October Birthdays
In astrology, those born between October 1st
and 22nd balance the scales of Libra. Libras
seek harmony and value fairness and justice.
Although they’d rather avoid conflict, they are
excellent team players—tactful and polite at
soothing those embroiled in an argument. If
you’re born between October 23rd and 31st,
you are Scorpio. Scorpions are powerful
investigators who stay abreast of all the
comings and goings of their peers, take
control, and lead the way to success.

It’s in the Bag
Purses, pocketbooks,
satchels, totes, clutches
—whatever the handbag,
it’s worth celebrating on
October 10, Handbag
Day. Technically, a
purse is only supposed to hold coins, whereas
a handbag is a complete carryall. These days
anything goes in a handbag: wallet, keys,
sunglasses, mobile phone, mints, gum, pen
and paper, umbrella, baby toys… Truly, some
handbags carry as much as a small suitcase.
The first ―handbags‖ were made of leather,
metal, or fabric studded with ornaments. The
oldest surviving bag, dating back to c. 2,500
BC, features bead-like rows of canine teeth on
fabric. At just 700 years old, the bag pictured
above (reputed to be a horseman’s saddlebag)
is intricately inlaid with gold and silver,
depicting scenes of an enthroned couple,
musicians, and hunters. It’s kept for display at
London’s Courtauld Gallery

A Halloween Story
One fall evening a young couple was walking down the street
admiring all of the fall colors and decorations for Halloween. All of a
sudden the bushes in front of them began to shake and out popped a
ghost. The couple was so shocked they didn’t run away or scream. The
little ghost just stared back at them not knowing what to do either. The
wife asked the ghost what its name was. The ghost said “Boo” the
husband said to the ghost we are not afraid of you; now please tell us
your name. Once again the ghost says “Boo.” This goes on for quite
awhile; finally the ghost is so frustrated it yells “BOO” as loud as it can.
The couple stepped back and walked the other way as quickly as they
could. The couple reached their house and hid in bed under their
covers to wait for the morning. A short while later there was a knock
on the front door. The husband got up went to the front door and
peered through the peep hole only to see the little ghost staring back at
him. The ghost now rings the door bell. The wife comes down stairs to
join her husband. They both yell through the door for the ghost to go
away. Once more the little ghost rings the door bell and couple opens
the front door. The little ghost now says “Trick or Treat.” Then the
little ghost says…you know today is Halloween…and I am not a real
ghost.
