A humorous story I remember from our freshman
year was when I came in quite late to a social
studies class. After handing the teacher a note, I
sat down in my desk in front of Dick O’Connor.
Dick leaned forward and asked where I’d been. I
replied that I’d been at the county courthouse
getting my citizenship papers. Dick said that was
great, now I could join the mafia without fear of
being deported. I have been waiting to tell him
for years that he was wrong - the Mafia won’t
take me. - Winnie Larsen Hogoboom

To prepare for college I knew that during my
Senior year I should take speech. I was insecure
to face the class and needede to do something to
pull up my grade. I choose to do a Negro
monologue and be someone else for my semester
final. I went home and prepared myself and
clothes including a black wig hat, black stockings
and heels, multi-colored plaid, long-sleeved
taffeta dress with loads or crinolines, black
gloves, and blackened my face with soot and
cream and added bright red lipstick. I had asked
Mr. Trent if I could be first so I could enter the
side stage door to be a surprise when I came out
from behind the curtain. I guess that’s what it
took for me to get that grade... be someone other
than myself. I think that being on stage is a great
