The End, or the Beginning?
The End, or the Beginning? T he 2009-2010 school year is rapidly coming to its calendar conclusion. However, the end of the school year is actually the beginning of the next school year. Academic programming, intramural and interscholastic sports scheduling, and social activities are already in the planning stages as we prepare for another new beginning in late August of the 2010-11 school year. The summer months will rapidly fly by and we will be very busy with a myriad of innovations and plans. These innovations and plans will continue helping us make Memorial Boulevard Middle School “A Great Place to Learn” as we prepare to “be the best that we can be”. Additionally, the building will receive a thorough cleaning as it awaits the return of our most valuable asset, our students. Therefore, as we prepare, we also hope that each one of our students will enjoy a wonderful and happy summer. Yet, we want each student to be mindful of the challenges ahead as they begin a new school year. Learning isn’t a ten-month process. We encourage all students to spend some of their vacation time preparing to be as successful as they can be, beginning the very first day of the new school year. Stimulating your mind in creative endeavors and the basic “3R’s” can have tremendous benefits. School successes don’t come accidentally and all of our students should experience the benefits of planned preparation. Have a great summer vacation and always remain safe and healthy. Marci Jones Principal Getting to School on Time www.MyLunchMoney.com As we do each year, we encourage our students NOW THERE’S AN to strive for improved attendance. In the inEASIER WAY TO PAY terest of safety, students are asked to arrive on FOR SCHOOL school grounds no earlier than 7:35. It is at LUNCHES! this time buses are beginning to arrive, and teachers are providing supervision. Students were challenged to raise awareness about an ecological issue affecting the planet by illustrating a paper grocery bag . Students really "thought outside the box" with their creations, as some students added props to make their bags 3-D. Overall, the project allowed students to display their artistic skills while still learning about science. Students and teachers alike were in awe of the many artifacts—the beauty and intricacy of the pieces was incredible! This year, the exhibit included a replica of King Tut’s mummy—fascinating! Thanks to Mrs. Cawley, and Mrs. Hanson, for planning this fabulous educational journey through time. We greatly appreciate their efforts to provide this once-in-alifetime opportunity to extend our learning beyond the classroom. The Green Team has been busy winding up major units of study and is looking forward to a strong finish from our Groovy Greenies. All classes are gearing up for our final common assessments which take place on June 1st, 3st, 8th and 10th. Students have (or will be given) individual review packets which they should be looking at each night in order to prepare. Please help support your children by sending them to school well rested, well fed and motivated to do their personal best on these assessments, as well as for the remainder of the year. The Green Team teachers have had a great year with the Groovy Greenies. We look forward to seeing them in the halls of Memorial Boulevard School as they continue their journey across the threshold of adolescence. We wish all of our families a very restful summer vacation. Wherever you may find yourselves this summer, remember to bring along a good book! YELLOW TEAM Seventh graders on the Yellow Team have been studying potential and kinetic energy as well as simple machines. One of the things they have done is create flip books that depict the Law of Conservation of Energy as applied to skate parks. Sixth graders are studying weather and all of the things that go into predicting it The school year has just about come to an end, and we hope it is just the beginning for many great adventures. As you begin making plans for the summer, we would like to share a few points of interest. Before school ends, you will be given a summer packet for Social Studies. This packet is to be completed during the summer months and returned to the subject teacher in September. One of the first grades students will receive in September will be for this completed packet. Should they misplace the packet during the summer, replacement packets will be available at the Memorial Boulevard Middle School’s main office. Knowing one’s math facts can help ensure a smoother transition to next year’s math class. It is the basis for the math that will be covered all year. Daily review of these facts will increase accuracy and is time well spent. Make or buy decks of cards for multiplication and diviBoulevard Bulletin ♦ June 2010 sion facts (stores such as Staples offer inexpensive decks). Students should go through the deck as quickly as possible, placing incorrect responses back into the deck. Time how long it takes to complete the entire deck. Try to beat previous best times and challenge a friend to do the same. Finally, a great inexpensive way to keep from getting bored is a weekly trip to the library. Our renovated Bristol Public Library has offerings for all ages that are worth checking out. Get a library card, use the computers, check out books, videos, and books on tape, and read the current magazines… all for free! Books listed in the summer packets can be found in the library. The air conditioning on hot summer days will also provide welcome relief. The ability to read is often considered an indicator of future success. The way to improve these skills is through practice. Take advantage of this great opportunity! The very best of wishes for a safe and happy summer. We look forward to seeing you in the fall! PURPLE TEAM Students of the Month: Each month, Purple Team teachers choose four students who serve as a positive role model for all. These students exemplify excellent character as well as demonstrate their best effort in all of their classes. Students are treated to a special lunch by the Purple Team teachers and given a certificate of achievement. They are also given unlimited lavatory, locker and drink privileges in all of their core classes for the whole school year. Their pictures are proudly displayed on a bulletin board in our Purple Team hallway. The students of the month for April were: Gabby Salls, Azumii Freeman, Hannah Kay, Gary Hoxha, Karen Litwinzyk, and Nicole Tabak. CONGRATULATIONS on a job well done! News: Hayley McCarron and Kaitlyn France wrote poems that were selected for publication in the annual student anthology Award Winning Young Writers of America - 2010. RED TEAM Eighth grade students participated in the annual “Memorial Walk” on Friday, May 28th. The students were divided into groups to tour the boulevard, for which our school was named, visit Downs Street Historical Cemetery, and answer questions regarding the monuments. May 27th was 8th Grade Day—a fun-filled field trip to Lake Compounce. Also planned for eighth graders: the 8th Grade Dance. This will be held the night before commencement. Students can buy tickets starting in June for the Tuesday, June 15th event. The promotion ceremony is Wednesday, June 16th. Wow, where did the year go? (Continued on page 11) Page 10 MORE TEAM NEWS (Continued from page 10) Finally, the Red team would like wish Mr Krampitz a healthy, happy retirement. In his 35 years of teaching and coaching, he has inspired, entertained, and instructed thousands of students. The teachers he is leaving behind will sadly miss him, as well as the students who will never have the opportunity to enjoy his Social Studies class. BEST OF EVERYTHING TO YA MR. K!!! BLUE TEAM History (8th grade): In U.S. History, the classes are completing the Civil War unit. Our curriculum covered Exploration through to Reconstruction. Our final common assessment will be on Wednesday, June 9th. The students will be prepared and will hopefully try their best. Study hard! There has been a large amount of information learned throughout the year and the students have done a remarkable job. Good luck next year! Geography (7th grade): In Geography, the students will work in cooperative groups and study Africa’s culture, geography, and world issues during the months of May and June. Our final common assessment will be on Thursday, June 3trd. The students will be prepared and will hopefully try their best. Study hard! There has been a large amount of information learned throughout the year and the students have done a remarkable job. Good luck next year! Language Arts: Mr. Glowa's and Mrs. Brickett's Language Arts classes are currently engaged in a unit on Figurative Language. Students are analyzing poems and short stories to determine how an author's use of figurative language conveys meaning (theme) and enhances understanding of character and conflict. Blue Team teachers would like to wish students "Good Luck" in high school. We are confident students will do well. “YOU” I don’t need you to make me happy. But I’m happy if you come along. I don’t need you to hear the music. But we sing in harmony in each other’s song. You don’t fill my heart or my soul. But there’s an emptiness without you. I don’t need you. But I want everything about you. Daniella Dutkiewicz Boulevard Bulletin ♦ June 2010 Page 11 OLYMPIC STANDINGS BRISTOL BITS WAY TO GO, MS. PARADIS!
