JK to 5
Etienne Brule JPS is a small community school located at
Parklawn and Berry Road. Our school was built in 1957 and
named after the French explorer Etienne Brule, who was the first
European explorer to reach the mouth of the Humber River
and set foot in the vicinity now known as Toronto. Etienne Brule
serves approximately 150 students, representing almost 40
different language groups. Humber Bay Child Care is housed in
the school building.
Our mission is to promote the attitudes, skills, and knowledge
necessary to live in a global society; while enhancing our focus on
literacy, numeracy, and the arts in a safe and welcoming
environment for our learners, staff and community. Our school
motto is "Be The Best That You Can Be".
School Focus for This Year
Our school's aim is to provide
learning opportunities that enhance
children's natural desire to learn.
Everyone works together
collaboratively to provide an enriching
learning environment. Your child will
have an opportunity to discover
different ways to be successful - a place where they feel welcome,
safe, included and understood. This year staff and students
have been working on implementing learning goals, success
criteria and descriptive feedback. They are also focusing on
problem solving strategies in Math and a collaborative Math
enquiry. We are beginning to integrate more technology into the
teaching and learning.
More Information about Étienne Brûlé Junior School
Equity
Etienne Brule provides support for students new to our country as
well as to students whose first language is other than English. Our
reading materials are reflective of our school population. We
provide dual language books to help to support our ESL learners.
Inclusive resources are in our classrooms and our library.
Roots of Empathy
Etienne Brule takes part in the Roots of Empathy program. Each
year a class is chosen to receive instruction on child development
and empathy from a Roots of Empathy instructor, followed by a visit
from a mother and her baby. This year our Grade 2 class is
participating in the Roots of Empathy Program. This is another
school-community partnership.
Technology at Etienne Brule
Staff and students are beginning to integrate technology more and
more into their teaching and learning. There are now several
interactive white boards in the school as well as a cart of laptops
that is part of the mobile computing strategy. Grade 5 students have
access to a number of playbooks. Most of the school now has
wireless access.
Safe and Caring Community
Etienne Brule provides students, staff and community with a safe,
secure and caring environment. Respect, responsibility, empathy,
kindness & caring, teamwork, fairness, honesty, co-operation,
integrity and perseverance are all valued and encouraged. Each
month students are recognized in a Character Education assembly.

Student Life - Where You Belong
Etienne Brule enriches its programs by integrating activities
sponsored by our School Council, such as "Scientists in the
Classroom". One of our community partners, Stonegate
Health Centre, also offers a snack program to our students
each Monday. Our staff provide the students with
co-curricular activities/clubs, such as Chess Club,
Photography Club, Bench ball, Talent Show and many
others.
Etienne Brule students also participate in many charitable
activities: Terry Fox Walk, Jump Rope for Heart and
we raise funds to donate to countries who have been
devastated by natural disasters.
Several school wide trips or class trips are offered
throughout the year - Visit to the theatres, Black Creek
Pioneer Village, Etobicoke Field Studies Centre, Master
Card Centre and many others.
Each month, we have a recognition assembly to
acknowledge students' accomplishments.
What Sets Us Apart
Since we are a small school we get to know many of our
students and their families even before they
begin kindergarten as many of them attend the daycare on
site. Parents and children feel welcome and each staff
member knows almost every student personally by name.
We will continue to have meetings to plan effective
programs, to provide a variety of co-curricular activities, to
provide leadership opportunities, to acknowledge student
success through monthly recognition assemblies, to
participate in school spirit days, to provide parent workshops
that demonstrate skills to use at home to help their children,
to encourage parent participation in school-wide activities
and to continue to form partnerships with local community
agencies to support our students and families.
Parent and Community Engagement
Etienne Brule parents work together with us to ensure our school
meets the needs of all of our students. Volunteers from our
community assist us in the classrooms, on school trips, with the All
Stars Reading program, and provide special activities for the
students, such as a Dance-a-thon and BBQ/Fun Fair and Holiday
Cookie decorating.
The School Council has been successful in receiving the Ministry of
Education Parent Outreach Grant which has been utilized to provide
workshops for parents.
Etienne Brule has close ties with the Food Bank, Public Library,
Stonegate Community Health Centre, Parks and Recreation,
Community Police, Fire and Health Services. We are a host school
for candidates from various Faculties of Education. We have links to
many Charitable Organizations, such as Terry Fox and Heart and
Stroke Foundation.
TDSB - Better Schools. Brighter Futures
Imagine a TDSB where all schools share a common core set of characteristics. They are
community-driven and focused on teaching and learning. Students and parents have a wide variety of
opportunities and there are enough students in every school to increase program choices.
Imagine there is a clear focus on achieving student success and every student is engaged, has a voice,
access to a caring adult and the opportunity to develop their full potential.
Here at the TDSB our focus is on student achievement, parent and community engagement and financial
stability.
