Directors Desk
Plans for the 2014 Famous Maroon Band are well underway! We are excited
about the many varied opportunities that we will have as the 2014-15 school
year develops. Another exciting season of Bulldog football includes seven
campus games, four pep band trips and our full band performance at T.S.U.N.
(Ole Miss).
Please read this newsletter as it contains lots of important information.
Everyone must attend camp! This newsletter also includes the performance
dates for all of the band program ensembles for the 2014-15 academic year.
Additional information will be available on our website and will be included in
our July newsletter.
Marching band is a class (MU 2511) as are all music ensembles. You are
required to register for the class in order to be included in our show design and
planning. This registration must be completed by the end of the June orientation
sessions in order to be placed on our roster.
The Wind Ensemble and Jazz Bands rehearse and perform in BOTH the Fall
and Spring semesters. Information about the chair placement auditions will be
available in July. Those of you who are required to audition or have expressed
an interest in auditioning for a position can find the audition material on the
band website in July. The placement auditions will be held on August 17, 18,
and 19, as we begin classes.
Meanwhile enjoy your many travels and activities this summer! We will see you
soon!

Important Marching Band Information
CLASS/LAB CONFLICTS:
Because we rehearse only 4-5 hours
a week, it is important that every
member be present for every
rehearsal. In recent years, we have
seen a surge in the number of class
conflicts, and that significantly
holds back the daily progress of the
band. While we do not expect you
to build your schedule completely
around the band, we have to trust
that everyone is making every effort
to avoid all class conflicts. We
expect you to place a high priority
on daily attendance. Since there are
multiple sections of most classes,
students should not have a regularly
scheduled class/lab conflict with
band rehearsals. 6:00 pm classes
should be avoided, if possible. In
cases where class conflicts are
unavoidable, they must be approved
by a director and may negatively
impact your band award or
performance position. In these
cases, they may not exceed 1
rehearsal per week. “Jobs” or
regularly scheduled meetings are
not considered class conflicts and
will not be excused.
MUSIC REHEARSAL: In order to
have additional rehearsal time for
music preparation, we will meet each
Tuesday at 4:30 pm early in the
semester for a music rehearsal and
sectional work.
INSTRUMENT: We will provide
piccolos, mellophones, baritones,
sousaphones, and tenor saxes. All
wind players must provide their own
mouthpieces, lyre, and flip folder (no
exceptions!). Piccolos must also have
a lyre (“Flutists Friend” works well).
For trombones, the bell clamp-on lyre,
“DEG HC250” (or similar), works
well. Lyres are provided for school
owned baritones, mellophones, and
tenor saxes. You will need lots of
extra pages in your flip folder (20+).
Please take care of these needs prior to
arriving at MSU by visiting a local
music store.
REHEARSAL ATTIRE: For all
rehearsals, please wear a T-Shirt,
shorts, socks, and athletic shoes.
Please do not wear flip-flops, sandals,
boots, high heels, dress shoes, hiking
boots, etc. for marching.
MARCHING UNIFORM SHOES:
The Famous Maroon Band will wear
BLACK, plain-toe, lace up band
shiny, patent leather shoes; only
smooth, matte finish is acceptable. No
“short” socks! Absolutely no tennis
shoes! A band shoe supplier will be
available to fit you during camp if
necessary. Shoes cost approximately
$42.00 and payment must be made to
the shoe company at the time of
ordering. Cash or money orders are
accepted. NO CHECKS OR CREDIT
CARDS.
FEES: A $70.00 Band Membership fee
will be added to your university
account to cover the purchase of a
Uniform Dri-Fit Supplement, t-shirt,
ball camp, dry cleaning of the uniform
3 times during the season, some meals
at camp, and a DVD with season
highlights.
PERCUSSION: All percussionists will
report to the band hall Tuesday, August
5th. The percussion instructor, Dr.
Jason Baker, may be contacted at
[email protected] with any
questions that you may have.
Percussionists should reserve 4:30 –
6:00pm each day for band. Section
rehearsals will be on Wednesday
immediately after band for one hour.
shoes and black crew length (or
longer) socks for performances. No

Dear New Members,
My name is Devin Dedeaux and I am the 2014-2015 President of the Epsilon Chapter of Kappa Kappa Psi. On
behalf of the brothers of our fraternity, I would like to welcome you to the Famous Maroon Band and also to our great
University. As brothers of Kappa Kappa Psi, our goal is to serve and contribute to the success of the band program.
Service is at the heart of our fraternity. We are always looking for those who are dedicated and have a passion for
service. During band camp, we will have many interest meetings that will allow you to talk to the brothers of our
fraternity face to face. This is an exciting year for the Epsilon chapter as we are planning to put in a bid to host our
fraternity’s upcoming District Leadership Conference here at Mississippi State. This would be the first time we have
ever hosted a district wide event here MSU. These are only small examples of what we have planned for the fall
semester. I hope you enjoy your summer and I look forward to meeting you at band camp.
Looking forward,
Devin Dedeaux
2014-2015 Epsilon President

DORM CHECK-IN
The regular move-in day for MSU dorm housing will be Saturday, August 9th. This
is also the day that all NEW band members, color guard, and feature twirlers will
report to camp. There will be time that day for new students to check in at the
band hall and then move into their dorm. Any percussionists and squad leaders
living in dorm housing will have an opportunity to check into their dorm prior to
the first day they report to the band hall. The procedures for check-in will be
established by the Housing Department and will be communicated to you in the
July newsletter and on the band website later in the summer.
THERE WILL BE NO EXCEPTIONS TO THE CHECK-IN PROCEDURE AS
OUTLINED BY THE HOUSING DEPARTMENT & THE BAND OFFICE.

Meet your 2014 Famous Maroon Band Drum Majors
Faith Smith
Brittany Carey
Hi FMB!
Hi guys!
I am so excited to be returning as one of your drum
majors for the 2014-2015 marching season! After
victories at the Egg Bowl and Liberty Bowl, this has
the potential to be a great year for football. A little
bit about me: I am a senior in computer engineering
from Collierville, TN and I play French horn. My
dream job is to become an Imagineer at Disney
World. I so look forward to meeting all our new
members at band camp in August, and I hope you
are all enjoying your summers. If any of you have
questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me.
Hail State!
I cannot describe how elated I am to be selected
as one of your 2014 drum majors for this season!
My name is Brittany Carey and I’m from Olive
Branch, MS. I’m majoring in Educational
Psychology as well as Spanish. Being able to serve
as one of the drum majors for this band is a huge
honor and I cannot wait to meet all of you! If you
need anything at all, do not hesitate to email me!
See y’all in August!
- Brittany Carey ([email protected])
- Faith Smith ([email protected])
* The July newsletter will feature drum majors Cooper Haywood and
Tarver Reeder
FMB Fun Fact
The section with the highest GPA of the 2013 FMB was
the French Horns/Mellophones, followed by the
Saxophones, and then the Baritones.

EARLY UNIFORM CHECK OUT...BEAT THE RUSH!
In an effort to help reduce your registration time during band camp, we are offering you an
opportunity to be fitted for your band uniform early. This opportunity is open to both NEW
and VETERAN students (winds and percussionists only – NO GUARD). The dates
available for early check out are:
June 10th, June 13th, June 17th, June 20th, June 24th, June 27th, and July 18th
1:00pm – 4:00pm
Many of these dates coincide with the second day of Freshman orientations, so we hope our
new students will take advantage of this opportunity. If you are unable to check out your
uniform early, you will be fitted for your uniform during band camp registration.
NOTE: If you check out your uniform early, you
are still required to check in at the band hall for
Band Camp on your designated registration day
(August 9 for NEW students, August 10 for
VETERAN students) to complete the rest of the
registration process (i.e. – check out instruments,
collect apparel, get music assignment, etc.)
