The Official Newsletter of the Famous Maroon Band
The Famous Maroon Band at Mississippi State
University has one of the oldest traditions in the
Southeast and has been a significant part of the
Mississippi State family for more than one hundred
and ten years.
Directors Desk
Greetings from the Band Hall!
We hope that your summer is going well and that you are getting excited about the 2015 football season! Believe it
or not, kickoff for our first game against USM is just a few weeks away.
2015 Halftime Shows
Thanks to the good work of our student show selection committee, we have some great shows planned for this
fall. Our first show is a “funk” show, which will feature Funkytown, Brick House, Superstition, Play That Funky
Music, and Uptown Funk. Our second show will feature music from some of the more recent “mouse studio”
movies including Tangled, Frozen, Big Hero 6, and Wreck It Ralph. We will also perform our annual patriotic
show and homecoming show as well as a special rock show for our Marching Honor Band in September (KISS,
Green Day).
2015 Special Events
Our Marching Honor Band is scheduled for September 19th (vs. Northwestern State). Be sure to tell your friends at
home about this and encourage them to apply. Details will be posted on our website soon. We will host our annual
Parent Day and Alumni Band on October 17th (vs. Louisiana Tech). This continues to be one of the highlights of
each season with over 700 parents, family members, and alumni attending. More information will be available
closer to the event.
Band Camp
Band camp is our most important week of the year, and attendance is required. We will work hard during this
week, but we will have some fun as well. Please come expecting to meet many new faces and be ready to work. We
all know that it will be hot in August, so please prepare yourselves accordingly this summer by spending some time
outside. This preparation will help to make our camp positive and productive.
Class Registration/Membership
Everyone should be registered for marching band (MU 2511). If you have not yet added the class, please do so as
soon as possible so that we can make appropriate preparations for you at band camp. If you have received this
newsletter, then you are on our office roster, but that doesn’t mean you are registered for the class. Please check
and let us know if your plans have changed so that we can make adjustments in our plans for the season.
There is a lot of important information in this newsletter, so please read it very carefully. Band camp check-in,
dorm check-in and the summer uniform information are a few of the more important items that need your
attention. We will also begin to communicate with you through your msstate.edu email account, so please check
that account frequently for additional information.
Enjoy the rest of your summer, and Hail State!!

Lance, Dr. Taylor, and Dr. Aarhus

IMPORTANT NOTES TO REMEMBER
UNIFORM CHECK OUT: Only one date remains for early uniform check out. The final early check out day will be on July 10th from 1:00 – 4:00pm. Only wind and
percussion members can check out their uniform early (NO GUARD). Early check out of your uniform will GREATLY reduce your registration time during band camp;
however, you must still attend camp registration even if you checkout your uniform early. Also, you must be registered for Marching Band to check out your
uniform early. All other uniforms and additional items will be issued during band camp registration and throughout the camp week. Everyone must try on his/her uniform.
Uniforms will be altered as needed. We have secured the services of a seamstress to handle our alterations.
FEES: The band fee is $70.00. This amount will be added to your student account.
SHOES: You must have BLACK, smooth, matte finish band shoes and LONG BLACK socks for performances (NO short or ankle length socks). A band shoe supplier will
be available to fit you on Wednesday, August 12th, during camp if you need shoes. Shoes will be $45.00 and must be paid to the shoe supplier at the time of fitting. CASH OR
MONEY ORDER ONLY! NO PERSONAL CHECKS or CREDIT/DEBIT CARDS!
ALL instruments (piccolos, too) must have a lyre and flip folder with 20+ pages. We will provide lyres for school owned mellophones, baritones, and tenor saxes.
LOCKERS: We have lockers available for secure storage of instruments. All students using a university-owned instrument will be issued a locker assigned to that particular
instrument. Students using university-owned equipment are required to use the locker and are responsible for major/minor repairs and theft when the instrument is in their
care. Lockers for personal instruments will be issued to the membership by seniority. There is a $5.00 fee for any locker usage, including school-owned instruments. All
equipment must be returned at the close of the season. If you wish to store your instrument in the band hall, you must have a locker.
RESPONSIBILITY: Equipment and uniforms not returned will be charged to your student account and a hold will be placed on your records until the equipment is
returned or payment is received.
Recommended equipment:
•
Good quality clarinet reeds – Mitchell Lurie, Vandoren, e.g.
•

SUMMER UNIFORM INFORMATION
Beginning this year, the Famous Maroon Band will perform in a summer uniform for the start of the football season. In order to acquire
the correct shirt and shorts sizes for all band members, we ask that you complete a short, online Summer Uniform Survey at:
http://tinyurl.com/FMBsummeruniform
Please complete this survey no later than FRIDAY, JULY 10, 2015. It is imperative that every band member completes this survey so
that we can place our order in a timely manner.
Summer Uniform Shoes: Band members must wear primarily white athletic shoes with the summer uniform.
Sizing Charts
The Adidas polo shirts that we are using this year are men’s polo shirts. For men, the sizing should be fairly accurate as compared to other
polo shirts you may have. Women may find that the shirts run a little big. The polo shirts are available in sizes S, M, L, XL, 2X, 3X and
above.
The shorts we are using this year are uniform khaki shorts with pleats. You may wish to refer to the size chart below before making your
decision. Please note that the men’s shorts tend to run a little small, and the women’s shorts tend to be fairly true to size.

Tell Us Your Story...
Thoughts from FMB Members
“My favorite part about the Famous Maroon
Band is, well everything! From having a
band family to go to for support to traveling
to football games to performing in front of
thousands of people every Saturday to
playing in spring concerts; I love it all. The
2014-15 season was one the Famous
Maroon Band can put in the record books,
and I cannot wait to see what happens this
year!
“There’s nothing quite like the feeling of the
entire stadium cheering and ringing their
cowbells during our pregame show. Amazing!
- Kelly Olivieri, Feature Twirler, Senior
Public Relations major
-Christana Landress, Guard, Sophomore
Broadcast Meteorology major
“Whether it’s 1 year or 6 years, enjoy your time in the
Famous Maroon Band. You will never have the
opportunity after college to enjoy these times in the
stands at home games, away games, and bowl games
all over the country; not for free anyway. You will
meet some amazing people here too. #HailState
“Joining the Famous Maroon Band was hands down
one of the best decisions I made my freshman year.
With the new member day of band camp, band was
the first thing I did when I got to Starkville, and I
wouldn’t have it any other way. Over the past two
years, the FMB has given me best friends, role
models, and a new family. From Halloween costume
contests to marching down Main Street, U.S.A. on
New Year’s Day, the FMB does it right, and I’m so
blessed to be a part of it!”
- Ryan Smith, Oboe/Sousaphone, Senior Music
Education major
- Morgan Green, Clarinet, Junior Mechanical
Engineering major
Dorm Check-In Procedures
FRIDAY, AUGUST 7TH 2:00 – 5:00PM
NEW band members (freshman and transfer students): The Housing department has extended an opportunity for our new band
members to check into their dorm 1 DAY EARLIER than the rest of the students living on campus. Report to the front desk of your
assigned dorm with your MSU ID card to receive your key, paperwork, etc. If you choose not to take advantage of this early move in
date, you will need to follow the regular check in procedures on August 8th. This early move in opportunity should give our new
members ample time on Saturday morning to check in at the band hall before 11:00am for Pre-School Band Camp. Remember, we
will begin our general meeting with all new band members at 2:00pm on Saturday, August 8th.
Drumline & Leadership Dorm Check-In Procedures
MONDAY, AUGUST 3RD 2:00 – 5:00PM
PERCUSSION report to the front desk of your assigned dorm to receive your key, paperwork, etc.
WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 5TH 2:00 – 5:00PM
SQUAD LEADERS, DRUM MAJORS, KAPPA KAPPA PSI, and SOCIAL COMMITTEE report to the front desk of your dorm
to receive your key, paperwork, etc.
During Pre-School Band Camp, those students who live on campus should not drive to the
Band Hall. Leave your vehicle parked in your residence parking zone and walk or bike to the
Band Hall. Those students who live off campus should car pool as much as possible and plan to
park behind the MSU Student Health Center. Parking in the gravel lot beside the band hall
and across the street in the South Zone will be strictly prohibited.
