Challenges for Pakistani
Women in IT Sector
by Shahzada Irfan Ahmed
Despite the fact that late Arfa Karim inspires a large number
of Pakistani women who are willing to impress the world with
their talent and commitment, country’s social environment
allows very few to pursue career in IT
I
t did not come as a big surprise when a Pakistan Software
House Association (P@SHA) study, carried out back in 2012,
revealed that women represent 14 percent of the IT workforce
and 13 percent of IT managers in the country. This study was
based on two parallel surveys that targeted the HR departments at
one level and simultaneously approached individual women at the
other level, in over 400 P@SHA member companies. The analysis
was derived from the responses received from 49 companies and
124 individuals.
It was also observed that 37 percent of women polled were in
8 MORE
April 2016
mid-career level positions at their companies whereas only 13
percent of women were in senior management positions. Based
on the company survey data, the most women-friendly companies
among those polled belong to the education sector where 24
percent of the IT workers are women, the internet services, and
oil & gas industries follow with 20 percent female participation
and the computer hardware industry with 17 percent woman IT
workforce. All of these industries have a larger proportion of
women in the labor force as compared to the national average.
www.moremag.pk
So, if this is the case, the question is that what is keeping them
away from coming into the mainstream and opting for this
profession? Even, the more pertinent question is that how can
women’s participation in the IT sector be increased.
A study “Gender Elevation through IT Training: A Social
and Emotional Dimension” based on responses of Bachelors
of Education (B.Ed) students in the Government College for
Elementary Teachers, Sharaqpur, answers the first question to
an extent. It says women suffer from a kind of social inferiority
and have few opportunities to widen their horizons and see their
confidence boosted.
It states: “Learning computer skills may help economically, yet its
social and emotional influences have been entirely ignored. The
young women blooming with ideas, imaginations and fantasies
of life, who do not find opportunities to express themselves, may
have a catharsis through digital communication. They may come
out of the realm of depression through wide exposure for their
creativity and innovations because the World Wide Web provides
them access not only to their friends but the whole world beyond
their immediate environment.”
When asked, during a classroom discussion about sources of
knowledge and information regarding syllabi, the prospective
female teachers revealed that they had no opportunity to use
computers especially the internet or communicational sites at
their homes or institutions. They complained that they were kept
away from computers by their brothers and fathers, and it was
thought harmful or dangerous for their values.
Most of the girls could play games and use a word processor for
academic purposes but could not use the Internet and other social,
communicational sites because their brothers and fathers did not
allow them.
Madiha, a mother of two, recalls that around 15 years ago there
was a boom in the international call center business and girls
would feel safe in that working environment. Though there were
multiple shifts, she says, the female staff would be accommodated
in morning and mid-shifts. Even if someone had to work during
www.moremag.pk
night shift for some time, there would be little or no fear while
travelling to and from the workplace.
She says this field suited young girls who could speak correct
English in proper accent and worked as a gateway to the field of
IT. But, unfortunately, the 10-day country wide Internet outage
back in 2005 dealt a severe blow to this business exactly when it
was taking off. Pakistan had started giving competition to India by
bringing similar workforce at cheaper rates, she adds. This outage
cut off the country’s call centre industry from the world which
has still not recovered. Millions of Internet users remained offline
during this period and services such as online banking and online
ticketing remained suspended. Though things have improved, the
country has not been able to restore the confidence of clients fully,
she laments.
Uzair Shahid, Programme Manager at Plan9-an initiative of
Punjab Information Technology Board (PITB) that supports tech
startups and helps ideas mature-observes that females have fared
very well in this field. He tells More that women have either been
the main force behind many successful startups or have been part
of the launching teams.
“
An alarming 29 per cent
companies did not offer a paid
maternity leave – which is
commonly regarded as the most
basic of HR benefits for women
“
Around four years down the road, one finds the same trends
prevailing in the market though there is a strong realisation that
women can be empowered by equipping them with IT skills and
creating spaces for them in the job market. The wonderful world
of internet connectivity also offers them unique opportunities to
work from home and connect themselves with the world. They
can set up enterprises, create jobs and earn handsome incomes
through e-commerce activities.
He says the very fact that the record of the youngest Microsoft
Certified Professional (MCP) in the world has remained with
Arfa Kareem- a Pakistani girl who passed the test at the age of
9-hints at the potential that our women have in this field. The Arfa
Software Technology Park (ASTP) named after her is a symbol
of excellence and encourages Pakistanis, especially the women to
follow the example of this amazing girl and try their luck in the
field of information technology.
Citing examples of successful startups, he says Markhor is coheaded by Sidra Qasim-a formidable, no-nonsense woman has
made it a top global shoe brand with extreme dedication and
quality digital marketing.
Similarly, he says, Rameeza Moin is the CEO at Transparent
Hands, a socially responsible startup bringing foreign charitable
donations directly to the aggrieved through an unprecedented
channel of easy and transparent donation flow.

Maha Jaffer, Research Head at Capital Stake, Pakistan’s first
independent financial research company, has made a mark for
herself despite little support from home. Her best choice was to
join a startup and build it from scratch.
Sophia Parvez, Chief Product Officer at ClubInternet with work
experience at IBM is part of the team of Islamabadians all set to
educate the world how to use technology.
Another girl Aisha Ameer is the one who launched Daastan-a
startup working on the revival of literature.
Similarly, there is Arusha Imtiaz, co-founder at SMAC FACTORY
that aims to revolutionize the local education sector by plugging
the communication gap, in particular between the teachers and
the parents.
Salim says their ecommerce portal Turbooz.com also provide
opportunities to women to benefit from technology and sell their
products in the global market. They can work from home and
promote their culture and heritage by selling their products online,
he adds.
Fozia Viqar, Chairperson of Punjab Commission on the Status of
Women, shares it with More that the Commission is a statutory
body tasked with the mandate to promote gender equality. This
can be done by the empowerment of women and elimination of
all forms of discrimination against women.
On women’s involvement in the IT sector, she says their numbers
are less than desired. One reason is there is a gap between supply
and demand as the universities are not providing demand-based
education. The timings issue is also important, she says, adding
Uzair observers that the qualities that give women a leading
edge in the field of IT are consistency focus on work and good
communication skills. Unlike their male counterparts, they are
hardly distracted-something that bodes well for their work, he
concludes.
Despite the promise women have shown, a matter of concern is
that the intended rate of attrition women IT workers is high. The
P@SHA study cited above finds that 32 per cent of the women
who responded to this question reported that they may leave
their current employers within the next year. An alarming 29 per
cent companies did not offer a paid maternity leave – which is
commonly regarded as the most basic of HR benefits for women.
Further, out of the 71 per cent of the companies that offered
maternity leave, only 22 percent provided daycare facilities. Nonflexible working hours and problems regarding grant of emergency
leaves were found to be other major issues confronting women in
the IT sector, during the study.
Salim Ghauri, CEO Netsol Technologies, tells More that the
company strives to make it the best possible workplace for
women. He says they have a daycare facility, available to both
men and women, so that the employees can work with peace of
mind. “We also provided pick and drop facility for females. As a
result, we have been able to retain our female employees and this
has also encouraged women to apply in NetSol.”
there should be flexibility on the part of software houses to allow
females to work from home. Besides, she says it is also important
for everybody to change the mindset about females that they are
not working well. She suggests that career counseling at college/
university level should be ensured, and courses should be selected
as per market demand by students, especially females.
Against this backdrop, the role of the government also becomes
critical. Though individual and collective efforts are being taken
at a limited scale, there is no second opinion that government’s
intervention is a must to promote information technology as a
field of education and career choice for women.
The ICT for Girls project is one such initiative by the government
under which thousands of girls will be trained by Microsoft on
coding and computing to increase their employability potential.
The initiative has been taken under joint collaboration of the
Federal Ministry of Information Technology, Bait-ul-Maal,
Universal Services Fund and Microsoft. The programme is based
on the concept of 4Cs-computing, coding, communication and
coaching.
No doubt it is a good step but the point is that scale of such
initiatives will have to be increased, and their reach shall be
extended to all the classes of the society. Only then will the
desired objectives will be fulfilled.
Most of the girls could play games and use a word processor for academic
purposes but could not use the Internet and other social, communicational
sites because their brothers and fathers did not allow them

In the name of

Computer Science lives in a world far beyond simple word processors,

C
omputer Science – by quick definition, a scientific and
practical approach to computation and its applications –in
reality, is a cosmic stream. From feasibility to structure,
from expression to algorithms, there is a Vulcan-like logical
component out there for each and every student in Pakistan. To
find them, our young minds must be exposed to the subject at the
right time, in the right manner, by the right teacher.
Approximately 445,000 students graduate each year from our
universities, but only 10,000 Computer Science graduates are
among them. Some 1.3 million Indian Institutes of Technology
Computer Science students take a standard assessment exam every
year, but a mere 40,000 are able to pass the intermediate exam
in Computer Science (ICS) here. Many enter the Information
Technology (IT) sector without further proficiency testing.
The IT sector includes software development, and it is expanding

rapidly throughout our figurative and literal digital world. With
neighbor India sitting in the catbird seat when it comes to software
exports; Pakistan should take stock of its rank at No. 20.
On our side of the border, investing in IT too often has meant
investing in grandiose efforts, such as skyscrapers like those
found at Arfa Software Technology Park in Lahore, or investing
in bureaucratic machines such as the Pakistan Information
Technology Board (PITB). Both have failed miserably when they
had the opportunity to add a valuable vertebra –meaning enhanced
secondary education; particularly in the area of computer science
-- to the deteriorating backbone of our proud homeland.
Today, a growing majority of our students are selecting Computer
Science as an elective, forgoing Biology and Economics. They
believe – based on the worldwide Information Technology boom
www.moremag.pk
–the former will provide them with a better career trajectory. The
Pakistan Social and Living Standards Measurement Survey (PSLM
2015) shows the percentage of students who opt for Computer
Science over Biology at the secondary level is 62 percent. While
only 28.2 percent of students who enroll at primary level reach
the secondary mark, their tilt toward Computer Science to such an
extent is remarkable.
of interesting examples and problems that would be suitable to
adding to each student’s level of knowledge and programming
ability. Their students never learn to discover algorithms, analyze
them or compare different paths to solutions.
This interest should be used as to boost the technology and
software sector, but because of poorly designed curriculums, the
anticipated benefits and rewards have turned into a nightmare of
barely computer-literate job seekers. As much as it pains me to
say, they dream big but lack the skills of their Indian counterparts
and other sophisticated minds who are proudly living their Silicon
Valley dreams.
Computer Science is not a subject that can be “taught.” Instead,
it must be “discovered” and “learned” by fascinated students.
Their passion for it must be instilled, fed and nurtured by our
most competent teachers. Students should be presented with
opportunities to learn the representation of data in coding formats.
Young children especially love codes; you probably can recall
your own fascination with Morse code. With high interest intact,
these young minds can then be challenged to explore. Only then
will they begin to understand that algorithms really are a vital set
of operating instructions and directives.
A deeper dive into a particularly appropriate area of our country’s
secondary Computer Science curriculum shows the following
components:
Level (IX-X) – Grade 9th-10th 1) Introduction to Computer;
2) Computer Components; 3) Input Output Devices; 4) Storage
Devices; 5) Computer Software; 6) Introduction to Windows
XP; 7) Word Processing (MS Word 97); 8) Data Representation;
9)Boolean Algebra; 10) Problem Solving; 11) Input / Output
Statements; 12) Control Statements; 13)Arrays; 14) Sub-Program;
15) Graphics in Basic; 16)Problem Solving
that can be “taught.” Instead, it
must be “discovered” and “learned”
by fascinated students
“
“
Computer Science is not a subject
While the 2016 secondary school curriculum -- with Windows XP
and MS Office 97 – may appear impressive to some, in reality,
the student under the umbrella of Computer Science find their
endeavors have very little or nothing to do with comprehending
the subject at hand.
Prof. Dr. Abdul Hameed, Dean Department of Education in
University of Management and Technology said in a conversation,
“I have witnessed too many students spending hours memorizing
the syntax of programming languages. They regurgitate this
information during exams. However, when the students who pass
these exams are then given a simple project, they often are unable
to summon any form of creativity – or think for themselves –
because they have been conditioned to rely upon memorization
and recall to serve them.”
Inexperienced Computer Science teachers add fuel to this raging
fire. Too many know nothing about the computer programming.
They are little more than computer users who quickly run out
www.moremag.pk
Yes, you know the article will advocate necessary changes, but
let’s first consider our teaching methodologies.
Asim Sheharyar Tareen, MD, Pakistan Software Export Board
said, “The concept of algorithms is so critical in this area of study,
the best teachers will ask students to find the difference among
algorithms with which they already may be familiar. Simple
board games, card games, and recipes – even the operation of a
microwave oven -- can be illustrative and used to build the interest
of students in algorithm-reliant software programming. There is a
dire need to make Computer Science more compelling and “real”
than say, Biology when it comes to teaching methodologies. This
will legitimately capture the imagination, increase the interest of
students and promote discoveries within this subject.
Students should be encouraged and afforded opportunities to
discover new algorithms, analyze them and explain them. We
continue to push rote memorization upon students in advanced
grades of Biology, Chemistry, and Physics, but if that becomes the
rule of the day for Computer Science, we will rue the day.
Without fully inculcating discovery and innovations within their
impressionable minds, we are only fooling one another.
Seriously, who’s kidding whom?
As students are exposed to these concepts, they also will be
gradually learning algorithm-based problem-solving strategies.
Moreover, they will be able to remember them – and build upon
them -- thanks to the journey of personal discovery.
Let’s call this academic conflict as route vs. rote.
The primary objective should be to teach children a new set of
reasoning and problem-solving skills -- namely creating the rules
of a game rather than merely following them.
Computer Science means so much more than learning to
program in Java or C++. Programming is central to computing,

As such, we must end the lingering confusion between Computer
Science and Information and Computer Technology (ICT) skills;
knowledge about the latter often is delivered by non-specialists.
However, here’s the Catch-22.
The high demand for IT professionals is reducing the supply of
our most well-qualified teachers–as well as would-be teachers.
Hence, there is a critical need for teacher training within the realm
of Computer Science.
Until we can clearly differentiate Computer Science as a rigorous
subject based upon digital literacy, Pakistan will only produce
“pseudo-scientists” who will not be revered on the world’s stage.
This burden rests on the broad shoulders of the government.
University of Health Sciences and the Pakistan Medical & Dental
Council oversee testing for the medical field. The Pakistan
Engineering Council (PEC) requires standard examinations
for mechanical, electrical, civil and other related disciplines.
However, there is no “capping” body to check the quality of
learning of these future software engineers. To tackle this glaring
oversight, the PEC was given the task of testing for software
engineering skills, despite having only two professional software
engineers to coordinate tests for this vital acumen. This shows a
seriousness lack of acknowledgment about the actual impact of
this burgeoning sector that will be so vital to the future of our
beloved country.
The demand is real for properly-accredited professionals to help
students believe that Computer Science is not confined only to
learning the definitions of hardware. Nor is it to be considered
synonymous to using word processors and spreadsheets and
presentation software.
Shamim Akhtar, the principal of a renowned private school
in Kasur, explained that how students -- mostly in pursuit
of their Secondary School Certificate --are being exposed to
programming. After being previously exposed only to writing on
a word processor or creating presentations, software programming
appears as on screen as a mind-boggling hailstorm of foreign
alphabets. Unfortunately, they have been set up for failure.
Those who tout the telecom sector -- and portray it as an indicator
of progress within the IT sector –must realize the realities. Sure,
we’ve made some progress if you count the number of SIM cards
sold and cellular subscribers. However, real progress in the area
of Computer Science will be quantified by the volume of software
that is exported, the number of automated businesses, and in
particular by the number of students born under our national flag

who finally can reach the heights of Silicon Valley. Only a fierce
determination will allow us to compete with India and the rest of
the world’s brilliant minds.
Stop haphazardly placing diploma holders as Computer Science
teachers. It is mind-boggling that the Government of Punjab,
which has appointed thousands of science teachers within the
province in last two years, did not feel compelled to announce
similar vacancies for Computer Science teachers. It is time to get
our heads out of the clouds and strategically invest in our most
valuable resource – the future of our children.
Develop content standards of Computer Science that are on a
par with Biology, Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics. This
will provide a clear pathway to the development of standards
for classroom instruction and advanced curriculums for teachereducation programs at the B.Ed. and M.Ed. level. A standardized
exit examination that rates IT skills, administered over a period of
time, may be useful in evaluating efforts to adapt and improve a
curriculum.
“
Unless we clearly differentiate
Computer Science as a rigorous subject
based upon digital literacy, Pakistan
will only produce “pseudo-scientists”
“
but underlying principles of algorithms, data structures, and
computational thinking are considerably more durable.
Demand that the apparently accepted practice of taking a
Computer Science education for granted must cease immediately.
For the sake of our country’s pride, advancement and, yes, national
security, the federal and provincial ministries of Education – and
related departments -- must quickly acknowledge this area as a
unique discipline and act to address past failures.
Recognize that outdated hardware --coupled with a lack of
resources -- must be addressed as the national emergency that it
has sadly and actually become. Burying our heads in the sand is
no longer an option. Only with vision and pride can we proceed
along a path of educational excellence in Computer Science.
Asian tigers, once found in forests, are there no more.
They had to adapt.
Pakistan’s potential Computer Science geniuses – our own
endangered species -- should know that when they enter a
classroom in Pakistan, they will be receiving proper training and
superior encouragement.
Can our leaders adapt as well?
There’s really no choice, especially if they want to spare untold
future generations the harsh indignity of lagging even farther
behind the rest of world during the dawn of the Cyber Age.

Alarming Swell
of
ACs, UPSs
invites Climatic Armageddon
by Yasir Habib Khan
A
s summer is impending, electricity-generated appliances
peculiarly Air Conditioners (ACs) and Uninterrupted
Power Suppliers (UPSs), phenomenal cause of emitting
greenhouse gases that plague environment, is about to surge up to
80 percent in homes and commercial buildings.
Because Ministry of climate change (MOCC) and Pakistan
Environmental Protection Agency (PEPA) shy away to regulate
dangerous spillover of AC and UPSs, healthy ecosystem and
quality of life that is fundamental right of people is on the path of
fast approaching climate Armageddon.
Last year ACs and UPSs registered almost 70 percent upswing.
Fearing erstwhile heat wave stint, longer sweltering spells and
epidemic outages throughout the country, use of ACs and UPSs is
all set to go through the roof.
Carbon Dioxide CO2 makes up 71 percent of emitted greenhouse
gases. Other greenhouse gases include Methane 18 percent,
Nitrous Oxide (NOx) 9 percent. They are increasing at the rate
of 3 % per annum. All gases have their horrendous role after they
discharge when ACs, UPS, and other home power-generated
appliances are plugged in. More they are used more atmospheric
temperature rises.
Environmentalist Dr. Saghir asserts that Pakistan has produced
0.2 million metric tons CO2 emission due to unregulated use of
ACs and UPSs, refrigerators and other home power-run items
besides other factors.
“As the government is mistreating environment like a stepchild,
overall temperature in Pakistan has been shooting up by 1.2 to 1.9
degrees centigrade in various territories,” he laments.
Climate change mostly affected by uncurbed CO2 emission has
wide-ranging and adverse impacts on human health. It leads to
increase in the deadly transmission of vector-borne diseases,
including malaria and dengue extending the range of organisms
such as insects that carry these diseases into the temperate zone.
In 2015, Karachi came to fore after being exposed to unprecedented
heat spell and climatic variability. Karachi general temperature
that usually stays around 27 to 36 centigrade boiled up more than
48-degree centigrade. Around 710 people died due to scorching
www.moremag.pk
heat. Thickly-populated province of Punjab suffered dengue
epidemic in 2001 that claimed lives of more than 300 people.
According to the Climate Risk Index 2015 prepared by German
watch between 1994 and 2013, more than 531,000 people perished
worldwide and losses stood worth $2.17 trillion as a result of over
16,000 extreme weather events.
“Pakistan's carbon emissions will peak to 410 million tonnes
of CO2 equivalent (per year) by 2030 if the business-as-usual
scenario remains unchanged,” said Qamar-uz-Zaman Chaudhry,
author of Pakistan's climate change policy and former directorgeneral of the Pakistan Meteorological Department.
He cautions that if an emergent step is not taken, greenhouse
emissions would accelerate worst climate changes that trigger
melting process of glaciers in the north, foment severe floods and
harm the country's economic growth.
Despite the fact, the country is embattling power deficit; energy
appetite appears to grow at 4.3 percent to 6.1 percent annually
as per calculation studied under Energy Outlook 2007-22 by
Petroleum Institute of Pakistan.
As per market estimation, 250,696 air conditioners were
produced last year showing 20.45 percent increase in the same
corresponding year in the country. Production of deep freezers
also rose up marking a significant 54 percent increase.
To negotiate load shedding, UPS has become a salient feature
of every house. About 65 to 75 per cent people have UPS in
their homes. They consume about 2200 MW of electricity while
substan¬dard electrical equipment and home appliances put a
massive burden on limited power capacity.
“UPS is proved to be destroying indoor air quality because the
acid inside the lead battery ooze out vapours and fumes that
collect in one place which can trigger serious health concerns,”
says the EPA Punjab DG Javed Iqbal detailing how the plates
inside a lead battery boiled up the heavy water that then produced
hydrogen and other poisonous gases.

He says teens tend to be most vulnerable because they are
susceptible to suck their fingers or objects that might be toxified
with dust and because their growing bodies absorbed lead readily.
As per reports, he shares that children absorb up to 55 per cent of
lead taken into their body, compared to 15 per cent in adults.
“An even low level of lead in the blood is dangerous for kids,” Mr.
Iqbal advises for buying sealed dry lithium batteries such as those
in phones and cameras.
Shining light on the issue, Ganga Ram Hospital senior Doctor
Sheikh Masood holds view that UPSs even ACs produce
greenhouse gases due to which there are high chance of illness
during pregnancy, harm to a fetus including brain damage and
even death, fertility problems in both men and women, high blood
pressure, digestion issues, nervous system disorders, memory and
concentration problems and muscle and joint pains are some other
diseases that are gifts of electricity generated home appliances.
The envisioning environmental impact of ACs, UPSs, and other
home items that are a necessity of life, time is ripe for regulating
and cutting their energy consumption. There is also need to check
their manufacturing processes to water down their hazards on eco
system
When asked higher demand of Air conditioners putting immense
pressure on power plants that have been churning out 100 million
tons of CO2 emissions every year in Pakistan, NUCON engineer
CEO Mr. Mustafa Khalid bears the fact that first environmentcaring air conditioning system was invented by Willis Carrier in
1902.
“Since then till date, most of the companies are producing
products including air conditioners, global Chiller range, screw
machines, aluminum condenser coil with AquaForce range, the
second generation of microchannel coils and others which aim
to cut down indirect CO2 emissions and save energy at optimum
level,” he says.
As per new study from The Freedonia Group Inc., a Clevelandbased market research firm, it is revealed that ACs and other
equipment demand worldwide is predicted to bloom 5.7 percent
annually. With major catalysts like spiral growth of housing
societies, massive urbanization, mega structures for commercial,
semi-commercial and industrial domains, Pakistan also witnesses
promising consumption for HVAC appliances.
Pakistan appears to have been currently planning to reduce its
greenhouse gas emissions by 31 per cent from 2009 levels by
2025.
Laying down possible solution, he says that in tune with spiral
market needs for better livable housing units, commercial and
industrial buildings, “Building Energy Management System”
(BEMS) with nature-friendly HVAC & R products is dire need
of hour.
In an exclusive interview with former Federal Minister for
Climate Change and Senator Mushahidullah Khan he claims that
government draft “intended nationally determined contribution”
(INDC) is in making. As soon as policy is outlined, emission of
greenhouse gases would face major cut, he explains
He mentions that ACs and other HVAC & R products’ market
volume in Pakistan ranged between 180-200 million dollars which
testify gradual upswing for air-conditioning appliances in the
country. He foresees their growth around 12 percent (residential)
and 30-40 percent (commercial) per annum.
He says government is making all out effort to reduce formerly
used as cooling agents, ozone-depleting chlorofluorocarbons
(CFCs) by replacing hydrochlorofluorocarbons (HCFCs), which
deplete 95 percent less ozone.
The most recent scientific assessment by the Intergovernmental
Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) warns that the global averaged
surface temperature on Earth will rise up by 1 to 3.5°C (about 2 to
6°F) by the year 2100, with an associated rise in sea level of 15 to
95 cm (about 6 to 37 inches).
Reports reveal that robust demand for air conditioners has
increased chemical's output in developing countries like Pakistan
from 20 to 35 percent each year, inflicting dent at an alarming rate
and impair ozone recovery by 25 years.
Meanwhile, rise of electricity-generated appliances in residential,
commercial and industrial sectors sans energy efficient systems
and green building technologies has played a perilous role in
impairing quality life. Strenuous efforts, though desperately
demanded, are not off the charts. People being major stakeholders,
most of market players and government have yet to act together to
make a turnaround.

ell has its presence in Pakistan for nearly 20 years. The
US-based computer technology company is known for
various kind of ventures in the country. The company
was part of first ever Student Laptop Scheme in Pakistan. Despite
changing technological fronts and popularity of smartphones for
daily computing needs, the company is still optimist for taking
part in the technology revolution in Pakistan through its PCs and
IT solutions.
Dell’s General Manager and Director for Pakistan and Afghanistan,
Saadat Ali wishes to be one of the leading end-to-end solution
providers.
Currently, the company is holding various seminars countrywide
and educating corporate sector, government and other stakeholders
on the custom-designed security solutions.
Once known for its laptops, desktops, and servers, the company
seems more interested in government’s mega-projects and
enterprise solutions.
In an exclusive one-to-one chat with More Magazine, Mr. Saadat
rules out the impression that Dell no more takes the computer
business seriously. Instead, he explains that Dell offers preinstalled security features even on the tablets.
“We are focusing on the safety features, and newly data center
solutions aim at building future-ready enterprises and workforce.
From PCs and thin clients to servers, storage, and networking
products, Dell’s solutions equip businesses with the agility and
resilience to keep up with a dynamic marketplace and define the
future of the connected workforce”. Mr. Saadat explained.
The shift from consumer to enterprise business has somehow
affected the consumer market in Pakistan which is flooded with
smuggled products including laptops and parts. In past few years,
the major channel partners have been replaced by many small

sellers who do not have much to offer regarding warranty, after
sales services and latest product models.
Mr. Saadat finds Dell in a better position to cash the opportunity.
He says Dell is number 1 in Pakistani consumer market. Although
the market is not growing the way it should, however, I can see
enough demand for computers in the smaller cities where people
have yet to own a computer for the first time in their lives. I
believe this market will also grow with the enterprise market. I
can see the government is taking many initiatives which will give
the much-needed boost to the industry”.
For the first time in Pakistan, Haier has set up a laptop assembling
unit. The Chinese company is not known for manufacturing
laptops, rather, the fame comes from the consumer electronic
businesses. We put the question as to why companies like Dell
never took initiative for building a manufacturing or assembling
facility in the country. Mr. Saadat bluntly responded, “ It is rather
an issue of economies of scale. If you see the worldwide trend,
everyone is getting products from the ODM (original design
manufacturer). For us, it is more important to recognize our goal.
We should think whether our goal is to install an assembly plant
here, or to provide the technology at an affordable price to the
customers”.
“If you think there will be more chances for the job if we started
manufacturing our products in Pakistan, then it is not true. Due to
technology automation, there is little manpower needed nowadays
in this field”, added Saadat.
As the country is developing, CIOs and IT leaders in Pakistan
are seeking integrated solutions to support traditional enterprise
applications and the latest technology trends to drive their
competitive advantage. Mr. Saadat believes that Dell’s futureready solutions help local businesses run more efficiently by
providing a fast, flexible path to converged, software-defined, and

Punjab Healthcare Commission has
sealed 35,000 healthcare establishments
including diagnostic labs over malpractice
Fraudulent Diagnostic Labs
Customers siphoned off, authorities stay indifferent
by Khuaja Usman
I
t was the year of an epidemic. In 2011, dengue hit the province
of Punjab. There was a panic in the hospitals. Thousands of
patients thronged the Emergency Departments of the hospitals
in fear. Even doctors were not trained enough to handle such huge
influx of patients. The government figures state some 300 people
lost lives and 140,000 were hospitalized, 90 percent of them in
Lahore due to dengue.
Almost everybody even with a regular fever rushed to the
diagnostic laboratories to get the Complete Blood Count (CBC)
done - a lab test that counts the platelets in blood to confirm
weather or not a patient has contracted dengue. And this is when
Punjab government “discovered” a pitfall: diagnostic labs charged
20 MORE
April 2016
patients at their discretion as there was no regulatory authority to
check their practices. The labs charged as much as Rs 900, almost
10 times more than the actual price, for a simple CBC test.
The government came into action and under the Punjab Prevention
and Control of Dengue (Temporary) Regulations, 2011 made it
mandatory for all the diagnostic labs not to charge above Rs 90
for a CBC test.
The epidemic exposed how these diagnostic labs in Punjab are
looting patients under the very nose of the government authorities
in the absence of any regulatory laws. As soon as the epidemic
was over, laboratories were back to their usual practices.
www.moremag.pk
Currently, the charges for a CBC test at private diagnostic labs,
done free at all public hospitals, range between Rs 200 to Rs
700. The labs charge for common tests like Liver Function Tests
(LFT), complete urine test and sugar tests on their discretion. A
same test of LFT costs Rs 850 at Sahara Laboratory, Rs 1200 at
Chughtai Lab, Rs 1400 at Shaukat Khanam Lab.
“These labs are only looting people. There is no check on them
and in absence of any strict laws to regulate their practices,
these labs are thriving. There are thousands of labs only in the
city of Lahore. They charge patient as much as they want and
sometimes they force patient to get those tests done which are not
even required. This is done just to mint money from the patients,”
said Dr Salman Kazmi, General Secretary of Young Doctors
Association and a Medical Officer at Mayo Hospital.
“There are certain labs which have signed contracts with different
firms that send laborers/workers to Middle East, Saudi Arabia
and other gulf countries. This is now an open secret that many
of these labs don’t give a fitness certificate to healthy patients
without taking bribe or doing same tests for multiple times. Many
such people come to Mayo Hospital after they are diagnosed
with Hepatitis B or C at some private labs and once their tests are
done here, they are pronounced completely fine. The problem is
that the firms don’t accept the medical certificates by labs other
than the ones which are on their panel. This makes things really
complicated for people who sometimes not only pay huge sums of
money to get clean reports but also go through a mental trauma of
suffering a disease despite being healthy,” Dr Kazmi said.
He said the health department and Punjab Healthcare Commission
need to play an effective role to end such practices. “I got a job
to work in Dubai in a construction company. I was told to get my
tests done by a private laboratory in Shadman. When the reports
came, I was told I had hepatitis. I got really disturbed as I hadn’t
faced any problems or health issues. I spoke to the lab guy and
told him of my problem that I had to go to Dubai. He said he
would charge me Rs 50,000 to get me clean reports. I negotiated
and in the end I gave him Rs 30,000 and he got me cleared. Later,
when I got my tests from another laboratory, I had no virus in
my blood. I realized that I had filled a form which said that I
needed reports to go abroad and may be that was the point when
the lab guys tried to cheat on me and minted money from me,”
said Fayyaz Hussain, a citizen.
“These laboratories not only charge higher than the actual prices
of the tests they use malpractices to mint money,” he added.
Mian Suleman, another victim of the diagnostic labs, said he
and his family had to suffer extreme trauma due to a mistake by
the labs. He, however, isn’t sure was it an honest mistake or a
deliberate tactic. “I was suffering from fever for some days.
Doctor advised to get some tests done. When the reports came,
www.moremag.pk
they suggested I had cancer. The doctor, my family physician, was
astonished and furious. He asked me to get tests done from another
lab. And when the reports came, they didn’t indicate any problem.
I protested with the first lab, however, they just excused and said it
may have happened due to some mistake,” he maintained.
Pakistan Medical Association (PMA) Vice President Dr Rana
Sohail believes majority of the diagnostic labs are running a
dangerous business and don’t have enough qualified staffers. “At
a diagnostic lab you should have at least a qualified pathologist
and hematologist. But sadly, most of these labs just use the name
of the doctors on their boards who actually don’t work there.
Their names are used and unqualified people run the affairs at
these labs. If you strictly start scrutinizing these labs, you will find
out that many of these labs use the names of the same doctors on
their panel. This is how they cheat patients,” Dr Sohail said.
Speaking about the malpractices of the diagnostic labs to make
money he said, “I am aware of the patients who paid huge amount
of the money to these laboratories through third party to get
clean reports. They deliberately issue unfit reports to people and
later declare the same person fit after minting the money. The
companies which send labor to countries in Middle East, cut a
deal with these labs. They make a deal with their clients to issue
them clearance reports from these labs and keep their share of the
money as well”.
At a diagnostic lab, you
should have at least a
qualified pathologist and
hematologist. Most of these
labs just use the name of the
doctors on their boards who
don’t work there
“The lack of any uniformity in the prices of the test is another issue.
The government should ensure that the quality is maintained at
these labs, and they do not charge patients as per their discretion,”
he added.
Health Department Spokesman Ikhlaq Ali Khan said the
government made these labs bound under special regulations
during dengue epidemic of 2011 to not charge above Rs 90 for
a CBC test. He said uniformed pricing was done at that time
because that was an emergency situation. He, however, stated that
currently department didn’t do anything to control the pricing and
quality at these labs. “One reason they give for different pricing
is that some labs claim their quality of tests is much better than
others so they charge more,” he added.

composed a draft of Minimum Service Delivery Standards for all
the government and private health facilities,” he said.
Punjab Healthcare Commission Spokesman Javed Pasha said
that the commission was working on ensuring the quality at the
diagnostic labs. “This is true that many of these laboratories don’t
meet the prescribe standards and have unqualified people. The
commission had launched a campaign against them. So far the
commission has sealed 35,000 such clinics, labs and operation
theaters where unqualified people were running the affairs, and
quality was not maintained. Many of the diagnostic labs involved
in malpractices have been sealed,” he added.
To a question about issuing fake reports to the patients on purpose
Pasha said, “We have established a Complaint Center at PHC
office in Shaheen Complex. If anybody, a doctor or a patient has
any complaint about any healthcare providing facility, he/she
can file an application with us. The commission investigates the
matter and we have our court which even awards punishment to
those involved in malpractices. All those who had paid for getting
a clean reports thought they were healthy should write to us. We
will investigate their complaints and if anybody is found guilty
will be punished in accordace with the law,” he added.
Pasha said that the commission has also fined Rs 150 million
to those health practitioners who do not follow the Standard
Operating Procedures (SOPs) to run clinics, labs or operation

“Things cannot be changed overnight, however, we are working
on ensuring the quality healthcare service delivery at all public

Spider-shaped robot copies the movement of
human organ
The students at the University of Engineering & Technology
(UET) Lahore have developed a new kind of robot as part of their
research about the working of the joints of the human organs.
The robot is very similar to a spider and can also be used for
the military applications such as the detection of the underground
mines. It is a one-of-its-kind robot with six legs, and it can walk
on almost any kind of surface.
The primary purpose of this fantastic device is to serve as a bionic
robot for the replacement of the human organs. A bionic robot is
an object which features normal biological capability enhanced
by the electronics.
It is a nature-inspired machine, designed to copy the movement of
the human organs such as arm movements, leg movements, etc.
“In the future, we would be able to replicate the joints in the human
body,” said Asfandyar, a student of mechanical engineering at
UET Lahore.
Another idea behind the creation of this object is to empower the
soldiers to carry this sleek robot anywhere. If a soldier takes this
robot to the ground, it will detect the spot of the underground

mines.
The device is not revealed to the public yet and is under
development on the university and departmental level. The cost
for the creation of this robot is Rs. 50,000.
Specifications of the spider-shaped robot
The components used in this spider-shaped robot are imported
after the 3D printing. Parts Include the ultrasonic sensors, which
perform the ultrasonic imaging and thermal imaging. It uses
a small electronic circuit which is used to receive, transmit or
transceive radio waves and is also known as RF module. There
is a metal detector for the detection of the underground mines in
the military.
It features four wheels and is powered by two small batteries. On
this small scale, for demo purpose, the cost for the creation of this
robot is Rs. 20,000.
A student from the electronics department of the Government
College of Technology for Women (GCTW) has developed a car
robot for the detection of the metals and the underground mines.
It detects the metal in its range of 6 to 7 feet.
The technology could be used at the walkthrough gates for
enhanced security system and the detection of the metals. This car
robot would be helpful in reducing the crime rate in the country. It
could also be used at the border crossings.
The device is controlled by the smartphone using an Android
app. User can control its direction from left to right and back to
forward.
When it detects a metal in its range, it alerts everyone by a buzzer
and indicator LED featured in it. The amazing robot has not
been yet introduced on the commercial level, and is still under
development.

better service delivery as well as the collection of receivables.
Privatization of energy sector would lure local and foreign direct
investment in the energy sector; introduce efficient, reliable,
greener and sustainable new technologies.
Electricity is now of the major problem that Pakistan is facing
from last eight years. It is the necessity of every human life.
Energy is the most important sources for economic growth of a
country. Unfortunately, Pakistan has to face a major energy crisis
in Natural Gas, Power and Oil. This would affect the economy
of Pakistan (which is already in complexity). The high cost of
the import of Oil, Construction of Big Dams, uncertain regional
security environment attached with the lack of national agreement
to build dams are likely to delay quick resolution of energy crises.
This energy deficit will lead to inflation. Similarly, subsidies of
billions of rupees have to be doped out “National Electric Utility
Provider” to bear loses.
Two key elements of a possible solution are: categorical change
in the pattern of energy consumption and change in lifestyles.
The current energy consumption trends in Pakistan are extremely
inefficient, whether it be in the domestic, industrial, trade or
commercial sectors.
Energy Consumption Pattern
With minimal effort, well over ten per cent of national electricity
can be saved by applying only the first level of energy conservation
that is a change in attitude. It is simple, instant and effective and
all it requires is a stop to using energy unnecessarily.

Change The Lifestyle
The second part of the solution is a change in lifestyles. It would
begin with the acknowledgement that the country is facing a
national disaster and every citizen has to pitch in to overcome it.
The nation has to draw a clear line between necessities (lighting,
fans, TVs, computers, etc) and luxuries (air conditioners,
microwaves, etc). There is not enough electricity to meet both
requirements.
We will have to compromise on luxurious lifestyles in order
to meet the necessities. Markets and commercial places can
substantially reduce their power consumption by changing their
working hours. An early start and early end to capitalize on
daylight as much as possible should be recommended rather than
having opening hours from afternoon until late at night. Any such
policy should be made at the highest level, and its implementation
should also begin there because charity starts at home. Although
there are many proposed solution of the energy crisis in Pakistan

Amazing Tech

Now Shoes will Automatically
Lace themselves
Nike has introduced a new kind of shoes, which come
with self-lacing technology. It is surprising at the same
time impressive. There is a smart computerized chip
featured in the shoes that sensors your heels. When
someone wears the shoes, the heels hit the sensors in the
shoes and the shoe automatically tightens itself.
The self-lacing shoes by Nike are designed by Tinker
Hatfield, an American shoe designer at Nike. He has
designed some of the most modern athletic shoes for the
company, and the self-lacing shoe is just another example of that.
These self-lacing shoes are named as Hyper Adapt 1.0. There are two buttons on the right side of the shoes to tighten and loosen which
you can press until the shoes adjust according to the size of your foot.
Hyper Adapt 1.0 shoes will be available in the market in June 2016.

financial institution keep losing money deliberately?
There is a catch. I will try to put before you a couple of situations
for making things a bit clearer for new customers.
For a bank, plastic money is categorized into 'unsecured' and
'secured' depending upon the type of collateral. Unsecured credit
cards are offered to public without obtaining any security whereas
the secured credit cards are usually offered to bigger corporate
clients against their loan line. Moreover, different financial
institutions offer varying number of cards which are named as
Visa, Master, Union, American Express, etc.
A credit card is a product for any bank and just like any other
organisation their sales teams have pressure to sell more products.
Therefore, it is always a pitch from their side. So it happens this
way that one beautiful morning, you get a call from a banking
agent who must have gotten hold of your number from a cafe
or a place where you had dropped your mobile number while
purchasing something. It is very likely that agent must have
had the list from another bank where you maintain your salary
account, or, your bank is calling you because you have somehow
established a good history with them.
The agent, most of the times a female, grabs your attention when
www.moremag.pk
she joyously reveals that you are among few of the privileged
customers of the bank who are entitled to enjoy a 'free credit card.'
Yes, 'free' is what we keep looking for in Pakistan. The marketers
in this country exploit well the consumer psyche and sell almost
anything by calling it a Free.
At this moment, the agent starts explaining the most promising
loan facility without any charges. She only has to get a halfhearted nod from you, and the next thing would be a permission
for an appointment for the product demo. Once you permit, the
very next day you find a guy in your office and with his 'oily
tongue' he convinces you to be a part of the exclusive club
where other members are enjoying the experience of their lives
by getting so many discounts on various products through this
magical credit card.
“
For credit card bills he has
another option, pay the
minimum amount and forget
about the rest. This is the trap.
He ends up paying the markups
only, and it goes like this for a
couple of months before he is
declared a defaulter
“
W
ho does not know the credit card today? It is an
E-commerce era and paying online to stores cannot
be done without the tools like credit cards.
Scene 1 (Customer is overjoyed and accepts whatever agent
offers)
He entices customer by proposing to spend as much as he can and
pay later in full or partially through a very flexible payment plan.
He is skilled enough to read customer's mind and notice the
excitement on his face. This is the right moment when he brings
out a fancy form, fill in few details and takes customer's signature.
He promises to take care of every other thing and disappears.
Scene 2 ( Customer is a hard nut to crack)
The agent notices that all his efforts are not bringing results
because the customer is not showing interest in free offers and
big discounts. He starts reading another script and request him to
accept the offer as this would give him a chance to earn muchneeded commission for his little kids who are in school. The guy
would beg customer to let him earn the commission by accepting
the offer and also tells him a way out to deactivate the card later
if it is not required.

achieving their sales targets.
for the current month and the card can only be discontinued only
if the balance is '0'.
In most of the cases, the customer is likely to fall prey, one way
or other. Whether it is a temptation or a kind heart gesture for
helping the agent, the form gets signed.
The above customer had to generate the income for the bank
without purchasing anything. However, there is another kind of
customer who would select a couple of electronic items from the
brochures straight away, spends lavishly in the first month in hope
for some easy installment plan.
If the customer has not used the card, the first bill he receives will
only be service charges which would be Rs. 50 in most of the
cases. It has been observed to be a usual practice that customers
ignore such a petty bill with an idea of paying it next time. The
ignorant customer receives a bill of Rs. 650 next month, Rs.
50 services charges and a penalty of Rs. 600 for not paying the
service charges last month.
In a state of confusion, he calls up the help desk and asks about
the unwanted bill but the person on the other side of the phone
reveals that the bill amount would be doubled next month if it is
was not paid.
The depressed customer goes to the bank, joins a long queue and
only upon reaching the counter he comes to know that an extra Rs.
500 would be required for paying the bill in cash. To avoid cash
deposit penalty, a cross cheque is a solution, but the last deposit
date would not allow him to avail the easy option so the customer
would end up paying Rs. 1,150 against a meager bill of Rs. 50.
The furious customer decides to end the menace and call the
helpline for canceling the card but the representative explains his
inability because the customer has to pay Rs. 50 service charges
“
Let's say the customer earns a monthly salary of Rs. 50K and he
agree to a monthly payment plan of Rs. 10K. Things go right in
first few months unless his own monthly expense swells beyond
Rs. 40K. He has two options, either borrow money from someone
or use the available credit limit on the card for buying grocery
with a self-promise of paying back the additionally used limit in
the next month.
Here starts the bad days, next month brings more bill and, of
course, the ever-increasing expense goes higher.
For credit card bills he has another option, pay the minimum
amount and forget about the rest. This is the trap. He ends up
paying the markups only, and it goes like this for a couple of
months before he is declared a defaulter.
Soon as the stage approaches, the bank's recovery department
comes into action and spoils the whole experience with many
lessons to learn.
In some cases, customer and bank talk and reach an agreement
for the recovery of principal amount and the markup. However, in
many cases, the customer flees, and the bank put the unrecovered
amount in the non-performing loan. However, it is interesting to
know that bank is very seldom on the receiving end and recovers
the principal loan amount before such stage arrives, and the poor
customer only has to vanish for the markup amount.
I would not say keeping a credit card is a bad idea. However,
there is always a smart way to spend through your card. In my
upcoming article, I will try to explain few smart ways to use your
credit card.
‘Free’ is what we keep looking for in Pakistan. The marketers in this
country exploit well the consumer psyche and sell almost anything

In just a few weeks, the customer gets a thick envelope via courier
with a plastic credit card inside along with a number of brochures
highlighting some fantastic deals that he can enjoy by charging

Soon after the card is delivered, he gets a call from the bank
about an SMS service. The customer is told that he will get a text
message whenever he or anyone else use the card. It would be a
security alert feature and beneficial for keeping funds safe. Such
services are free for the first year only, but he opts it bearing in

The project of Dolphin Force is a collaboration of government of
Punjab and Turkish government in which latter has provided the
technical expertise and training whereas the former is responsible
for all the hardware & accessories, infrastructure, and human
resource.
The credit for completing the training process to the first batch
of squad goes to the SSP of Turk police, Mr. Murad, and his
Pakistani team comprising of 25 officials who did the job in
mere 120 days. These 25 master trainers are also responsible for
providing training to next 2,500 that are yet to be recruited.
In the first phase government of Punjab has allocated Rs. 5 billion
for the purchase of bikes, accessories and the salary of the squad
as well. The fund will also be used for the construction of Dolphin

meant for doing the VIP duties and mishandling the public.
Haider says it’s an era of specialized and technically skilled people,
and we can make our case that if a batch of 700 young people

the number of incidents in the city, then the entire police force
needs such training in the future. I am hopeful we will succeed,
and the government will realize the benefits of investment in this
department”.
Primary job of Dolphin
The primary function of dolphin force is to patrol the streets of
Lahore and pinpoint any threat for stopping it. They will act as
the first responders to any complaint. They will have to handover
the notorious element to the local police for further proceedings.
It is also the job of Dolphin squad to help people and become
friendlier with them. They can not use their guns other than selfdefense. Raiding a spot would always be the primary task of
local police and no such activity has been included in dolphin’s
chartered of duties.
Since Dolphin has to patrol, they have been allotted unlimited
patrol but for keeping an eye on consumption, trackers are
being installed, and so far 225 bikes have been come under the
monitoring system.
For the maintenance and repair work of bikes, Honda is opening
its state of the art workshop in the city.
DIG Operation Lahore, Haider Ashraf
“Unlike ordinary police
constable, a dolphin squad member is more educated and better
skilled. It is a project every close to our hearts, and we are doing
all efforts for making it a successful model”, added Ashraf.

Huawei brings on board Advance Telecom as

The Chinese smartphone manufacturer,
Huawei Pakistan has officially announced the
distribution partnership with Advance Telecom,
another leading mobile phone distributor in the
country. With Advance Telecom on board, the
total number of distributors reaches to three

This major business decision was very much
expected after Samsung recently announced
its 3rd partner Airlink Pvt Ltd, who is also the
distributor of Huawei Pakistan as of yet.
In recent months, Huawei has successfully snatched the market
share in the country owing to an enormous demand of smartphones
in Pakistan after the inception of 3G and 4G technology. 2015
witnessed a 1% increase in smartphone demand every month
which is diluting the presence of feature phones in the country on
a gradual basis.
Samsung Pakistan still holds the leading position when it comes
to the smartphone market and range of products whereas, Huawei
is catching up pretty fast, particularly in the middle and lower
price range.
Huawei Pakistan hopes to accelerate further by putting some extra
burden on the pocket of Advance Telecom and using stronger
sales network of the latter which it built over a period of more
than a decade.

The MD of Huawei devices in Pakistan – Mr.

to collaborate with a strong distribution team
like Advance Telecom, which will ensure
an extensive outreach of Huawei products
and significantly enhance the customer

Mobile App Awards 2016
2016 Mobile App Awards have been
dedicated to the mobile apps for the
special people in Pakistan – Persons with
Disabilities. This annual award is an effort
from various stakeholders, including the
PTA and telcos, to polish and promote
the local talent in the era of 3G and 4G
and for producing the local content at the
same time.
The theme for 2016 mobile app awards is
to help the special people in Pakistan and
enable them to take advantages of what
technology offers today.
As per independent International sources,
10 to 15% of Pakistan’s population
consists of Persons with Disabilities;
depicting approximately 20 to 30 million
people face some form of disability.
“It is very unfortunate that all UN conventions talk about Human
Rights, but there is no national body in Pakistan that takes into
consideration matters revolving around people with disabilities.
The mobile app awards 2016 is therefore very crucial and
extremely timely initiative.”, commented DG Human Rights,
Ministry of Law and Justice, Mr. Hassan Mangi.
There is no policy in the country which is specifically designed
for the Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) in the IT and Telecom
sector. It was also highlighted during the event that took place in
Islamabad that upcoming IT policy has a dedicated portion for the
Persons With Disabilities so they could easily access the web with
the help of various apps and tools. In this regard, Ministry of IT is
also reshaping its website for making it friendlier with everyone.
Speaking at the launch ceremony, Dr. Syed Ismail Shah, Chairman
PTA said “I am hoping that there will be support for this cause
from all across Pakistan as work on accessibility does not stop
with mobile applications. There is so much more that can be
done in this field and it all begins with an understanding of the
needs of Persons with Disabilities.” He further said that when he
approached the MoS IT Honourable Anusha Rahman Khan for the
inclusion of PWDs in the upcoming IT policy, she immediately
agreed and instructed the relevant officers to include the PWDs as
a stakeholder group.

Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge was in demand last year, but the Korean company reportedly
couldn’t meet it. Therefore, it lost the window of opportunity. It had an adverse impact on
the sales and Samsung had to face the low profits throughout the year. In 2016, Samsung
introduced S7 a month early and the first quarter statistics are bringing good news for the
company. As per initial reports, worldwide sales are 20% higher this time.

New Lip-Reading technology will help solve crimes
captured on CCTV in future
A lip reading technology is developed in East Anglia, which in future, will help security agencies to know what a person is saying
even if the audio is not present. It will be used in CCTV cameras. Based on Artificial Intelligence, the technology reads lips by
detecting the particular movement of the lips.It can help solve crimes.
Previously, Lip-reading technology has been used to identify the words players have shouted in football matches. The technology is
not perfect yet; it is still under-development. It could be adapted for use for many purposes - for example, for people with hearing or
speech impairments.
Experts said that some sounds like “P” and “B” or “T” and “D” have normally been hard to pinpoint, but now, they can be identified
using the new lip-reading technology. The researchers did not announce when it will be available for use.

(0.55mm) which can be termed almost equal. The front of P9 carries an edge-to-edge display of 5.2 inches IPS-NEO LCD capacitive
multi-touch panel with a full HD resolution of (1920×1080) whereas the big one, P9 Plus, boasts 5.5 inch Super AMOLED display.
To protect the screen, there is a Corning Gorilla Glass 4 featured in this device.
P9 comes in Ceramic White, Haze Gold, Rose Gold, Titanium Grey, Mystic Silver, Prestige Gold colors whereas P9 Plus has limited
options to choose from Haze Gold, Quartz Grey and Ceramic White.
Battery and Processing
The P9 is also an upgrade in the battery. The smaller sibling
has a 3000mAh battery inside, but bigger brother P9 Plus with
3400mAh has more juice to take care of 5.5-inch display. By the
book, they should be able to accompany you for at least one and
half day considering the power saving mode that Huawei has
already introduced in its earlier models, should also be part of the
package.
Huawei P9 does with its own manufactured Kirin 955 Octacore
chipset — four 2.5GHz Cortex-A72 and four 1.8GHz Cortex-A53
cores — powered by blazing fast 3GB RAM, 32GB internal
memory for P9 and 4GB RAM and 64GB internal memory for
P9 Plus. Both of them can take advantage extended memory by
adding a MicroSD card of up to 128GB. The memory is enough
for storing songs, videos, documents, and other important files.
The GPU Mali-T880 MP4 means fast image processing.
Interestingly, the battery of Huawei P9-Plus is a fast-charging
battery.
This mammoth arrangement certainly hints towards a more brisk
handling of Android’s latest OS v6.0 (Marshmallow), which P9
houses on the top of hardware. We can expect that most of the
high-quality games and applications would run smoothly on P9.
Another interesting area is the processing of the phone which

Dual Camera arrangement, what is so different?
Back of P9 and P9 Plus is the area where Huawei has added more
spices. The stunning aluminum made rear holds the fingerprint
scanner which it seems to have adopted from recently launched
Mate 8 and a pair of 12 megapixels lenses, one of which uses the
color sensor and other one deals with the Black and White sensor.
Huawei has partnered with the German optics enterprise, Leica, to
bring two high-quality rear cameras in its latest P9 smartphones.
We have seen dual camera arrangement earlier in smartphones
for handling 3D snaps, but these are different in few aspects,
the important ones from the photography point of view. Frankly
speaking, they have been designed this way for becoming the
selling point for Huawei P9 and P9 Plus.
just a single click, because both come with GPS, A-GPS, BDS,
and GLONASS.
There is also a video editor and a photo editor app, with various
cool filters in both the smartphones.
It would be interesting to witness how Huawei market both the
flagships this time in Pakistan. Already Mate 8 is doing well in
the country which is very encouraging for the local Huawei team
which has swelled recently by with the addition of third selling
partner – Advance Telecom.
Huawei P9 is expected to be launched in Pakistan at the end of
this month.
Huawei Pakistan Team at the launch event of P9 in London
Huawei says this arrangement of twin camera is better for
absorbing 300% more light hence producing more detailed and
sharp photos which are 50% higher in contrast even under low
light conditions.
Although the newer smartphones like LG G5 and HTC One
M8 already offer dual-cameras, the function of dual-cameras in
Huawei P9 is entirely different from the rest.
The black and white camera doesn’t need RGB filter, and it
masters in B&W images which should look crisper and natural.
So the primary job is to help color sensor in producing more
detailed images.
In simple words, one camera is designed to capture the black-andwhite image in monochrome, while the other captures the scene
in typical Red, Green and Blue (RGB) format. The two distinct
images then combine to make a beautiful and attractive picture,
and this whole process is fully automated.
For best close-up shots, P9 has laser focus and two-tone flash
works like magic.
The endorsement from Leica should be enough to understand that
photography is what P9 is best at.
Additionally, the cameras of both P9 and P9 Plus come with autofocus, phase detection, dual-LED, geo-tagging, touch focus, face
detection, smile detection, panorama, and High Dynamic Range.
Other features
There are tons of other features as well, such as Active noise
cancellation, Accelerometer, gyro, proximity sensor, and compass.
For communication, the pair use GSM, 3G, and 4G LTE
technology. They support Single SIM as well as Dual SIM (NanoSIM, and dual-Standby). There is a dual-band Wi-Fi system with
built-in hotspot support, DLNA, and Wi-Fi Direct technology.
luetooth v4.1 with A2DP support and LE is also featured in the P9
and Plus version so you can share almost any file with your loved
ones instantly at the lightning fast speed. This devices support
3.5mm jack, NFC, USB Type-C 1.0 reversible connector.

Haier Esteem i90
Outshines in Many Ways
by More In House
Although, Haier Mobile is relatively a new entrant in Pakistani handset market but the Chinese manufacturer
is working hard on its product profile. Esteem i90 is the new smartphone which doesn’t fail to impress while
you hold it in your hand. It is a beautiful smartphone with some decent specs at an affordable price tag. Let’s
see briefly, what it offers.
Display
The screen size of this phone is 5.0-inch IPS
with sharp HD 16M colors and extra brightness
features. It also supports MiraVision, which
is a set of engines to enhance display picture
quality. The resolution of the screen is
1280x720 pixels with a refresh rate of 58.29
Hz, which is ideal for watching videos, photos,
etc. Display density is extra high with 320 dpi.
Memory and Processor
Esteem i90 comes with a high-quality RAM
of 3GB, which never gets full and ensures that
you keep on working on your files smoothly.
The internal memory of this phone is 16GB, of
which 10.22 GB is usable. You can also add a
MicroSD card of up to 64 GB. The phone runs
on 64 Bit 1.3 GHz powerful Cortex-A53 quadcore processor with Android V5.1 (Lollipop)
on the top. Chipset used inside Esteem i90 is
Mediatek MT6753. It is the same chipset that
was used in the powerful Infinix NOTE 2-LTE
and Lenovo A7010 and those who have used
these two smartphones would surely recall the
good memories.
Sensors
Sensors included in this smartphone are
Accelerometer, Proximity sensor, light sensor
and G-sensor. It lacks fingerprint sensor, which
is what most of the modern smartphones offer
these days

Camera
The auto-focus camera on the back of Esteem i90 is 13 MP
with the maximum picture resolution of 4160x3120 pixels.
It comes with CMOS technology. The camera captures with
an excellent result even in the darkest environment because
the LED flash installed in this smartphone is very sharp. It
supports stereo preview, geo-tagging, HDR, Panorama, antiflicker, white balance and touch-focus.
The advanced wrinkle-removal feature makes it possible to
remove automatically wrinkles from the pictures without the
loss of natural view. Gesture capturing mode captures the
photos instantly when the phone detects any gesture.
There is also a Face beauty option, which if enabled, makes
the beauty of the face more attractive and bright.
Another cool feature of the camera app of Haier Esteem i90 is
that it lets you track any object. Just select any object on the
camera view screen and the camera will automatically show a
square bracket around it and will keep monitoring the moving
object. Night mode works as it is supposed to. However, it
needs a firm hand or else the photos will be shaky.
Front camera of Esteem i90 is 8 MP and has a max picture size
of 3264x2448. It supports continuous Autofocus. In this price
range, this front camera is perfect for selfie lovers.
Connectivity
Haier Esteem i90 is a dual-SIM smartphone with the support
of Micro-SIM. It communicates using 2G, 3G, and 4G LTE
technologies. By the book, internet speed on LTE is 150Mbps on
downloading while the uploading speed of this phone is 50Mbps
but on the ground, it all depends on the network, conditions, and
many other factors. In Pakistan, such a speed is a dream.
Battery
Esteem i90 features a powerful Li-Ion 2050 mAh battery with the
talk time of 20h and standby timing of one month, meaning you
do not have to recharge your phone for one month once it is fully
charged and is kept in standby mode. It is a perfect battery for the
phone of this screen size. We hardly get the phones with standby
timings of up to one month.
The speed on Wi-Fi is also very fast, but sometimes the signals
drop if your room has high walls, once again, the environment has
to play its role for a smooth ride.
If you want to get the most out of the battery of i90, turn on the
Battery Saver, which is pre-installed in the phone and dramatically
enhances the battery timing.
Other communication modes that are used by this smartphone
are Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n, hotspot, DLNA, GPRS/EDGE, Bluetooth
v4.1 A2DP, USB, GPS, and A-GPS.
Unfortunately, fast-charging and wireless charging is not supported;
this phone takes more than two hours to get fully charged, which is a
bit of disappointment when other manufacturers are offering it.
Sound
Gaming Experience
Haier Esteem i90 plays most of the traditional and HD quality
games without any hanging issue; the performance of this
smartphone was great when we tested it in a multiplayer car
racing game, the tilt function is also very accurate and gives you
an entirely enjoyable gaming experience.
The company claims that this smartphone gives you highest
quality music experience, but during our tests we could not find it
a product selling feature.
Haier Esteem i90 can play MP3, WAV, eAAC+, Flac, and
MP4/H.264 files. You can plug in your earphone in its 3.5mm
jack. Thankfully, the FM radio of this phone comes with built-in
RDS technology. You can also record the audio directly from the
FM.
The games which are pre-installed in this phone are Asphalt Nitro,
Assassin’s Creed 3, Motocross Extreme, and Spider-Man Ultimate
Power, To download more, you can always visit the Google Play
Store.
Extra Features
Other features of Haier Esteem i90 are Photo/video editor, Document viewer, email, Printing, SNS integration and Cast
Screen. The pre-installed apps of this phone are Chrome, Drive, Facebook, Skype, Gmail, Twitter, Facebook Messenger,
Viber, and WhatsApp.

Huawei has partnered with German optics enterprise, Leica to
bring two high-quality cameras in its latest P9 smartphone.
Interestingly, the dual cameras in P9 are not created for
capturing separate images, but for creating one image with

captures the scene in the monochrome format while the
other captures in the standard RGB format. The two distinct
images then combine to create a single HD picture, and this
whole process is fully automated. For managing this and other

memory. There is also a flavour of 4GB RAM in P9-Plus, but it
is not yet confirmed if it will arrive in Pakistan. The display size
is 5.2-inch, similar to P8, with the resolution of 1920x1080
pixels, fueled by 3000mAh powerful battery, which is larger
than the 2680mAh which was featured in the P8. Huawei P9
