NONPROFIT ORG U.S. POSTAGE PAID MELBOURNE, FL PERMIT NO. 773 2700 Judge Fran Jamieson Way Viera, FL 32940-6601 JUNE 2016 VOL. III NO. 7 A Publication of Brevard Public Schools Suntree Elementary Students Raise Miracle Baby Duckling, Sergio Jana Gabrielski’s sixth grade class at Suntree Elementary had a very lively spring semester as the students had the unique experience of raising a baby duckling named Sergio. In February, Gabrielski originally planned to have the students help with the hatching process of 30 duck eggs, however the exposure to cold winter temperatures made the eggs go bad, despite incubation methods. The day before the remaining eggs were supposed to hatch only three eggs were left, by nightfall only one sole duck hatched. The miracle survivor was named Sergio, after a soccer player, and the students instantly began learning about the care and responsibility for the duckling. For three weeks, Sergio was temporarily housed in a rabbit cage, but now he roams free around his 8’x10’ outdoor pen, which contains a kiddy pool, that the students built and contributed hours of hard work towards. Students even come in early in the morning to prepare his pool, put his diaper on, and clean his enclosure. His sixth grade care takers have even lovingly named themselves the “Sergio Squad.” “Although this school year is coming to a close, and [we] will be moving on to middle school next year, all the us will remember this miracle duck and we will leave a legacy as the class that raised Sergio from birth,” said sixth grade students, Julia Audino and Tommy Tibbetts. As an act of loyalty to the sixth grade class, Sergio waddled across the stage at the students’ graduation ceremony on May 24th, bringing up the tail end of the line donned with a bow-tie. Reporters from News 13, Channel 6 and Hometown News were all in attendance to capture the momentous occasion. June 15 first. Each package was comprised of one recycled storybook and a matching toy. Students were able to browse and select a book bag of their choice, each of which contained a poem and a note about recycling books to preserve the environment. “The students were so excited about this wonderful treat,” said principal, Lori Migliore. “As they entered the building, they proudly held up their bag, squealing with joy over their selection. What a wonderful way to continue to give to our students.” When hearing that primary students at Roy Allen Elementary were in need of new books, these volunteers gathered together to assemble pre-made care packages for every student in grades pre-K through 10:35 AM $4 Tickets BPS TV gets an update $50 Off Admin Fee upon enrollment with this Ad Call for a Tour or come in for a Complimentary Trial • 321-676-3460 JUNE 2016 Did you know Brevard Public Schools has a cable channel?
