The stacked stone grotto is the eagle scout project work of one of our parishioners this fall. And let me tell you the story of the statue that just got placed in there this week. Last weekend, our tireless flower ladies were working in the back rooms of the church getting ready for the weekend Masses. Looking up through one of the windows, they saw a truck pull up (with PA license plates) with a man and woman jumping quickly out of the truck. With great haste, and without stopping to talk to anyone, they unloaded a statue of Mary, hopped back in the truck, and sped away. So I have taken to calling her Our Lady the Orphan. Some have guessed that maybe the statue was stolen from somewhere. I prefer to think that the statue belonged to their mother or grandmother, and that they were trying to find a home for her. Maybe they looked at our church and said, “I bet they like statues.” Even if they no longer had a home for her, they knew that she should not be just tossed in the trash. For that, I thank our mystery donors. If you know the backstory, don’t hesitate to let me know! We had the staff move the statue down to the grotto that was needing a statue. In fact, when I had considered a statue for that grotto, the one that showed up is the exact image that I had envisioned! It is ‘Our Lady of Grace’ with her hands extended in a welcoming and embracing gesture while rays of grace shine from her hands. For now, I am taking this as a sign that Our Lady wanted this very statue in that very grotto. And it makes me whisper a prayer for whoever first owned and loved the statue, and for the folks who dropped her off on our sidewalk. Speaking of Our Lady, a reminder about this week’s feast of the Immaculate Conception, which is a Holy Day of Obligation. Masses will be at 7 am, 8:30 am, 12 Noon, 5:30 pm, and 7 pm (bi -lingual). pax et bonum, Leesburg, Virginia Masses for the Week † deceased Monday, December 7th 8:30 a.m. † Gabe Stocks 12:00 noon † John Bykowski Tuesday, December 8th 7:00 a.m. † James Carey 8:30 a.m. Constance L. We can meditate on the words of John the Baptist, “Change your hearts and minds, for the reign of heaven is about to break in upon you!” (Mt. 3:2) This is a good time to think about those we need to forgive and make peace with, as well as a time to reach out to others we may have hurt with our words or actions. St. John’s Preschool 15th Annual Christmas Ornament St. John’s Preschool 15th Annual Christmas Ornament will be available after all Masses this weekend and next weekend, December 12-13. This year’s ornament is the fifteenth in the series of St. John the Apostle Church ornaments. It is an archshaped beveled glass ornament depicting the monstrance used for Eucharistic Adoration in the little church at St. John’s. The monstrance is held aloft by two angels that adore Jesus. The ornament comes in a gift box. It includes a gold ribbon for hanging and a short narrative. We also have ornaments from 2014. The 2014 ornament is a circular beveled glass ornament, depicting the church’s crucifixion scene with Mary, John and Christ. The ornaments are a limited edition, with a requested $15 donation per ornament. We hope you will continue to support our Preschool, and enjoy these ornaments as a collectible tradition on your Christmas tree each year. If you would like to obtain an ornament and will not be at Mass, please call Preschool Director Jane Taylor at (703) 7777873 and leave a message. 9:00 a.m. 9:00 a.m. 9:30 a.m. 12:30 p.m. 12:45 p.m. 4:30 p.m. 7:00 p.m. 7:00 p.m. 7:00 p.m. 7:00 p.m. 7:00 p.m. Confessions—Chapel Rosary—Chapel Prayer Shawl Ministry Confessions—Church Legion of Mary Jr. High Religious Ed Ladies Auxiliary Bible Study Jr. High Religious Ed RCIA Christmas Penance Service Tuesday, December 15th 9:00 9:30 4:00 7:00 7:00 7:30 7:30 a.m. a.m. p.m. p.m. p.m. p.m. p.m. Rosary—Chapel Prayer Shawl Ministry Elementary Religious Ed Walking With Purpose Jr. High Religious Ed Legion of Mary PSA Meeting Wednesday, December 16th 9:00 a.m. 9:00 a.m. 9:30 a.m. 10:00 a.m. 4:00 p.m. 6:30 p.m. 7:00 p.m. 7:00 p.m. 7:00 p.m. 7:30 p.m. Rosary and prayers for priests Connect Coffee (WWP) Walking With Purpose Bible Study Elementary Religious Ed Confessions—Church Choir Jr. CYM Squires Meeting Into Mary’s Hand Prayer Group Thursday, December 17th 9:00 a.m. Rosary—Chapel 1:00 p.m. Pro Life Meeting 4:00 p.m. Institute of Catholic Culture Feasts of the Jews: Understanding the Jewish Festal Cycle and its Fulfillment in Christ 4:00 p.m. Elementary Religious Ed 7:00 a.m. Patrician Group Friday, December 18th 10:00 a.m. Into Mary’s Hand Prayer Group Saturday, December 19th 7:00 9:00 9:30 4:00 5:30 a.m. a.m. a.m. p.m. p.m. Men’s Recollection Mass Rosary—Main Church Confessions—Church Mass Sunday, December 20th 7:30 a.m. 9:00 a.m. 10:30 a.m. 10:45 a.m. 12:30 p.m. 2:15 p.m. 6:00 p.m. 8:00 p.m. Mass Mass Latin Mass (Little Chapel) Mass Mass Spanish Mass CYM Advent Candlelight Mass St. John the Apostle Catholic Church Schedules for Weekend of December 12 and 13 Ushers 5:30 p.m. 7:30 a.m. 9:00 a.m. Dunnigan, Kennedy, Mahood, Robbins Hudes, Hudes, Letson, Wynn Csizmadia, Greeley, Melchiorre, Smith, Thompson, Yancy 10:30 a.m. Lapetoda, Rash 10:45 a.m. Adgate, Blue, Fischer, Kavanagh, Steward, Williams 12:30 p.m. Schoppert, Schoppert, Young Lectors 5:30 p.m. 7:30 a.m. 9:00 a.m. 10:45 a.m. 12:30 p.m. Davis, LeGette Ritenour, Dubia Farawell, Sewall Matteo, Phillips Martwinski, Maceda Eucharistic Ministers 5:30 p.m. Atkins, Carroll, Rusciolelli 7:30 a.m. Milton, Greb 9:00 a.m. Farawell, Koyles, Dowgiello 10:45 a.m. Cashen, McCurdy, Fagerli 12:30 p.m. Calhoun, Knapp, Carpenter 2:15 p.m. Moreyra 8:00 p.m. Sewall-Robinson Pray for the sick… Anthony Amoroso, Nelita Aurelio, John Bird, Samuel Bukovac, Agnes Cammack, Thomas (Tom) Cammack, Brian Carnahan, Dan Carroll, William (Skip) Carroll, Steven Cavallo, Helen Coughter, Ed Daigneau, Margoth Echeverry, Marcelo Egas, Andy Flood, Sonya Garvis, Patricia Hughes Gourlay, Michael D. Simbang Gabi -Filipino Advent Mass 2015 Simbang Gabi ,also known as the Misa de Gallo( mass of the rooster ) or Misa de Aguinaldo( mass of gifts), is a rich part of the Philippines Christmas tradition. The Filipino immigrant have proudly introduced this beautiful tradition to the Church in United States. Since winter weather in most parts of the country makes it impractical to hold the Mass celebrations at dawn, local parishes have adapted the practice and celebrate Simbang Gabi in the evenings. Please join us Saturday December 19th at 7:30 pm. Mass will be celebrated by Rev. Fr. Mosimann. A pot luck reception will follow after the mass in the Parish Center. Families attending are asked to bring a dish to share with others. Committee volunteers are greatly needed from our parish to make this annual Advent Celebration a success. If you are interested in volunteering , please contact Theresa Purca (571) 209-0561 or Maria Powell (703) 737-0120. St. John the Apostle Catholic Church Transportation Need St. John's is looking for someone to Lead the Transportation to Mass Ministry. Outreach Christmas Coalition The Outreach Committee, via the Giving Tree, will be collecting gifts that will be donated to the Holiday Coalition. Please consider taking a tag from our Giving Tree to help those in need this Christmas season. Items are needed for infants, children, preteens, teens and seniors. The coalition is also asking for $10 and $20 gift cards so they can be given to families to help them where needed.
