Bingham McCutchen Selects Lexington, KY for Global Services Center
The economic development team has great news
for Lexington – international law firm Bingham
McCutchen announced
they are locating their new
Global Services Center to
Lexington! After numerous rounds of responses to Requests for
Information and then many visits to Lexington by the consultant and
client team, the company chose Lexington for this new operation.
They first evaluated 300 metro areas, which was ultimately narrowed
down to Lexington! This was a tremendous group effort by all economic development partners and community leaders. Many individuals and teams from private industry, LFUCG, University of
Kentucky, Kentucky Cabinet for Economic Development and
Commerce Lexington came together to showcase the great attributes of Lexington.
Bingham’s decision to establish a Global Services Center in a
centralized location will create 250 jobs for Lexington. The company plans to invest over $22M in capital investment and lease costs
and plans to be operational by spring 2012. The job functions that
will be housed in this location are: finance and accounting, human
resources, information technology, marketing, operations and risk
management.
The company’s presence is felt globally with 14 offices in the U.S.
and internationally. They employ 1,000 lawyers and 900 support
staff worldwide.
“The Global Services Center will position us to operate even
more efficiently in an ever-changing, highly competitive economy,”
said Chairman Jay Zimmerman, adding that while the focus of the
effort is on centralizing U.S. administrative operations, its scope is
international. “After 15 years of significant growth by combinations,
we are consolidating our operations model to more efficiently support our lawyers around the world and, in turn, provide better service to our national and global client base. For Bingham, Lexington is
an excellent fit. I am impressed by the vitality of the city, the warmth
of the people and the business-friendly environment.”

First Chinese-owned Manufacturer in
Kentucky to Create Jobs in Lexington
Commerce Lexington Inc. is excited to announce the first Chinese
manufacturing company to Central Kentucky! Birtley, a subsidiary of
Shandon Borun Industrial Processing Equipment in China, has
announced it will locate a new coal processing equipment facility in
Lexington.
The company, which purchased land in Commerce Lexington Inc.’s
Blue Grass Business Park, will construct a new 67,500-square foot manufacturing building. Many partners were involved in assisting the company with its new location in the region, including the World Trade
Center Kentucky, the city of Lexington, and the Kentucky Cabinet for
Economic Development and Commerce Lexington Inc. The new project
will create 30 to 50 jobs, with a $10 million investment.
Shandong Borun has three manufacturing facilities in China. The
company’s products include machines used in coal preparation, mineral processing, and devices used in the power, steel, cement and port
industries. We’re excited to welcome this new international company to
Lexington!

in Atlanta on September 12. Fourteen site selection
consultants attended the luncheon and heard from

Since 1974, Holifield Photography has been in the business of making people look their very best. It all started when Jim Holifield bought his first
35mm camera in 1972 to photograph his baby daughter, Julie. Soon, his
family and friends started asking him to photograph weddings, families
and children. Then, Jim and his wife Theresa started a studio as a part-time
wedding photography business. About four years later, Holifield
Photography became the couple’s full-time endeavor. Through all the
years, the changing technology, equipment enhancements, and the advent
of digital photography, Holifield Photography continues to give back to the
community through its Youth Salute and Young Achievers programs,
which have recognized over 19,600 high school juniors, highlighting their
talents, interests and skills through photographic exhibits in schools and
shopping malls.

For 66 years, Lynn Imaging has been able to adapt to the changing
economic times and advances in technology. What was started in
1946 by husband-and-wife team, Jack and Marcella Lynn, has now
expanded to other markets and has 63 employees to serve its clients.
In the late 1970’s, the business was passed to son J.L. Lynn and fellow Lafayette High School classmate Mike Carter, both of whom are
still involved in the daily operations of Lynn Imaging. A big part of
Lynn’s longstanding success has been its ability to embrace new
technologies, such as digital reproduction, electronic data storage,
digital plan rooms, and the use of the Internet. Through the years, J.L.
and Mike have led Lynn Imaging through the age of technology with
the vision of keeping one eye on the horizon and one eye on the work
at hand. In the end, it has been Lynn Imaging’s fast, reliable, and
quality service that has kept customers coming back again and again.
Salute to Small Business Minority Business Award

The Holiday Inn Express Hotel & Suites, Northeast was built just four short
years ago, but it is already considered to be one of the best hotels in
Lexington. It may be smaller in stature compared to other area hotels, but
it’s big on customer service, promoting a family atmosphere among its
staff, and emphasizing workplace flexibility. Within a few years, the hotel has
seen rapid growth in revenue and occupancy, has been rated the secondbest among 1,800 Holiday Inn Express hotels, and has been recognized for
its excellence in quality and customer satisfaction with the Torchbearer
Award for three consecutive years. When it comes to customer service,
hotel owner Manish Patel believes that by treating his staff like a family, they
will show that same level of respect to the many customers that visit the
hotel.

While Sonitrol of Lexington has been around since 1969, Sonny and Pat Bates
purchased the company in 1984 and simultaneously began ADR Security
Services, which was re-branded to Bates Security in May 2011. Bates Security
and Sonitrol of Lexington is a locally-owned and operated security company,
specializing in the installation, monitoring and servicing of burglary, video,
access and fire systems. The security company has not only had to adapt to
changing technology in the protection of homes and businesses, but it has
also had to utilize cutting-edge technology to increase its own productivity
and profits. Today, the daily operations are driven by the Bates’ sons, Jeremy
and Bryan, who are also invested with ownership in the business. The company has realized a 16-percent growth rate in the last five years, increased its
workforce from 35 to 59 employees since 2009, and more than doubled its
accounts during that time.
OWL, Inc.

For more than 50 years, OWL has been serving Central
Kentucky’s most vulnerable populations by providing job training and placement services to clients with barriers to employment. From ages 16 to 60-plus, over 18,200 individuals with
disabilities have come through OWL’s doors and have found
services that launched them toward a brighter, more stable
vocational future. OWL is unique, because it is set up as a nonprofit corporation with much of its funds raised by the revenue
that its consumers generate, mostly through its manufacturing
arm. Today, OWL is comprised of three divisions, including the
OWL Center, the Skill Enhancement and Employment Center,
and the Lexington Manufacturing Center, which is OWL’s production division. OWL impacts the community and region
through its partnerships with other nonprofits, businesses,
and agencies.
Salute to Small Business Young Entrepreneur Award
J&H Lanmark – The Outdoors Store
George R. Lathram II, 189 Moore Drive, Lexington, KY 40503
With 40 years of history on its side, J&H Lanmark – The Outdoors Store has
not only overcome a recent change in ownership, but also continues to battle major competition from “big box” retailers and online shopping. When
George Lathram II purchased J&H in 2006 from one of the store’s original
founders John Hall, Lathram said it had been his dream to one day own J&H
and carry on Hall’s legacy. George had worked at J&H from the time he was
16 years old until he graduated from the University of Kentucky, and that
experience is now paying off. Since he acquired J&H, the store’s sales have
nearly doubled in six years and its square footage has increased by 50-percent. Additionally, both full-time and part-time positions have been added.
Lathram said, “We try to serve our customers better than what they would
receive anywhere else, and that’s what has gotten us from 1972 to 2012.”

this present business environment, business owners need to know
that a support structure exists to help them. An "ENROLLMENT
EVENT" will be held on Wednesday, November 7, from 7:30-9:00
a.m., at Commerce Lexington Inc. (330 East Main St.).
Group placements for Commerce Lexington Inc. business members are made twice per year for the various boards. Since the goal
is for members to make a long-term commitment to the groups, the
twice-a-year placement process helps to facilitate a more effective
assimilation of new members into the groups.
This upcoming Enrollment Event will enable members to meet
other group participants and ask questions, learn more about this
free program in general, and even sign up to become a member of
a Business Owner Advisory Board.

Small Business Owners Find Answers in
Business Owners Advisory Board
Although interaction with fellow Commerce Lexington Inc.
members is always good for business - BOAB is not designed as
a networking or leads group. Each board is made up of eight
business owners with similar concerns, but who are NOT in
direct competition with each other. There is NO CHARGE to
participate in this program, which is open only to Commerce
Lexington members. Board members commit to meet on a
monthly basis for two to three hours per meeting, and each
group sets its own agenda. The boards offer encouragement
and sound business advice for tackling the day-to-day challenges faced by business owners. Meetings are structured to
include speakers on various business topics, guidance on goal
setting, marketing planning as well as assisting with your individual business issues. A few hours a month provides a wealth
of benefit to participants.

One group of 30 departed on Aug. 16,
while about 60 people departed the
U.S. on Aug. 23 with Hurricane Isaac
bearing down on the country. For

On the morning of September 5,
forty-five of Lexington’s high school
juniors walked into the stunning
Carnegie Center; too tired to appreciate its beauty! The group of students had never met, but the program director of Leadership
Lexington, Amy Carrington, left no
time for awkward silences, launching us directly into get-to-know-you
games.
Once we had been properly introduced and energized, in marched
Lieutenant Colonel Jason Cummins,
professor of military science for the UK ROTC program. Many of us felt very out of place, shouting
army cadences in the Carnegie Center, but it sure
filled us with excitement for the rest of the day.
Assigned to random groups, we were led by UK
ROTC cadets in team-building exercises for the first
half of the day. As promised by Lieutenant Colonel
Cummins, we felt a stronger team bond and sense of
trust after just a couple hours, than we might have
OCTOBER 2012
after a couple of months!
The second half of the day became less physical,
and more reflective. Grace Gorrell, who owns her
own leadership training business, helped us to
explore not only what leadership meant in the broader sense of the word, but also how it directly affects
us and our own personality type. If the first day is any
indication, we are going to have a fun, enlightening,
and growth filled year ahead of us on our road to
becoming stronger leaders in our community.

2012-13 CLASS PRESENTED BY:
The 2012-13 session of Leadership Lexington began on Sept.
13. The day’s objective was to explore Lexington’s historic background by visiting different sites in the city.
After breakfast, the class walked down Main Street to the
public library, where Lance Williams shared encouraging information about the project that he was part of when he was in
Leadership Lexington three years ago. Williams said the team
still gets together for lunch. They call themselves LUV
Lexington: Lexingtonians United Vicariously. Their project was
to host a community resource fair. Ann Hammond, executive
director of the library, brought greetings to the group. She
reported the library is more popular than Keeneland and UK
sports, and Lexington has been declared the nation’s most eliterate city.
The majority of the morning session was led by Lt. Col Jason
Cummins, a veteran of Iraq and Afghanistan and director of the
ROTC program at UK. He did a presentation on his leadership
development initiative called Relentless Pursuit, which encourages “optimal performance through purposeful living and
leading.”
In the afternoon, Lexington Mayor Jim Gray joined the class
to briefly share some of the good news that’s happening in
Lexington. He talked about the new hotel/museum called 21C
that will take over the First National Bank building downtown;
a new law firm establishing its home center in Lexington; and
plans to make a new entertainment district. Gray’s ultimate
goal is to make Lexington into a great American city, much as
Henry Clay, a famous resident, envisioned. “Lexington sells
itself,” Gray said.
The class also heard from Jamie Millard, president and CEO
of the Lexington History Museum. Back at Commerce
Lexington, the group heard from two alumni, Holli Powell and
Dawn Pope (Class of 2012), who shared insights about their
Once Upon a Story Literacy Fair project.
After a brief recap with Ryan Lisk and sharing from the different teams on the progress of their projects, the group went
to Trust for their social hour wind down. Classmate Andy Shea
is one of the owners of this refurbished downtown bar.
