Small and medium-sized enterprises represent almost 95% of the Kingdom’s businesses, and employ the majority of the country’s workforce. According to the Ministry of Labour, the private sector contribution to Gross Domestic Product (GDP) is currently 57.4 per cent. The sector’s rate of annual growth over the past five years was 5.5 per cent, just below its targeted rate of 5.7 per cent. Recently, the Government injected more than US$8 billion in capital into Government funds that provide loans, enabling Saudis to set up businesses. Why attend? By the end of this year, the Kingdom intends to join the list of the top ten most competitive nations in the world – a coveted position that relies on a vibrant economy driven by a new generation of creative and forward-looking entrepreneurs. The Saudi Fast Growth 100 is a new national program designed to promote entrepreneurship and innovation, ranking the fastest-growing companies in the Kingdom according to their revenues. Over 70 percent of the Saudi Fast Growth CEOs are serial entrepreneurs who have founded other companies, the majority of which are still in business. These “high intensity entrepreneurs” exceed the U.S. Inc. 500 for their rate of new business formation.
