A NEWSLETTER FOR OUR CHURCH FAMILY AND FRIENDS
A Word from
the Pastor
“This is what the Lord says - he who
made a way through the sea, a path
through the mighty waters, who drew
out the chariots and horses, the army
and reinforcements together, and they
lay there, never to rise again, extinguished, snuffed out like a wick:
‘Forget the former things, do not dwell
on the past. See, I am doing a new
thing! Now it springs up; do you not
perceive it? I am making a way in the
desert, and streams in the wasteland.’”
Isaiah 43:16-19
There are times in a church’s life when
it seems like a lot of things all come
together at once - times when new
things seem to spring up in many
places simultaneously. This fall is shaping up to be one of those times.
To start off with, the Session will be
participating in our presbytery’s Acts
16:5 Initiative. Acts 16:5 says, “So the
churches were strengthened in the
faith and grew daily in numbers.” This
initiative is an intensive effort to help
the churches in our presbytery each
figure out God’s specific call to them,
given their circumstances and the
demographics of their areas. Then
each church will be trained and supported in reaching the people to whom
we are called in Jesus’ name. Stockton
Presbytery will cover the program
costs for us. The program will involve
several gatherings in Modesto each
year, to train, advise and support our
September 2012
next step will be. I take that as a sign
that God is moving to start some new
things in our congregation.
Session as we renew our efforts to
bring the good news of salvation to
those who need a second chance.
We already have a good idea of the
demographics of our area. The number
of school-aged children has been declining for the past 15 years, according
to the Union Democrat. However, the
proportion of retirees has been growing. Tuolumne County has one of the
oldest populations in California, with
Calaveras County not far behind. Our
effort to reach out to retirees has been
successful. In the past 3 years, we have
grown from 106 to 132 members even though 16 of our members have
died and 5 others have moved to areas
with more medical care. We can thank
the Lord that our church is one of the
very few Presbyterian churches that is
steadily growing.
So what is the Lord calling us to do
now? The Acts Initiative will help us to
determine that. This is an exciting
time to be an elder on Session! You
will be hearing more about it over the
coming year, and the whole congregation will be asked to get involved.
At the same time, the Men’s Breakfast
Fellowship group independently decided to start working on a strategic
plan for our church. They too are sensing a call to help figure out what our
Part of the discernment of the Lord’s
leading involves looking at the resources we have. To help us do that,
the Stewardship and Christian Education committees are joining together
to offer a two-session video class on
the joy of a simpler life. It is called
“Enough: Discovering Joy Through Simplicity and Generosity.” There will be
three different times and places for
you to participate in these classes during the month of October. You will
have your choice of two Thursday evenings at my house; or two Sunday afternoons at the Davis’ house; or two
Sundays right after church. I am asking
everyone in the church to attend.
The Isaiah passage doesn’t mean that
God’s people should completely forget
all that He has done for them. After all,
God is described as the one who has
done mighty things for His people such
as bringing them through the Reed
Sea. What it means is, we shouldn’t
live only on what God has done in the
past. We remember and are grateful,
and we also look to what God is doing
in the present and the future. I think
God is doing some new things in our
midst. This is an exciting time to be a
member of the Church of the 49ers!
Yours in Christ,
Pastor Janet

NURTURE—studying and teaching
God’s Word;
Prior to the formal business portion of the meeting, the Reverend
Troy Onsager of First Presbyterian Church, Escalon, presented the
concept of the Acts 16:5 Initiative to Session. The initiative offers
churches a three year committed process toward discovering “new
levels of vitality, faith and fruitfulness.” (So the churches were
strengthened in the faith and grew daily in numbers - Acts 16:5)
Stockton Presbytery is funding the initiative for its individual churches
who wish to engage as part of its “healthy churches” program. A formal roll-out is scheduled for October 12 and 13 and Session will be
well-represented. Interested members are invited to attend as well.
Session will decide upon its participation after the roll-out and the
entire program and commitment is understood.

OUR MISSION STATEMENT
The First Presbyterian Church of
Columbia (Church of the 49ers) exists
to glorify God and enjoy Him forever.
We seek to do this through:
WORSHIP—expressing our love for
God directly to Him;
OUTREACH—bringing the lost to a
saving knowledge of Jesus Christ; to be
committed to Him, His church, and His
work in the world.
We will seek to fulfill this purpose in a
way consistent with Scripture through
the Spiritual Gifts in our church. We will
strive to minister to the needs of ALL
people while being committed to Jesus
Christ, His church, and His work in the
world. In all things we will seek to be a
people of prayer, realizing our complete
dependence upon God the Father, the
Son and the Holy Spirit.
NOTE: Members are welcome to attend the monthly Session meetings,
typically held on third Thursdays at 3 p.m. in the Ramont Room.

Pirkko Dyer’s grand-niece Tuuli
Petaja won a silver medal in windsurfing in the Summer Olympics for
Finland!!! Tuuli means “wind” and
she is Pirkko’s sister’s granddaughter.
Tony Lertora was named a supervisor of the year for Cal Trans in
Central California. That means that
his stretch of Highway 108 is one of
the best maintained in the state!
Nora Neves reports that her granddaughter, Brynna, did really well on
the Star Testing last spring at Columbia Elementary School. Brynna’s
scores were listed as “advanced” on
both the English-Language Arts section, and the Math section. Brynna is
now a third grader. We see her up in
front during Children’s Moment with
Pastor Janet almost every Sunday.
Congratulations, Brynna!

Welcome Back Sunday & Ministry Fair - September 9
The Church of the 49ers family has
participated in Fall Kick-Off events
for many years, and the past few
Septembers we’ve added a Ministry
Fair to the mix. This will be a not-tobe-missed affair.
Following Sunday worship on September 9, plan to head over to Faith
Hall for a wonderful potluck lunch
with your church family. Perhaps this
would be a good time to ask a family
member, neighbor or friend to join
you, as everyone loves a potluck!
Marijean Davis and her Fellowship
Committee are organizing the potluck. So that we have an idea of how
many/what kind of dishes will be
brought on the 9th, please tell Marijean what you plan to bring -- Add it
to her sign up sheet on the 2nd, or
call her at 795-4630 or send email to
[email protected]. Also, if
you can help with set up or clean up,
she would love to hear about it.
Please do not bring a dessert to the
potluck! After lunch, all are invited
to visit the ministry exhibits and information booths set up in Faith Hall
by the various ministries of this
church. Find a perfect match for
your time and talent at the Ministry
Fair! That’s where you’ll find dessert
— at each booth.
And, for entertainment this year
we’ve invited Refined Gold, our gospel quartet, to sing a couple of oldtime barbershop songs for your listening pleasure.

Enough
Library
Discovering Joy
through Giving and Generosity
Your Stewardship Committee
is pleased to
sponsor
the
“Enough” program, a twosession
series
which will give
us an opportunity to explore
the meaning of
stewardship utilizing a DVD and discussion with other members of our congregation. The topics for learning and
discussion will be Wisdom and Finance,
Cultivating Contentment, Defining Generosity, and The New Normal.
We are offering THREE OPTIONS for
the two-session series during October:
1) Thursday evenings, October 4 and
18 at Pastor Janet’s home. Time is
7:30 to 9:00 p.m., and dessert will
be served.
2) Sundays after worship, October 7
and 21 at Gary and Leslie Davis’
home. Time is 11:30 to 1:30, and a
light lunch will be served.
3) Sundays after worship, October
14 and 28 at the church in Room 1
of the Christian Education Building.
Time is 11:30 to 1:30, and a light
lunch will be served.
The respective leaders will be Pastor
Janet, Gary Davis and Jim Brandt. Sign
up in Faith Hall on Sundays-September
9, 16, 23 or 30. An insert in the worship bulletins will also make it easy to
sign up. Reservations are important so
hosts can plan ahead.
First of all, I want to thank everyone
for all your donations of books to our
church library. Without you we wouldn’t have such a great library!
I encourage all of you who can make it
upstairs in Faith Hall to come up and
look it over. Books are shelved by Author and catalogued by Author and
Title.
I try to have someone manning the
cart of books downstairs in Faith Hall
every Sunday following worship - during Fellowship Time.
If you can’t get up the stairs and you
know which book(s) you want to check
out, call me at 694-8952 and leave a
message if necessary, or email me at
[email protected].
If we don’t have it I will try to get the
book for you. New books are being
added to our church library all the
time.
Thank you,
Bev Fernandez and Nora Neves

Bob Bryson
Memorial Rock
Perhaps you’ve noticed a new Columbia limestone rock near the walkway to
the sanctuary? It’s placed right near
where Bob Bryson, our master greeter
who went home to the Lord in July
2011, used to stand every Sunday. Neither snow, nor rain, nor blazing heat
stopped Bob from warmly greeting
everyone who came into our parking
lot. Visitors often commented on how
welcome he made them feel. One visitor even wrote a special letter to thank
the “dapper gentleman” in the parking
lot.
The Welcome and Evangelism committee (which Bob used to chair) thought
a memorial for Bob would be a good
idea, and an inspiration to continue his
ministry. A memorial rock, near where
he used to stand, and heavy enough to
deter theft, seemed most appropriate.
Bob’s family has blessed us by working
with Buildings and Grounds, and picking up most of the cost. So next time
you come to church, give Bobbie a hug.
Then take a look at the rock and make
an extra effort to greet someone. Let’s
be a whole congregation of friendly
people in the parking lot.

From the Field...
Greetings from the Amazon jungles in
northwestern Brazil! I’m in the last few
days of a 3-week training tour that has
taken me from the jungles of north
central Peru to Cusco, the capital of
the Incan Empire, high in the Andes
Mountains to my present location.
Here, we are teaching 15 indigenous
youth how to produce programs to
reach out to those in their tribal communities who don’t yet know Jesus
Christ as their personal savior.
One of the goals for HCJB Global
Voice’s radio training ministry in the
Latin America Region is to raise up likeminded Christian colleagues in the
area to be able to more quickly and
economically respond to future needs.
Let me introduce you to Kenny Lazo, a
young communicator from Arequipa in
southeastern Peru who trained with
me in his country. In 2009, Kenny received training by our team at a conference in southern Peru and in 2010
came to Quito for more training. However, this time the tables were turned.
The trainee became the trainer and
Kenny did a fabulous job and was well
received by all the participants. He has
even been invited back to speak at the
youth camp of one of the local church
denominations!
In Brazil, I am once again teaching
alongside Jasiel Martins. This is the
third time that we have taught together over the past several years.
Jasiel is a quiet young man from the
Terena indigenous group which primarily inhabits western central Brazil.
Here in Filadelfia, we are with participants representing five different tribal
groups! What a special opportunity to
see how God works to make sure His
Word can be heard by all nations and
all tongues. In February of 2008, Jasiel
received our training. And like Kenny,
he is now the trainer!
Jasiel, lft, teaches audio production to
two colleagues from Mayuruna tribe.
What a privilege to serve alongside
fellow communicators like Jasiel and
Kenny who have a passion to use media to reach those who don’t yet know
Christ or who have fallen away from an
intimate walk with Jesus. A few years
ago they were my students. Now we
stand together as fellow trainers!
Please pray for these colleagues as
God continues to form them, teach
them and prepare them for His service.
To God be all the glory and honor!

Community
Dinner Training
and Potluck September 10
In preparation for the next nine
months of serving weekly dinners to
our community on Monday evenings, a
special Community Dinner Training is
planned for Monday, September 10,
beginning at 5 p.m. If you want to help
with shopping, food prep, set up, serving, clean up, etc. for Monday Community Dinners, don’t miss this event.
Training will include a mini-course on
“Serving Safe Food,” instruction on the
workings of the church kitchen, and set
up, serving and clean up procedures.
We’re asking everyone to bring a potluck dish to share, and we’ll practice
our serving techniques on each other!
Also, if you like to cook, you and a
partner will have the opportunity to
sign up for a specific Monday to pull
together the community meal. Bring
your calendar so you’ll know when
you’re available for this task.
If you have not helped with Community Dinners in the past, and would like
more information, or
just have a
question,

Columbus Day - October 8
Veteran’s Day - November 12
Thanksgiving - November 22-23
Christmas - Dec 24-26
New Year’s - Dec 31-Jan 1
InterFaith clients are in need of tarps,
tents and camping gear. The household department is very low on small
appliances, such as toasters, irons,
microwaves, crockpots, coffee makers,
electric skillets, and toaster ovens.
Bath towels, silverware, pots and pans
are also in high demand.
If you came home from vacation with
collected toiletries from the hotels,
InterFaith clients can use them as well,
especially shampoos.
For all volunteers: please do not walk
through the grocery bagging area
while workers are preparing bags for
the clients. And please carefully check
dates on food packaging. Clients have
complained recently of receiving food

News of the Humanitarian
Crisis in Syria
The PC(USA) Special Offerings Department provided this update on the current work that Presbyterian Disaster
Assistance (PDA) is currently doing
with great support from your gifts to
One Great Hour of Sharing.
At this time, the Syrian Arab Red Crescent (SARC)—equivalent to our Red
Cross—estimates that approximately
1.5 million people have been displaced
since the beginning of the Syria crisis in
March 2011. Presbyterian Disaster Assistance is supporting our mission partner, the National Evangelical
(Presbyterian) Synod of Syria and Lebanon, and is working with our ecumenical partner, ACT (Action by Churches
Together) Alliance, to help meet the
needs of displaced families.
If you would like more information on
this developing situation, please visit

A Little Clarification

they are staying temporarily with their relatives at a school in Wadi Khaled, Lebanon, a
town just over the Syrian border. Photo by
Jamal Saidi/Reuters.
We’ve also been asked to pray for the
Syrian people:
Almighty God, creator of the world and
the nations, we bring before you all
those caught up in the conflict in Syria.
We pray for families who have been
forced to flee their homes; keep them
safe on their travels and arrival in foreign lands. We pray for those who are
experiencing the pain of personal loss
and for families who are mourning the
loss of loved ones. Guide the nation of
Syria into the way of justice and truth,
and establish among them that peace
which is the fruit of righteousness, that
they may become the kingdom of our
Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Amen.
On the Sundays when Communion is
served during worship, you should find
Communion Envelopes in the pew
racks. These envelopes are for donating money to the Deacons' Fund - If
you wish you can fill the envelope with
cash, or write a check to "First Presbyterian Church" and note on the memo
line that your donation is for the
"Deacons' Fund." This is collected as an
extra offering the first Sunday each
month. Your contributions are tax deductible, and are given to those in
need according to the deacons' guidelines.
Also, regarding donations placed in the
offering plate on any Sunday -- if you
write a check, please make it out to
"First Presbyterian Church" and note
on the memo line if the money is to go
to a specific area. If not noted, all donations go into our church's "General
Fund."
If you have not received a box of Giving Envelopes and would like one,
please contact Pat in the church office
at 532-2441, as we still have some
available.
