This bibliography provides a selected list of books by and/or about African Americans. This booklist includes works of fiction and nonfiction for adults, children and young adults reviewed and recommended by librarians of the Detroit Public Library. The African American Booklist began as a way to commemorate Black History Month and since that time has continued to feature the accomplishments of African Americans in the literary world. The booklist is an annual tradition in our community and continues to be a highly anticipated publication for book lovers nationwide. This year’s booklist theme honors one of the Detroit Public Library’s own, the late Clara Stanton Jones. As a former director of the library, Mrs. Jones was an innovative national leader throughout her career. The African American Booklist salutes the rich legacy of Mrs. Clara Stanton Jones for her service and countless contributions to the Detroit Public Library. Sing a song full of the faith that the dark past has taught us, Sing a song full of the hope that the present has brought us, Facing the rising sun of our new day begun Let us march on till victory is won. Stony the road we trod, Bitter the chastening rod, Felt in the days when hope unborn had died; Yet with a steady beat, Have not our weary feet Come to the place for which our fathers sighed? We have come over a way that with tears has been watered, We have come, treading our path through the blood of the slaughtered, Out from the gloomy past, Till now we stand at last Where the white gleam of our bright star is cast. God of our weary years, God of our silent tears, Thou who has brought us thus far on the way; Thou who has by Thy might Led us into the light, Keep us forever in the path, we pray. Lest our feet stray from the places, our God, where we met Thee, Lest, our hearts drunk with the wine of the world, we forget Thee; Shadowed beneath Thy hand, May we forever stand. True to our God, True to our native land. 4 | 2013 African American History Booklist Letter From Executive Director “…any adversaries of the Detroit Public Library, civil rights or her family who tangled with her found themselves outmatched.” - Clara Stanton Jones’ Family (October 20, 2012) The Detroit Public Library (DPL) proudly embraces the life and legacy of Clara Stanton Jones as part of its long history of service to citizens of Detroit. Her death on September 30, 2012 at age 99 provided an opportunity to reflect upon her role at DPL and in the library profession. Mrs. Jones’ distinguished 34-year career at DPL culminated in serving as the library’s director from 1970 – 1978. She was the first African-American to lead a major urban library system and she was DPL’s first female director. In 1976, while serving as Director, she was elected as the first African-American president of the American Library Association. Although these “firsts” are undoubtedly significant they do not capture the depth and scope of Mrs. Jones’ influence in shaping a new and compelling vision of library service to the citizens of Detroit. Nor do these “firsts” reflect her influence as a mentor and inspiration to librarians at DPL and throughout the nation. These “firsts” do not convey the grace, focus and determination she consistently displayed whenever her character, competence and credentials were challenged. I had the pleasure of meeting Mrs. Jones when she visited Baltimore’s Enoch Pratt Free Library. She talked about DPL’s TIP, The Information Place, an innovative community information and referral service and the opportunity for the Pratt Library to replicate the concept. She was knowledgeable, insightful, and enthusiastic. My colleagues and I were impressed by her warmth and generosity. Meeting Mrs. Jones was one of the highlights of my library career. DPL is pleased to honor Mrs. Jones’ memory in this 2013 edition of the Detroit Public Library’s African American Booklist. She was a tireless advocate for literacy, adequate funding for public libraries, as well as a pioneer for the concept of community information and referral service. Clara Stanton Jones will be forever remembered for her role in the library profession and in the history of the Detroit Public Library. Jo Anne G. Mondowney Executive Director www.detroitpubliclibrary.org | 5 The Life and Legacy of Mrs. Clara Stanton Jones* Committee’s recommendation to the ALA Executive Board that the resolution be rescinded. • Clara founded the community referral system called TIP (The Information Place), while she was Director at the Detroit Public Library. TIP was replicated in libraries throughout the country. The system helped people get in touch with agencies and community resources. • In 1984, Clara founded a Black women’s dialogue group, Black Women Stirring the Waters, where the special perspectives of black women were explored in a full range of fields. In 1997 because of their concern about the media’s failure to provide realistic images of black women in all their diversity, the group published a book of 46 members’ vignettes on their lives as a legacy to be passed on. • President Jimmy Carter appointed Clara as Commissioner to the National Commission on Libraries and Information Science in 1978. She served this post until 1982. • She received the Trailblazer Award in 1990 from the Black Caucus of the ALA (American Library Association), the highest award given by BCALA. The award recognizes individuals whose pioneering contributions have been outstanding and unique, and whose efforts have “blazed a trail” in the profession. • In 1975, Clara received The University of Michigan Athena Award, the highest award for an outstanding graduate for Humanitarian Service. 1913-2012 C lara Araminta Stanton, born on May 14, 1913, grew up in St Louis, Missouri where like many young professional women of her day, she planned to become an elementary school teacher. She attended Milwaukee State Teachers College (MSTC) for one year, where she was one of only six black students in the school. She later changed her mind about teaching and transferred to Spelman College in Atlanta. Ironically, while in Atlanta she was unable to use the public library since it was segregated at the time, but through these life experiences, she never lost her love of reading and her tireless work ethic. Clara often stated that through her love of books, she was taken to distant lands and unique places that truly fascinated her. Throughout her life journey, it was her experiences that helped her to develop her vivid imagination and zest for life. While working at the Atlanta University library to save money for graduate school, Clara met and often had lunch with W.E.B. Dubois who guided her reading and who inspired her to reach beyond the ordinary. She also met her future husband of 70 years at the library, Albert DeWitt Jones, who was doing graduate work at Atlanta University at the time. After she completed her undergraduate studies in 1934, two years later she went north to the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor to earn her degree in Library Science. Clara and Albert later married on June 25, 1938 after she completed her graduate work at the University of Michigan. Clara then moved to New Orleans for several years where she worked in the library at Dillard and Southern Universities, but then moved to Detroit in 1944 when she accepted a job as librarian in the Detroit Public Library system. Clara’s library career culminated in her being appointed the first Black person to head a major public library system (Detroit), the first to be elected as President of the American Library Association and the first person to be named visiting Regents Scholar in Library Science at the University of California, Berkeley. Clara Stanton Jones retired and moved from Detroit to Oakland, California in 1978. Other notable highlights of Clara’s career included: • She advocated and won the passing of the “Resolution on Racism and Sexism Awareness” in 1977 despite the ALA’s Intellectual Freedom 6 | 2013 African American History Booklist For her pioneering work in urban libraries promoting them as a tool for all, the people’s university, she was awarded honorary doctorate degrees at her beloved Spelman, the University of Michigan and scores of other colleges and universities across the country. She was so soft, yet so strong. She loved life and she loved people. However, any adversaries of the Detroit Public Library, civil rights or her family who tangled with her found themselves outmatched. With her active career and busy schedule, she always made her family, friends and staff feel that they were the most important people in the world to her. Clara Stanton Jones will be forever in our hearts here at the Detroit Public Library. Her legacy is a beautiful life well lived and a historic career forever documented --- she was truly the epitome of what it means to be a renaissance woman. * As excerpted from the Obituary (October 20, 2012) www.detroitpubliclibrary.org | 7 ADULT TOP TEN ADULT BOOKS Inspirational Fiction Lewis, Sherri L.
