Rechartering is NOW! And Troop Dues... WE MUST COMPLETE THE RECHARTER PROCESS TROOP AND CREW IN THE NEXT FEW DAYS. We need your help to do this REGISTERED ADULTS: Please take a look at the expiration date for your Youth Protection Training ASAP. If it expires in 2015, please retake the YPT training at https://myscouting.scouting.org as soon as you can. If that training isn't complete by the time we turn in the recharter paperwork, you may have to be dropped from the troop roster. Then you must fill out a new pain-in-the-butt Adult Application in addition to YPT to get reregistered. Avoid that by spending 30 minutes on the online training now. Please print copies of your YPT completed training certificate. Annual troop dues are being collected during this process too. A large part of Troop Dues go toward the annual cost of registration for each scout and each registered adult member of the troop. The cost this year remains the same $55 per scout, $30 for each registered adult member. The remainder of the troop dues goes toward items like merit badges and rank advancement patches. Please make out checks to BSA Troop 264. Thank you to the many who have turned in their troop dues and/or completed the Youth Protection Training (YPT)! Adult Leader Training for 2014-15 For a summary of what’s involved with adult leader training, please see the summary on Page 11 of the September Signaler: http://www.troop264olney.net/Signalers/2014-09.pdf That is the place to start. Anyone 18 and over can take these training courses. An Adult Application must be completed first, and Youth Protection Training taken online at http://myscouting.scouting.org (takes about 30 minutes). Upcoming training for Scoutmaster / Assistant Scoutmaster: Scoutmaster Specific Training course dates: December 13 Day: http://ncacbsa.site-ym.com/events/event_details.asp?id=473018&group=114105 March 7, 2015 Day: http://ncacbsa.site-ym.com/events/event_details.asp?id=473026&group=113271 April 14 & 21 & 28: http://ncacbsa.site-ym.com/events/event_details.asp?id=473026&group=113271 (3 Tuesday nights) Then you must take Introduction to Outdoor Leadership Skills (IOLS) (dates offered): May 30-31, 2015: http://ncacbsa.site-ym.com/events/event_details.asp?id=490998&group=113271 Then you are trained and can wear the TRAINED strip on your scout shirt sleeve. The troop is always in need of fully trained adult leadership! This gives us more flexibility for troop outings, which require at least one trained adult. More importantly, it gives insight as to how to work best with the scouts. 4 The Signaler – Troop 264’s Newsletter! Wreaths and Ornaments – Keep Selling! Wreath and White House Ornament sales are happening! This is the troop’s big fall/winter fundraiser. It is also an opportunity for scouts to earn some money in the form of Scout Credits, that can be applied to some of the bigger outings like summer camp or Philmont. The earlier you begin selling, the more you can make. This year, thanks to your November efforts, we are off to a strong start with wreath and ornament sales. Don’t stop now! WREATHS. The price for Holiday Wreaths is the same as last year, at $27 apiece. We will put in the initial order for the troop on November 1, and can add to that number if scouts sell more. Wreaths are available for delivery NOW. WHITE HOUSE ORNAMENTS: The troop is selling the White House Ornaments this year for $24 apiece. This year the focus is on President Warren G. Harding. Here is the summary about the ornament: “ The 2014 Official White House Christmas Ornament honors President Warren G. Harding, who served as the 29th president of the U.S. from 1921-1923. As a child, Harding dreamed of growing up and becoming an engineer. As President, he took over the helm of Alaska Railroad #618 for 51 minutes, during his famous transcontinental speaking and sightseeing tour ca lled, "Voyage of Understanding." It was reported that the Hardings ‘had as much fun as two youngsters on their first train trip.’ ‘This is the most delightful ride I have taken in my life!’ the President said in 1923. Unfortunately the train that carri ed him west at the beginning of his trip also carried his casket back east to Washington DC, following his sudden death from apoplexy or a stroke, in his room at the San Francisco Palace Hotel on August 2, 1923. His casket was elevated to allow mourners to see it through the windows of the Superb as the train passed through towns across the country. An estimated 3 million people paid their respects. Mrs. Harding later gave the white gloves the president wore while at the throttle to the engineer as a memento. The inspiration for the 2014 ornament came from his love of trains. The gold, red, white, and blue enameled engine is a replica of one of many steam powered locomotives that pulled the Presidential Special. Attached is the coal car that fueled the engine. This ornament can be hung separately or attached to the President's private Pullman car. Called the "Superb", this gold and green car was outfitted with 5 bedrooms and baths, a kitchen and observation room. White House chefs, valets and other domestic staff accompanied him on the journey. The Superb also was equipped with a public address system, from which President Harding made his speeches. 5 The Signaler – Troop 264’s Newsletter! This unique, first of its kind, two-piece official Christmas ornament will add a new dimension to your collection of White House presidential ornaments. The first ornament was created in 1981. The sale of such ornaments helped to fund the acquisition of historical furnishings and artwork for the permanent White House Collection.” Contact friends, relatives, neighbors, especially those that purchased wreaths or ornaments last year. This year, Mrs. Danielle Delaney is coordinating wreath sales for the troop, and Mrs. Bernadette Meehan is administering the ornament sales. Wreaths and ornaments are available for pickup and delivery now. Backpacking on the C&O Canal – December 6-7 The Thundercats patrol is assembling a C&O Canal backpacking overnight on this weekend, details of which have not reached the Signaler as of this date. Details will be sent out to the troop as soon as we get them. Wreath/Ornament Sales at the Olney Farmers Market – December 7 Mrs. Meehan has obtained a space at the Olney Farmers Market on Dec. 7 from which the troop can sell wreaths and ornaments. Hours are from 10:30 AM to 3:30 PM. Scouts who participate will have a share of the scout credits obtained from sales. Please sign up with Mrs. Meehan at the December 1 patrol meeting or at [email protected] . American Legion Flag Retirement Ceremony – 2 PM, December 7 The Norman Price American Legion Post No. 68, which is the sponsor for Troop and Venturing Crew 264, will have its annual flag retirement ceremony at 2 PM at Brookeville Academy in Brookeville. Scouts and scouters are asked to attend in full scout uniform. A bugler is needed, please contact Mr. Bogan if you can help in that capacity. Troop Holiday Sing-A-Long at Friends’ Nursing Home – December 13 This is the date for the annual Holiday Sing-A-Long at Friends Nursing Home in Ashton, on Norwood Road, 11 AM to noon. All are welcome to participate. We sing Christmas carols to the residents, for their enjoyment. Don’t worry about style, if you can croak out a tune, you’re in. Scouts with instruments are encouraged to bring them, and there is a piano on site. The More the Merrier! 100+ Eagles Celebration – Sunday, December 21, 1 to 4 PM Just in case you missed it on Page 1. If you don’t do this now, you can never do it again. http://www.troop264olney.net/archive/100Eagles/100EaglesEvent.html 6 The Signaler – Troop 264’s Newsletter! Troop/Crew Holiday Party – December 22 at 7 PM The Troop and Venturing Crew will hold the annual Holiday Party at 7 PM. We realize that this is only one day after the Big Celebration, and likely will include some leftovers from that event, but this party will have a less formal atmosphere. Come, relax, enjoy! 8th Annual Webelos Visit Night – January 12, 7 PM The troop will hold its Eighth Annual Webelos visit night on Monday, January 12, 7:00 to about 8:30 PM, at St. John’s, in place of the regular troop meeting. Webelos II Cub Scouts from local packs, and parents, are invited to visit. Boys who are not presently in Cub Scouts, but who may be considering Boy Scouts, are also welcome to attend, along with their parents. Each patrol will be demonstrating skills learned and used in Boy Scouts. Patrol skill assignments will be made at the December TLC meeting. Scouts and scouters in contact with local Cub Scout packs should make them aware of this opportunity and get this on their calendars. Questions can be directed to [email protected] . This has been a popular event every year to date and we expect it to be equally so this time. This is YOUR opportunity to show Cub Scouts and parents what Scouting has done for you, and that there is fun beyond Cub Scouts. We hope it will kindle enthusiasm in the Webelos scouts to tread the same path beyond Cub Scouts, whether with Troop 264 or elsewhere. Information about Troop 264 is always available on the troop’s website, www.troop264olney.net , and in the recent Signaler newsletters therein, and via e-mail at [email protected] . Now we turn to what DID happen: Scouting for Food – Saturday, November 8 Troop 264 ran the collection point at the Olney Safeway. According to the tally assembled by scouts, 1443 plastic bags full of food were donated. This was more than enough to fill every big blue bin on the truck and then some. Some of these collected by local troops and packs came in hundreds at a time, in pickups and on trailers; others came singly or a few at a time in cars. All donations are greatly appreciated and will greatly help Manna and local food banks maintain service to needy families and individuals in the coming months. 8 Scouting for Food – November 8 (hours) Sean D. Primitive Campout – November 22-23 An early season cold snap limited the temperature to around 20° for the first arrivals on Saturday morning. One of the first on the wires across the river was Thundercat Sean D. However, once 2/3 the way across, Sean discovered that he was too short to reach the top wire any longer! Having worked his way back, Mr. Bickel and Jim Bickel went across to lower the top wire by about 5 inches. That solved that problem for all the younger scouts, however, in the process of sending tools across the cable, a hammer and a bar fell into the river. The hammer was later recovered by Peter B. wearing waders, the bar could not be found in the grass at the bottom of the river. Before long many scouts were across the river, surveying locations and constructing shelters to stay overnight in. This continued until about 2 PM (with an interruption for lunch). 9 The Signaler – Troop 264’s Newsletter! 10 The Signaler – Troop 264’s Newsletter! 2 PM is when the potato cannons came out to play. The next hour and a half were spent launching spuds across the field and river and into the woods. Then it was back to finish up the shelters. The Venturing Crew did not make shelters but stayed near the fire all night. Crusaders Thundercats Shelter #1 Eagles & Vikings 11 The Signaler – Troop 264’s Newsletter! The patrol cooking contest at nightfall was a tie between the Venturing Crew and the Thundercats, with the Viking patrol in second place. This year we could not have a bonfire, so we compensated to some extent by having four smaller fires in the evening. There were nice and warm as the temperature fell off after nightfall. The Thundercats main shelter collapsed during the night, and the other shelter damaged, under unclear circumstances. The patrol spent the remainder of the night under the tarps, without problems. The temperature on the Boganometer dropped to 25° by morning. Thate means that all who stayed overnight get 7 polar bear points to start off this winter season. Sunday morning, one incompletely tethered bag fell off the line while being pulled across the cables and began floating down the river. Fortunately it hung up on a snag along the bank and was retrieved, but not before one scout fell in trying to reach it. A fun time overall! Partial participant list – please advise (1) if we missed you and (2) whether you stayed overnight. An update will be published in the January Signaler. * denotes camping overnight. Northern Tier Presentation – November 24 During the troop meeting, T264 Eagle scouts Jim Bickel and Jeremy Neufeld, who have been Interpreters at BSA’s Northern Tier High Adventure base for the past three years and one year (respectively), gave a spirited presentation of what to expect on a visit to NT. There were a number of questions afterward that were well answered by these experienced guides. T264 is tentatively planning to go to NT in 2016. We should receive information on the registration process in December with the NT lottery for slots in mid January. The following scouts and scouters have indicated interest to date. It is not too late to sign up! Scouts must be at least 14 years of age by the date of arrival at NT (or 13 and finished 8th grade). Here’s the list: Jacob Wei., Luke T., Mr. Rich T., Brandon S., Luke R., Mrs. Carolyn R. At the end of the same troop meeting, scouts and scouters were treated to Penn State Creamery Ice Cream by Jim Bickel, who is a student at the main campus presently. Thanks, Jim and Jeremy!!! Olney Interfaith Thanksgiving Service – November 26 Many thanks to the Scouts of Troop 264 who provided assistance to the Olney Interfaith Thanksgiving Service, held at B'nai Shalom on November 25, 2014. I am very proud of their community service. ~ Mrs. Ginny Weinberger Mr. Don Light Mr. Al B. Jacob Wei. Luke R. Eric L. Sean D. Atticus M. Navy vs. Georgia Southern – November 15 Not many from the troop went to the gave this year, probably because it was not promoted well But Mr. Bogan was there, and Midshipman and T264 Eagle Scout Holland McCabe give a tour of the Academy grounds to a number of Cub Scouts and parents. This was be Holland’s last tour as he will be graduating in the spring. Navy won, by the way. U.S. Merchant Marine Academy Camporee – April 17-19, 2015 T264 and V264 have been invited to attend the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy Camporee at Kings Point, Long Island, NY on April 17-19. This will be the first time the troop or crew has attended this event. The Camporee itself is not widely publicized and is limited to about 350 participants. Presently, T264 has 21 people signed up for this event, about evenly split between scouts and adults. We are asking for limited additional slots, you can guarantee yours by signing up now. WE STILL HAVE SPACES AVAILABLE! The Academy (also known as USMMA or Kings Point) is one of the five United States Federal Service Academies and it is charged with training officers for the United States Merchant Marine, all branches of the military, and the transportation industry. Midshipmen are trained in marine engineering, navigation, ship's administration, maritime law, personnel management, international law, customs, and many other subjects important to the task of running a large maritime vessels. Below are a couple YouTube links that display the academy.” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xEhHvwiGoxk https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t4Mz5FC7dVk [T]his is one of the best kept secrets of the military. Graduates get to go tuition, room and board free just like the Naval Academy (which all of these folks know), but when the Merchant Marine Academy Officer graduates, they can join any of the branches. Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, or remain Merchant Marine. I would recommend having the scouts think about bringing a sibling that is looking forward to college and willing to consider one of the "uniformed Services". …This link shows the class profile, proving it is not as difficult to enter as the Naval Academy. http://www.usmma.edu/admissions/class-profile ~ [Dr.]Dave Smisson Scouts signed up: Adults signed up: Luke T. This figure will be adjusted next spring once we work out the cost of the charter bus. We are close to the point where the portion of the bus cost will come down for all as additional persons join this expedition. All participants will receive a USMMA patch and T-shirt. Sign up with Mr. Bickel, [email protected] . 14 The Signaler – Troop 264’s Newsletter! Philmont 2015 – August 1-15 The second installment has been paid to Philmont, and the crew members are planning prep hike to learn about backpacking and working together as a group. The next installment payment is due in February, then after that the airfare and related travel expensed will come due in May. Trip dates are August 1 to 15, 2014. There are still spaces for interested scouts, must be 14 or older by August 3, 2015. Contact Mr. Dan Parks if you have interest, [email protected] . Tell It to Mr. Matyas! Mr. Gary Matyas is the troop’s Advancement Chair, which is a fancy (and understated) way of saying that he keeps track of all the rank advancements, merit badges, and other awards that all the scouts earn. Plus completed training for the adults, that isn’t done online by registered scouters at http://myscouting.scouting.org . This is a big job, as you can imagine, particularly in the weeks before a Court of Honor. You can help. Just drop an e -mail to Mr. Matyas at [email protected] for any of the following. Include the scout’s name, what the e -mail is relating to, and the date(s): Rank advancements that may not go through the 3 person Board of Review (BOR). Generally, this applies to Scout rank, most other BORs are administered by Mr. Greenspon. Service project hours outside the troop, that a scout wants to use to meet a rank advancement or merit badge requirement. This might include, for example, an event outside of scouting where the hours are not being applied to some other purpose, whether inside or outside of scouts. Even if you mark the hours in your Scout Handbook, they aren’t entered into the troop database if you don’t say something. So report them early, before your Scoutmaster conference. Include a short description of the project(s) along with the date(s) and hours. Eagle project accounting. At the end of each Eagle project, the scout assembles a table of who worked how many hours. Please provide a copy to Mr. Matyas so that he can credit project hours to each scout in the list. Events not in the Signaler. Mr. Matyas uses the Signaler record to establish scouts’ participation record, so he won’t know of anything not published there. The best solution for that is to put an article in the Signaler, and give public credit to those who participated. Your attention to these small matters will improve the function of the troop, and thank you in advance for your assistance! Video Training for Tenderfoot, Second Class, and First Class Scouting.org has videos available to help scouts with the rank requirements of Tenderfoot, Second Class, and First Class. These short videos include the current requirements listed for Tenderfoot through First Class. http://www.scouting.org/scoutsource/Applications/RankVideo.aspx 15 The Signaler – Troop 264’s Newsletter! Scout Spirit for Advancement We all recognize that Scout Spirit is hard to evaluate. We know Scout Spirit includes being helpful and cheerful, but it is more than that…it’s giving back. In an effort to assist Patrol D ads in recognizing Scout Spirit, the following guidelines are offered. Our troop believes that prior to each advancement, participation in the following activities exemplify the essences of Scout Spirit: • • • • A minimum of 1 nursing home visit Participation in at least 1 fundraiser At least 4 overnight outings per year Good deeds done outside of scouts The Patrol Dad, not a senior scout, is responsible for signing off on Scout Spirit prior to your Scoutmaster Conference. BOR for Star and Life Scout Advancements While ropes and compasses are provided for younger ranks, by the time you are ready for Star and Life advancement, you should be responsible enough to bring your own knot rope and compass for your BOR. We are requiring all scouts who are advancing to Star or Life to bring a knot rope and compass to their BOR. Life and Eagle Scouts as Advisory BOR Members If you are a Life or Eagle Scout and would like to sit on a Tenderfoot, Second Class, First Class, or Star BOR, as a “Technical Expert”, call Mr. Greenspon on 301-774-5394. Troop Activity Policy Please be reminded that it is troop policy (and common courtesy) for a scout or scouter to pay the costs associated with an event he or she has signed up for but did not attend, without being asked. No-shows increase the costs to the troop and the participants, require the troop to reserve unneeded space and transport excess equipment, and results in wasted food and materials. We realize that situations inevitably will occur that prevent a scout from attending events, and ask that the scout or scouter contact the person organizing the event right away. If the conflict is raised early enough, adjustments can often be made where food has not yet been purchased or reservations have not been finalized. Getting Credit for Troop Activities It’s important that everyone who participates in Troop 264 campouts, trips, and community service activities gets credit for their hard work. The Signaler provides the permanent record of everyone who attends these events. Patrol leaders need to take responsibility for collecting the names of participants in their patrols and send those lists, preferably by e-mail, to the Signaler staff by the monthly deadline. E-mail lists to [email protected] . 17 The Signaler – Troop 264’s Newsletter!
