The month of April was the start of some fun outdoor activities. Beginning with our resident’s first walk or being wheeled
around the block of the season. Thank you staff members and the Coffeyville Community College nursing that helped kick off
“walk around for block” for 2016.
One of the highlights last year during our travels around the block was the “neighborhood garage sales” that we were able
to stop at and look around. We also took advantage of the nice days we had with going outside watching the age to age children
running around playing and laughing during their recess time. The residents enjoyed stopping by to say hello.
We also talked about the start of the Major League Baseball season beginning. And, of course that brought up the 2015
World Series Champions the Kansas City Royals. You would be amazed to see how many Royal fans we have here at Windsor
Place. We are looking forward to watching them on TV or listening to them on the radio. The residents will be cheering them
on and looking for a repeat of last year’s season.
We spent time reminiscing about yard work. The residents remembered tilling the grounds and planting soil for the family
vegetable garden. Pulling weeds and helping mom plant flowers in her flower bed. They talked about how beautiful the flowers
made the yard look. Some of the disliked chores were mowing the grass, trimming the bushes, and raking and bagging up the
leaves. After all that hard work they looked forward to a tall glass of cold fresh hand squeezed lemonade. Also, they remember
making sun tea setting it out all day long and drinking it during their supper meal.
Other activities that are planned throughout the month are weekly van rides, going to watch some local baseball games,
and the most exciting thing is riding around town on the Coffeyville Shuttle Bus. The residents will be waving at their many
friends throughout the city.

The Road We Travel

May is a month for Mothers, Memorials and graduations. At Windsor Place, we will be celebrating all three of these. We
will because these have been such a part of the lives of the persons we serve. So we will honor them by keeping these events
alive for them to enjoy.
On May 12th, we will host our eighth kindergarten graduation. We will be celebrating what has been, simply, a remarkable
year of daily interaction and learning between young minds and young-at-hearts. It will be the culmination of our eighth year
of Age to Age Learning.
In January 2007, when this project was first discussed, we knew it would be something quite special. However, during the
following 18 months, as the project was assembled and details addressed, our expectations were raised even higher. We knew
what could occur. We could see it coming. But, even after 8 years of operation, the excitement is new every day.
I report to you now, on behalf of persons who live at Windsor Place, that our expectations were absolutely exceeded. With
6-7 daily opportunities for interaction between the students and the elders, relationships grow and deepen. Encouragement,
affirmation and support from the elders makes learning fun and enjoyable. And, boy, have they learned! Some days it is magical
to behold.
What do they learn, you ask? These young minds learn...everyone is someone...smiles and hugs are balm for the spirit...
sowing kindness to others feels good inside...sometimes laps are better than chairs...grandma’s and grandpa’s exercise harder
when they are being watched by their special young friends...grandma and grandpa make them feel special...to name a few.
And, by the way, they learned to read and write and do numbers along the way!
The kindergarten has been everything we had hoped for and more.
It remains our hope that other committed communities will replicate their own versions of this program for the betterment
of young minds and those young at heart.
Mother’s Day, which goes back to 1908, is to honor our mothers. Our mothers sacrafice so much for us. They are the
center of our families. They certainly deserve our love and affirmation every day, not just on the “second Sunday in May”. We
love mothers here!
Memorial Day, formerly Decoration Day, dates back to the 1860’s where those who had died in military service were
remembered by having the grave sites decorated with flowers and flags. It has evolved to include all who have died. Those who
provided our family foundations, spiritual teachings and the communities in which we live and enjoy. Take time on May 30th
to go to a cemetary and visit the grave of someone who contributed so much to you.
In closing, I hope your Mother’s Day, Memorial Day and the graduations you attend this month will bring you a deeper
sense of joy and happiness. I know ours here will.

Age-to-Age

Most of the days in April were occupied by Age-to-Age students and Windsor Grandmas and Grandpas preparing for the
end of the school year program. Students and Elders spent hors making decorations during art intergenerational programming.
Music and songs were also practiced throughout the month. New songs as well as old favorites of the grandmas and Grandpas
were explored.
A few days were dedicated to making May baskets and flowers during intergenerational time. The students will be delivering their creations on May 2.
Fun with drums and music proved to be a new fun intergenerational project. Both the young and the Elders found they
had rhythm.
Grandmas and Grandpas joined the children in the classroom during flex groups on April 20th to celebrate Earth Day.
Discussions on how to take care of the earth were numerous and interesting as well as the Earth Day Stations. We recycled our
milk cartons by making vehicles out of them, teamed up to complete puzzles, stamped and read books, made trash gobblers and
planted grass for our hairy heads. The “hairy heads” will be getting a haircut soon.
Although it’s hard to fathom we will soon be preparing for a new school year, Kindergarten Round-up was held on April
14th at Community Elementary. Windsor Place and the Age-to-Age classroom hosted an Open House for prospective students
for the 2016-2017 school year on Monday, April 25th.
Our hearts are heavy as we envision saying good-bye to this year’s class but are looking forward to celebrating the accomplishments of our present class on May 12th.

Resident of the Month

We had a wonderful April family party. The residents, their families and friends were entertained by Becky Griffiths and
her friend Faye on violins. We had a fantastic salad bar with cinnamon rolls for dessert. Our spring décor, bird houses and
blooming tree branches looked beautiful on our pink, blue and green tablecloths.
The van ride to and from Jack’s Place in Liberty for our monthly Red Hats lunch was very boisterous! Everyone had a
ball laughing and singing as we were traveling. Listening to their conversations about things they remembered doing in their
younger days, the camaraderie of these fun loving people and hearing their sweet voices raised in song, blessed my heart because
of the happiness and contentment of each one. It was a day to remember.
The Tyro Christian School 2nd and 3rd graders last day to be with us this school year was a sweet one, literally! We made
Polar Bear Ice Cream in baggies. There was lots of laughing and shaking, shaking, shaking. Enjoying this treat with them was
a great way to say goodbye to our special little friends. We will miss them this summer!
We enjoyed our outing to watch the Tot Olympics at CCC Nellis Hall. It was great seeing these special children participating in many events. The fun, smiles and cheering from the college student volunteers as they helped these children take
part in these events planned for them. The Red Raven mascot also cheered them on with lots of hugs and high fives. Sylvester
Williams, former CCC football player and nose guard for the Denver Broncos, the 2016 Super Bowl champs, gave lots of hugs
and posed for pictures with children, staff and residents. He did a great job passing out awards to the children!
We enjoyed shopping at the Country Time Flea Market. Everyone enjoyed lots of reminiscing and visiting about antiques
and items for sale that they used to have in their own homes. Big smiles adorned each face as they showed each other their
purchases. We love going, seeing, enjoying, reminiscing and eating out which we will be doing as often as possible! Please

Carolyn Pope

The resident of the month of May 2016 is Carolyn Pope.
Carolyn was born on Sunday March 23, 1941 to her parents Bud and Ruby
Kaufman. She has seven siblings; six sisters; Joy, June, Fern, Dorothy, Genevieve
and Ruth and one Brother, Clark.
Carolyn attended elementary school and graduated from Field Kindley High
School in Coffeyville, Kansas. Carolyn married John Pope on March 23, 1967 in
Miami, Oklahoma. It’s apparent that Carolyn values a large family as she raised one
daughter, Becky, and four sons, Danny, Tony, Randy and Rick. She has six grandchildren and four great-grand-children.
Carolyn kept busy by working for a home health service for the Coffeyville
area. She is a member of SOS and Women’s Circle of the First Baptist Church. She
has several hobbies that include playing bingo, planting flowers and spending time
with her family and friends. Her biggest passion is her love for snowmen. She has
been collecting snowmen for a very long time and her collection is now greater than
a thousand!

like to see them fight over the ball
and I like the action.

I played it as a kid. I played
basketball all four years of high
school.
Lucille Miesner..................My favorite is baseball, mainly
because I know exactly what is
going on.
Teresa Angell..................... I like volleyball, especially in
the summertime because you can
play it indoors or outdoors.
Pat Powers......................... Tennis because I enjoy watching
them play.
Carolyn Pope..................... Basketball because I was good at
it when I played.
Maxine Pevehouse.............I never did it but skating is my favorite sport and I like to watch it.
Diane Jones........................Football is my favorite sport. I
like watching it.
Louise Merchant............... Baseball I remember my dads
favorite team was the Cardinals,
we would always listen to game
on the radio. That was our time.

The Road We Travel

May is a month for Mothers, Memorials and graduations. At Windsor Place, we will be celebrating all three of these. We
will because these have been such a part of the lives of the persons we serve. So we will honor them by keeping these events
alive for them to enjoy.
On May 12th, we will host our eighth kindergarten graduation. We will be celebrating what has been, simply, a remarkable
year of daily interaction and learning between young minds and young-at-hearts. It will be the culmination of our eighth year
of Age to Age Learning.
In January 2007, when this project was first discussed, we knew it would be something quite special. However, during the
following 18 months, as the project was assembled and details addressed, our expectations were raised even higher. We knew
what could occur. We could see it coming. But, even after 8 years of operation, the excitement is new every day.
I report to you now, on behalf of persons who live at Windsor Place, that our expectations were absolutely exceeded. With
6-7 daily opportunities for interaction between the students and the elders, relationships grow and deepen. Encouragement,
affirmation and support from the elders makes learning fun and enjoyable. And, boy, have they learned! Some days it is magical
to behold.
What do they learn, you ask? These young minds learn...everyone is someone...smiles and hugs are balm for the spirit...
sowing kindness to others feels good inside...sometimes laps are better than chairs...grandma’s and grandpa’s exercise harder
when they are being watched by their special young friends...grandma and grandpa make them feel special...to name a few.
And, by the way, they learned to read and write and do numbers along the way!
The kindergarten has been everything we had hoped for and more.
It remains our hope that other committed communities will replicate their own versions of this program for the betterment
of young minds and those young at heart.
Mother’s Day, which goes back to 1908, is to honor our mothers. Our mothers sacrafice so much for us. They are the
center of our families. They certainly deserve our love and affirmation every day, not just on the “second Sunday in May”. We
love mothers here!
Memorial Day, formerly Decoration Day, dates back to the 1860’s where those who had died in military service were
remembered by having the grave sites decorated with flowers and flags. It has evolved to include all who have died. Those who
provided our family foundations, spiritual teachings and the communities in which we live and enjoy. Take time on May 30th
to go to a cemetary and visit the grave of someone who contributed so much to you.
In closing, I hope your Mother’s Day, Memorial Day and the graduations you attend this month will bring you a deeper
sense of joy and happiness. I know ours here will.

The month of April was the start of some fun outdoor activities. Beginning with our resident’s first walk or being wheeled
around the block of the season. Thank you staff members and the Coffeyville Community College nursing that helped kick off
“walk around for block” for 2016.
One of the highlights last year during our travels around the block was the “neighborhood garage sales” that we were able
to stop at and look around. We also took advantage of the nice days we had with going outside watching the age to age children
running around playing and laughing during their recess time. The residents enjoyed stopping by to say hello.
We also talked about the start of the Major League Baseball season beginning. And, of course that brought up the 2015
World Series Champions the Kansas City Royals. You would be amazed to see how many Royal fans we have here at Windsor
Place. We are looking forward to watching them on TV or listening to them on the radio. The residents will be cheering them
on and looking for a repeat of last year’s season.
We spent time reminiscing about yard work. The residents remembered tilling the grounds and planting soil for the family
vegetable garden. Pulling weeds and helping mom plant flowers in her flower bed. They talked about how beautiful the flowers
made the yard look. Some of the disliked chores were mowing the grass, trimming the bushes, and raking and bagging up the
leaves. After all that hard work they looked forward to a tall glass of cold fresh hand squeezed lemonade. Also, they remember
making sun tea setting it out all day long and drinking it during their supper meal.
Other activities that are planned throughout the month are weekly van rides, going to watch some local baseball games,
and the most exciting thing is riding around town on the Coffeyville Shuttle Bus. The residents will be waving at their many
friends throughout the city.
