fire Brigade, Police,
schools and musicians amongst others.
/contd…
For many of the Goslar delegation this was their
first visit to the Borough and they certainly
appeared to appreciate the opportunity to stay
with local families, which gave the visit a very
relaxed feel. Common issues faced by the two
communities and possible future programmes
were also discussed.
The programme for the visit was full and varied
starting with a buffet supper on the Sunday
evening at the home of Mary and Tony Stock and
the opportunity for our guests to try some of our
local ales.
On Monday there was a visit to Windsor Castle
to view the Garter Procession with all its pomp
and ceremony followed by tea and biscuits at the
Guildhall in Windsor hosted by the Mayor and
Mayoress, Cllr & Mrs Richard Kellaway. In the
evening there was a dinner at Eton College
Rowing Lake attended by members of the
Twinning Committee and members of the
Windsor St George Rotary Club, who have
strong links with their sister club in Goslar. All
were impressed with seeing the rowing venue for
the 2012 Olympic Games and the evening was
topped off by a beautiful sunset over Dorney
Lake.
On Tuesday, following a traditional English
Brunch at the Sun and Stars in Holyport, the
group made their way to Royal Ascot and their
second opportunity to see the Queen and
members of the Royal Family in their carriages
riding along the course.
RBWM Mayor Cllr Richard Kellaway accepts a commemorative gift from Renate Lucksch Burgermeisterin of Goslar
The formal anniversary dinner was held at the
Guildhall in Windsor in the evening when Cllr
Richard Kellaway, Mayor of The Royal Borough
of Windsor & Maidenhead and Renate Lucksch
Burgermeisterin of Goslar reaffirmed both towns’
commitment to twinning links by signing a
commemorative scroll and the exchange of
official gifts.
On the last day there was a visit to the Stanley
Spencer Gallery and tour around Cookham,
highlighting parts of the village that were
important in Stanley Spencer's life. This was
followed by a visit to Norden Farm Centre for The
Arts where our visitors were give an opportunity
to tour the site, learn how the centre is run and
gain an insight into its various programmes and
events.
All too soon the visit was over, but the abiding
memory is of strengthened links with old friends
and the building of links with new ones, which
augurs well for the joint future of our two
communities.

CAF€ MOZART IN GOSLAR
Windsor-based chamber music ensemble CAF€
MOZART (Director Derek McCulloch) toured Lower
Saxony from 21-26th May with four concerts. This
formed part of the celebrations of the 300th
Anniversary of the coronation of Elector Georg
Ludwig of Hannover as simultaneous King of Great
Britain & Ireland. This joint rule over separate
territories lasted 123 years till the accession of
Queen Victoria in 1837, in the wake of Kings George
I-IV and William IV.
CAF€ MOZART's first concert was in the famous
Stabkirche in Goslar-Hahnenklee, a replication of
Norwegian mediaeval wooden churches. A large,
almost capacity audience, heard music by Haydn,
written for London in 1783, but reprinted in
Braunschweig a decade later, with songs by Haydn's
friend, the Earl of Abingdon.
Thereafter, music by three forgotten Lower Saxon
composers, Bornhardt (Braunschweig), Jusdorf and
Streitwolf (both Gőttingen). Their music was written
almost with CAF€ MOZART in mind, deploying
soprano (Emily Atkinson), flute (Jenny Thomas),
violin (Ilana Cravitz) and bass viol/guitar (Ian
Gammie). Derek McCulloch introduced the various
items.
Our accommodation was split between the Haus am
Hochwald (Emily, Ilana) while the remainder were in
the excellent Hahnenkleer Hof, owned by Frau
Lattemann, a former Mayor of Goslar and keen
member of the twinning committee. Here we
celebrated the Director's 76th birthday, at a
beautifully prepared round table, with Sekt (German
bubbly) kindly proffered by Frau Lattemann
CAF€ MOZART
.
The ensemble them moved on for the remainder of
the tour, funded by the Stiftung/Musikland
Niedersachsen: Gőttingen (Music Department of the
University), Peine and finally Wolfenbüttel, where the
concert began by the ensemble performing a chorale
by the composer Johann Rosenmüller and each
laying a rose underneath the memorial tablet on the
wall of the beautiful St Johanniskirche.
CAF€ MOZART will be repeating some of the same
music in October. On 1st October in St Albans (the
actual date of the coronation in 1714) and on 3rd
October in the Dungeon of the Curfew Tower of
Windsor Castle. For more details contact Derek
McCulloch at [email protected] or

GOSLAR SENIORENAKADEMIE VISITS TO WINDSOR
On 25th April and 7th May the Mayor, Cllr
Andrew Jenner, welcomed groups of Senior
Citizens from Goslar's Seniorenakademie to
receptions at the Guildhall, Windsor. Such was
the demand for the April trip that it was decided
to arrange a visit for a second group in
May. There were forty-seven visitors in each
group under the leadership of Mr Wolfgang Jäger
and all of them were keen to visit places of
interest in England. After disembarking from the
ferry at Harwich their first port of call was
Cambridge. The following day was spent in Bath
and the next day they visited their twin town of
Windsor.
Cllr Jenner with Vivien Williams Chair of Twinning, the Town Crier and Goslar Senior Citizens
The visitors enjoyed hearing from Cllr Jenner
about the Mayoralty and his year of office, as
well as learning something of the history of the
Guildhall. They enjoyed a welcome cup of tea or
coffee and emerged from the Guildhall to the
splendid sight of the band returning from the
Castle after the Guard change. They then went
off in the capable charge of a German-
speaking Blue Badge Guide, Laura ComleySmith, to tour the town and visit the Castle.
The Senior Citizens were very enthusiastic and
interested visitors, who said how much they had
enjoyed their visit and how impressed they were
with their visit to Windsor.

After a lunch in a nearby restaurant, there was
time to explore the South Bank or to do some
shopping before returning to Windsor. The official
dinner was held in the Guildhall on Saturday
evening, hosted by the Mayor. This was a very
congenial evening and a chance for the visitors
to meet with old friends and make new contacts.
get to know some of the Mayor's other guests in
the festively transformed Desborough Suite and
the superb music from the BBO Big Band.
On Saturday the guests were taken to London's
South Bank for a backstage tour of the National

they appreciated the chance to see so much and
to learn about the day-to-day life of the theatre.
On Sunday morning there was a business
meeting for representatives of the Twin Towns to
discuss
current
and
future
twinning
projects. Some of the guests departed for
their journeys home after the meeting and some

Castle before setting off for the airport.
