We often hear of living legends, but that is precisely what
Queen Elizabeth II has become. Britain’s longest reigning
Monarch has seen much change since succeeding her
father in 1952 and her glorious Coronation in 1953. Her
Coronation marked an important turning point for people
after the ravages of WWII. With all its pomp and ceremony
and the event being televised, people hailed a second
Elizabethan period. The Queen has been immortalised and
events in her life commemorated many times during her 60
year reign. Now Royal Doulton’s latest series of four portrait
figures take us on a trip down memory lane – from her time
as a young mechanic helping the war effort, to young mother
posing with her beloved corgis, to the Queen on one of her
famous walkabouts and finally a royal group sitting for official
photographs for her grandson, George’s christening; the baby
who one day will also succeed to the throne.

Prime Minister During Two Reigns
Despite huge fluctuations in his personal popularity
during his lifetime, today Winston Churchill is reverently
remembered as the hero who inspired a nation to stand up
against a seemingly unstoppable tyranny and one who led
them to victory.
For over half a century Churchill was at the forefront of
political life but this alone does not tell his story. Born into
the family of the Dukes of Marlborough, he saw action as a
young army officer, was a war correspondent and an author
as well. Seemingly retired into the wilderness by those
around him, Churchill once again rose to prominence in the
late 1930’s warning Britain of the dangers of Nazism and
the need for re-armament.
Although Churchill retired as Prime Minister in 1955 during
his second time in that office, he continued to be a member
of Parliament until his death in 1965, at which point the
Queen granted him a state funeral. Such was the esteem
she held him in. He had, after all, been her first Prime
Minister and held her in equally high esteem.

Collecting All Things Churchill
Winston Churchill - The Great British Bulldog
In 1941 Royal Doulton produced a series of seated
bulldogs with Union Jacks draped on their backs,
representing and helping to promote the national feeling
during this difficult period in history. A further two models
of Bulldogs were produced at this time representing
Churchill, wearing different headgear and smoking his
familiar cigar!

Never had Albert, George VI imagined that he was intended to be King,
but it was a heavy mantle he took on at a time of constitutional crisis
in Britain with the abdication of his brother who famously gave up his
throne for love. Owing to the speed at which his coronation had to be
arranged, it is his coronation commemoratives that are among the rarest
today, as there was simply so little time to prepare for the occasion.
Consequently, the famous Doulton Loving Cup for George VI bears a
resemblance to that of his brother.

Churchill (seated) with allied WWII leaders.
Together George VI and Queen Elizabeth restored the public’s love of
the monarchy through their stoicism during the brutal attacks on London
