Imidan® Remains Important Pest Management Tool Plan to Rotate
MAY 2012 Imidan® Remains Important Pest Management Tool An old adage states that a carpenter is only as good as his tools. The same could be said for fruit growers, especially when it comes to controlling the multitude of insect pests intent on destroying their high-value crops. Producers can continue to rely on one proven product – Imidan® insecticide from Gowan Company. A Grower Standard in Southern Fruit Crops As other broad-spectrum insecticides have left the market, Imidan has become a foundation insecticide for fruit growers from coast to coast. In Florida, Jim Snively of Southern Gardens Citrus in Clewiston related how Imidan plays a key role in controlling the Asian citrus psyllid, one of the primary vectors of the highly destructive bacterial disease called citrus greening. “When you’re dealing with Huaglongbing, or citrus greening, it’s absolutely essential to get good vector control,” Snively said. “Imidan provides excellent control of Asian citrus psyllid as well as rust mite, root weevil and little leaf notcher. Plus, its seven-day pre-harvest interval and short worker re-entry interval give us the flexibility we need for fall applications just prior to harvest.” Snively added that Florida growers have organized Citrus Health Management Areas (CHMA) to deal more effectively with disease and insect issues. “While we manage approximately 16,000 acres of citrus here at Southern Gardens Citrus, our CHMA covers about 40,000 acres. So when it’s time to apply Imidan, all the growers in this area band together to coordinate their sprays during a one- to two-week window. After all, it doesn’t do much good for you to spray your groves if your neighbor isn’t doing his part to control the problem.” Plan to Rotate with Delegate® WG Insecticide June flush is a watershed in citrus grove management. What we do now impacts our ability to control pests — and, thus, two potentially devastating diseases — in our groves not only for the rest of the season, but also potentially for years to come. This is the point when we can choose to throw in the big grenade to destroy every bug or target damaging pests with a selective insecticide that preserves our opportunity to rotate chemistries and hold on to every chemical play in our book. The latter requires more deliberation, more management, but then issues of survival generally do. Fortunately, the easy answer in June is Delegate® WG insecticide. Here’s why: • Delegate is highly effective against citrus leafminer (CLM), Asian citrus psyllid (ACP) and Diaprepes abbreviatus, commonly known as root weevil. Controlling CLM and ACP now reduces the opportunity for those vectors to infect groves with canker and greening disease. • As a Group 5 chemistry, it holds a unique spot in that growers who apply Delegate still can rotate into any other ACP material without building resistance. • Most beneficial insects are preserved when this green chemistry is applied. Delegate preserves those essential partners in the battle against citrus greening and canker — most particularly the beneficial wasp, Tamarixia radiate. • Grove management isn’t interrupted because Delegate has a four-hour re-entry and one-day preharvest interval. • Japan has established maximum residue levels (MRLs) for spinetoram, the active ingredient in Delegate® WG and Radiant® SC insecticides. The establishment of these MRLs enables customers of Dow AgroSciences to supply food to the third-largest importer of agricultural products in the world.
