Cummings Center Sculpture Commission Cummings Properties is pleased to commission the design and installation of a new distinctive public art sculpture to complement its new six-­‐story residential condominium development at Cummings Center. “Elliott Landing” will house 73 state-­‐of-­‐the-­‐art, luxury condominiums along the Bass River in Beverly, MA, right at the corner of Elliott and McKay Streets. This commission aims to enhance the attractiveness of the site for future residents and for the thousands of people who pass through the intersection daily. Cummings wishes to appoint a suitably qualified and experienced New England-­‐based artist to create this distinctive public artwork.
This planned sculpture should be no greater than 10 x 10 feet at its base and no taller than 20 feet in height. It should be constructed of durable, low-­‐maintenance materials, and should not include anything of intrinsic value (e.g., copper, bronze or brass). Its design should not invite graffiti, wading, climbing, or other unsafe interactions. Submitting artists are asked for proposals that (1) showcase the proposed design and (2) detail the production of the work. All materials used to create the sculpture must be approved in advance by Cummings Properties. Consideration will be given to the use of innovative materials or approaches and, where possible, use of local suppliers rather than out-­‐of-­‐area businesses. All submitting artists must show a successful track record of public or private sculptural installations in their chosen medium. ARTWORK OBJECTIVES
Create a unique and distinctive high quality artwork that: ● Integrates with the functional requirements of the immediate area, and is durable and easy to maintain. (A tour of the sculpture site may be scheduled through Cummings Properties Leasing Office at 978-­‐922-­‐9000.) ● Strengthens the personality and identity of the Elliott Landing development, in an innovative and engaging way. ● Provides an enjoyable focal or gateway point for residents, commuters, pedestrians, and visitors to the city. ● Generates awareness of the attributes and history of the Cummings Center site while employing a contemporary artistic approach. DEADLINES
● Deadline for Completed Proposals, Friday, August 5, 2016 ● Design Chosen + Announced, Thursday, September 15, 2016 ● Sculpture installed by Saturday, June 3, 2017. BUDGET
In preparing a proposal, artists should consider that all site preparation, an appropriate foundation/base, crane rental for final placement of the sculpture at Cummings Center, all other preparatory work, lighting, and an adequate supply of water, if necessary, will be provided by Cummings Properties at its expense.
Cummings Properties has allocated $50,000 to cover the artist’s research, planning, design, construction and transport of the sculpture to the installation site at Elliott Landing, in Beverly.
SUBMISSIONS
Submit all materials as a single pdf to [email protected]. They must include: ● 10-­‐12 examples, with photos and locations, of previous work that showcase the artist’s ability to execute a work of this scope and scale. Examples must be of the artist’s original artwork. ● At least 5 design sketches and/or renderings, or maquette, showing the sculpture in relation to the building with an in-­‐depth explanation of what Cummings Properties will receive as an end product. ● A detailed “Project Budget” describing the feasibility of the project. It should detail the estimated cost of the sculpture’s design, personnel, materials, construction, and transportation to the site. ● A proposed timeline for the design, construction and installation, with a detailed explanation of the production process. Submissions will be juried by a committee of faculty from Montserrat College of Art in Beverly MA, and the jury shall provide a recommendation to Cummings Properties regarding a single preferred submission. ELIGIBILITY
This commission is open to professional artists 18 and over, regardless of race, color, national origin, gender, military status, sexual orientation, marital status, or physical or mental disability. Artist teams may apply, and must designate one artist as the lead contact. All artists must have a minimum of five (5) years of demonstrated professional visual art experience (not student work) and must have examples of previous experience with large-­‐scale outdoor sculpture or sculptural installation projects. ABOUT THE CLIENT + PROJECT
Cummings Properties of Woburn, MA, the firm that purchased, fully renovated and transformed the hulking and derelict United Shoe Machinery Corporation factory at 181 Elliott Street, Beverly into the thriving business center now known as “Cummings Center,” is building an exciting new residential condominium building on-­‐site at the intersection of Elliott Street (Route 62) and McKay Street. The new building, to be known as “Elliott Landing,” will house 73 luxury condominiums, many of which will have views of downtown Beverly, the Bass River and/or the Cummings Center. While no particular “theme” has been identified for the planned sculpture, the 181 Elliott Street site has a storied history as one of oldest industrial sites in the United States. In fact, circa 1647, an early settler named John Friend established a tide mill on the south side of what is now Elliott Street, almost directly across from the Elliott Landing site. Reportedly, the mill operated until the late 1880s. Later, during 1901, United Shoe Machinery Corporation began construction of the large industrial buildings still in existence at Cummings Center today. For some period of time during the mid-­‐1900s, the 100 Cummings Center building was the largest reinforced concrete structure in the world.
