St. Francis of Assisi Parish September 20, 2015 • Twenty-fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time ...................................................................................... L From the Pastor’s Desk ast week, I men oned that I was experiencing more kidney stone issues. As of Monday (September 14), I am on the mend. I have known my urologist since he was a freshman in high school, have great confidence in him, and he is very a en ve to my health concerns and to me. For those reasons I make the 3-hour trip for treatment to Santa Cruz, where he is located. I have some long- me friends in Santa Cruz who nurse me through my recovery, so I am in a good place to be treated and for recupera on. I hope to return to Sacramento this week to complete my recovery and to be with you for the first two Masses this weekend. Right a er 7:30 am Mass, I will drive to Oakland to catch my flight to Washington D.C. for the canoniza on of Fr. Junipero Serra at the Shrine of the Immaculate Concep on. I will arrive late on Sunday night and stay at the Franciscan Monastery of the Holy Land un l Friday morning. On Monday will be the first rehearsal for the liturgy. Another will follow on Tuesday and another shortly before the liturgy on Wednesday a ernoon. The liturgy will take place that a ernoon at 1:15 pm PST outdoors on the east por co of the Shrine of the Immaculate Concep on against the backdrop of the buildings of the Catholic University of America. At Pope Francis’ request, the en re liturgy will be in Spanish with simulcast transla on into English. Fr. Sebas an and Fr. Ray and 10 people from our parish will be a ending the liturgy, as well as 10 students and faculty from St. Francis High School. They will be part of 25,000 plus a endees. At the beginning of the liturgy, as Vice-Postulator for the Cause of the Canoniza on of Junipero Serra, I will be proclaiming the biography of Junipero Serra in Spanish. Following this will be prayers and litanies, and the relic of Fray Junipero will be presented in the reliquary that was designed and cra ed by a neighbor on F Street, MariRose Jelicich, with Saturday Vigil 5:15 pm Sunday 7:30 am, 9:30 am, Noon During the liturgy, another Ohlone man, Vincent Medina, will proclaim the first reading in Chocheyo (the Ohlone language). This is almost a lost language, but is being revived by the young Ohlone people. Fr. Mel Jurisich, OFM and I will be near the Holy Father at the altar of celebra on during the Liturgy of the Eucharist, and I am sure that we will have the opportunity to meet him. The Holy Father will arrive in Washington D.C. from Cuba on Tuesday a ernoon, September 22. On Wednesday morning he will meet with President Obama and greet the people of the USA in front of the Capitol. There will be a motorcade following this audience. Weekend Masses her collaborator, Fr. Ron Schmidt, of the Oakland Diocese. Andy Galvan, an Ohlone Na ve American who has promoted the canoniza on of Fr. Serra for over 25 years, will make the presenta on of the reliquary to the Holy Father. This will be a great honor and privilege for Andy. Following the canoniza on, the reliquary will be presented to the Diocese of Monterey to be situated in a place of honor near the burial site of St. Junipero Serra at Mission San Carlos de Carmelo in Carmel, CA. Weekday Masses (in St. Clare Chapel) 12:10 pm Following the liturgy, there will be a recep on at the Franciscan Shrine of the Holy Land, near the site of the canoniza on, for many of the invited guests from California and others sponsored by the Cause for the Canoniza on of Junipero Serra. Dale Cor of Cor Brothers Grocery in Sacramento is providing a vintage wine from California Mission grape stock for the recep on, to honor St. Junipero On Thursday, September 24, there will be a Mass of Thanksgiving at the Franciscan Shrine of the Holy Land presided over by Michael Perry, OFM, Minister General of the Order of Friars Minor, and the homily will be delivered by Joe Chinnici, OFM, the renowned historian and scholar from the Province of St. Barbara. In addi on to those special guests from California, the en re Franciscan Family in the Washington D.C. area will be invited to this event and to a brunch. Our parish will be providing a live broadcast of the canoniza on liturgy in our church on Wednesday, September 23, at 1:15 pm. Our en re school will be present, and parishioners are invited to join them. It probably will be crowded! I am sure that there will be some press there to get the reac on of those a ending. For those not coming to the Church, EWTN Network will be broadcas ng live on their cable television channel with Time Warner Cable. For those who would like to link into the canoniza on via live Internet feed, the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops has a dedicated link for this purpose: h p://www.uspapalvisit.org/.
