nother year...another catalog...and what a year it has been, full of
challenges from the world of wine and the world in general!
Fortunately for us at Calvert Woodley and for you, our loyal
customers, we have the knowledge, expertise, resources, relationships
and personnel to persevere and continue to bring you outstanding
values and selections on wine and spirits from the world over.
Something new you’ll notice this year is a number of “Staff
Selections.” These are wines that have been tasted and retasted by
our wine staff and chosen for quality and value. Many of them were
either discovered on a buying trip or from a wine sent to us by one
of our many suppliers around the world. These “Staff Selections”
represent some of the best values in this catalog and we hope you
will give them a try...put together a sampler case for an additional
discount.
We still have a great selection of 2005 Bordeaux for less than $30...
knowing how great this vintage is, we went back to all our Bordeaux
suppliers and cleaned them out of all they had left of the wines we
were following plus some new ones we were surprised to find. As you
already know, you can’t go wrong with 2005 Bordeaux!
Speaking of Bordeaux, please check out our surprisingly deep
selection of the superb 2000 vintage. Although quantities may be
limited on a few, there are many bargains to be had in this hard to
find vintage.
Special mention has to be made of one of our longest standing
relationships...the 35 year association with The Wine Trust which
began in 1973 when Richard Bakal was introduced to Ed Sands by a
mutual friend. Richard was not in the wine trade at the time, but
was desirous of getting involved. Ed gave him a few pointers and the
rest is history...one of the finest collections of wine in the world...
purchased en primeur and cellared until mature before being offered
for sale (see page 51). New with this year’s offering is the ability to
mix and match to get the lowest bottle price...please take advantage!
In addition to the above, the wines of Spain, Italy, South America,
Australia and from France - Alsace, Rhone, Burgundy, the South,
and of course America’s own California, Washington and Oregon all
continue to improve and provide us with exciting wines and new
discoveries.
Once again, we would like to acknowledge Tom McKnew, our
longtime Wine Manager, for his invaluable contribution to not only
this catalog but our wine business in general. In addition, we would
like to thank William Holby for tirelessly and quite capably assisting
with all aspects of the catalog. We are also pleased with the return of
an old friend and colleague, Maria Rios, without whom this project
could not have come to fruition. As always, Kathy Myrick is our
graphic designer and Kathy and Rusty Coolidge are our printers...

Woodley that offers excellent
value in a reasonably priced Pinot
Noir. Medium ruby in color, it offers
aromas of ripe plums, sweet spices
and flowers. There is a hint of Bing
cherry in the aftertaste that merges
nicely with a bit earth and dried
herbs. We especially enjoyed the
creamy-textured and supple finish
that makes this a graceful wine. Drink
it with salmon, duck and most other
poultry dishes.

of a new wave of wines from this previously
untapped region. Just 15 miles from the
Pacific, coastal winds keep the grapes cool and
dry in the summer allowing them to retain acidity while ripening fully. On the palate, subtle
grapefruit and apple flavors are rounded out by
hints of lemon and grass. More elegant than
many new world Sauvignon Blancs, this is a
good aperitif wine, as well as a wonderful
match for light fish and chicken dishes.

In the province of Valladolid around the town of La Seca lie the Rueda vineyards
of Santamaria. The fruit from 50 acres of Verdejo vines of between 8 and 30

When we break through our Gamay 2008, first of
all we see that the berries’ skin is thick, which is a
good sign. Over the days to come, depending on the
sun, this will provide us with excellent potential in
terms of anthocyanins and tannins, which lead to
beautiful colours and give the wine its unctuousness
and structure.
The best wines from the man who is not
only known as “The King of Beaujolais”
but as one of the finest winemakers in the
world!
A good grain and a great elegant flavour can
already be seen in the ripest berries, however, the
pips still retain their lemon-yellow colour and we’re
going to have to wait for them to turn a more amber-like colour,
a sign of good phenolic maturity.
Georges Duboeuf’s wines always represent great value and we are proud to have
represented him and his wines for almost
20 years!
As of now, each day and hour that passes is important to the wine
grower, who has to decide when to harvest each of their fields.
A great deal of care, intuition and precision is required to set the
harvesters off at the right place at the right time.
Quantity forecasts are well below last year.
The harvest is expected to reach its peak around September 25th
and to finish during the first few days of October. Thus, it is likely
that the amount of Primeurs available will be limited and perhaps
below the level of demand.

Since 1985 I have had the great pleasure of
developing close friendships with a handful of
dedicated winemakers in the western Rhone Valley
microclimate of Nimes. These wholeheartedly devoted
families of vignerons were willing to take the
necessary risks to make wines of very special
character. We began by identifying the vineyard
blocks at their properties with the greatest potential
to produce
world-class wines. Severe crop
thinning, leaf pulling and hand
harvesting were employed to help
shape the style of wines we
searched for. I am very enthusiastic
to share with you a few of these
wines, and hope that you’ll find the
same pleasure I have found in this
pursuit of excellence.

Jean-Francois & Nancy Fayel proprietors. A fabulous example of what is possible when a true effort is made. Normally I
find many Viogniers lacking in freshness, fragrance and substance - this is surely not the case here. This wine exhibits
exotic tropical fruits and real concentration on the palette. Low-yields for sure, and complimented with barrel
fermentation on the lees contribute to making this wine special.

Jean-Francois really dedicated himself to these 30 year-old vineyard blocks of Cabernet by starting in January with
eliminating any excessive canes that would promote too much fruit production. The results have been great as these
vines produce roughly 7 clusters per plant, which shows when tasting this saturated and complex red wine.
Cyril Mares proprietor. This estate has been a leader in the region and Cyril Mares has taken Bressades to even great
heights. This exemplary white wine demonstrates how good and delicious this Rhone blend can be. Tiny quantities of
low-yielding Viognier and Roussanne are vinified with great care and passion and express incredible florals and beautiful
balance. This wine is vinified in barrel and is bottled unfiltered.
This wine soars from the glass with very deep notes of Asian spices and luxuriously complex dark fruits. Roughly 75%
of this blend is old-vines Cabernet Sauvignon, which is kept in barrel 17 months. The Syrah vines are slightly older and
contribute a plush texture and elegance to the final blend. I have drunk these wines from my cellar recently from the
1988 vintage, which were quite amazing and beautifully fresh.
Sylvia & Francois Cornut proprietors. This domaine is brilliantly run by a loving couple and produces wines that express
their owner’s dedication and passion. 2005 Mas de Guiot cuvee Numa is a bottling of pure Syrah and made from vines
older than 50 years. This wine is named after Sylvia and Francois’s oldest son and is a monumental example of what is
possible when all sacrifices are made. The overall profile of this pure Syrah is quickly seen when poured into the glass.
Rather thick in texture and black in color, deeply spiced and very long on the palette are a few of my notes. Enjoy!
This wine was named after my son Alex Kacher, and is made from 75% old-vines Syrah and 25% old-vines Cabernet
Sauvignon. This loving effort was to craft a wine of immense personality and character. When
tasting you will see a fabulously dark robe and viscous texture, on the palette this wine attacks your
senses with powerful fruit and very deep structure. I am hopeful this wine will age more than 25
years. We are proud to offer this wine to our CW customers.

“1er Cru” Cuvee Arthur GIRARD
T
his benefactor bequeathed a part of his property to the
Hospices de Beaune in 1936. The Arthur Girard is a
blend of Les Peuillets and Les Marconnets Premiers crus
and is one of 27 red Hospices de Beaune cuvees.
Great aromatics of dark berries and a subtle earthiness greet the nose. Upon first sip there is still
some of the raciness of youth but it doesn’t belie
what this wine will become as it continues to mature
over the next 5-7 years. After decanting, the youth
becomes a more mature young adult and there are
notes of fat ripe berries that are upfront, a more distinctive essence of terroir and subtle hints of bittersweet chocolate rise at midpalate and the finish is
long and smooth. Further maturity will bring an even
silkier finish.

Montagny. Its rolling folds and hills are ideal for
grape vines to receive maximum sun exposure.
Devoted to 100% Chardonnay production,
Montagny makes some of the world’s best
uninhibited expressions of this noblest of white
grapes.
Louis Latour’s Premier Cru bottling from “La
Grande Roche” vineyard is one of the best values
for Burgundy year after year. Gold in color with
green hues, rich aromas of cut hay, almonds
and hazelnuts are followed by a lively and elegant
palate. The wine never touches oak allowing the
limestone, chalk, and clay soil to come to the
surface in a complex, clear, tasting expression of
pure Chardonnay.

Gigondas Futs Neufs, which is one of the

few cuvees Corcia ages in new oak. This wine has
actually benefited from it, as it seems to have
much more concentration than the other cuvees
and is not overburdened by the wood treatment.
This deep, rich wine shows notes of black
raspberry and cherry fruit intermixed with a hint of
mineral and toast. It should drink well for a decade
or more. These are the personal selections of
Burgundy wine broker Alain Corcia. All of the
wines are blends from top estates put together
by Corcia, an accomplished taster as well as
blender, and then aged either in foudres or in
smaller barriques and bottled with very little

Michel Rolland has been consulting here for many
years with the results clearly showing in the
exceptional 2000 vintage. We were lucky enough
to recently procure out more of this exceptional
bottling directly from Bordeaux and cannot recommend it too highly! Simply put, this wine is a
gorgeous drink right now. There is a complex
and aromatic nose that features cedar, blackcurrant and sweet spices. Impeccably balanced and
with a silky texture, this wine can do no wrong.

his Chateau sits in the northern end of the
Medoc neighbored by Chateau Potensac
and Chateau Latour de By. What we like most
about this wine is the depth and complexity
of flavor and the shear intensity of sweet
blackcurrant fruit. This wine exhibits power
and polish at the same time.

vintage, the 2005 Haut-Canteloup
possesses a dense ruby/purple color in
addition to a sweet bouquet of black
currants, licorice, and spice. Pure and
medium-bodied with excellent fruit
concentration and precision, it will drink

T
hough Bordeaux has always been famous
for its red wines, any excitement
surrounding the 2007 vintage is in the whites.
As always, the dry wines made by Denis
Dubourdieu have been hailed as some of the
best. Although the Chateau Reynon would
probably be considered his “everyday” white,
it is far from mundane even in an average
vintage. With the pedigree of the 2007, we
were more than excited to try the wine as
soon as it arrived. Classic Sauvignon Blanc
flavors of citrus fruit zip across the palate
and hints of tropical fruits like papaya and
mango can be tasted on the finish.

n the occasion of the
reclassification of the Saint Emilion
chateaux (in September 2006), Chateau Pavie
Macquin was promoted to the prestigious
level of Premier Grand Cru Classé. They
currently are producing some of the best
wine in all of Saint-Emilion. However, in
addition to a superb red they also make an
excellent dry rosé.
The appearance is a light translucent
crimson. Aromatics of melon and a soft
suggestion of rose petals rise from the
glass. The wine is fruit forward, bright
and clean with a fine crisp and refreshing
finish that is slightly more complex than
most roses – perhaps due to the
weightier implications of Bordeaux wines
and the Merlot/Cabernet Franc grapes
used to make this wine.

T
he estate of Château du Cros constitutes 90
hectares overlapping the communes of Loupiac
and Sainte-Croix-du-Mont. For those of you not
familiar with appellation of Loupiac, it sits very
close to Sauternes and can closely resemble the
very fine sweet wine that is made there.
We tasted the 1997 vintage earlier this year
when Catherine D’Halluin, from Chateau Clos
Bourbon, flew in from Bordeaux for a Calvert
Woodley wine dinner. The 1997 Chateau du Cros,
made by her father, Michel Boyer, was served
at the end of the dinner and was a smashing
success. We bought all we could get from them.
The 1997 is a wine that is drinking at its
apogee right now. There is plenty of botrytis
that gives the wine wonderfully oily texture and
exotic nose. The flavors are of apricot, peach and
coconut. The finish is thick, round and honeyed.
