From the UDC President
Linda Lindic
I
t’s hard to believe that when you read this message, it will be the end of the year and we will be looking
forward to 2016. Time is going by so quickly ... too quickly for me as your president!
The UDC IPO Fall Classic held in conjunction with the DPCA National is over, and your Board of Directors
is working hard on the 2016 United Doberman Club National which will be held in Medina, Ohio, only
40 minutes from downtown Cleveland. This will be a UDC national that should not be missed.
As a native of Cleveland, I know how much this city has much to offer, and hope that when you
come to the 2016 UDC National you schedule a little extra time to experience the many sights and
attractions of Cleveland.
The city is sprucing up and getting ready for the 2016 Republican National Convention in July, 2016.
Here are just a few of the things Cleveland has to offer visitors:
• Rock & Roll Hall of Fame • Playhouse Square • Cleveland Science Center • Crawford Auto Aviation Museum
• Cleveland Orchestra. One of the best in the world. • Cleveland Museum of Art. One of the nation’s best art museums.
• Cleveland Botanical Garden. Explore the glass house and exotic plants! • World-class restaurants!
Go to www.thisiscleveland.com/things-to-do and order your visitor’s guide today to plan an exciting trip to the 2016 UDC
National … a great experience for you and your dog. Officers

25th Anniversary Recap
by Chris Rasmussen
T
he 25th Anniversary of the UDC
national was held in Winchester,
Ky., from April 14 through 19,
2015. Winchester is a town with
rolling bluegrass fields and huge horse
breeding and training farms. Kentucky
is also home to many bourbon distilleries;
hence, our logo featuring blue skies, an
oak barrel and a bottle of bourbon sporting a custom 25th
Anniversary UDC National label with beautiful doberman
heads flanking the upper corners of the label.
The first part of the week took place at the Clark County
Fairgrounds. We had the use of a building for our meeting and
banquet space, and we had access to several covered arenas
generally used for livestock shows. The weather was not in
our favor at the beginning of the week — the rain was just
pouring down and had been for several days, making even
the covered areas muddy and slick.
The Temperament Tests were run outside in the largest area
in the morning, judged by Ms. Nazarene Mondello.
By that afternoon, the wind and rain together had us
pleading to the fairgrounds manager to let us use the building
for the afternoon conformation show. We were thrilled to
have that option at the last minute, and all participants
helped move tables and chairs to create an impromptu ring
indoors. The first conformation show had about 40 entries,
and was judged by Dr. James Edwards. Dr. Edwards is not new
to UDC conformation, having judged for a regional event
several years ago for the Working Dobermanns of the
Carolinas. We enjoyed his critiques and helpful comments,
and we finished up the day nice and dry.
Wednesday morning found the rain was still lingering, so
the obedience trial was held under cover of one of the pavilions.

We had one of the best turnouts for
obedience trials in the history of the
UDC national, with 15 competitors in
each trial! One of the south’s favorite
AKC obedience judges, Victoria Brown,
had flown in from Virginia the prior
day and, as always, she was quick to
smile and was very fair in her scores.
The second conformation show, also with about 40 entries,
was judged after obedience by Nancy Christensen. With the
weather finally relenting some, we were able to continue
outside. The livestock pavilions were set up perfectly for
running a show. At the end of the ring was an elevated stand,
complete with electrical outlets — it was perfect for setting up
our portable speaker system and allowing the show paperwork
to be done easily and effectively as the conformation show
progressed. We felt truly lucky to have such a great set up for
our conformation shows. Judge Nancy Christensen was one of
the founding members of the UDC. How lucky we were to
have her for our 25th Anniversary event!
Thursday’s events included the Breed Survey with four
entries, judged by another of our founding members, Ray
Carlisle. Thursday also saw our second obedience trial, again
judged by Victoria Brown.
During the day on Thursday, scheduled practice times for
IPO were being held at Dragonsmeade Morgan Horse Farm,
the site for all phases of the IPO trial. The national helpers
were available to work competitors’ dogs. Each competitor
was given 15 minutes for obedience and 15 minutes for
protection practice on the trial field, which for a nationallevel IPO trial is a good amount of time. All the competitors
were very respectful of each other’s time slots, and practice
went very smoothly.

The banquet and IPO draw was
held at the fairgrounds in the
Expo building. We were able to
bring our own wine and beer,
which was a very nice perk of our
location. The food was catered
by the same folks who provided
lunch during the week, and
the food and service were both
excellent. We had tables set up
with items donated for the silent
auction. Everything from dog
beds to leashes to baskets of dog
goodies to VWD DNA tests that
were donated and auctioned off.
As usual, there was a fair amount
of people lurking around the
items they wanted to be the
highest bidder on, and there was
some fierce bidding on several

items. This year, we offered the
ability to pay using credit cards
via Square, so that was a huge boost to the bidding activity
when folks realized they didn’t need cash or a checkbook!
Many, many thanks to all who participated by either donating
or bidding or both. A great time was had by all!
After the SAR presentation, the IPO draw took place. With
10 IPO entries and five BH entries, we had the largest IPO field
to date at a UDC national.
Friday morning, tracking started at Dragonsmeade Morgan
Horse Farm. Acres and acres of bluegrass fields were available
14
for tracking, and the weather was gorgeous.
Mid-calf level, thick green grass provided
the best tracking conditions in the United
States in April! We were so lucky! Due to
the monsoon weather earlier in the week,
we did have a fair amount of walking to
get to the fields from where we could park
our vehicles. Our judge, Carla Griffith, was
such a good sport working with our track
layers, Ray Jeffers and Darren Sims. We’re
sure that more than once Ms. Griffith
had a few thoughts about how it might
have been nice to see a golf
cart out there, but really,
even 4WD golf carts might
have gotten stuck in the
mud as well.
Friday afternoon we were
back at the trial field with
BHs. We had several folks
who were trying for their
first BH ever, so they had to
take the BH written exam
first. The crowd cheered
the BH exhibitors for their
efforts, and several were
rewarded with new BHs!
Saturday morning we
started IPO obedience
followed by protection.
An intense battle for high
IPO 3 had the crowd glued
to the sidelines, watching
every move of every dog. Our judge seemed to have as great
a time judging as our spectators had watching. Ms. Griffith
was always smiling, always friendly.
Of special note: The trophies throughout the week and at
the IPO trial were definitely something to write home about.
Pieces of either silverplate or crystal, engraved with the UDC
logo and the 25th Anniversary emblem, were befitting of such
a high-quality national experience. The below photo shows
just a fraction of all the beautiful awards that were given. Pompuschk finished his UDC Championship
in style, going Reserve Winners Dog in
April at the UDC National in Kentucky.
Pompuschk was High in Trial at the
2015 DPCA Regional Obedience Trial,
scoring 197.5 from Novice B.

Some of the many awards given at national.
T
his was the first obedience trial held under the new UDC
obedience regulations. Jump heights were lowered and
the rules updated to reflect rules of other organizations,
including AKC. Also, a new titling class was added: Beginner
Novice. This class is a good way to start a Doberman in
obedience since the majority of the class is done on lead.
We had our largest obedience entry yet! There were 15
dogs were entered in each trial: 10 in Novice B, three in
Beginner Novice B and two in Beginner Novice A.
The trials were held on the mornings of April 15 and April
16. The weather was dreary, especially on April 15, but the
show was held in a covered and fenced pavilion. It was easy
to watch the dogs, and the footing was good. Although the
pavilion was for livestock, it hadn’t been used since the
previous fall, and there were no strong “distractions.”
The trophies were outstanding, and the winners were
thrilled. The first day, two dogs showed and qualified in
Beginner Novice A. First place went to Lothlorien’s Avari the
Dark Elf and owner Bunny Lanning with a score of 198 ½.
Three dogs showed and qualified in Beginner Novice B.
Lennox dei Dohse BH and owner Erika Mintess took first place
with a score of 194. Nine dogs showed in Novice B and seven
qualified. First place and High in Trial went to Blue Chip Brick
Road V Enchant IPO1, UDX, OM2 and owner Pam Burns with a
score of 198. Note that the new rules specify that Beginner
Novice scores are not eligible for High in Trial. The new rules
do provide for a special award, Highest Scoring Veteran in
Trial, and that went to CH Chaos vom Koby Haus IPO3, FH2,
AD, CD and owner Loel Turpin with a score of 195.

The next day the
weather was better. Again we had two dogs showing in
Beginner Novice A, with first place going to Lothlorien’s Avari
the Dark Elf and owner Bunny Lanning with a score of 198 ½.
Yes, you read that right, two first places with the exact same
score. There were three dogs in Beginner Novice B, with two
dogs qualifying. This time first place went to CH Navistar’s
Cruise Control IPO2, STPV1A, BSA-E1, NA, NAJ, NF, CA, WAC,
VCX and owner Debbie Hartzel with a score of 199. Nine dogs
showed in Novice B, and seven qualified. Once again, first
place and HIT went to Blue Chip Brick Road V Enchant IPO1,
UDX, OM2 and owner Pam Burns with a score of 198 ½.
Again, Highest Scoring Veteran in Trial went to CH Chaos
vom Koby Haus IPO3, FH2, AD, CD and owner Loel Turpin
with a score of 187.
Our obedience judge, Vicky Brown, did a wonderful job.
What a competent judge and such a pleasant person to
interact with. Thanks to all the UDC members who stepped
in to help when needed; it was greatly appreciated.
Thanks to all of the competitors who entered and exhibited.
It was truly inspiring to see these Dobermans work in the
obedience ring.
I am hopeful that with the addition of the Beginner Novice
Class and the modernization of the obedience regulations that
more clubs will offer UDC Obedience Trials.
Canine Good Citizen Evaluation. I had the pleasure of
testing seven Dobermans and their owners at the national. Big
thanks go to Nazarene Mondello for helping me with the test.
Congratulations to these seven new Doberman Canine Good

here was a full slate of search and rescue activities
offered at the Winchester, Ky., show, including
the presentation of the Service Dog of the Year.
Wendy Ewing’s partner, Billy, was presented the award
at the banquet. This charismatic therapy dog showed
his special skills by charming everyone with his loving
personality. See Billy’s story on page 20.
The demonstrations featured hands-on participation
for the attendees. These included stretching and
conditioning exercises designed to keep any dog in
good working shape and extend its working life; puppy
testing for SAR featured a video presentation of the
temperament testing done on a litter of pups, showing
how the testing relates to the requirements of the
different SAR specialties; the session Can My Dog Do
SAR helped interested participants take their dogs
through some SAR basics and test their aptitude. Actual
training activities occurred each day at various sites on
the fair grounds and in town. These training sessions
at various locales were publicly posted and interested
observers were encouraged to attend. SAR training sessions included this one at a local school,
where the dogs were given permission to work one afternoon.

Sterling Blue Sky ... “Billy Blue”
Owner: Wendy Ewing

T
he United Doberman Club was
truly honored to award the 2015
UDC Service Dog of Year Award
to Wendy Ewing and Billy Blue. Billy
is an amazing dog and a true example
of abilities and needs filled by our
awesome Doberman breed.
Congratulations Wendy and Billy!
Billy was certified as an air scent
dog with Middle Creek Search and
Rescue in March 2008, where he
helped on numerous missions.
He was, and continues to be in his
retirement, a wonderful ‘demo dog,’
and loves showing off his trained
signal to alert me when he has located
the lost person. Billy was Delta
Certified in 2007, which was
subsequently replaced by PAWS (PetAssisted Visitation Volunteer Services)
Certification in 2009, so that as a team
we could make greater contributions
in serving our community. Billy
started his reading career in 2010 and
now visits two libraries on a regular
schedule, to the delight of many children and their families.
Children love to read to Billy, and during these past five years
he has impacted and touched many children and adults. Billy
is also a welcome volunteer at Willow Tree Hospice, doing
therapy work and bringing comfort and love to patients at the
end of their lives at two local nursing homes.
Connecting with special-needs children is another one of
Billy’s specialties. For more than three years, Billy has been
visiting classrooms for autistic and special-needs children
where the teachers implement individualized education
programs, using Billy to help reach specific goals with each
child. A highlight of one of these unique relationships is a
young girl that Billy visited one-on-one for many months,
resulting in a measurable improvement in her communication
skills with each visit: counting his toes, brushing him over
and over, and enjoying her private version of hide and seek
after discovering that Billy would eagerly find toys that she
had hidden for him. Another little boy’s mother wrote to
PAWS about Billy’s impact on her son’s life: “I just wanted to
thank you for having Billy Blue visit my son at his school. He
has visited on several occasions, and Eddie is always so excited
to see him. Eddie has an incurable disease that causes seizures
and autistic behavior. This dog always makes him smile, and
he gets so excited. He points to the (picture) card (that Wendy
gives to each child after every visit) and says ‘Blue.’ I wanted
20
uniteddobermanclub.com
to email and thank you for the wonderful
work you do making a little boy and his
mommy’s difficult life a little easier. Keep
up the good work.”
The teacher who works with these
children on a daily basis says, “Billy is
amazing with these special-needs children.
He is very gentle, discerning and alert to
their individual needs and preferences …
and always loving them beyond their
limitations. Billy brings these special
children opportunities for adventure,
discovery and great joy. It is an incredible
privilege to work with him and watch
him transform lives infused with new
hope and confidence.”
Here is an excerpt from Willow Tree
Hospice’s recommendation letter: “During
the past year, Billy was asked to visit with
one of our hospice patients who was living
in a continuing care community with her
husband. When Billy met her, she had
Billy Blue
been moved from her home with her
husband to the dementia unit on the same
campus. Her husband visited her daily.
They owned many dogs as family pets and participated in
volunteer work with various dog rescues and advocacy groups.
Quickly upon meeting Billy and Wendy, both the patient and
her husband fell in love. Billy offered a quiet, gentle presence,
lying quietly at her feet, allowing the patient to pet him. Billy
provided not only comfort, but memories of her own pets and
an opportunity to share her stories. Reminiscing is said to be
one of the rights of a dying patient. Billy offered that by
creating a relaxed and comfortable environment. Comfort is
the primary goal of the hospice philosophy.”
Another key to Billy’s success as a therapy dog is that he
offers an openness that encourages any resident who puts out
a hand to pet him that opportunity. This requires a lot on the
part of the dog in that many patients use potentially scary
walkers or wheelchairs. Alarms and bells sound, and some
patients may be minimally responsive or loudly exuberant in
their greetings. Billy allows all, no matter what the situation,
to relax and find comfort in his presence.
Willow Tree Hospice is very fortunate to have Billy and
Wendy as a pet therapy team. They embody the qualities
that the hospice philosophy is built upon. As an ambassador
for Dobermans, Billy has been an outstanding example. He
continues to show his solid temperament, steady personality
and amazing presence in so many situations. He benefits all
of us and the Doberman breed every day. UDC Focus • Winter 2015

The Working Dobermanns of the Carolinas thank all who
were part of making this year’s national great, one that will
be remembered! We had one of the highest entries in all
venues of any UDC National. So many were part of making
this national a success: Those who worked to exhaustion,
supported the show with entries, made donations to the
silent auction and gave generously to the Trophy Fund. Then
there were those who were unable to attend but still gave
their donations and support on FB. ALL of this is what makes
a great national, and make us proud to be members of the
United Doberman Club! WDC applauds and thanks all of you!
YOU are the ones who made this an event to remember!

After lunch there were five dogs trialing for their BH. The BH stands for

Twilight Astonishing Aerabella with owner Tammy Rush.
At the end of a long day, Loel Turpin graciously took our judge, Carla, to
sightsee across our beautiful Kentucky countryside. The Amish are known for
their exemplary leather work. There is nothing like having good leather for
our working dogs.
Saturday morning we started the day with the two IPO1 obedience dogs.
Jason Bane and Gleena vom Dragonereich earned 81 points. Scott Severs
and Otchi von Warringhof earned 84 points. The IPO2 entries were Chris
Rasmussen with Cabo vom Moeller Hof, getting 75 in obedience. Summer
Melillo and Jett von Pontiffhaus earned 87 points for their obedience routine.
There were five IPO3 entries. Their obedience scores were: 74 points for
Leslie Carpenter and Morgana’s Irresistible Treasure, 91 points for Ally Smith
and Ascomannis Tarzan, 87 points for Jonathan Alvarez and Dark Nemo vom
Koby Haus, 93 points for Robert Marrone and Egon von Schlottke, and 93
points for Scott Severs and Khan von Warringhof.
Our last phase of the competition was protection. Helpers were Darren
Simms and David Cobb. Darren Simms did the IPO1s, IPO2s and the front half
of the IPO3s. David Cobb did the back half of the IPO3s. Both did a great job.
As a competitor, we want the best work with the least chance of injury. Because
it is such a physical sport, there is always a chance of injury to person and dog.
The national level helper work was appreciated by everyone. And there were no
injuries to person or dog. This was quite an accomplishment, when you have
dogs moving as fast as some of these Dobermans were.
Jason Bane with Gleena vom Dragnoereich earned an 87 in protection
for a total of 256. Scott Severs with Otchi von Warringhof earned 90 points
in protection for a total of 273 and High IPO1.

second dog, Khan von Warringhof, got 83 points for a
total IPO score of 266.
High IPO Tracking was awarded to Ally Smith with
Ascomannis Tarzan with 99 points. Their higher protection
score broke the tie between Ascomannis Tarzan and Otchi

High IPO obedience was awarded to Robert Marrone with
Egon von Schlottke with 93 points.
High IPO Protection was awarded to Jonathan Alvarez and
Dark Nemo vom Koby Haus with 98 points.
High in Trial and High Owner Trained was awarded to
Ally Smith with Ascomannis Tarzan, with a total score of
284 points.
The paperwork for a trial of this magnitude is tremendous.
Alissa Weaver did an outstanding job of keeping the trial
organized and all of the paperwork correct and in order. The
job of trial secretary is exhausting, and the trial cannot be
done without one. Thank you for making my job of IPO
chairman easier.
Carla Griffith did an awesome job of judging. It is always
educational to have a judge who understands Dobermans. Not

only was a Doberman her first dog to work in schutzhund, but
she also does helper work and truly understands them as a
breed. She understands their serious nature as well as their
party-boy nature.
The High Point Point All Around Award was won by Leslie
Carpenter with Morgana’s Irresistible Treasure. The award was
sponsored by Pamela Stevens in loving memory of Hunter dei
Dohse. Ray Carlisle presented the traveling HPAA plaque that
was originally sponsored by Vic Monteleon. Both Pamela and
Ray were present for the presentation, and it was memorable
for everyone.
The trophies were spectacular! A big thank you to everyone
who contributed.
On a personal note, I had intended to be present for
the entire week, but due to a family emergency I was
unable to arrive as planned. A special thank you goes to
everyone who picked up the slack when I couldn’t be there,
especially to Chris Rasmussen, who took over my job as

e 2015 UDC IPO Fall Classic
by Linda Lindic
Photos by Cindy Noland
T
he United Doberman Club Fall Classic is a championship IPO trial. It is one
of the upper-level events that allow our Dobermans to compete on an
international level at the IDC Weltmeisterschaft (Doberman IPO World
Championship) held in Europe. The UDC Fall IPO Classic is held in conjunction
with the Doberman Pinscher Club of America (DPCA) National Convention, held
each year in early October in various locations around the country. This year it was
held Sept. 29–Oct. 3i n Lancaster, Penn. The 2016 DPCA National will be Oct. 8–15
in St. Charles, Ill., about 45 minutes west of Chicago. The 2016 IPO Fall Classic
should be during that week.
Background. In 1990, the AKC banned “biting dog” activities for its member
clubs, including the Doberman Pinscher Club of America (DPCA). The United
Doberman Club (UDC) was then created to preserve and protect the working
heritage of our remarkable breed, and was able to do so while the DPCA could not. Fast
forward ... the AKC lifts its ban, and the Working Dog Sport (WDS) is formed. Here is a
little history if you are interested: http://dpca.org/BreedEd/articles/41-obediencetraining/
349-working-dog-sportschutzhund. The DPCA embraced this, and again held WDS trials.
AKC discontinued the WDS after a few years, realizing, I think, that there was no need to
“reinvent the wheel.” At the same time, it approved recording IPO titles on AKC pedigrees
earned at and endorsed by the breed club’s endorsing organization. The UDC is the DPCA’s
endorsing organization.
The DPCA wanted to continue to hold working dog trials at its national after the AKC WDS
ended. So, the UDC was invited to host a championship IPO trial each year during the DPCA
national. And, DPCA voted to reimburse up to $1,000 of any losses incurred by the UDC to
encourage UDC to continue hosting this event at the DPCA national.
The IPO Trial at Lancaster. The UDC IPO Fall Classic was held on Oct. 2, 2015. It was
originally scheduled to be a two-day trial. I had expected a good turnout of competitors as the
largest concentration of working Dobermans is in the northeast. And, because of a bad winter, a
lot of northern competitors did not have much time to prepare for the April UDC national in
Kentucky that was hosted by the Working Dobermanns of the Carolinas. Continued on page 34

Classic continued from page 32 The UDC national had 15 IPO competitors, including BHs.
But, as the quote by Robert Burns goes, “The best laid plans of mice and men often go awry.”
Despite my hope for 10 to 12 competitors at the Fall Classic, it turned out there were only
five. This may be the least number of competitors that we have ever had.
Oh, but what awesome competitors they were! Despite our unexpected guest, Hurricane
Joaquin, who created nasty weather in Lancaster, the competitors and dogs put on
awesome performances in the chill, heavy rain. Three of the four IPO dogs achieved scores
greater than 270! Although it was cold and the rain was heavy at times, four of the five
dogs received tracking scores in the 90s. The tracking fields were lush and green, making
for nice tracks.
These competitors did not just compete in the IPO trial, they helped me set up the IPO
field! You can’t ask for more dedicated and hard-working folks. The 2015 IPO Fall Classic
competitors and dogs were:
Pam Burns and Chalmar’s Major Orca earned their first IPO 3 and became the Fall
Classic Champions.
Scores 97-89-88; Total 274: Jason Bane and Gleena vom Dragonereich BH earned their
IPO 2 and High IPO 2.
Scores 92-89-90; Total 271: Catherine LaBarre and UDC CH Rebholzer Bad Company
CD BN RAE BH IPO1 BSA WAC ATT CGC VCX earned their IPO 1 and High IPO 1.
Scores 96-86-90; Total 272: Nazarene Mondello and Dru’s Chloe V Moss Hill BH FPr1
(trialing for IPO1).
Scores 93-73: Riva von Luka BH BN IPO1 IPO-VO RN WAC CGC,CGN FPr2 earned
her FPr3 with a score of 85.
I was excited for Nazarene Mondello, who was competing with her 8-year-old rescue
bitch Chloe. They were trying for their IPO 1. Unfortunately, it just wasn’t Chloe’s day.
This year was the first that I was the IPO coordinator for the Fall Classic. As president
of the UDC, I felt that it was my responsibility to honor the commitment made by past
officers and directors of this club to host the Fall Classic IPO trial. It was great to spend
three days at the DPCA national in the midst of our beautiful breed. It was great to see so
many Dobermans in a single location. James Barron, the newly elected DPCA president,
attended our draw night event. He introduced himself, welcomed us and thanked us for
bringing our IPO trial to the DPCA national.
At this point, I must thank those who have given me help, advice and guidance
— I would not have been able to pull it off without them. So, thanks to DPCA
Working Dog Chair and UDC member Victoria Hall, who held my hand all the
way; Ann Conroy, who taught me how to order ribbons and trophies; Trial
Secretary Meryl Winnie and Trial Chairperson Lyn Kargaard; and members of the
“group:” Jacque Matson, Mary Chrusciel, Erica Green and Lyn Kargaard. Thanks
also to our official sponsor Hallmark K-9, and Horton’s Handcrafted Quality for
the tracking articles; Jacque and Doug Matson for the blinds; Daniel and Matthew
Heldreth our decoys; and the many bystanders who stepped in to help. And last
but not least, the DPCA for inviting us to its national and subsidizing our losses.

C
onformation is always a popular event, and this was no exception for the 2015
UDC National, which celebrated the United Doberman’s Club 25th year. In
the UDC, the temperament of a dog is as important as its structure; thus, our
philosophy of the “Total Doberman.” In order to achieve Championship status in
the UDC, a dog most not only earn three Challenge Certificates, referred to as CCs,
but pass the age-appropriate temperament test.
Conformation Show No. 1. As was the case on Monday, Tuesday was another
day of heavy rain. We were given special permission to hold this show indoors in
the fairgrounds building. They say “Necessity is the Mother of Invention” — this
proved to be true. We all got together to “circle the wagons,” or rather the chairs.
An impromptu “ring” was created by using chairs! It turned out perfect.
The judge for Conformation Show No. 1 was Dr. James Edwards. He began his
judging career 30-plus years ago, and he has judged throughout the United States,
England, the Netherlands, Switzerland and China.
Dr. Edwards spent time going over each entry and providing a through written and
oral critique of each dog that he judged, noting each dog’s strengths and weaknesses.
There were 39 dogs entered in Conformation Show No. 1. Congratulations to Adult
Best of Breed, GCH Sharjets Starr Catcher, CD, RoM, RA, CGC, and the Best Opposite
Adult, Eclipse’s Kaymen Chaser, IPO2, CD, WAC, BSA-VG2A (pictured at right, bottom).
Conformation Show No. 2. This second show was held on Thursday, April 15,
with a total of 42 dogs. The rain had subsided, so we were back outdoors.
The judge was Nancy Christensen, who is well-known to UDC members who have
attended our shows and nationals. Nancy has had Dobermans since 1974, and has titled
her dogs in many areas of performance: AKC obedience, agility, flyball, dancing and
Schutzhund. She was approved by AKC in February of 2006 as a licensed Doberman judge.
Congratulations to the Adult Best of Breed, GCH Sharjets Starr Catcher, CD, ROM, RA,
CGC, repeating her win from Show No. 1 (pictured center right), and the Best Opposite
Adult, AKC GCH, UKC GCH, UDC CH, Intl CH RATCH Catawba’s Power Play, CD, IPO1,
RN, RA, ROM, VCX, UR02, RAT1, RATM, ASCA RN.
If you have never entered a UDC national or regional conformation show, I urge you to
do so. Come to Ohio in April, 2016. Our tests will judge your dog’s temperament, and the
written and oral critiques will inform you of your dog’s structure. Who knows ... you may
have the next UDC Champion sitting right next to you as you read this!
Congratulations to the following dogs that finished their UDC Championship at the
2016 UDC National:
• Frank DeLaglio and UDC CH Livonija Baron Pompey, CD
• Sharon Marinelli and GCH, UDC CH Sharjets Starr Catcher, CD, ROM, RA, CGC

Barn Hunt Fun at the
2015 UDC National
by Shelby Labrie
B
arn Hunt is a fun, up-and-coming sport, and it was a pleasure to be able to bring
demos and practice sessions to the 2015 national! Many handlers got the
chance to see just what goes on in Barn Hunt, and a handful already involved
in the sport were able to put their dogs through the paces in a new environment.
Unfortunately, there is a misconception in the working dog world that Barn Hunt
will ruin your dogs for tracking, so it was fantastic to be able to talk to the spectators and new handlers, answer their questions and show them just how different
Barn Hunt is from tracking.
Barn Hunt is a sport that allows your dog to let loose and have fun. It is a sport
that allows a chance for your working Doberman to blow of some steam, let their
hair down and use their instincts and nose in a whole new way while building on
your already unbreakable bond.
At the end of national, the two rats used during the week, Bourbon and Derby,
were donated to the local Barn Hunt club by the UDC. My First UDC National

hen I found out we were going to UDC
national in Lexington, I was ecstatic and
anxious all at once. As a lifelong horsewoman,
I could barely contain myself. But as a first-time
Doberman owner/trainer/handler at a national
competition, my stomach literally hurt.
Despite the weather conditions, everyone was
ramped up and ready to go from day one. As a
member of Working Dobermanns of the Carolinas,
the sponsoring club, many duties had to be done to
keep it all running smoothly. I was so grateful for
the guidance of those far more familiar with
the procedures, but more importantly, with the
competitors themselves.
Despite being soaked and muddy for several days
straight, everyone was patient and kept their senses
of humor. When the clouds finally broke and it was
time for the IPO competition, we traveled to the trial
grounds. What? Trial grounds in the middle of a
horse farm? I officially died and went to heaven,
my two worlds collided in a most beautiful fashion.
Phenomenal location, great dogs and fierce
competition. It was a fantastic way to end the
week. As my first experience, it will be hard to top.
Not to mention that my boy, Dekes von Moeller Hof,
took home a first place in Open Dog, and got his BH
that week. I was over the moon.
I’m thrilled to be a part of this dedicated community
and look forward to future competitions. UDC Focus • Winter 2015

2015 UDC National Overview
by Lindsay Davis, National Co-Chair, Working Dobermanns of the Carolinas
T
his was a special national for the
UDC as we were celebrating our
25th Anniversary. Making this an
event to remember was always the goal,
and I do believe we achieved that. There
are so many people who endured many
phone calls and emails from me for
many, many months when this was
a work in progress. Thank you to all,
especially Beth Bishop, Jason Dohse,
Bonnie Guzman, Linda Lindic, Chris
Rasmussen, Jim Toman and Alissa
Weaver. Thank you to all of the
chairs and secretaries for your endless,
exhausting hours of work. Thank
you Brandi Williams for securing
Dragonsmeade Horse Farm for the
IPO Championship. Special thanks to
Frank DeLaglio for all of his work on
the national web page, and to Monica
Anthony for her diligence with
timely updates on FB. Thank you to
EVERYONE who came together and
pitched in wherever help was needed.
Thank you to all who offered demos
and/or workshops. This was a national to remember, and
everyone who worked, entered, supported were all a part
in making this a fabulous national.
We were very fortunate to have been given access to
Drache Feld German Shepherd’s IPO field and tracking fields
that are located on the picturesque Drangonsmeade Morgan
Horse Farm owned by Kee and Susan Fu, Winchester, Ky.
We would like to thank Charlie
Starr and Kee and Susan Fu
for granting the UDC use of
the fields and for securing
alternative practice tracking
when spring rains resulted in
flooded fields.
Thank you Emily and Jesse
Smith for opening your farm
at the last minute for our
practice tracking.
Thank you to all members of
the Working Dobermanns of
the Carolinas for your work,
support and contributions. I am
proud to be a founding member
of our great club!
Thank you to all who
generously donated to the
National Trophy Fund. Because
of your generosity, we were able
to have beautiful trophies, and
give trophies for all placements
in conformation and obedience,
something that we have not
been able to do in the past. We also had keepsake medallions
that everyone attending received. As trophy chair for the 2016
UDC National, I am hoping we can have a repeat performance
for 2016! THANK YOU ALL! Photo: Chris Rassmussen with Elking

News from the Puppy Project
Meet Quest!
Meet Rizzy!
by Pam Burns
by Cris Bean, HRD Handler
Q
uest of the Sun, call name Quest, is the second puppy
do nated through the UDC Puppy Project. Donated by
SolStorm Dobermans, Diane Linstrom, he is destined to
be a FEMA Disaster Dog
This SolStorm litter is full of puppies with enormous potential, and it was difficult to pick between two of the males. But
in the end the little ‘blue’ boy won out, and at seven weeks
and one day, he began his journey. He immediately started his
training by playing on a wide variety of surfaces, being exposed to a number of environmental situations and starting
his ‘human imprinting.’ Diane had done such a wonderful job
of engaging the little noses of all the puppies while they were
very small that Quest’s nose is already fully engaged in learning about his surroundings. He is bold, curious and a thinker.
A wonderful combination of the Total Doberman. Cris Bean and Rayanne Chamberlin wish to thank Puppy Project
breeder Diane Lindstromon for her donations.
I
ntroducing Swift Run’s Lacey Rizzoli, “Rizzy” for short.
Rizzy came to me through the UDC Puppy Project. She was
donated by Tammy Marshall Weldon of Swift Run Dobermans. With the help of Pam Burns, Rayanne Chamberlain and
Irene Korotev, all 10 puppies in Rizzy’s litter were tested as a
potential Human Remains Detection/Disaster Recovery puppy.
Each one of the puppies showed solid confidence and an ability to work in an area of SAR. I thought it was going to be
hard to choose, until the last little girl came out with an attitude and a little bark. Right then and there my heart melted,
and I knew she was the one. I cannot express how overwhelmed I have been with Tammy’s generosity with her donation to the Puppy Project and to me. Rizzy is doing awesome
in her imprinting to human decomposition and her bark indication. She is a smart little girl and will probably keep me on
my toes throughout this journey! Cris Bean and Rayanne Chamberlin wish to thank Puppy Project
breeder Tammy Marshall Weldon for her donations.
