Yet, here we are, 12 months further on and I am about to perform one of my final acts as President in welcoming you to our 40th Congress & Exhibition in Vilamoura, Portugal. What is it they say about “time flying”? One thing I can say about the intervening 12 months since our last event is that in whatever branch of our industry you operate I am sure you will have been working hard. As we all know, standing still in business is not an option because, in reality standing still is going backwards. So it is then that I find myself about to introduce you to our congress theme of “Explore Beyond Borders”. Like all good congress themes (and I like this one!) it draws its inspiration in part from our location – partly from our trading history since the last congress and partly from the challenges that face us all in the weeks and months ahead. Look at any period of history and you are bound to find notable Portuguese explorers and adventurers taking centre stage. Henry the Navigator, Ferdinand Magellan and Vasco da Gama to mention just three. The passage of time has changed little. These early explorers were motivated at least in part by the search for commercial achievement. Markets for goods and services at home were of a certain size and development. In order for Portugal to grow and prosper in these times it needed to explore beyond its natural borders. And so it is today. We each operate our businesses in a particular way – within a defined geographic area or within a defined product or applications niche – or maybe a combination of these. But is it enough? Can this focus sustain us? Or do we need to take a lesson from the history books of our host country and explore…..explore other markets – explore other product opportunities – explore other applications….in short, should we Explore Beyond Borders? Erik Smidt President, EFCLIN 5 Explore Beyond Borders EXPLORE BEYOND BORDERS WHERE WILL YOU BE FROM 9 th-11 th MAY? Your competitors will be at the 40th EFCLIN Congress & Exhibition where they will be able to attend engaging lectures and manufacturers’ forums, as well as the largest exhibition and networking session in the Contact Lens and IOL industry..... shouldn’t you be with them? 9 –11th May 2013 Vilamoura, Portugal ACT NOW WHILE THERE IS STILL TIME! As usual we are expecting to be joined by delegates from all parts of our industry – suppliers of machinery, tooling, materials, instrumentation & consumables as well as lens manufacturers, administrators, consultants, clinicians and practitioners. As is usual, a real cross-section. There is also a sense of “experimentation” about our event this year – in particular, the choice of venue. Historically the EFCLIN Congress has tended to take place in city centre locations. Each year however the EFCLIN board receives a number of suggestions from members for possible future congress destinations. You may recall my writing on the subject of choosing a congress venue in the past. In particular I know that many readers were surprised by the way in which a promising list of potential destinations was reduced to a very short short-list once the EFCLIN selection criteria of floor space/electrical supply/access/room quality/availability/ rate etc. were applied. This year we added a further complication (by popular demand) in choosing a “resort” style destination. This is one of the great “congress organizer” conundrums. Do you choose a congress venue solely for its great transport links, equidistance from all delegates homes, great meeting rooms & cheap accommodation rates? Or do you add in other factors like a latitude that could deliver nicer weather….a greater selection of good restaurants, an ocean front and maybe a golf course or two? The answer of course is a blend of all these factors…a balance between the purely functional and the desirable. In the Crowne Plaza, Vilamoura we sincerely believe that balance has been achieved. An excellent meeting space served by good quality public spaces and lovely bedrooms. Add in the Algarve’s special ingredient of the Atlantic Ocean, some excellent Portuguese food & wine plus enough sporting diversions to fill a two week holiday and it’s almost perfect. Almost perfect? Well, that depends on our delegates. Why? Because it’s the delegates that really make a congress. Registering in sufficient numbers, attending the lecture programmes & workshops, networking at the exhibition and taking part in the social activities and dinners – that’s what makes a congress really work….over to you! Steve Wheeler EFCLIN Executive Director 7 Explore Beyond Borders 8 Location Vilamoura, Algarve Located on southern Atlantic Ocean facing coastline, Vilamoura is located in the famous Central Algarve region. With its 1,000 berth marina and vast selection of high quality apartment and hotel accommodation Vilamoura offers something for everyone. Every kind of outdoor entertainment is available with an obvious strong emphasis on the Ocean. For those who like to stay on “dry land” the Golf Courses, Walking and Cycling trails of this area are some of the best in Portugal. Vilamoura is however probably most famous for its beaches…vast stretches of golden sand contrasting with the deep blue waters of the Atlantic Ocean. Vilamoura offers a huge choice of Restaurants that cater for all tastes and all budgets. The distinctly “Southern European” practice of a pre dinner promenade along the restaurant fronts studying the menu offerings is a pleasure in itself. If nightlife is your thing then the many bars & clubs of Vilamoura will not disappoint. You can even try your luck at the Casino……just don’t blame us if your luck runs out! 9 Explore Beyond Borders Where to go, What to do? For a real taste of Algarve luxury, Vilamoura resort is a must-see place to visit or to holiday! It is the biggest private tourism resort in Europe and is one of the most prestigious in Portugal. Vilamoura marina is the main centre of activity with a huge range of restaurants, bars and shops (including many designer shops). Luis Figo’s ‘Bar Sete’ (bar seven) is also on the marina front. During the day, although it can get quite busy, it’s really a very peaceful area to stroll around. It gets more lively at night, with everyone coming to eat and try out some of the bars, but is still a very relaxed resort. Boasting a 1,000-berth marina, Vilamoura attracts the wealthy, yachtsmen, golfers, celebrities and in fact, anyone who just fancies enjoying a rather nice place in the sun! Vilamoura has something for everyone to enjoy - there are boat trips (for those of us who don’t own a boat!), specially designed trails for walking and cycling and restaurants and bars to suit all tastes and budgets. The resort is also home to Vilamoura Casino, which has regular evening entertainment, such as shows and dances, as well as the gaming rooms. If you want to go further afield to get more of a feel for the Algarve there are plenty of places within easy reach. Loulé, famous for its Saturday gypsy market and Brasilian style carnivals, is a lovely interesting town to visit. It has a 13/14th century castle, an excellent daily market in its new market hall and often has music festivals during the summer. 10 Our Congress Hotel The Ocean Front location of the Crowne Plaza Hotel Vilamoura is the perfect setting whatever your reason for being here…business or pleasure…why not both? A 30 minute drive from Faro International Airport the hotel occupies a prime spot within Vilamoura and is just a few minutes stroll from the bustling marina with all its vibrant colour, activities, bars & restaurants. This 11 floor property boasts 327 fine rooms, 18 of which are suites. With a large outdoor swimming pool and numerous terraces, opportunities for relaxation abound. You can also enjoy the wonderful spa and its extensive facilities. Meetings and Congress space is second to none with bright, comfortable and airy spaces that add a relaxed atmosphere to any event. As well as all the normal services that might be expected from a quality hotel the Crowne Plaza also offers guests:• • • • • • 11 Sauna Fitness Centre Indoor Heated Pool Hammam WiFi Connectivity Throughout Business Centre Facilities Explore Beyond Borders Congress Speakers Helmer Schweizer, MBA Being a trained optometrist (Germany) Helmer Schweizer soon specialized in contact lenses and joined the CL industry after some years in private practice. Dr Tavares Correia. 16 Exhibition The Exhibition portion of the EFCLIN Congress has become famous for being more than just an exhibition! A quick “straw poll” amongst EFCLIN members found that many regard the exhibition hours at the congress to be some of the most productive business networking that they undertake. That’s quite a nice bonus from an organisers point of view. However, the core principles of providing delegates with an opportunity to speak to all the major suppliers to the Contact Lens and IOL industries remain. At the time this programme goes to print I am happy to report that we are poised to welcome all our usual exhibitors as well as one or two “new faces” to the EFCLIN exhibition forum. We expect to welcome exhibitors from all over the world and there is always a good spread of expertise covering such fields as:- Materials, Metrology Instrumentation, Micro Precision Machining, Diamond Tooling, Compressed Air Equipment, Accessories , Manufacturing Consumables and much, much more. We would like to offer our thanks to all our exhibitors & sponsors and all those advertising in this Programme Guide. It’s your sponsorship that gives us this, now famous event – Thank You. Commercial Presentations Regular EFCLIN Congress attendees will notice a change this year in relation to how commercial presentations are handled. At recent congresses we have tried various ideas to provide an appropriate focus on commercial presentations & messages. Instead of creating a separate lecture theatre this year will see a trial of featuring short 10 minute commercial presentations at key points in the main lecture programme. We hope this will make life easier for delegates and sponsors alike….at least there are fewer lecture rooms for delegates to search for! 17 Explore Beyond Borders Congress Programme at a Glance Thursday 9th May 08.00 -12.30EFCLIN Golf Tournament 12.00 -19.00 Congress Registration Open 13.00 -19.00Exhibit hall Open 18.00 -19.00Exhibitors Welcome Reception Sotavento Sotavento Sotavento Friday 10th May 09.00-17.00 Partner Programme Assemble in Lobby @ 0845 Lectures Fitting & TechnicalBarlavento 09.00 – 09.05Introduction 09.05 – 09.30 Myopia Control & Topography P. One is suited to an audience with a background or interest in Contact Lenses, the other is for those working in the IOL industry. Lectures begin at the same times in both areas. Contact Lens Lecture Programme Barlavento 09.00-09.05 Session Opened by EFCLIN President 09.05-09.30 Myopia Control & Topography – Patrick Caroline Today, specialty contact lens designs, that include scleral GP’s and custom soft contact lenses, have solved many of the fitting issues that have plagued corneal contact lenses since the 1950’s. However, with these new modalities come a number of unique complications that need to be addressed by both the patient and the eye care practitioner alike. Throughout this lecture we will review these new complications and discover how they can be identified and resolved with modern instrumentation and knowledge. 09.35-09.45 09.50-10.15 Commercial Presentation Technology and the Evolution of a Lens – Scott Brown This is the story of how a new gas permeable contact lens gets from a concept through to market. Topography, OCT, CAD design, ‘freeform’ manufacture and clinical photography have all enabled evolution of new contact lens designs. Optometrist Scott Brown will show how each technology has impacted on contact lens fitting and how by integrating all the technologies we understand what works well for patients and where as an industry we need to go. 10.20-10.40 Coffee Break 10.45-11.10 Quality Control In High Speed Production – Dr Johannes Pfund Currently lenses of all kinds can be produced in higher & higher volumes as a result of growing degrees of automation, system integration and sophistication available within the complete molded or lathed production process. Metrology systems must also keep pace by providing fewer steps, increased measurement speed and improved reliability. This can be achieved by sophisticated use of wavefront sensors, imaging techniques and sophisticated illumination methods. 23 Explore Beyond Borders Programme Friday 10th May (Cont.) 11.15-11.25 11.30-11.55 Commercial Presentation Ortho K in Children – What are you missing? Dr Andrey Kovalev Retrospective analysis of 2 groups of myopic patients matching in age, sex and degree of myopia followed up for 4 years. 1245 – were corrected by Ortho K (Ortho K group) and 144 – were using glasses or Soft Contact Lenses (Control group). Age from 8 to 18 years: mean 14.4±2.6 for CRT and14.6±3.0 for control. Axial/Mixed/Refractive Myopia in CRT and control: 606/404/235 and 71/45/28 patients. Standard investigations including refraction (for CRT patients – refraction over lens (ROL)), U/S biometry and physical efficiency of ciliary muscle (accommodative reserves in D) (ARD) were performed every 6 months. 12.00-12.10 12.15-12.40 Commercial Presentation The Lost Knowledge & Art of Soft Contact Lens Fitting – Eef van der Worp & Helmer Schweizer As with any lens, soft contact lenses can, if fitted incorrectly impact eye health. Historically things were simpler – one material, one brand but multiple options for diameter and base curve. Today, ECPs are most likely select one of the mass produced alternatives. Replacement frequency, material & brand are considered followed by power and then, to a lesser degree diameter and base curve. Has true “fitting” of soft lenses become a lost art? Do ECP’s have enough knowledge about lens designs and their effects? When switching to a custom made soft contact lens would they even know what to order or what to change? 12.45-12.55 13.15 13.00-17.30 24 Commercial Presentation Lunch served in Exhibit Hall Exhibition Hall Open Sotavento Programme Friday 10th May (Cont.) IOL Lecture Programme Atlantico 09.00 – 09.05 Session Opened 09.05 – 09.40 Metrology Challenges with Toric MF IOL’s - Dr Luc Joannes Accurate measurement of toric multifocal IOLs present a significant challenge. Up to 6 focus points may be required as well as ensuring conformity of the toric access to the reference axis. Time consuming and difficult at least, this presentation proposes some solutions. 09.45 – 10.20 Advancements in Micro Milling Onik Bhattacharyya This presentation will address the latest advancements in micro milling technologies and micro machining centers as it relates to the IOL industry. 10.20 – 10.40 10.40 – 11.15 Coffee Break Innovation in IOL & CL Mould Production Dr Benjamin Bulla Hardened steel moulds cannot be machined by diamond tools directly. Mould inserts are coated with nickel-phosphorous to allow machining. This coating is expensive, time consuming and of limited life. The presentation shows ultrasonic assisted machining, allowing direct diamond turning of hardened steel. 11.20 – 11.55 12.00 – 12.35 13.15 Speciality IOLs Ken Payne – A World of Manufacturing Considerations IOL Lecture 5 Dr Tavares Correia Lunch Served in Exhibit Hall Sotavento 17.45-18.30 EFCLIN Annual General Meeting Barlavento The AGM will be held in the main lecture theatre. Is this the solution - or is it the end of the business? Your practitioners have many questions: Do we need our customers? Do we avoid the internet or embrace it? How many customers have we already lost? 09.35 – 0945 09.50 – 10.15 Commercial Presentation Serve The Profession? Armin Duddek The modern optometrist is a well trained specialist. The profession needs a strong industry to ensure the highest and safest level of vision care and products. Modern technology is the norm for most Optometrists, although in some parts of Europe it is less common. 10.20 – 10.40 10.45 – 11.10 Coffee Break Modern Marketing Claire Venezia – Target & Connect with Customers The advantage of marketing within a specialized industry is the ability to target customers and deliver to their specific needs. Learn how to conduct research, listen to customers and learn their priorities. What are the GP trends with ECPs? What do patients think about their lenses and the ECPs that fit them? Utilize customer information to develop programs and materials that make marketing feel like a service to the customer. 11.15 – 11.25 Commercial Presentation 11.30 – 11.55 New Medical Device Regs John Parker – New Opportunity? In Europe we have now lived with the requirements of the Medical Device Directive since 1993. However, it has become apparent that there are some issues with this system i.e. PIP Breast Implants in France. On 26th September 2012 the European Commission published a proposal to replace the MDD with a regulation. What changes can be expected and what is likely to happen to the cost of compliance? 26 Programme Saturday 11th May (Cont) 12.00 – 12.10 12.15 – 12.40 Commercial Presentation Industry Code Of Conduct Helmer Schweizer Many may see codes as an unnecessary burden and typical examples of over-regulation (even if adoption of it is 100% voluntary). This is a good example of the glass being either half empty or half full. The paper will present the value of having, knowing and possibly adhering to the code may be beneficial for all players in the industry. It can also be used in ways and circumstances that some may not have considered. It may even be protective for ones business. 12.45 – 12.55 13.15 13.00-17.30 Commercial Presentation Lunch Served in Exhibit Hall Exhibition Hall Open Manufacturers Forum – Manufacturing Methods & Tooling 09.30-09.35 Introduction Sotavento Atlantico Graham Avery If prism free blocking is the goal then some common practices need examination. Many are blocking both the lens blank and the base curve. But, many de-block the blank for polishing and re-block it for fronts. Advantage? Efficiency, accuracy? Perhaps not straining the blank in a collet gives improved optics. But what about material/compound separation and pour optics. Lathe speeds and feeds, diamond condition all influence the polishing process and outcome. A lot to discuss!
