Vincent Camus Inexact and Error Tolerant Circuit Design Applications Ø Inexact and error tolerant computing is a new paradigm wherein a small accuracy loss can be traded against significant efficiency improvements. Ø While cell phones and battery powered devices can benefit of this inaccuracy to reduce their energy consumption, high performance computing can benefit of higher number of operation and speed up for a given energy budget. vincent.camus@epfl.ch EPFL Neuchâtel Adviser Christian Enz 16.06.2014 – 15.06.2018 Ø Smart Energy × IcySoC Challenge Ø The challenge of inexact circuit design is to determine where and how to let approximation occur without compromising the functionality or the user experience. Methods and results Ø Various techniques, such as circuit pruning and circuit speculation have been investigated. Independently, they have shown significant gains in energy efficiency. Ø Software and algorithms have now to be developed in a cross-layer co-design approach, where optimizations are performed from the physical layer up to the algorithm layer.
