GEID Water Sources
Odd/Even
Watering
Regulations
Okanagan Lake water, via the McKinley Reservoir, has been the
source of water for the Glenmore distribution system for the past year. Over this time, GEID has seen
marked improvements in water quality and colour for this portion of the system.
Generally, the Ellison customers east of the Airport receive Mill (Kelowna) Creek water during the
irrigation season and well water during the cold months.
Residents of the former McKinley Landing Waterworks system continue to receive Okanagan Lake
water from a separate pump station on Dewdney Rd.
A diagram of the various sources is shown below.
NORTH
Watering is permitted
according to civic
addresses and during
specific hours depending
on whether underground
or above-ground
systems are used. These
regulations apply to all
outside sprinkling. More
information is available
on the website.

Residential Metering
S
ingle family dwellings
represent the last category of
properties to be metered. As
advised with the January 2015
domestic tolls invoices, metered
rates for these single family
residences will be implemented as
of January 1st, 2016. This means
that all properties, including multifamily complexes and commercial,
industrial and institutional facilities
within GEID’s boundaries will
finally be invoiced according to
consumption, reflecting a more
equitable user-pay system.
GEID has selected SENSUS
brand meters to be installed
throughout the area. Due to the
required meter specifications, only
Corix Water Products will be
supplying the SENSUS meters and
components.
Installation options range from
scheduling the installation with
Corix Utilities, hiring a certified
plumber, or installing the meter
yourself. In all cases, the
installation will be inspected to
ensure the works are installed
according to the technical
requirements for the meter
installation.
Costs for the meter, mxu and
installation are the responsibility
of each property owner. Whether
you have a meter in your single
family property or not, flat rate
billings will continue through
December 2015. In 2016, those
properties with meters will be
invoiced according to consump-

tion. In 2016, those properties
without meters will continue to be
invoiced at a flat rate however the
rate is expected to increase
significantly, providing home
owners an incentive to install their
water meters.
Some interesting facts about
water meters:
High water consumption results in
extremely costly capital expansion
projects. Charging for water on the
basis of consumption is useful for
utilities in trying to manage demand
while encouraging conservation.
Water Quality Advisory
The Glenmore and Ellison distribution systems remain on a Water
Quality Advisory. The elderly, the very young and those with
compromised immune systems may wish to boil their water before
consumption. Please visit our website or www.interiorhealth.ca for
more information concerning water notifications.
No Advisory is in effect for the former McKinley Landing
Waterworks System.
Ellison Supply Review
GEID has required water meters
in all new residences since 2003
and on all other facilities since
1993. This means that over 60% of
GEID ratepayers already have
meters and the meter
costs have been borne by those
property owners.
All indoor and outdoor water
use must be recorded through
the meter.
Metered rates are composed of
a fixed base charge, along with a
component for the actual
consumption.
5-Year Capital Plan
Update
Staff have been working with their
Consulting Engineer to update the
District’s 5-Year Capital Plan. This
plan outlines specific projects that
the District expects to undertake
over the next 5 years in order to
replace outdated infrastructure
and meet water quality and permit
requirements under Interior
Health. The Plan does not include
projects that will be driven by and
paid for by development.
As noted in previous newsletters, Staff and Consultants have been
analyzing and investigating water supply to the Ellison area. To that
end, in 2012, GEID was able to install works at the north
end of the airport to take the 2 large strata complexes in

during flushing. Check your water
prior to use and avoid doing
laundry or using hot water while
flushing is underway in your area.
If discoloration is experienced, run
the cold water tap until the water
runs clear.
Private Infrastructure Flushing
Infrastructure not owned by the
District, including within multifamily complexes, schools, plazas
and other properties, is deemed as
private and must also be flushed to
ensure that the freshest water is
delivered to the end user. This
flushing should be conducted
immediately AFTER the District has
completed its mainline flushing.
The Fire Department expects
hydrants to be regularly flushed to
eliminate any deposits which could
affect the pumping capacity of
private hydrants. Private hydrant
permits are available at no charge
and are required from GEID prior to
any private hydrant flushing.
KELOWNA/MILL
CREEK INTAKE
If landscaping, concrete or asphalt
covers the connection, GEID may
be unable to turn off your water
during an emergency. Property
owners are responsible for all
costs to ensure GEID can access
these service connections.
Irrigation Valves
GEID expects that the seasonal irrigation
services will be turned on over a twoweek period in April, focusing on
Ellison/ Dry Valley between April 7
and 10, followed by the Glenmore area
between April 13 and 17. Visit the
District’s website and click on Irrigation
Valves for updates to this schedule.
