Governor Rick Snyder will be attending the U.P.
State Fair as part of Governor’s Day, August 16th,
2012. This is an opportunity for Delta County
citizens to hear directly from the governor about
issues affecting Delta County and the State of
Michigan.
The businessman-turned-politician has eliminated the Michigan Business Tax, has ended the
double tax on small business owners, and continues to work together with lawmakers to enhance the opportunities for small businesses.
The governor has eliminated the state's $1.5 billion deficit and got
the budget done by the earliest date it has been completed in 30
years. Please, join us in welcoming Michigan’s Governor.
We will gather at the activities tent at 11:00 a.m. Chamber member
restaurants will showcase their signature dishes. Luncheon is $20

The original pulp mill was constructed largely to help investors attract new customers for the hydroelectric capacity being created by dams on the Escanaba
River. The very young City of Escanaba and the local street car line, owned by
the same investment group, were also customers.
The first pulp rolled off the old stone groundwood pulp line on July 5, 1912 at a
rate of 20 tons per day. Since then, the modernized Kraft pulp mill has been supplemented by two pulping lines, utilities, three paper machines and off machine
coaters, and associated equipment, to make up Michigan’s largest paper manufacturing operation. The mill site now encompasses more than 2,000 acres, employs about 1,100 people and produces 800,000 tons of quality paper annually.
“We are very proud to have provided high quality products and services to our
customers for 100 years. Today, the Escanaba mill’s goal is to continue to provide the highest value for our customers, corporation and employees, through
excellence in people, product and process performance,” said Roger Rouleau,
Escanaba mill manager.
Celebrations of the mill’s history have commenced in Escanaba and will continue through the month of July. Historic photos are on display along with a
video highlighting the history of the mill.

Thursday, Sept. 6 to help address emergency response needs.
The fundraiser will be held at the Rapid
River Lions Club at 10491 S. Main Street in Rapid River.
The event runs from 4 p.m. to 11 p.m.
The Bay de Noc Community College Foundation announces their 22nd Annual Delta County Scholarship Golf
Outing scheduled for Thursday, July 19th, at the Escanaba
Country Club. This year’s event is a best ball scramble
beginning with registration at 11:00 a.m. and a shot-gun
start at 12:00 noon. All level golfers (and non-golfers) are
welcome! A reception and auction are set to begin at 5:00
p.m. with dinner and awards following. All proceeds support Bay College student scholarships.

at Vendervest Harley Davison
The world-famous Budweiser Clydesdales, the symbol of
quality and tradition for Anheuser-Busch since 1933, are
scheduled to make several appearances in the area on August 4th, including one at Vandervest Harley Davidson in
Peshtigo.
The eight-horse hitch will be harnessed and hitched to the
famous red beer wagon at Vandervest HD beginning at
12:30pm and will begin unhitching at 3pm with departure
at 4:00pm. On August 4th, the “Gentle Giants,” as they are
often referred to, will engage in a short parade leaving from
Vandervest HD, Peshtigo beginning at 1:30pm. The parade
route will take them up to Bus. Hwy. 41 to S. Stephenson
Ave. to Pine Street to the Old Peshtigo Road to Frontage
Rd. and back to Vandervest Harley-Davidson parking lot.
The Clydesdales’ appearance in Peshtigo is one of hundreds
made annually by the traveling hitches. Canadians of Scottish descent brought the first Clydesdales to America in the
mid-1800’s. Today, the giant draft horses are used primarily for breeding and show.
Horses chosen for the Budweiser Clydesdale hitch must be
at least three years of age, stand approximately 18 hands –
or six feet – at the shoulder, weigh an average of 2,000
pounds, must be bay in color, have four white legs, and a
blaze of white on the face and black mane and tail. A gentle
temperament is very important as hitch horses meet millions of people each year.
A single Clydesdale hitch horse will consume as much as
20-25 quarts of feed, 40-50 pounds of hay and 30 gallons
of water per day.
Each hitch travels with a Dalmatian. In the early days of
brewing, Dalmatians were bred and trained to protect the
horses and guard the wagon when the driver went inside to
make deliveries.

The Small Business Administration
(SBA) is conducting a HUBZone Outreach to present information to small
businesses about the HUBZone Program. This event will help them
prepare for HUBZone Certification and contracting with the Federal Government. The outreach will take place August 9, 2012 from
1 p.m. to 5 p.m. at the Big Powderhorn Mountain Resort in Bessemer, Michigan. There is no registration fee for this event. Wireless
