An Improbable Inspiring Musical
For Young Voices

All young magic reindeer need a
good, well-rounded education.
Fortunately, they are able to get one
from the School of Reindeer at
(where else?) the North Pole. They
can study all of the important
subjects like math, science, reading,
music, and so on. But they also have
to have specialized training in
necessary skills like leaping, reindeer
games, and of course, flying.
Now you would think that
flying comes easily to these
youngsters, and the truth is, all
magic reindeer do have the ability
to fly. However, it doesn’t just
happen. It has to be learned, or at
the very least, chosen, as the
young reindeer in our story discover
for themselves.
Frustrated by their inability to
simply take off, they wonder why
they can’t just get up and go. As the tale unfolds, it is revealed that it is the kindness in a
reindeer’s heart that renders flight possible. An inspiring message for us all, to be sure.
Approximately 20 minutes long, the musical includes five songs and a lighthearted
script with short, easy-to-learn lines for your students.
As with all of our revues and musicals, there is a thoughtfully designed Teacher’s
Guide, with lots of suggestions for making a great performance. Also included are
reproducible Singer’s Parts, lyric sheets, posters, and program covers.

Throughout the years, MUSIC K-8 has
been the source of many wonderful songs
and arrangements to help you with your
winter and Christmas programming. We
are pleased to bring you this collection of
eight of our favorites to add sparkle and
fun to your programs. Capture the spirit
of the season, as well as the attention of
your students and audiences alike, with
these eight glorious songs. It includes:
• Christmas Jubilation - Energize
your kids and audience with this “clap
your hands, dance in the aisle” gospel
style Christmas tune. The melody is in an
easy range and it is unison. It works for
older age groups, but younger ones can
handle it quite nicely, and we give you an
option of featuring up to three soloists.
• Here We Come A-Caroling - This
spirited Celtic arrangement transitions
between 6/8 time and cut-time, the
former having a rollicking feel, the latter
a more driving feel. We used lots of
drums, and a combination of penny whistle and fiddle. We kept the adaptation secular so that
more schools can use it, but you can use the more traditional lyrics if you prefer.
• Glo-glo-glorious! - Here’s a happy, swingin’, lively partner song. It’s very jazzy, but all those
shimmering touches of strings give it a little bit of a Broadway feel. It’s a natural for movement
and a choreography video is available. Certain to be a showstopper!
• Santa’s Getting Fit For Christmas - This lighthearted two-beat, Broadway-style
presentation encourages a healthy lifestyle for Santa, and for us! Full rhythm, percussion, strings,
woodwinds, and brass provide an energetic undercurrent to this peppy 2-part (optional) vocal
arrangement. And a helpful choreography video is available.
• Candy Cane Lane - This 3-part song is a combination of good old-fashioned R&B and
contemporary hip hop elements. It’s our tongue-in-cheek musical tribute to that section of
Everytown, USA that is compelled to bedeck itself (in the extreme!) every holiday season. This
is a great one to use with your older singers. It’s just plain fun to sing!
• Christmas Tree, What Will You Be... - A light, happy tune that’s unison and easy to
learn, this song pays homage to the wonder and mystery of what this year’s Christmas tree will
look like. The lyrics ponder all of the different possibilities. The recorded accompaniment is very
upbeat. Let your kids move freely when they sing this bouncy tune and just have fun!
• Like Diamonds In The Night - This happy pop song is a tribute to that feeling we get as
we see the decorations, embellishments, and displays filled with light at that special time of year.
From the bouncing anticipation in the strings at the beginning, it slowly builds to a passionate,
full envelope of sound surrounding us much like the sparkling lights all around. We’ve kept the
song relatively simple so that you can use it with varying grade levels.
• Have A Happy, Happy Holiday - This upbeat, pop-style tune makes a great concert
closer, and it’s universal enough that you could use it for a Christmas concert, winter concert,
or any type of seasonal program. Set to a retro rock ’n’ roll beat, this infectious song lends
itself readily to movement, if you’re inclined to add some.

Celebrate the customs and traditions of Hanukkah!
HANUKKAH SONGS
FOR YOUNG VOICES

Since the beginning, we have included
songs from a variety of holiday traditions.
This collection of Hanukkah songs has
lots of options for teaching and
programming, including rounds, the topic
of major and minor keys, and the
incorporation of simple instruments.
You’ll find lots of variety in these songs
and your students will enjoy learning
about the traditions, games, and history
behind this old celebration.
From the pages of MUSIC K-8
magazine, this collection includes:
• Hanukkah O Hanukkah - This
festive song is adapted from the old
Yiddish folk song “Y’mey Hanukkah.” Our
setting has mixed a little folk style and a
little klezmer at a moderate tempo.
• Shalom Chaverim - A beautiful,
traditional Hebrew folk song, the
translation of the Hebrew text is basically:
“Goodbye and be safe my friends. Until
we meet again, have peace.” Our
arrangement is easy to sing and presents
the Hebrew lyrics followed by a repeat in the English translation. Then, it repeats the English
lyrics, but is sung as a 2-part round. A pronunciation guide is also included.
• My Little Dreidl - This simple song is a round that any of your students can learn quickly
and easily, though you may wish to use it with your younger ones. The light arrangement includes
guitars, mandolin, bass, piano, bells, and antique cymbals.
• Shalom - While “shalom” is recognized as a traditional Jewish greeting or farewell, it is a
Hebrew word which literally means “peace.” This partner song is appropriate for any peaceful,
seasonal celebration. There are two independent melodies sung separately at first, then together.
• Hanukkah Festival - This song is in a traditional major key and celebrates Hanukkah in a
very upbeat, rollicking 3/4 feel. While it is written as a round, you can sing it unison, or even
turn it into a 3-part round.
• Happy Hanukkah! - For something lighter, happy, and in a major key, here’s a very simple
song that most students should be able to sing, even your youngest. It’s unison, repetitious, and
short, so it won’t take long to learn. The bouncy and whimsical feel of the recorded
accompaniment is a charming mixture of clarinets, muted brass, acoustic guitars, and chimes.
• I Have A Little Dreidel - One of the best known Hanukkah tunes, this lively little song is
over 100 years old. We present five verses, a combination of traditional verses and some of our
own creation, including one that can be played on kazoos. There is also a Boomwhacker® part.
• It’s Hanukkah - This is a simple, singable tune for the celebration of Hanukkah. While the
song is a natural for a holiday concert, you can also use it for a lesson on the difference between
major and minor keys, since the song uses both.
• A Song For Hanukkah - Using a more pensive and haunting, but beautiful accompaniment,
this song features piano, bass, strings, and a lovely cello solo. The lyrics refer to many Hanukkah
traditions and customs, but they also speak of dedication, prayer, honor, and hope.
• Light The Candles All Around The World - Bonus Song available in downloadable format One thing many celebrations have in common is the use of candles. This song starts out very
gently, with wistful melodies and progressions, and it slowly builds.

In A High Quality Octavo Format
We often get requests to have some of our tunes released as octavos because many teachers
prefer to use them with their choirs. While many of our tunes are available as Singles
Reproducible Kits, octavos save you the time spent copying and binding, and they are in the
octavo size used for most choral music. As you would expect from any Plank Road Publishing
product, there are fully orchestrated Performance/Accompaniment recordings for every song.
O Come, O Come Emmanuel

Dating back over 1,000 years, the haunting, modal melody of
“O Come, O Come Emmanuel” is based on one of the earliest
forms of sacred music known – the chant or plainsong.
The glory and mystery of this beautiful tune are captured in
this very special 2-part arrangement by Teresa Jennings. This
piece is ideal for a young choir, but it also lets large, more
experienced choirs sound amazing. The several provided tracks
include full and accompaniment versions of the piece. There are
also special rehearsal tracks that isolate the two parts.

Once In Royal David’s City

This beautiful Christmas carol started out as a poem by Cecil
Frances Alexander in 1848. A year later, the English organist Henry
John Gauntlett discovered the poem and set it to music. It has been
a favorite of many ever since. This new arrangement is a beautiful
and lyrical treatment of this old classic hymn. It works great as a 3-part
mixed setting, with the third part working well for changed or changing
boys’ voices, or for girls with a nice lower range. While the setting
works well with just piano, the recorded tracks feature a lush
orchestration that provides a perfect accompaniment.

Everybody’s favorite rockin’ elf is back!
ELFIS AND THE
FROZEN PRINCESS
A Musical Fantasy For Young Voices

Yes, Elfis is back in a wonderful new
musical that is destined to be a favorite of
your singers and audiences alike.
Everyone in the village of Icebergia is
shivering with excitement when they
hear that the Arctic-renowned band
“Elfis and The Sleigh Riders” is coming
to perform at the Snowflake Festival!
The King and Queen have invited
everyone in the entire Kingdom of
Frozonia to attend, including all the
princesses who live in the land. All
except one – The Abominable Snow
Princess. An oversight or a deliberate act
of omission? No matter to her. An affront
is an affront. After crashing the Festival,
the Abominable Snow Princess takes her
revenge by casting a freezing spell on
Snowella, the daughter of the King and
Queen. Snowella is unable to move!
Despite the usual efforts to break a spell,
nothing seems to work. Until, that is,
Elfis steps forward. A gentle song sung
tenderly to a scorned princess is the only
way to thaw a frozen heart. And then it turns out the omission was a big mistake anyway, so
there are plenty of messages to reinforce here: kindness, forgiveness, acceptance, peace, and of
course, letting it go.
While the wintry setting and characters (including elves) makes for a good holiday
performance, it does not mention any holiday in particular. So you could really use it in any
season. There are a number of speaking and non-speaking parts aside from the main characters
– princesses, princes, reindeer, snowmen, townsfolk, miscellaneous creatures and characters –
which can be adapted freely to increase or decrease the size of your cast.
Approximately 20 minutes long, the musical includes five songs and a lighthearted script
with short, easy-to-learn lines for your characters.
As with all of our revues and musicals, there is a thoughtfully designed Teacher’s Guide,
with lots of suggestions for making a great performance. Also included are reproducible
Singer’s Parts, lyric sheets, posters, and program covers.

THE HOLLY JOLLY PIRATES
OF PIÑATAVILLE
Teresa Jennings has teamed with renowned humorist and
writer Karl Hitzemann to produce this exciting holiday
musical! This delightful tale is especially written for K-4
students and as with virtually all of Teresa and Karl’s K-4
musicals, it is secular in nature, and comes with a memorable
lesson to be learned.
Long ago, in days of yore, everything is sweet in the
little town of Piñataville where making piñatas is a happy
way of life. That is, until one night when a mischievous
band of pirates sneaks into town and plunders the piñatas.
When the townspeople discover the crime, they are
horrified! Who could have done such a thing? They set out
to discover the identity of the culprits by setting a trap,
using the few piñatas they have left as bait. Only instead of
filling them with treats, this time they use hot peppers!
When the thieves do indeed return to the scene of the
crime, they are most unpleasantly surprised when the “candy” they bite into turns out to be
hot, hot, hot! Rendered temporarily helpless, they are easily captured by the people of
Piñataville who quickly and compassionately give them cool water to drink. The penitent
pirates admit their extreme fondness for sweets and apologize for their actions. The
townspeople decide to let it go if the pirates agree to help them make more piñatas for the
upcoming holidays. The pirates are delighted to help, not only paying their debt to society, but
making new friends as well. Everything is sweet in Piñataville once again!

Progressive, Fun-To-Play Warm-Ups
For Young Players
Many, many teachers have told us how
much they’ve used these well thought-out sets of
warm-ups, originally found in issues of RECORDER
CLASSROOM magazine. Artie tells us that in every
classroom recorder lesson, as well as each ensemble
recorder segment, she always starts with an echo-style
warm-up sequence. They keep the students’ ears working
and their fingers moving, starting with easy sequences
and gradually building in complexity.
These nine separate warm-up sequences, in two sets,
are much like they were in the two issues they came from.
The first six warm-ups, “Excellent Ears,” are easier and
moderately short. These six echoes are based on the notes
B, A, G, BA, AG, and BAG. The last three warm-ups,
“Easy Echoes,” are longer, and spiral progressively. They
feature the notes, respectively, BAG, BAGC'D', and low D low EBAG. Since these sets are more
complex, three recordings are provided for each, at 84 bpm, 92 bpm, and 100 bpm.There are a
variety of lesson plan strategies for you to consider, depending on your students’ experience and
abilities. The notation for each Warm-Up Sequence can be: Displayed via a computer/ projector;
Made into a poster for display; Copied onto an overhead transparency; Or simply played or spoken
