Welcome from the Rector
Dear Students,
I am delighted that you have taken an interest in the Jagiellonian University.
We are one of the oldest universities in Europe and the oldest one in Poland. Since our
foundation in 1364, the Jagiellonian University has played an essential role on the world academic
map. It is here that some of the world’s most famous intellectuals studied, including Nicolaus
Copernicus – the man who moved the Earth and stopped the Sun – and Karol Wojtyła – later
Pope John Paul II, all shaping the world into what it is today. Presently, our students continue to
make huge strides in their lives. Let it be discovering a comet, or being the first African man to cross
his continent from the North to the South, JU students are still making a name for themselves.
We are a modern academic centre cooperating internationally with over 500 universities
across the world. Our aim is to prepare young people to individually solve the tasks presented
by contemporary life, and engage with the great challenges of our society. Each year, over 50
thousands students can appreciate a vast variety of courses and programmes both in Polish and
foreign languages, of every discipline – from medicine and chemistry through economics and
management, to history and arts. Not only the multidisciplinary education, but also the secrets of a
wondrous history and culture of Krakow, that are buried beneath every cobblestone, are waiting for
you to discover!
Make your mark in the history of Krakow, explore your passions and discover your vocation here
at the Jagiellonian Univeristy! Choosing our university will be a decision you will never regret, nor
forget!

JAGIELLONIAN UNIVERSITY
Krakow and Poland
Located at the heart of Europe, Poland is a beautiful country bridging the ‘East’ and ‘West.’ It is
traditionally a borderland of both western and eastern European cultures and both of their nurturing
influences are still visible today, making the country fascinating and unique. Embraced by the Baltic
Sea in the North and cradled by the Carpathian Mountains from the South, Poland is a popular
destination where everyone can always find something appealing.
Top reasons for choosing Krakow as a place to study…
Krakow is the former royal capital and it
currently is the second largest city in Poland.
It is the home to the Jagiellonian University,
the second oldest university in Central Europe.
It also proudly possesses a highly unique
historical district called Old Town, which
is recognised on UNESCO’s world heritage
list. The stunning Old Town, with Europe’s
largest medieval market square (particularly
unchanged since the Middle Ages), the old
Jewish district in Kazimierz and the masterpiece of urban planning, Nowa Huta district,
all increasingly make Krakow a intensifying
magnet for visitors. Thanks to its heritage,
Krakow has become an illustrious lure for
tourist investors, artists, writers, scientists
and students. It has an alluring charm and a
creative, metaphysical and inspirational energy,
which attract people to study, work and live
here.
GUIDE FOR INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS
05
The city’s vibrant and time-honoured
atmosphere captivates many young
individuals. With almost twenty higher
education institutions with some 170,000
students enrolled, Krakow is a city that
treasures and devotes itself to students. With
relatively cheap costs of living compared to
other cities in Europe, Krakow attracts many
foreigners whose presence enhances this
historical city’s multicultural ambiance.
Krakow is a city of contrasts, with numerous
churches neighboring trendy pubs, a medieval
Market Square encompassed by modern
restaurants and gardens, and a vast shopping
mall (Galeria Krakowska) bordering the
chess-board street layout of the old town.
Moreover, Krakow was named by The New
York Times as Poland’s first choice for younger
people.
Errol Tapiwa Muzawazi
“Krakow is established as the best place in Poland for studying. The level of
competence is high in terms of university administration and availability of didactic
material. I have been able to learn more of the importance of adaptability, flexibility
and tolerance. As I come from a different country (with different values and
cultures), it has been very important to learn to live, work and cooperate with
different people.”
Zimbabwe, winner of the Guinness World Records for Longest Lecture, held at
JU and Law student.

Jagiellonian University
First founded in 1364, the Jagiellonian University (JU) has been an integral part of Krakow’s life for
almost 650 years. The University’s importance on the international scene dates back to the 15th
century when some 44% of the entire student population came from abroad! Today, with its growing
curriculum and course lists offered in foreign languages, JU is once again drawing in an increasing
number of the world’s best students to its ancient halls and modern campus.
With over 50,500 students enrolled,
3,614 academic teachers and over
500 distinguished professors, JU
provides 129 professionally focused
courses areas in the most notable
fields. For the past few years, JU has
consistently occupied top positions in
various ranking of the best universities
in Poland. Its Bachelor’s, Master’s and
Doctorate degrees are recognised
worldwide. With its outstanding level
of teaching and being held in high
regard on the international map of
education, studying as a degree or
exchange student is an unforgettable
personal experience, as well as
life-time academic and professional
investment.

history of art, psychology). Some of the courses are of more
general character ( e.g. philosophy) and some are related to
Poland (e.g. history). The main emphasis is put on modern

phenomena. This approach allows students to see the most
basic and disputable aspects of the human studies from a
global perspective.

their home universities, but they are also given opportunities to take other courses outside of their
study interests. They may choose to take courses taught in Polish or in a foreign language (mostly
English), which JU offers in a wide variety of disciplines. For more information on these courses,
please visit the chapter “Courses Taught in Foreign Languages.”

Exchange Opportunities for European Students
Erasmus
This programme is only applicable to students from the EU and member candidate states as well as
other partner countries (Iceland, Liechtenstein, Croatia, Norway, Turkey and Switzerland). Participating
institutions sign agreements either on a departmental level or on a faculty level. Each department
or faculty appoints an Erasmus Coordinator who participates in the selection process of outgoing
students and offers course assistance to incoming students. The agreement specifies the number
of students who can participate in the exchange and the length of their stay abroad (3 months to
one year). Selected participants receive a student mobility grant as an additional support in covering
expenses related to living abroad. For more information, please visit:
www.bosz.uj.edu.pl
CEEPUS
The Central European Exchange Programme for University Studies has 16 member countries (Albania,
Austria, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Macedonia, Moldova,
Montenegro, Poland, Romania, Serbia, Slovakia, Slovenia, and Kosovo). This exchange programme
is offered between specific departments at the member universities. For more information and the

Planning Your Stay
So you’ve made the right choice and you have decided to come and study at the JU! Feeling lost and
confused with what you should do now? This next section will help guide you through the process.
Visas
Citizens of non-EU/EEA member states will need a visa. Polish law explicitly confirms that all non-EU/
EEA citizens studying at a Polish university are required to be in possession of a valid student visa or
Residence Card for their entire periods of study.
The short-term visas entitle foreign students to stay in Poland for up to three months; the long-term
visas for a maximum of 12 months. Extension for visas can only be done once, so it is important to
apply for a visa for the whole planned period of stay in Poland.
*Polish visas CANNOT be obtained in Poland, they must be obtained at a Polish Consulate outside of Poland.
For more information please visit: www.msz.gove.pl/Visa,requirements,2346.html
GUIDE FOR INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS
45
Residence Permits
For a stay of up to three months no Residence Permit is required. Foreign students who are already
residents in Poland on a visa when they start their studies (for example for work) and students whose
programme length exceeds the period of time on which they may stay on student visas, will need to
get a temporary residence card (karta pobytu). Students have the residence cards issued for one year.
Health and Insurance
Every foreigner staying in the Polish territory is obliged to hold a valid insurance covering costs of
medical care in Poland. Students from the EU member states are advised to be insured in their home
countries and bring a European Health Insurance Card. Non-EU students are advised to obtain health
insurance in their own countries before arriving in Poland. It is also possible to purchase a Polish
public health insurance. Detailed information can be found at: www.bosz.uj.edu.pl

Other Useful Information
City Transport
Despite containing some 750,000 inhabitants, Krakow is a very compact city. Most of the University
buildings are located in the city centre (apart from the so-called ”new campus”, located in the southwest area of Krakow). How regularly you will need to use public transport will depend on where
you are living and the location of your classes and other university facilities. The service provider of
public transport in Krakow is the Metropolitan Communication Company (MPK). Students holding
valid Polish student ID cards are entitled to a 50% discount. Other forms of transportation are also
available, such as taxis and city bicycles.
Food and Drink
You will definitely not starve in Krakow, with the abundant number of grocery stores and fresh
outdoor markets. As far as eating out is concerned, possibilities are extremely wide, starting with the
canteens available at the dormitories offering very affordable meals, to fast food, budget-friendly and
cosy sidewalk cafes, up to more exclusive restaurants offering international cuisine. The entire city is
adorned with bars, pubs and clubs making pub crawls and night life very convenient and eventful.

“Every single day I spend in Krakow leaves a tattoo in my mind. Each tattoo tells a
different story about diverse cultural immersions, challenging yet rewarding studies
and work, everlasting friendship and romantic adventures. I will cherish these
tattoos as long as I live. After almost two years of studying at JU, I believe I will go
back home a different person”

Sport and Leisure Activities
The University offers the option for degree programme students to join the Jagiellonian University
Sports teams, such as: volleyball, basketball, football, etc. Exchange Students who wish to be part
of sporting activities, have the option of joining ESN Sports teams, and partake in the numerous
tournaments held as well as many organised trips (kayaking, climbing, skiing, etc.)
Ice skaters will probably take pleasure in the small ice rink that usually opens in the Błonia in winter
time. There is also a larger, indoor skating arena beside Hala Targowa, which is open for ice-skating
fun throughout the winter season. Skiing and other winter activities are popular and easily accessible
sports in Poland. With its location in close proximity of the mountains, Krakow is only a short bus ride
away from skiing or snowboarding adventures.
Krakow also has a wide range of private sport facilities which offer classes in aerobics, yoga, tai-chi,
dance, weights, etc.
