century, strongly influenced by the art of Martin Schongauer,
illustrate different scenes from the Passion of Christ and the
Life of the Virgin. The Last Judgement on the back of the
central panel, although having suffered some deterioration,
offers a terrifying vision of the damned burning in hell.

The Golden Age in the Upper Rhine
Discovering the Rhenish Primitives (15th–16th centuries): A Cultural Tour in Alsace
This tour focusing on the Rhenish primitives offers you the opportunity to
discover rare works of art while visiting a number of picturesque Alsatian
towns and villages, along the celebrated Routes des Vins d’Alsace.
Alsace is an ideal place to appreciate Rhenish art. In addition to the collection
of the Musée Unterlinden in Colmar, without equal in France, there are a
number of other sites where remarkable paintings and sculptures from the
Middle Ages and the early years of the Renaissance may be viewed.
The movement formed by the artists of the Upper Rhine (Strasbourg, Colmar,
Freiburg im Breisgau, Basel), referred to as the “Rhenish primitives” by art
historians, produced a rich variety of painted wooden panels and polychrome
sculptures.
The altarpieces that graced the altars of churches during this period were
comprised either uniquely of painted panels, of painted panels combined with
a central segment containing sculptures in the round, or uniquely of sculpted
panels.
Some of these altarpieces have survived into the present day. You are certain
to be impressed by the intimacy of gesture and naturalism found in the works
of these artists, on view in the churches and museums on this Upper Rhine
tour, extending over 100 kilometres.
