WIPSA August 2016
WELCOME
We're long past the halfway mark of 2016 and silly season is fast approaching, with flowers starting to
bloom and temperatures slowly rising; all looks set for a productive and fast-paced final quarter.
With many IPSA events taking place over the last few months we still have one exciting key event to
come in October. Make sure to book your 4-ball spot for the IPSA Western Cape Annual Golf Day,
details on page 2.
FEEDBACK
The all new IPSA Trivia Quiz
Well, they say all good things must come to an end. But, of course, where there’s
an end there’s also a beginning – in this case the Western Cape Region’s Annual
Quiz is entering a new phase for those brave enough to enter.
Rosalie Duke has masterfully managed the Western Cape Region’s Annual Quiz
for a staggering 14 years! It’s a big task, which she’s handled with her usual super
efficiency and slightly evil streak (the questions seem to get harder by the year).
However, the time has come to hand over the reins.
Addressing the 12 teams who entered this year’s quiz, Rosalie explained that she
was being joined by Ingrid Schoeman as co-host. This was the precursor to 2017

questions she fired off later that evening, there’s still no hope for a free ride to
event’s coveted sponsored prizes.
Another new feature to keep entrants on their toes was a series of ‘game-changer’ rounds that proved
necessary, particularly at the end of the fourth round when the top five teams were separated by just five points.
As in years gone by, the evening was yet another unmitigated success with a broad mix of trivia to ensure that
everyone knew something.
The Packaging Irregulars took first place, followed by the Maverick Movers & Shakers, and the 5Ps in second and
third places respectively. Three Non-Blonds and the Pack Hacks came fourth and fifth but, as always, nobody
from the 12 competing teams went home without a prize.
An event such as this isn’t possible without generous sponsorship. The region’s sincere thanks go to its prize
sponsors: Aerosol & Cosmetic Works, African Pride Wines, Cape Foods, Chill Beverages, Distell, Heineken, Indigo
Brands, iWrite, Logo Print, Pioneer Foods, Vinpro, Vital Health Foods and Wildekrans.
The Western Cape Committee thanks Rosalie for establishing the Annual Quiz as a firm favourite
on the region’s calendar, and wishes Ingrid Schoeman well as she continues this legacy.

EDUCATION
INTRODUCTION TO PACKAGING TECHNOLOGY
INTRODUCTION TO
PACKAGING TECHNOLOGY
The second IPT course is underway. We wish the students very good luck with
their studies.
The course is suitable for those very new to packaging (for example, school leavers
interested in this field as a possible vocation, or perhaps newly-recruited
employees/first time workers). It is very practical and hands on in its approach.
If you are interested in enrolling for the next course, please contact Rosalie on
[email protected].
ADVANCED PACKAGING DIPLOMA
L
ENRO
NOW
The great news is that Advanced Diploma is back in the Western Cape next year. If you are interested in
furthering your packaging education, please think about signing up as this opportunity only comes up again
three years later.
This course builds on the One Year Diploma and is aimed at packaging professionals who are looking to move
into management level positions. It deals with the role of packaging in all aspects of the business hierarchy.

PACK FACT: Packaging Possibilities
Have you ever wondered what packaging could look like in a few years’ time?
Here are some ideas that may or may not make product a whole lot more fun in the future:
1) Touch sensitive packaging would work with the warmth of your hand. A product could change
colour in your hand, or reveal design or copy elements when handled.
Even temporary embossing of packs when traced against a logo on the internal product.
We all know that when the product is in your hand it is as good as in the basket – and this would
pretty much guarantee interaction.
2) Scent inclusion in re-sealable devices so that brand new aroma releases every time you open a pack
– think of the implications for coffee and confectionary!
3) Cook in packs that expand into a bowl when hot
water is added.
4) Beeswax packaging for dry grains that peels like
an orange
5) Edible wrappers for food and beverage made from
ultra-thin membranes
6) Packs that mimic browning as the product inside
expires
