Letter from Our Chairman
Dear Friends of United Way:
On behalf of the Board of Directors, it is my privilege to present this second biennial report of the United Way of Gloucester
County's service to our community.
While our local economy has faced many challenges over the
past twenty-four months, the generosity of United Way donors
has enabled us to continue our tradition of identifying
community needs and providing the funds to address them.
In 2010 and 2011, the United Way of Gloucester County:
- allocated $2,697,593 to support 36 health and human service initiatives to assist those in need in our community
- provided special grants to maintain the emergency shelter hotline
when state funding was reduced
- made a special grant to the Gloucester County Chapter of the
American Red Cross to replenish local emergency disaster response
funds
- maintained local access to NJ211 information and referral services
- supported the development and implementation of a strategic plan
to increase volunteerism in our community
- secured grants to support a Parents Resource Center and After
School Supplemental Instruction Program
- continued an annual food drive, collecting 14 tons of nonperishable
food for local food pantries.
You will find additional information about these and other United Way of Gloucester
County activities in this report. We strive each day to be "Gloucester County's
leader in building community capacity to foster individual well-being."
Thank you, as always, for giving the United Way.
Sincerely,
Ronald J. Uzdavinis, Esq.

How The United Way Addresses Community Needs
In 2010, the Board of Directors of the
United Way of Gloucester County approved
recommendations to redesign the way in
which it distributes funds raised during the
annual campaign.
The United Way has replaced its Fund
Distribution Cabinet and eight Allocations
Panels with a Community Investment
Cabinet and four Community Impact
Councils. Each Council will include individuals with expertise in the Council's area of
concern, agency representatives and community volunteers. Each Council is responsible to develop "requests for proposals"
based upon its assessment of the most
pressing community need and for the
review of program and service proposals to
determine the best use of United Way funding.
improve employment opportunities, and
strengthen familial relationships.
Empowering Individuals To Achieve
Self-sufficiency
United Way grants will make services available for individuals with chronic and persistent physical and intellectual challenges,
including day activities, sheltered employment, job coaching, vocational rehabilitation, basic skills development and supportive assistance to families and caregivers.
The goal is to increase individuals’ capacity
for independent living, improving employment skills and opportunities, educational
and recreational experiences, family support, and counseling.
United Way grants will be made available to
respond to individuals in need of shelter
and food, to those who are victims of natural and/or manmade disasters and help people find information about needed services.
United Way grants will support services that
improve the quality of life for families in our
community, including childcare, early and
supplemental childhood education and
enrichment, financial and communications
literacy, counseling and mentoring.
The goal is to produce measurable and sustained increases in children’s school readiness and academic achievement, increase
financial stability for low-income families,
The members champion, educate and advocate for women in Gloucester County and help
them to make positive changes in their lives.
The Council schedules educational and social
events to raise funds to support programs to
assist women and girls.
Among the Council’s activities:
- Sponsored a series of free financial literacy programs for working women
- Provided Center for People in Transition
clients with vouchers to purchase clothing needed to obtain employment
- Awarded a grant to the Alice Paul
Institute to conduct a ten-week
Leadership workshop series for eighthgrade girls
Meeting Basic Needs
Investing in Children & Families
The vision of the Women's Leadership Council
is to build a strong network of women who
work towards a common goal of enriching the
lives of women through active community
involvement, philanthropy and personal leadership.
- Supported the Girl Scout program,
“Jump $tart Your Future,” enabling girls
in grades 6 to 12 to learn about personal finances
The United Way of Gloucester County's four
Community Investment areas include the
following:
Through financial support to a coordinated
network of programs providing these services, including case management, the goal is
to greatly reduce the incidence of homelessness and hunger in Gloucester County.
Women’s Leadership Council
- Provided funding to Robins’ Nest for
recreational and cultural experiences for
the residents of their group home
Gloucester County Cares
About Hunger Food Drive
The fourth and fifth annual food collections
were held in February of 2010 and 2011.
In 2010, seventy-five partner agencies and
organizations established more than 100 locations throughout the county and collected a
total of 12,450 pounds of nonperishable food
for distribution to 35 food subsidy programs
serving Gloucester County residents. In 2011,
twenty-five additional partners joined the
weeklong effort and more than 16,000 pounds
of nonperishable food was collected at 30
locations. Nearly 1,000 pounds of canned pet
food was also collected for distribution to lowincome households by the staff of the County
Animal Shelter.
During the report period, the United Way also
distributed more than 130 emergency food
boxes to local families as part of its collaboration with PhilAbundance.
Financial Literacy
The United Way/AARP Tax Help Program
received two additional grants from the
Boeing Company to secure technology needed to make online filing available at the eight
Tax Help sites throughout Gloucester County.
During the report period, United Way/AARP
Tax Help site volunteers assisted a total of
1,480 low, moderate and fixed income households prepare and file their state and federal
income tax returns, saving them more than
$150,000 in filing fees.
Early Childhood Education
Promoting Healthy Living
United Way grants will address the community’s critical physical and behavioral health
issues including care for those without insurance or personal resources. Priorities will
include disease screening and prevention,
health services for senior citizens, addiction
treatment and prevention, and mental
health care.
Grants from Public Service Electric & Gas
Company provided the resource for two programs for the students enrolled in the
Woodbury Child Development Center’s After
School program, along with their families.
The Family Resource Center and Enrichment
Program was introduced in 2010. Parents were
asked to identify topics for bi-weekly evening
presentations held at the Center. Childcare
was provided to allow parents to attend programs and the Center’s computer lab was
made available for parents’ use.
In 2011, a grant funded a Supplemental
Education program for students in the Center’s
After School program. Four elementary education-certified teachers provided 90 minutes of
small group and individual tutoring in language arts, math and science 4 days a week.
