Un autre regard sur Paléo
Un autre regard sur Paléo Musée de l’Elysée / Paléo Festival Nyon Exhibition on the Asse plain from July 20 to 26, 2015 The Musée de l’Elysée at Paléo Festival Nyon Un autre regard sur Paléo: an exceptional collaboration between the Musée de l’Elysée and Paléo Festival Nyon. In 2015, the Musée de l’Elysée is celebrating its 30th anniversary and Paléo Festival Nyon its 40th edition. The two French-speaking swiss institutions are joining forces to mount an ambitious and unique photographic project, piloted by the Musée de l’Elysée. Five photographers have been commissioned by the museum and given carte blanche to take a new look at the Festival. Their work, shot during the 2014 edition of the festival, will be presented from 20 to 26 July 2015 at Paléo in an exhibition mounted in a space specifically conceived for the occasion. "This project is a reflection of the Musée de l’Elysée’s ambition in this anniversary year: create a resonance for a new audience around an innovative artistic content of quality, at the crossroads of two quite different professional environments", emphasizes Tatyana Franck, who has just taken up her post as the institution’s new director. Claude Baechtold, Anne Golaz, Nicolas Haeni, Olivier Christinat and Elisa Larvego, have all contributed their offbeat and surprising views of the Festival. Each of the photographers proposes an original vision of Paléo. Between immersion and enquiry, the photographers go beyond the confines of mere reporting in order to offer us a singular point of view from the margins of the Festival, but which is fully revealing of the energy of the event. Daniel Rossellat, president of Paléo Festival, adds: "By calling on the Musée de l’Elysée, we wanted to offer our festivalgoers another cultural dimension, the chance to live an intense photographic experience in the context of the Festival and open Paléo to other ways of seeing". Paléo Festival Nyon is today one of Europe’s most important music events. For its fortieth edition, the Festival has programmed events over an entire week, with the added attraction of new projects specially conceived for the occasion. She highlights the role of these shadow workers and propels them to the forefront of the stage for the first time. The photographic work underlines the importance of belonging to a group, for young people who are often going through a transitionary stage in their lives. In order to present a complete documentary work, the photographer embedded herself in a team and shared the life of the "roadies", even sleeping in a hammock under the stage. Anne Golaz was born in Switzerland in 1983. After obtaining her diploma from the Centre for vocational training in Vevey, she continued her research with a Master at TAIK, the University of Art and Design in Helsinki. Her work deals essentially with the representation of the rural world, links with wild nature and animals. She was among the photographers selected by the Musée de l’Elysée for the exhibition and publication reGeneration2. • Elisa Larvego, In the Field The photographer pointed her lens at the campsite, the place where "eveyrything is allowed". Elisa Larvego reveals its ephemeral living structures, photographing open-air private life. Her body of work contains several image typologies: portraits, structures, living spaces, lost and found objects. This work bears the mark of great sensitivity to colour and manages to transform the forms of our daily life into quasi sculptural objects. Born in 1984 in Switzerland, Elisa Larvega lives and works in Geneva. She trained in photography at the Centre d’enseignement professionnel in Vevey and obtained a diploma in Visual Arts at the High School of Art and Design (HEAD) in Geneva. She has won numerous awards including the Leenaards cultural scholarship, Lausanne. She was also one of the photographers selected by the Musée de l’Elysée for the exhibition and publication reGeneration2. He wanted to document this subject by immersing himself in the Paléo audience in order to capture the various groups that make up the Festival crowd, as they share intimate moments, or caught up in mass movements or whilst relaxing. His photographic work is made up of very rich images, which play, in a formal way, with the photographic material. The result is a body of work playing with focus effects of close-ups, that at moments drifts towards abstraction and pictorial representation. Olivier Christinat, born in Lausanne in 1963, trained as a photographer in Vevey and Lausanne. After exhibiting his work on numerous occasions in Switzerland and elsewhere in Europe, he has been exploring the different technical possibilities available to his photographic art. • Nicolas Haeni, The Paléo Diet The photographer decided to take an interest in a very important facet of Paléo life the food. For during the Festival, spectators have access to numerous food stalls representing a multitude of culinary traditions. The rich variety of dishes on offer reflects the diversity of musical genres on the Festival’s programme. The theme of food and its field of application are the starting point of this delicious photo inquiry. By observing the places where food is stored, prepared and consumed, Nicolas Heani has produced a corpus of very varied images, from portrait to still life. His photographs, which play with colours and very hard-hitting effects, are situated at the crossroads between dramatisation and field research. Nicolas Haeni, born in Switzerland in 1984, lives and works in Versoix. After studying history and German at the University of Geneva, he took a Bachelor’s degree in Visual Communication, photographic section, at the Cantonal School of Art in Lausanne (ECAL) before pursuing his studies with a Master’s degree in Art Direction at the ECAL between 2009-2011. To mark the 40th edition of the Festival he has directed a photographic film, of which the source of historical inspiration is Ulysses, who dreams of coming home after a journey lasting 40 years. As he stands face to face with the inhabitants of Paléopolis –in reality, the festivalgoers– the protagonist finds himself transported to a strange and unsettling universe. Claude Baechtold was born in Lausanne, in 1972. After studying graphic design at the Cantonal School or Art in Lausanne, he opened his own design office in Lausanne. With a number of other photagraphers and journalists, he participated in the creation of Riverboom editions. Since its creation, the Festival has undergone steady, managed growth, including a process of professionalization and other developments. Every year, the Festival is host to 250 concerts and shows, which make up the offer to the 230,000 spectators roaming across the 84 hectares site on the Asse plain, just above the town of Nyon. As of today, nearly 6 million people have contributed to a popular success that shows no sign of failing. Paléo Festival Nyon is a halfway house between party and concerts, an eclectic event that aims to satisfy the curiosity of the audience and encourage new discoveries. Both a springboard for new young talent and a stage for celebrating artists with international reputations, the Festival has gradually opened up to all styles of music, as well as to circus arts and street theatre. It has also made clear its determination to host and promote other forms of art and culture, including some quite unexpected ones, such as architectural installations, photo exhibitions and sculpture, all of which add to the rich artistic variety of Paléo. Each year, the organisation sets itself the target of reinventing and innovating as well as surprising its audience. In 2015, the Festival is celebrating its 40th edition with an extra day and a variety of projects specially conceived for the occasion. Paléo Festival Nyon is looking forward to a future bright in innovative colours and to broadening its artistic horizons in order to propose to its public a cultural offer whose theme is discovery. The full line-up will be announced at a press conference on Tuesday April 14, 2015.
