Parents want their children to be safe, healthy and learn values. Kids want to have fun and make new friends. Teens want to be the first in their family to go to college. Adults, children and seniors want to lead healthier lives. This is the beauty of the Y. We are so much more than you think. From exercise to education, from preschool to preventative health, from swimming to scholarships, the Y doesn’t just strengthen our bodies; we strengthen our community. Bob Murrin Chairman, Board of Directors YMCA of Greater Long Beach This year’s annual report was created to address what you might not know about the Y. In the following pages, you’ll learn about the Y’s broad impact on the community in our ‘so much more than numbers’ section and hear the stories of those whose lives have directly improved as a result of being part of the Y. On behalf of everyone at the Y, we want to say thank you for being part of our community. Alfredo Velasco President & CEO YMCA of Greater Long Beach So Much More 3,410 donors have supported our Y through financial contributions 6,779 campers made lasting friendships, memories and developed values 163,054 is the number of visits individuals made to our three health & wellness centers to get healthy Than Numbers 3,605 children learned to swim 1,736 youth were able to participate in our programs because of financial assistance 437 business leaders, community advocates, parents, teens and individuals who want to give back and support their neighbors, volunteer at the Y So Much More Than a Day Camp: Los Altos Provides a Rich Experience Summer day camp is an opportunity for kids to have fun, learn values, build self esteem, gain a mentor and have life changing experiences they will carry with them for a lifetime! Last summer, Angela was a single mom struggling to find more work to support her family. She came to the Y desperate to find a safe place for her daughter, Genesis, during the day. Thanks to the Y’s financial assistance program made possible by our generous donors, we were able to support Angela and Genesis by getting Genesis enrolled in our day camp program. “[The Y] didn’t just help me with the fees through their financial assistance program, Genesis had a fantastic time during the summer in many different activities, she even learned to swim! We will definitely be back next summer and when she is old enough she will definitely volunteer and give back to the Y that was and is such a great support to our family. Thank You!” Genesis is back for another fun-filled summer at the Y. With greater service also comes greater need and thanks to people like you who supported our Annual Campaign, we are able to welcome Genesis and others who have financial challenges with open arms. You are part of the miracles being made in the lives of our Y kids! Thank you for your support! Genesis, YMCA Day Camp participant Lorena Retano is going to UC Santa Barbara to study Biology in 2015. So Much More Than an Afterschool Program: Youth Institute Helps Promising Teen Find Academic Path Over 6 years ago, Lorena Retano was a little girl attending the Y-WRAP after school program when her mother enrolled her in the Youth Institute at Stephen’s Middle School. As a board member of the Community Development branch, her mother knew the impact that the YMCA would have on her children. Following in her brother’s footsteps, Lorena bonded to the program and attended throughout her high school career. Growing up in the Willmore City/Drake Park Historic District, Lorena didn’t connect with the crime and violence that plagues the area and instead stayed inside to focus on her studies and improve her character. As a recent high school graduate, Lorena looks back at her time in the YMCA Youth Institute with fond memories, most notably the fun and freedom that came with making short films with her friends at Stephens Middle School. She credits the Youth Institute for providing a positive place to learn and grow socially and emotionally. As a self starter and highly motivated individual, Lorena says that her drive to succeed was nurtured in the Youth Institute alumni program. She says that the bar is set even higher when you are expected to be a leader to the new class, and she found herself rising to the occasion regularly. The digital media skills she learned during her time in the program have served her well in recent years. Working with Change Agent Productions, she used those skills to work as an intern in Las Vegas and San Diego. She also says that the skills bestowed by the Y gave her the tools to go above and beyond in her classwork. Lorena graduated with honors at nearly the top of her class with a 4.11 GPA. Lorena was accepted into every college she applied to and is slated to enroll this fall at UC Santa Barbara to study Biology. THANK YOU TO OUR DONORS At the Y, we do great things every day. We spark curiosity, we ignite a love of learning and we transform lives through health and wellness - every single day. And we couldn’t do it without your support.
