Spring 2015
Purrfect Pals Sanctuary Tour:
Kathy’s Room
Kathy’s Room is one of several sanctuary
rooms at our Arlington facility. It is also
the bedroom of our founder, Kathy
Centala! Yep, it’s actually her bedroom
and she has the tremendous honor of
sharing it with several special cats.
FREE Cat Spay and Neuter Clinic!
Did you know that Purrfect Pals offers FREE
spay and neuter surgeries for cats and kittens
every week in our Arlington shelter’s clinic?
Donations are encouraged if you are able,
but not required. To schedule your kitty’s appointment, please call us at 360-652-9611 or
email us at [email protected].
Cats who live in her room typically need
additional love and care. They might
be wonderful cats that don’t do well in
a kennel, cats in need of hospice care
or semi-feral cats who need constant
exposure to people to come out of their
shells.

of these kitties have more colorful
personalities than others but all have
special needs, either emotional or
physical.
Tessa Ann’s former owner left her in a
carrier in the parking lot of a local pet
store with a note saying they could no
longer care for her. She was terrified
when she arrived at Purrfect Pals and
hid behind the toilet in Kathy’s Room for
months. Slowly, with the help of another
cat named Porter, she became confident
enough to leave the bathroom. Now
nine years old, Tessa Ann is the queen

for her weight loss.
ear Tabby,
Our vet recently told us our cat Moxie is
overweight and needs to go on a diet. We
were free-feeding her with dry food we just
left out all the time, but are now supposed
to feed her a fixed amount of wet food twice
a day instead. Problem is, she is making us
crazy! She begs for food all the time and
meows constantly when it’s meal-time – even
waking us up in the morning on weekends
when we’re trying to sleep in, forcing one of
us to get up and go feed her. How can we
make this transition easier on us all?
Moxie’s Mom
Dear Mom,
Oof, been there, done that. My humans put
me on a diet a few years ago after I had packed
on a few extra ounces and, boy, did that ever
stink. They started out doing what it sounds
like you’re doing, though: lots of change,
really fast. That’s torture for us kitties. We
like routines, in fact, we rely on them, and
when you suddenly shake those loose, we get
really stressed out and unhappy.
What you’re describing here is a lot of change
all at once, too: it’s not just how Moxie is
being fed (free-feeding vs. fixed meal times)
but also what. That’s way too much for a
kitty to take on all at once; no wonder her
little furry head is spinning!
Let’s slow this train down, is what I’m
thinking. Instead of making both switches
at the same time, do one first and then the
other. Start by getting her used to eating her
dry food twice a day instead of all day long.
To figure out how much she normally eats,
put 1 cup of dry food in her bowl at the start
of a day, wait 24 hours, then measure what’s
left in the bowl. Subtract that from 1 cup, and
now you know about how much Moxie eats
each day. Split that in half and start giving
half to her in the morning and half in the
evening.
Once she’s had a week or two to adjust to that
change, then start introducing the new wet
food. Put some of that out next to her dry
kibble at each meal, and gradually (over a
few days to a week), start shifting the balance
of each, with more and more wet and less and
less dry, until only wet remains. Give her the
amount of wet food your vet recommended
In the meantime, step up your play with
Moxie! Play can not only help with the
weight loss, but it can also help with some
of the anxiety and stress from all the other
changes. A good pattern to get into with
any cat is play-eat-sleep. Before each meal,
spend 10-15 minutes playing with your cat,
then feed them. After that, most kitties will
take a bath and a nap. This helps mimic our
natural hunting instincts – hunt the prey,
eat the prey, digest the prey – and makes us
overall happier and healthier.
As for waking you up in the morning, here’s
the mistake you’re making: you’re rewarding
her for it by getting up to feed her! Boy, are
you humans easy! All it takes to get you
to do our bidding is about 10 minutes of
pushing your buttons! So toughen up! If
she’s coming into your room to rouse you,
shut the bedroom door before you turn in. If
she howls at the door, ignore it! It might take
a couple of weeks for her to get the picture
– that you aren’t her minions after all – but
then she’ll figure out pestering you isn’t
worth the effort and go find something more
entertaining to do.
Next, try to make that dinner meal as close
to your bedtime as possible, or hold a small
portion of it back and give that as a snack
before you hit the hay. Then do that play-eatsleep trick. The “play” part will help with the
“sleep” part, and the “eat” part will keep her
sated longer through the night. Eventually,
Moxie will sleep more while you are, and
not be as hungry first thing in the morning.
Doesn’t that sound good?
While Moxie is on a diet, consider taking
her into the vet for regular weigh-ins (unless
car rides are too stressful for her). Many vets
will let you come in for weight checks for
free. Keeping an eye on her weight loss will
help you gauge whether you need to step up
your efforts or tone them down.
Good luck, Moxie Family! Getting us indoor
kitties to lose weight can be tough, but it’s
doable with patience and times. Go slow and
play hard!

Imagine the Pawsibilities!
Introducing our Capital Campaign and Shelter Expansion Project
Purrfect Pals was founded in 1988 by
cat lover Kathy Centala, who took a
look around her community and saw
far too many unwanted cats and kittens
whose only option was over-crowded
shelters with high euthanasia rates. Kathy
wondered what could be done to improve
their odds, and quickly determined the
only solution was to take away the option
of euthanasia completely.
Kathy had never run a shelter before, and
the only thing she had less of than money
was fundraising experience. Determined
to open the Puget Sound region’s first nokill cat shelter, however, she managed to
scrape together the down payment for a
modest house on five acres in Arlington,
Washington in 1993.
Room by room, the original house was
renovated over the years, along with
its two unattached garages, to create
Purrfect Pals’ existing shelter, veterinary
clinic, and sanctuaries.
Purrfect Pals is a resourceful organization
and, over the past 25+ years, we have
saved thousands of lives with our current
facility. However, we need more space to
make our vision, a community in which
every cat is wanted, a reality. Originally a
house built in 1976, our main building is
now outdated and the property needs to
be updated.
We believe it is time for our Purrfect Pals
to dream big and expand our shelter with
Patty’s House, a brand new two-story,
4000 sq ft building. This expansion of
our facility will allow us to increase our
capacity, improve services and provide
even better care for the cats in our
community and their families.
Our plan also includes improvements
to our existing buildings and property
in order to bring them up to code.
Renovations include the installation of
a commercial fire alarm system, water
and septic system upgrades and safety
improvements.
Adding this much-needed new building
(and later repurposing some existing
rooms) will provide us with enough space
for at least 100 more cats at a time. More
importantly, it will increase our ability to
take in cats from multiple sources and
keep them healthy!
Renovations to our existing buildings and
property improvements are expected to
be completed in the Spring. We hope to
break ground on Phase Two, construction
of Patty’s House, in late 2015. The total
expected cost of this two-phase project is
$1,100,000.
Thanks to generous lead gifts from donors
Bruce and Jeannie Nordstrom, the Estate
of Patricia Schultz, the Nysether Family
Foundation and the Petco Foundation,
our capital campaign has already raised
over $625,000 - more than 50% of our
goal - as of April 1st.
A recently installed sign marks the future location of Patty’s House, a two-story, 4000 sq ft
building, which we hope to begin constructing on our Arlington property in late 2015.
Purrfect Pals is excited to announce the
launch of the public phase of our capital
campaign. We are now asking you to join
these foundations and individuals so
we can make Patty’s House a reality and
reach our ultimate goal of ending cat
homelessness in the Puget Sound region!

More space at our Arlington facility will allow Purrfect Pals to:
•
House up to 100 more cats in our shelter at a time and increase
adoptions significantly.
•
Create a better balance between special kitties who need medical
care and easily adoptable cats.
•
House cats and kittens from multiple sources (Everett Animal Shelter,
Tacoma Humane Society, Olympic Peninsula Humane Society,
public intakes, etc.) separately to reduce cross-contamination.
•
Isolate sick cats from healthy cats more effectively.
•
Provide alternative housing for cats who do not like other cats.
Currently our only options are to keep them in a cage or loose with
other cats.
•
Provide an onsite X-Ray machine, improving our quality of veterinary
care.
•
Increase the number of cats we can accept from the public or
shelters on short notice.
•
House fewer cats in each room when necessary to prevent the
spread of illness and decrease stress.
•
Provide privacy, dignity and comfort for clients who are coming to
us for help.
•
Increase the size of our pet food bank.
•
Provide additional office space for our shelter staff, volunteers and
foster parents.
•
Increase our storage space for cat food and supplies.
•
Meet county code requirements.
Architectural plans for our new two-story building.
Help Make our Dream a Reality!
By making a donation to our campaign for a new building, you
have an opportunity to contribute to the care and well-being of
Puget Sound cats and kittens for many years to come. Throughout
the new building, we are offering numerous areas that can
be sponsored. Commemorative naming opportunities are a
wonderful way to honor a special cat or cat lover.

Our shelter expansion will allow us to help more
cats like Sultan, a sweet and friendly nine-year-old
cat with Hyperthyroidism. Sultan would have been
euthanized in a local public shelter if Purrfect Pals
hadn’t been able to rescue him recently.
If you would like to speak to someone directly about our shelter
expansion plans and how you can help make them a reality, please

The Average Joe Cat Show!
Join us on May 9th in Shoreline to celebrate cats and the people who love them!
The Average Joe Cat Show, a fundraiser
for Purrfect Pals, isn’t a stuffy competition
limited to traditional show cats. We don’t
discriminate against cats who happen to
be purebred, but you won’t find any “Best
in Breed” awards at this event. For eleven
years now, we have gathered every spring
to celebrate cats and their quirks. What
you will find at the Average Joe Cat Show
is a gymnasium filled with cute housecats,
some begrudgingly dressed in costumes
for the occasion. They will be competing
for titles such as Most Impressive Ear
Hair, Loudest Purr, Biggest Feet and Most
Obnoxious Cat. And, since every cat is a
winner in our (and their) minds, every
contestant who doesn’t win first place will
take home a red second prize ribbon.
a cat and kitten adoption event, tons of
vendor booths selected with cat lovers in
mind, professional cat behavior experts
offering up free advice, a kids’ craft table,

too!), ice cream and more! If the ribbon
your cat will win in the photo contest
doesn’t impress him, surely the catnip
toys, cat beds and other goodies you can
bring home from our vendor fair will.
If your cat isn’t much of a social butterfly
and would prefer to enjoy the festivities
from home, there are still plenty of ways
for you to participate in the Average Joe
Cat Show. This fun, family-friendly event
also features a cat photography show,
We invited our animal rescue friends
to share in the fun again this year! In
addition to Purrfect Pals, the show will
feature several non-profit organizations
including Everett Animal Shelter, PAWS,
The NOAH Center, Seattle Animal Shelter,
Seattle Area Feline Rescue, the
Feral Cat Spay & Neuter Project,
Pasado’s Safe Haven, Genevieve
G. Animal Advocacy, Feral Care,
Snow Leopard Trust, the Paw

Several of these groups will be
bringing adoptable cats and
kittens and all of them will have
staff and volunteers on hand to
talk about volunteering, fostering
and other opportunites for you
to lend a helping paw to Puget
Sound animals in need.

Moosa is doing well. She doesn’t really care to leave
the guest room and would prefer the other cats
stay out. Spider, the 10 year old, is trying to get her
to be his friend, which is really nice because he’s a
difficult cat. That he is being nice to her so soon is
terrific. She’s not so sure about him yet. Popeye,
-Mike and Jennifer Cross the 13 year old, hates all cats including Spider, so
there’s not much hope there. Moosa adores my
husband and practically trips over herself when
she hears him coming. At night, when she thinks
I should be paying attention to her instead of
sleeping, she sticks out her front paw and taps me
on the lips. I wake up and she’s sitting there staring
at me. *taptaptap* She’s a sweet girl and I think
she will fit in just fine.
Smokey Persian Face now known as Emmett is
settling in beautifully. He is fantastic with my son
and follows him around like a little shadow and
passed his vet visit with flying colors! He is getting
into trouble, eating like a pig and sleeping on my
head at night. We are so delighted!

Lucy’s elderly owner had died. Lucy is delightful
and sweet. She has even become accustomed to
visitors! Our grown son is so taken with Lucy that
if anything happens to grandma there may be a
custody battle! Fortunately, we all live within just
Moose
a few miles of each other so Lucy has gotten to
know the entire family. Thanks for saving Lucy for
us. She is much loved again.

Our beloved Maximus, who we adopted three
years ago, has brought so much joy to our lives!
He is the sweetest and most loving cat we have

with our 2 year old Siamese, Cooper. Cooper and
Niko play for hours and hours, chasing each other
from one end of the house to the other, wrestling
and playing with their toys. Cooper has not had
a playmate before (our other cats won’t play the
way Cooper wants to play, which is rough) and it
warms our hearts that he now has a buddy to play
with. Niko also doesn’t mind our crazy Australian
Shepherds. Niko is a super sweet, loving, happy,
purring machine that is a perfect match for
our house. We are happy we took a chance
and adopted him. He has exceeded all of our
expectations!! He will be taken care of and spoiled
for the rest of his life! Thank you Purrfect Pals!

Cricket (now Kriket) is doing great. She likes to sing
songs and wrestle with Koza. She has tolerated a
bath and trim and is an aggressive snuggler when
we are trying to sleep. :)

Ella has made a complete recovery from her
kidney infection. She gets fluids three times a
week and has tons of energy! She continues to be
the most wonderful companion.

We adopted Mr. Sunshine (now known as Mr.
Niko, or just Niko) on Jan. 27, 2015 at Purrfect
Pals, Arlington. He has amazed us in more ways
than one. He gets along with all our other cats,
but in particular he gets along amazingly well
