ince 1968, Tower of Power has been delivering its unique
brand of “Oakland style” music and maintaining a class
of its own. Leader and founding member Emilio Castillo labeled the group’s sound as “Urban Soul Music.”
Over the years, Tower of Power has performed with
some of music’s biggest names including Elton John,
Santana, Bonnie Raitt, Huey Lewis,Little Feat, Dionne
Warwick, David Sanborn, Paula Abdul, Aaron Neville,
Aerosmith, Michael Bolton, Billy Preston, Rod Stewart,
Toto, and more.
Tower of Power’s rhythm section lays down a groove like no
other band. The horn driven sound is unique from writing and
arranging to mixing and performing. The group’s collection of
hits include “You’re Still A Young Man,” “So Very Hard To Go,”
“Soul With a Capital S,” “Soul Vaccination,” “What Is Hip?”
and “Don’t Change Horses (In the Middle of a Stream).”

s Band originally billed itself as “The
Motowns” when formed by band leader
Emilio Castillo who hired Stephen
“Doc” Kupka in 1968 and soon changed
their name to Tower of Power while
performing around The Bay Area
s Have recorded with Elton John,
Aerosmith, Santana, Linda Ronstadt,
P-Diddy, and have influenced a generation of musicians.
s The horn section from Tower of Power has made guest appearances with
The Grateful Dead, Santana, The Rolling
Stones, Heart, Rod Stewart, Eurythymics, Huey Lewis and the News, David
Sanborn, and Little Feat, among many
other recording artists.
s “So Very Hard To Go” was featured in
the films, City of God and Semi-Pro and
peaked at #17 on the Billboard Hot 100
and hit the number one spot on many
west coast top 40 radio stations
s In 1973, their eponymous third album
peaked at number #15 on the Billboard
Pop Album Chart and was RIAA certified gold (for sales
in excess of 550,000).
s The band is recognized as having
possibly the finest rhythm and horn
sections in the music world

It was recorded during the prime of
their career on the air with WLIR-FM on
May 14, 1974 in Hempstead, Long Island
at Ultrasonic Recording Studio.

s Tower of Power joined Journey and
the Steve Miller Band for San Francisco
Fest Tour in 2014 for the first time ever.
