PAGE 6 AUGUST 2013 July Book Club Recap At the July Book Club, we met on a warm summer evening in Debbie Seif ’s backyard. We read Lunch in Paris, a romantic memoir by Elizabeth Bard that led to discussions about places we have traveled and our thoughts about the author’s situation (an American living the French way of life). The book is full of recipes and many of the attendees tried their hand at cooking/baking some of the dishes. (We need to find more of these kinds of books…) Below you will find the recipe that I made – incredibly easy molten lava cakes. I followed the directions for freezing the cakes. This allowed me to make them the night before and then take them over to Debbie’s and bake them there, ensuring molten centers. We hope that you try out this book and its recipes and/or join us at a future Book Club. INDIVIDUAL MOLTEN LAVA CAKES If you have a chocoholic in your life, prepare to be worshipped. Perfect for dessert for two, this recipe also makes you look a teensy bit like a culinary genius in front of guests. Make the batter in advance, and pop the cakes into the oven right after dinner. As for accompaniments, resist the temptation to go overboard; forget the caramel sauce and raspberry coulis. A dollop of lightly sweetened whipped cream or a golf ballsized scoop of vanilla ice cream [or frozen custard] is all that is required. 8 tablespoons (1 stick) unsalted butter 5 ounces dark chocolate (70 percent cocoa) A good pinch of coarse sea salt 2 e$s 2 e$ yolks 1/4 cup sugar 1 tablespoon flour Preheat the oven to 450°F. Melt butter and chocolate together in the top of a double boiler or in the microwave. Add sea salt. Meanwhile, beat together the eggs, egg yolks, and sugar with a whisk or an electric beater until light and slightly foamy. Add the egg mixture to the warm chocolate; whisk quickly to combine. Add flour and stir just to combine. The batter will be pretty thick. The unmolding is the tricky part of these little cakes; the only foolproof solution I’ve found is to use Reynolds foil cupcake liners (paper liners don’t work, they stick). Use 5 or 6 liners stacked together so they’re rigid enough to make a freestanding mold. Make 6 of these molds. (If you can’t find foil baking cups, use small ramekins, generously buttered.) Divide the batter evenly among the molds. (You can make the cakes in advance to this point and chill them until you’re ready to bake. But be sure to bring the batter back to room temperature before baking.) Baking time will depend on your oven; start with 7 minutes for a thin outer shell with a completely molten interior, 8 minutes for a slightly thick crust and a gooey heart. Yield: Serves 6 ! PAGE 8 AUGUST 2013 Keeping Cool Near the Pool (or Lake, or Splashpad, oh well, you get the idea)! Assuming that August will eventually bring the hot, hot summer days that have nearly evaded so far this summer, it can be a great time to explore a new beach, venture out to a community pool, or stop by a splash pad for a quick cool off with the kids. There are many great places to explore within a half hour of our doorsteps. Great Beaches along Lake Michigan – Atwater Park, Shorewood Looking for a deep sand beach without the hustle of Bradford Beach? Atwater is the answer. With a neighborhood feel, an innovative new playground adjacent the beach, and enough space to spread out even on a busy day, Atwater is Shorewood’s best answer to lakeside living. Schlitz Audubon Nature Center, Bayside, WI Besides being a great nature center full of programs for all ages, wonderful trails, and a premiere preschool program, the SANC is also home to a beach on Lake Michigan that will transport you “Up North” only minutes from home. Harrington Beach, near Belgium This state park has a nice ride-in paved bike trail (they also have a tram on the weekends you can use). The trail runs about a mile parallel to the beach with access trails to picnic and beach areas. Typically the further along the trail you go, the more secluded you get. It also has a very picturesque quarry lake, great for a quick hike. Public Pools of Note David F. Schulz Aquatic Center in Lincoln Park, Milwaukee Nearly in Whitefish Bay, this popular pool has great facilities, and wonderful young children’s hours in the mornings all summer long. Wirth Park, Brookfield has a very large kid's pool, complete with small water slide and water features. Their before-noon young children’s hours make the experience all the more enjoyable for young families. ! Hoyt Park Pool, Wauwatosa Fun for all ages, and special hours for the younger set, this pool is worth the drive! Cedarburg Community Pool, Cedarburg – One of the areas best kept secrets, it is sure to cool your family off and leave smiles on your faces. Splash Away on a Hot Hot Day – Bayshore Town Square, Glendale – Stop in for entertainment and splash pad fun throughout the summer. Madison Park Splash Pad, Wauwatosa This splashpad, located across from Timmerman Airport, has a fun “aviation” theme to it, with lots of water features to keep your kids guessing. ! We’ll still be celebrating the family playgroups and family parties enjoyed throughout the year, but this year weekly playgroups will have a more intimate approach. This year we will be offering small group playgroups for our members! You can sign up this month on Groupspaces (Please provide the age(s) of children that will be participating to aid us in your placements). We will then place you within a small group of 4-6 parents/caregivers. Group members will be announced at the beginning of September. Each Group will be in charge of setting its own meeting schedule (although we’d suggest weekly or bi-weekly). New additions throughout the year will be welcome! Sign Up Here! ! PAGE 11 !!!
