Hi Everyone! Happy New Year! I can’t believe
it’s 2014. Remember in 1999 when we were worried
about Y2K? It seems almost silly now. I always like a
new month, but I love a new year!
I’m sure you’ve learned to expect the unexpected.
We go through so many life changing experiences. One
thing I know for sure - there is always a lesson to be
learned, whether the experience is positive or negative.
Many of you know that I injured my knee. This
was certainly unexpected and painful! It will take quite
a while to mend. But I ask myself, what is the lesson in
all this? What does God want me to learn about myself
in the midst of this? Well I have definitely slowed down,
simplified, and spent much more time at home. I think
this is a good thing. I read and rest more. I pray more.
I spend more time with my family. I know that all things
work together for good for those who love the Lord!
As I sit at my desk typing this, I look up at the
scenic posters in the fitness center and read the words.
Discover, Achieve, Search, Explore, Enjoy, Excel, Renew,
Reflect…………………………..Wow. We never stop
doing these things no matter our age. Each day brings
the unexpected. What is God wanting you to focus
on? What is the lesson involved in the experience? My
wish for you is much happiness, but we also go through
unhappy times or a time of transition.
Thank goodness for Montereau and the beauty,
comfort and safety it brings. We are introducing some
new classes in 2014! We will be doing an Eat Better,
Move More 2 class! This is a 6 week nutrition and
exercise class to get your new year started out right.
Also be on the lookout for a new Balance class starting
in February. Stay warm, my friends, and thank you for
all your prayers!

January is Glaucoma
Awareness Month
Glaucoma is called the “sneak thief of sight” because it
can have no symptoms or warning signs. It is the
leading cause of blindness in the world, and there is no
cure. So what can you do?
Know the Risk Factors: Everyone is at risk for
glaucoma, but the risk is higher for some. People over
60 are six times more likely to have glaucoma. Other
risk factors include family members with glaucoma,
hypertension, diabetes and severe nearsightedness.
People who have had a traumatic eye injury are also at a
higher risk even years after the injury.
Get Eye Exams: Since glaucoma has no cure, it is
important to catch it early. That’s why its important to
get regular eye exams. Adults over 65 should get their
eyes checked every 6 months to a year.
Take Care or Your Eyes: The best way to prevent
glaucoma is to take good care of your eyes. Always wear
protective goggles when playing sports or doing any
activities that could lead to eye injury. If you have
hypertension or diabetes, make sure to follow your
doctors orders and take your prescribed medications to
keep your condition in control and lower your risk for
glaucoma.
