The entertainment kept coming from different parts of this side of Melbourne, easing everyone’s anguish from the freakish weekend weather. Such is the warmth of the recently concluded Philippine Festival of Music Arts and Culture that Ed Guevarra, the event’s organiser, considers it a success. The two-day event was held at the grounds of Polish Syrena Community Centre in Rowville, Victoria from 28 February to 1 March. Ed estimates the number of people to have reached more than 2,000. And these are not only FilAustralians. Guests of various ethnicity also came to witness first-hand how the Filipino community celebrates their culture and heritage. This year, a phenomenal number of guests, totalling 250, were involved in the fundraising charity. Bollywood III raised $2,400, which will be donated to the Lost Dog Home and Paws Shelter in Manila, Philippines. ALRM pays for adoption fees and raises money to grant those in need of companionship. Kate Holter, a representative from the Lost Dog Home in North Melbourne, made an appearance as she shared the same vision with ALRM. She believes that dogs should be treated fairly and should be in a kind, lov- ing home. ALRM’s founder, Jessica Peritos, was motivated by the loss of a furry loved one. Alongside this, during an emotional journey in the Philippines, she found her passion as she saw all the neglected animals on the streets and people who walked by, unblinking and doing nothing to help them. Through their previous Bollywood events, they have successfully achieved this aim and now, a good number of animals are happy, loved and well cared for. This year, with the money raised, $1,300 will go towards the Lost Dog Home, to assist with adoptions and $1,000 to the Paws Shelter in Manila. Every year, for this month of the year, we celebrate not only women who have made major contributions or who are multi-awarded in the different fields of endeavour, but also the women in our lives—our mums, daughters, sisters, grandmothers, girl friends, female friends, nannies, teachers, among others. The role of women has changed dramatically over the decades that women also took on jobs usually assigned to men. Women have taken seats in government and have headed and managed large companies. While they have taken on these big responsibilities and conquered worlds, women have not been afraid to show their vulnerable sides. You can run to them for comfort, for healing, for care. They can touch you to show their affection, cry or even bawl in public and be emotional with nary an apology. A recent meme circulating in social media seem to aptly display expectations of women, “Look like a girl, act like a lady, think like a man and work like a horse.” However, women do not always have it rosy. As a matter of fact, women have been subjects of violence. In a report by UN Women, data showed that as at 2013, 35 percent of women worldwide have experienced physical and/or sexual abuse from intimate partner violence or non-partner sexual violence. In 2012, of all women killed, almost half have been killed by their partners or family members. Worldwide, more than 700 million women alive today were married as children (below 18 years of age). More than one in three—or some 250 million—were married before 15. Moreover, women and girls represent 55 per cent of the estimated 20.9 million victims of forced http://violencetowardswomen.weebly.com/violence-against-women.html labour worldwide, and 98 per cent of the estimated 4.5 million forced into sexual exploitation. See more of the report on http:// www.unwomen.org/en/what-we-do/endingviolence-against-women/facts-and-figures In 2008, the United Nations Secretary General launched the “Say No, Unite Against Violence Against Women” Campaign to call on governments, civil society, women’s organisations, the youth and other sectors to address this issue. Last year, on 25 November 2014, the UN also commemorated the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women. This came with a campaign by the UN Secretary General called He for She, which The Philippine Times 23 Rendell Place Hampton Park 3976, VIC Australia Print Post Approved PP332726/0009 publisher and EDITOR-IN-CHIEF Alice Nicolas [email protected] MANAGING EDITOR Reby Gaw SPECIAL SUPPLEMENT EDITOR Kristhine Gestano LITERARY EDITOR Asther Bascuña-Creo CONTRIBUTORS Raine Cabral, Felix Carao, Mila Cichello, Ellen Desear Espiritu, Fe Gillies, Raul Hernandez, Estelle McNally, Joel Magpayo, Lita Mahle, Dina Mananquil-Delfino, Darwin Manubag, Ryan Perdio, Earvin Cabalquinto, Benjie De Ubago, Norminda Villanueva, Fr. On 19th March, the Philippine Embassy’s ePassport biometrics mobile service and oath-taking for dual citizens arrives in Melbourne and pre-registrations must be submitted to the Philippine Embassy by 6 March. This is a great opportunity to reacquire your Filipino citizenship. The legislation that pertains to Dual Citizenship is the Republic Act No. 9225, or the Citizenship Retention and Reacquisition Act (2003). Under this Law: • A natural-born Filipino who lost their Filipino citizenship through naturalisation in Australia may re-acquire Filipino citizenship by taking the Philippine Oath of Allegiance before a duly-authorised Philippine official. • The Philippine Oath of Allegiance does not require the renunciation of citizenship in any other country. stop violence against women. Issued in public interest by Indian Urban Scenario • Filipinos who re-acquire Filipino citizenship may once again enjoy full civil, economic and political rights enjoyed by all Filipino citizens. These rights include the following: The right to own real property in the Philippines The Philippine Constitution prohibits foreigners from owning real property in the Philippines. There are some privileges granted to former Filipinos as far as property ownership is concerned, but these privileges are limited and far more restricted than the rights that current Filipino citizens enjoy. The right to engage in business or commerce as a Filipino The retail business and almost all professions that require welfare through education, poverty alleviation programs and protecting their rights. At the level of our own homes, we should teach our children to respect women and acknowledge their capabilities and contributions. That women are not punching boards, their outlet for anger and frustration or their means to show their masculinity. That women are, in fact, the men’s partner in promoting prosperity, equality, development and everything good in the world. That women should be honoured and treated as a counterpart. This can only be true if we teach and uphold that men and women are created equal. Let’s help in curbing violence directed at women. a license to practice (doctor, nurse, lawyer, and the like) are reserved for Filipino citizens. Many former Filipinos who want to retire in the Philippines envision themselves as having a small business, or a small office, to keep a means of being busy in retirement, not to mention the additional income that comes with it. The right to practice one’s profession in accordance with law By simply applying with the proper Philippine authority (Professional Regulations Commission and other accrediting bodies) for a license or permit to engage in such practice, a dual citizen can practice one’s profession in the Philippines. A business or profession is a means of maintaining one’s social status and keeping in touch with one’s community. The right to a Philippine passport A dual citizen travelling to the Philippines can use both their Philippine Passport and their Australian passport. Upon entering the Philippines, the traveller shows their Australian passport for all documentation and they also show their Philippine passport, so that they can be treated as a Filipino. This means minimal restrictions on how long they can stay in the Philippines, with no restrictions on employment or education. The right to vote in Philippine elections The Philippine Constitution guarantees the right to vote to all Filipino citizens and provides a system for absentee voting by qualified Filipinos abroad. Some reasons why Overseas Filipinos should exercise the right to vote in Philippine elections include the following: 1. Filipinos have to possess a minimum of skill, literacy and education in order to obtain jobs abroad. 2. Overseas Filipinos are relatively financially well-off. Jobs overseas mean good salaries, and in developed countries such as Australia, even a minimum legal wage converts to a substantial amount back home. 3. As provider of these funds, Overseas Filipinos strongly influence decision-making back home, and the active participation of Overseas Filipinos in the political process would definitely be reflected in the decisions made by the recipients of remittances. Do I have to pay taxes to the Philippine Government? There are those who, while they recognise the huge benefits of dual citizenship, are hesitant to reacquire their Filipino citizenship because they think that Continued on page 13 5 MARCH 2015 the philippine times www.philtimes.com.au Build a custom designed home to suit your lifestyle and budget. But this special Valentine cruise was more magical as it gathered together 280 guests to witness the birthday celebration of ten guests and the formal launching of a new band called Muszic and Friendz. Lalaine Diez of Diez Sounds and Motion said there is now a new trend to have a band for entertainment rather than seeing one DJ the whole night. Hence, her husband, Melvin Diez helped organised Muszic and Friendz as an answer to the demand of their customers to have a live band. Members of Muszic and Friendz are: Melvin Diez, lead guitar/vocal; Willy De Joya, lead vocal/percussion; Lynn Fitton, lead vocal; Alex Suaze, drums; and Ron- ald Flores, base/keyboard. Lalaine said event organisers can now book to have a DJ and a band playing several songs the entire night for their events. The following celebrated their birthdays on the night: Lillian Bermudez, Agnes Fernandez Misolas, Jisela Jan Misolas, Valentina Espanola, Fe Dorosan, Alex Suaze, Ludy Suaze, Brendan Fitton, Sanjay and Vince. They were serenaded by Willy De Joya and Lynn Fitton. It was a simple ‘hi and hello’ but over several weeks, it turned into hours of chatting and countless phone calls. I liked Adam straight away. He was easy to chat to and to spend time with. Plus he was cute and very cheeky. I thought that apart from being great friends, we could also be an item but a mutual friend beat me to the punch. He had asked Adam out before I could work up the courage to do so. Soon, the two were going out and before long, they were calling each other boyfriends. I was disappointed to say the least but as his good friend, I pretended to be happy for him even though deep down, my heart broke just the tini- est bit. One day after a few months, Adam and his boyfriend broke up. I called him to see how he was coping and though I could sense his heartbreak, I didn’t pry. I wanted him to tell me when he was ready to talk but he never did. Soon, things were back to how they used to be, just like how we were before, although this time, things felt slightly different. Adam seemed more eager to meet and chat, more expressive, more attentive. Buoyed by these apparent new changes, I didn’t want to let another opportunity pass and finally asked Adam out one evening. Us standing outside a club, in the middle of the rain. Me, hearing the booming bass from the dance floor; him, looking down at me apologetically. He said no. The sad, regretful expression on his face didn’t make the situation any less awkward nor painful. I said goodbye and walked away. I didn’t speak to Adam for a long time after that fateful night. He tried but I ignored his phone calls and his attempts at online chats. Eventually, he stopped. After many weeks and a completely new wardrobe, I heard from him once again. He wanted to meet up for lunch. We did one Saturday. He looked just as good as I remembered and was possibly even cheekier than before. Our conversation was easy and teasing as if nothing had happened. And soon, midday turned into evening and we found ourselves walking along the misty banks of the city’s picturesque river. He kept nudging me with his shoulders as we walked. He seemed to be extra playful and smiled and winked knowingly. As we started to cross the decked footbridge spanning the river, he continued to shove lightly and I asked him what he was up to. He only looked, grinned and kept walking. I chased after him and when I had caught up, he started again. I dodged, slowed down, sped up and played along. It was like some crazy game of tango and hopscotch. Finally, halfway across, I couldn’t keep it up. I stopped and wasn’t going to budge until Adam had told me what was going on. He wasn’t looking at me directly but I could sense that cheeky grin on his face. “That question you asked that night,” he said, “do you still feel the same way?” “Do I still feel the same way about what?” I wanted to bait him but I was caught out by his question. He too was probably wet and tired but he still had that smile that says ‘we are loved by God, now and forever’. It wasn’t the Mardi Gras I had planned for that weekend. It was far more. What I joined was one big pilgrimage of faithfuls, one big crowd of hopefuls and one celebration of a faith so strong that not even a typhoon could hinder. Archbishop Yllana was born on 6 February 1948 in Naga City, Philippines. On 19 March 1972, he was ordained a Priest for the Archdiocese of Caceres, Philippines. Following his doctorate in civil and canon law, Archbishop Yllana completed post-graduate studies in international diplomacy at the Pontifical Ecclesiastical Academy in Rome. He entered the Diplomatic Service of the Holy See in 1984 and served successively in the Apostolic Nunciatures in Ghana, Sri Lanka, Turkey, Lebanon, Hungary and China. Archbishop Yllana was appointed Apostolic Nuncio to Papua New Guinea and Titular Archbishop of Montecorvino on 13 December 2001. He was ordained a bishop on 6 January 2002. On 5 February 2002, Archbishop Yllana was appointed Apostolic Nuncio to Solomon Islands and later appointed Apostolic Nuncio to Pakistan on 31 March 2006. His appointment as Apostolic Nuncio to the Democratic Republic of Congo took place on 20 November 2010. The 67-year-old Archbishop speaks English, Spanish, Italian and French. President of the Australian Catholic Bishops Conference Archbishop Denis Hart welcomed the appointment of Archbishop Yllana to Australia. “For the bishops, priests, religious and people of our country, I am deeply grateful to Pope Francis for his nomination of Archbishop Adolfo Yllana, as Apostolic Nuncio to Australia, to succeed Archbishop Paul Gallagher. It is an indication of the Holy Father’s love and concern for us all. “Archbishop Yllana brings wide and diverse experience, great faith and priestly gifts. We assure him of a warm and enthusiastic welcome upon his arrival and service here in Australia.” In July 2014, Pope Francis also named Archbishop Bernardito Cleopas Auza, a native of Talibon in Bohol, as the Vatican’s permanent representative to the UN. Auza is the first Filipino to represent the Vatican before the UN. Aside from Yllana and Auza, two other Filipino archbishops represent the Pope as ambassadors. Archbishop Osvaldo Padilla is the Apostolic Nuncio to Korea while his brother, Archbishop Francisco Padilla, is the Nuncio to Tanzania. A Papal Nuncio, officially known as an Apostolic Nuncio, is a permanent diplomatic representative of the Holy See to a state. I opened the windows to let some air in and went to check if the source was from outside. The air was clear and there was no sign of burning in the sky. Everyone in the household started to panic as the smell of smoke was not dissipating. I dialled 000 and asked for the fire department. A few days before, we had a door knocker who advised that the government is keen to replace our old halogen lights as they can cause the insulation to smoulder or ignite. Within five minutes, three fire trucks pulled into our street, with full action with lights, sirens and horns. It was a relief to see them. The officers were gracious – it was better to be safe than sorry. My daughter, when the worry was over, commented how gorgeous the men in uniform were! Only a prayerful discernment pointed to the possibility of a spiritual warfare. That afternoon I was scheduled to attend a life-changing retreat. I observed that whenever I do, strange things occur. Beer bottles were thrown into our yard while facilitating Life in the Spirit seminars in the past. Family emergencies surfaced as huge and critical during other evangelisation events. While a deliverance prayer was being held at home years ago, I got a call from the school that my daughter (in Year 5 at that time) was very upset as she could not find her shoes someone threw them in the field at some distance. After the smoke saga was cleared, as I sat down to reflect on the day’s readings, I wondered what the significance was. What was the Lord‘s message? The first reading for that Sunday Mass was from Deuteronomy (15:18-20) when Moses was reminding the people of what they asked of Yahweh: “Never let me hear the voice of Yahweh my God or see the great fire again”. This was followed by the Gospel reading from Mark 1:21-28, when Jesus commands the evil spirit to be quiet, come out of the boy and the unclean spirit obeying Jesus’ authority. Was this a coincidence? For those who believe that God’s word is alive and powerful, the occurrence that day was to become a testimony. The Lord delivered the strong point that the enemy, the devil will lay traps to distract and inconvenience us from coming closer to God. He hates for the children of God to dwell in praise, worship, repentance, healing and fellowship. The enemy does not mind us to be busy - but when we desire to honour the presence of God by glorifying, honouring and drawing others to Jesus, he gets very upset and will try to block us. But in the same gospel, Jesus delivers the message that He has full authority and can quieten the restless spirit. While waiting for the firemen to come, I prayed in the spirit and blessed the house with holy water, asking for the Lord’s protection. I marvelled at the response of Jesus: “Be quiet! Come out of him!” The agent of restoration is the Holy Spirit. Just as my morning was bothered by the unholy smoke, my day ended with fire from the Holy Spirit as we were led to pray, praise, worship and testify to God’s goodness and faithfulness. The zeal to submit to God and trust in His abiding presence was ignited again. +61 423 658 307 [email protected] 13-A Warman Way, Boulder, WA 6432 +61 8 9022 7268 Adult WS Wed 730PM Sunday 6:30PM ADULT WS: T hursday 8.00 PM E nglish Saturday 9.30 AMEnglish CWS: Saturday 11.00 AM English GIPPSLAND GROUP WORSHIP SERVICE Services every Sunday from 10.00 AM to 12.00 NN. Continued from page 4 they will have to pay taxes to both the Philippine and the Australian governments. The short and complete answer is: No. Dual citizenship has no tax effects in the Philippines. This is because Philippine taxation is based on where income is earned or where property is located, regardless of citizenship. Only incomes derived from the Philippines are subject to taxation by the Philippine government. Thus, a person need not pay income tax to the Philippine government for income earned abroad, whether or not he is a Filipino. We are Filipinos at heart. While it is right that we pay due obedience to the laws of any state which may for a time become our place of residence, we should never lose sight of the allegiance that we owe to our native land, always remembering that nature has implanted in us a sacred and indissoluble attachment to the country of our birth and our upbringing. The goal to find the answer led us to Croatian Catholic Centre in Sunshine West on 6 February. It was a warm Melbourne night so I was half-praying not to be caught in the middle of some moshing frenzy that made rock concerts in the 90s so much fun. Still, I was looking forward to what RDV Sports and Entertainment Promotions had to offer to fans of my generation. After all, GenXers are proud witnesses to an era of underground rock and progressive music in the Philippines. That and Marlisa’s spectacular win in the recent X Factor. Flight First half of the concert featured Filipinos’ latest pride in Australia. And even with the somber stage lighting, there’s no denying that Marlisa’s vocal prowess is explosive. It erases all doubts cast on her inexperience and youth. It reaffirms why she is the fitting winner of the popular singing competition. Gone are traces of the unsure schoolgirl we followed on primetime television. That night, the 15-year- old Sydneysider showed Melbourne her transformation and how she is ready to soar as an artist with her impressive take on a string of popular songs and classics such as Help, Let It Be and her debut single, Stand By You. Boyzone singer Ronan Keating repeatedly paid tribute to Marlisa’s authenticity. She has the voice that can mesmerise an audience and the rare personality that dispels grand notions of fame. In fact, her childish antics were a breath of fresh air and provided entertainment in between songs. She also radiated gratefulness and repeatedly told fans, “Thank you for making my dream come true.” Rebirth While Marlisa is just starting, Ely Buendia has come a long way in his career. He was frontman to the band, Eraserheads whose phenomenal success dictated a new era in Philippine music. Rock suddenly became mainstream in the 1990s and Eraserheads, the celebrated heroes. Their songs perfectly captured the complicated stories of that generation. Alas, not all good things are bound to last. Eraserheads disbanded at the height of their career. Ely, for the last decade, has been trying to forge an identity of his own with his various collaborations. But that night, he came to Melbourne as the legendary Ely Buendia, a quarter of the four-man band that popularised songs such as Pare Ko, With A Smile and Alapaap. But that is not exactly right. The 44-year-old musician has now traded his jeans and t-shirts for suits and double-breasted jackets. This amid the sweltering weather. Together with his bandmates, he provided a savvy twist to some of Eraserheads’ classics, which entertained a new mix of fans that no longer wish to mosh. There was also his composition with Francis M titled Sukdulan and a cover of Beatles’ Blackbird. Huling El Bimbo, which won the Philippines its first MTV Asian music video award, sealed the night. Journey The concept of an Ely and a Marlisa in one show somehow worked (kudos to producer Dave and gang). I didn’t see two artists who are at separate ends of a spectrum. I saw two artists at their beginning and on a long journey ahead. Yes, even with Ely, whose artistic hunger burns stronger than ever. Other performers on the night were X Factor contestants Mary Ann Van Der Horst and Justin Vasquez, Glenn Orcullo, Dream Academy, Juan, Scotch COKE, Restless Craw and MARCVS. Ed, through EMG Sports and Entertainment Network and with the help of friends, has actively pursued the promotion of Philippine culture and traditions in Australia over the years. “In the past, people have asked me about having an event such as this in the area (Southeast) so we decided to make this a reality. There are a lot of festivals and events in the west side so we thought it would be a good idea to cater to those in the southeast also,” Ed explains. The event was centred at showcasing the various talents in the community, from singers, dancers, bands to former table tennis champions Mark Smythe and Dennis Makaling. Food and dry good stalls bedecked the venue and provided FilAustralian entrepreneurs the opportunity to promote their business. Event highlights Mayor of City of Knox Peter Lockwood and Philippine Consul Felix Pintado commended the celebration organisers and acknowledged the Fil-Australians’ contributions to the community. The much-anticipated At i -At i h a n w o w e d t h e crowd with their elaborate costume and vibrant music. Watching their performance was a first for a couple of people in the crowd. Ed started the Ati-Atihan in Melbourne 17 years ago and since then, the group has garnered recognition and awards like in the Melbourne Moomba Festival. Come day two, a bevy of young men, women and kids participated in the Santacruzan. The religious procession honours the Virgin Mary and reaffirms the Filipinos’ Catholic faith. Ed and his team made the Santacruzan into a festival last year. These pet projects were Ed’s inspirations to the current Philippine festival in the Southeast. A concebrated Mass concluded the event. It was officiated by Fr Alfred Yap with the St. Francis Choir providing the music. Former Philippine Consul Gigi Kalong coordinated the Mass. Attendees agreed that it was a fitting conclusion to the two-day merriment. Entertainment aplenty Mark from Cranbourne came with his family on the second day. It was his first time to attend such an event and he was pleasantly surprised to see how many Filipinos came out to show their support. “It’s nice to see all your kababayans in one place just having fun,” he observed. People from other ethnicity also seemed to have had a good time. Some of them enthusiastically participated in the Zumba routine that was led by instructor Marita. Others stayed throughout the stand-up comedy act, amused at how raucous laughter would erupt from Negi and Pepay’s jokes. The stand-up comedians are part of popular TV comedy programs in the Philippines. Non-speaker of the language got help from friends who eagerly translated all the Tagalog jokes to English for them. Hosts were Jovi Adeva, Vic Valencia, Pauline Edralin and Charlene Sotello. Looking ahead Ed promises an even more exciting festival next year. He happily shares, “All the comments I have received have been all positive. Considering it was our first time hosting this festival, everyone was happy with the outcome. People are definitely looking forward to the event next year.” Apart from the festivity, Ed thinks it is a good venue to impart the Filipino culture and traditions to the young and at the same time, raise funds to support worthy causes and projects. Proceeds from this year’s festival will benefit the Conference on Filipinos Ageing in a Foreign Land that is slated in September 2015. The impressive and goal-driven line-up of the new AFCS Board includes: Chairperson Cynthia Norton (a retired and experienced Executive Secretary with a Foreign Service degree); Managing Director Norminda Forteza (experienced in community services with tertiary qualifications in applied psychology, early childhood and family services, welfare studies, training and assessment, youth training and services, and pastoral care and chaplaincy); Treasurer Ruby Ocampo (experienced laboratory technician and secondary school Physics teacher, business trainer and coach); Secretary Perla Mazie (with her 25 years experience in administration at the Southern Migrant and Refugee Centre, also a qualified community development professional and a qualified bookkeeper); Board Member Liza Chunduri (a qualified training and assessment professional, experienced in children’s services and delivery of various migrant services); and Maria Smith (DEECD secondary school teacher of English-Business Management, also VCE-LOTE Filipino Instructor and Coordinator at the Victorian School of Languages). The positive and more proactive atmosphere during this recent meeting reflects the Board’s unanimous vision-focused and goal-driven approach to a more accountable and transparent AFCS to benefit its members, volunteers and clients in 2015 and beyond. The Managing Director’s Report provides ample evidence of how the AFCS dutifully and efficiently performs its obligations as a service provider particularly for its elderly clients while successfully managing projects through its tireless and committed volunteers. The report, for instance, highlighted the completion of the first AFCS E-News; the completion of JanuaryJune Activity Plan which includes gardening, cooking, arts and crafts, the Memory Lane Café, prayer service and social outings on special occasions); staffing for the HACC meals management, transport and support services, administrative support, volunteer bookkeeping and contracting a service improvement manager and consultant one day a week until June. Other service developments stated in the report included partnership with Hope of Life Baptist Church and an update on Filipinos Ageing in a Foreign Land Project in partnership with the Dementia Society of the Philippines (DSP) whose The new AFCS Board (left to right): Perla Mazie, Ruby Ocampo, Liza Chunduri, Cynthia Norton, Norminda Forteza and Maria Smith. delegates are invited once again to return to Australia for the 2015 conference. As a service provider and volunteer coordinator, the AFCS has through the years, also managed to attend external meetings with the Department of Social Services, the Hampton Park network- ing group, Casey network, the Whitehorse Council and the Springvale Southeast Social Support Network among others. With our growing and continuously diversifying population, 2015 certainly poses more challenges in service provision and deliv- ery. The new AFCS Board is determined to face these challenges while performing its duties and responsibilities in a more accountable and transparent manner, particularly now that it is included in the Australian National Health Services Directory. A simple yet beautifully sacred moment in front of God and an intimate congregation of their nearest and dearest. There were infinitely more memories made that day. But the subtleties were what made it particularly special. Hints of tradition, symbolism and personality. The love entwined within the details. The ceremony was a very personal affair with each of their godchildren playing a special role. Offertory gifts were brought up by their godparents, Roger and Carina Ubay and Angelito and Leonie Lawang as a representation of their generosity, guidance and support. The reception was a jovial outdoor event held at St. Agnes Homestead. Things kicked off with canapes, guests mingling on the tree-lined lawn and playing vintage games and sipping cocktails from the Baravan while serenaded by the upbeat tunes of a live band. Dinner was served in a marquee decorated by the Dela Cruz siblings, their partners and the groomsmen. It took months of preparation to find the right decor. Emotions were high during the speeches with heartfelt words spoken by the parents of the bride, Connie and Rafael and parents of the groom, Celine and Manuel. The impromptu speeches made by their Lola Marta Ramiro and their close friend Lyna Mendoza were also unforgettable and brought tears to the couple’s eyes. With great sincerity, the bride and groom expressed their humble gratitude to the crowd atop the barnyard stables, under the ambience of soft glowing festoon lights and surrounded by the warm energy of their guests. Their speeches may have concluded the formalities, but the party and dancing continued late into the night. The next day, the newlywed couple held an outdoor Paella lunch party at Kyneton Botanical Gardens for all their guests to enjoy and reminisce. For Mark and Clytia, the glow from their wedding set the tone for a loved up happy ever after. The atmosphere was deafening as the Melbourne United Ballers took the victory against the Sydney Kings 95-92. The Kings put up a fight and moved the ball well; their offence had the ball in motion with swift passes, outside shots and fast transitions. Melbourne United is coached by Darryl McDonald (D-Mac) who has played 458 NBL games and captured a few NBL Championships back in 1994, 2006 and 2008. The tide turned after halftime when the Melbourne United Ballers came out with their hustle defence and tenacious rebounding. One of the outstanding players was co-captain Mark Worthington (33), who scored 25 points and has averaged 12.6 points per game throughout the season hitting 48% from the field; finishing off with an average of 7.2 rebounds per contest over the NBL season (27 games) which enabled Worthington to be named the club’s “Most Valuable Player”. It was Melbourne United’s first NBL season with a record of 13-15 win-loss record. The Ballers finished 5th overall on the NBL ladder and just missed the playoffs by only three games. This is a positive sign for basketball fans in Melbourne, as next season Melbourne United will be one of the teams to look out for. 24 www.philtimes.com.au the philippine times MARCH 2015 Calendar of Events 13 March Picnic. The first part of the activity was the presentation of a resource speaker from Diabetes Australia, Ms. Siobhan Walker, who happens to have an Irish background. Topics covered were prevention and management of diabetes. Questionnaires were disseminated to obtain feedback in regard to the outcome of the presentation. The second part was opened by Mrs. Aniceta Z. Esmaquel, foundress and past President of PCSFFI, by giving a brief message on the subject of diversity that no matter what nationalities people belong to everyone is equal and should act as one. Being unified will discourage disparities and conflicts and, thus, bring happiness and peace to all. There was a parade of ladies in national costumes with background music of international songs sung by Leonie Wenden accompanying herself with the guitar. Intermission numbers rendered were Lambada dance performed by four Damayan 2 and FASCOVI members headed by Ms. Fe Palomo (also Treasurer of PCSFFI) and Filipino cultural dance by the FASCOVI dancers. Dancing would not be complete without the line dancing and ballroom dances. File photo 25 26 www.philtimes.com.au the philippine times MARCH 2015 Review Komedi Bar 2015: Laughter and music all-night long Vergie Balanon On 21 February, I spent a date night in a bar. Well, it was not a typical bar that most people go to on a Saturday night, but I guess, served me just the same purpose, which was to unwind. I went to see a Filipino comedy show at Williamstown Town Hall produced by Liz Honey Promotions and Entertainment. Dubbed “Komedi Bar - A New Sketch Comedy and Musical Show”, this was the fifth comedy show I have seen here in Melbourne. When I was in the Philippines, night outs would always include a trip to a comedy show at the Library in Malate or the Music Box in Quezon City. And honestly, there was not a single show where I never actually laughed, enjoyed and had heaps of fun. Kudos to comedians, as making people laugh is not an easy task. Filipino humour is quite different with simple themes, sometimes “green”, amusing punchlines and for some, they may appear offensive. As the Pinoy saying goes, “Talo pikon.” No offence; it’s just for fun. I guess, this was exactly what I expected on the night, same with the hundreds of happy faces and excited crowd inside the hall. A showcase of Melbournebased talents opened the show with captivating performances by Jake Estabillo and Karen Esco. Jake Estabillo, a consistent winner of various local singing competitions, set the mood and captured the audience’s attention to listen to his rendition of a Bee Gee’s fave “Words”. Karen Esco, with her comeback performance of a classic Whitney Houston song “I Have Nothing”, still continued to mesmerise the audience with her soulful voice and unique singing techniques. To cap it all, a duet by both artists with a John Legend hit, “All of Me", was indeed impressive. With performances like these prior to the main event, what a truly fantastic way to kick-off the evening. I not only enjoy the performers but just a note about the structure of the front acts, I appreciated having only two guest performers with a couple of songs each, the spontaneous transitions and the good flow. It was just right for me and the audience to enjoy the moment, witness the talents of the two young artists and not too much to lose the suspense and anticipation for the main event. Then on stage came the guest artists with their grand opening, a musical performance highlighting their vocal abilities. Komedi Bar featured the amazing talents of Pinoy stand-up comedians and singers composed of The Comic Duo Le Chazz and AJ Tamiza, the sweet Petite Brockovich and The Voice Philippines Finalist Yuki Ito. Sing-a-long Nightingale Le Chazz and AJ Tamiza who is known as the Diva with a million voices, are mainstays at the Klownz Comedy Bar in Quezon City. Their comic act depicted a scenario where they tried to outsmart each other and prove who is the best one in terms of educational attainment, school attended, English language abilities, careers and of course, beauty in beauty pageant theme. Le Chazz and AJ not only entertained me and the audience with their humour and charm but also with their amazing singing talents. Le Chazz sang like a nightingale, truly a Lani Misalucha ka-sing-a-like with the Natalie Cole classic “Starting Over Again” which included an audience participation of an Aussie bloke. AJ, on the other hand, proved how he got the title Diva with a million voices as AJ sang Aiza Seguerra’s hit song “Pagdating ng Panahon” impersonating the voices of Aiza Seguerra, Jaya, Jessa Zaragosa, Sharon Cuneta, Nora Aunor, and honestly, I lost count. Comedian-singer Petite Brockovich let loose with the story of Fifi (Felicidad) which blew me and the audience away. Laughter rippled through the crowd as his charm and flair entertained us all narrating the testimony of Fifi, a Pinay house help who was on trial for murder. And an absolute treat on the night was the amazing talent of Yuki Ito, a FilipinoJapanses singer-musician who was a finalist in The Voice Philippines. Yuki Ito is charm and good-looks matched with raspy, soulful voice and highlighted by a flawless falsetto. What made my night was his artistic interpretation of the hit song “Titanium” by David Guetta. Indeed, it was a fantastic way to complete the evening. At the end of the night, it has been a pleasurable experience with overall performances meeting my expectations. It was a funfilled and “tummy-filling” night, too. Aside from the entertainment treat, the audience (and I) also got to enjoy Pinoy food and satisfy our cravings for fish balls, Pinoy BBQ, turon and a lot more with food available for grabs. Komedi Bar was a total treat and mix of two effective stress relievers – laughter and music. Again, it brought me back to memories of my Manila night outs, simple joys of life. Boxing was not my first love… Basketball was my first love.” His eyes lit up and continued to take me through his journey, with the beautiful Melbourne skyline behind us. Fil-Australian Boxer Rey Anton Olarte recently moved from Sydney to Melbourne with his wife Sarah and they are soaking up the Melbourne lifestyle. “Stingrey” (Anton) and I discussed his early start in the sport. “When I first started, I was an orthodox fighter (right handed). But my trainer Mr. Cordero (who was one of Manny Pacquiao’s trainers when Manny was just starting out) taught me to fight southpaw (left handed) and from then on I stayed as a southpaw.” Anton started to gain recognition in the boxing scene in the Philippines, and gained opportunities to fight overseas with some positive results. Anton continued to move up the ranks and worked on his craft, continued to train and exceed his past performance with over 50 professional bouts under his belt. I asked Anton who he looked up to in the sport of boxing. His answer was former Super Featherweight champion Rolando Navarrete, “He fought southpaw and hit his opponents really hard. In basketball, my idol is Dennis Rodman.” This is evident if you watch an Anton Olarte bout; you will see a hard hitting, slick counter puncher with a touch of steel jaw flambouyance. That is one of the reasons why a lot of boxers think twice about getting a rematch. Anton follows the NRL and is a huge South Sydney Rabbitohs fan, as well as the Sydney Swans in the AFL. The lessons that stood out with my conversation with Anton is to have your dream/ vision in front of you at all times. Anton loves to fish in his spare time and owning a fishing boat is a huge motivator for him. There was a clip that Anton showed me Be focused; Be ready in one of his previous bouts where his trainer mentioned the word “fishing boat” in between rounds; you could see the change in Anton’s physiology and he charged out of his seat when the bell rang. The second is to always be ready; even during his off season, Anton still trains and continues to sharpen his skills. In the mornings, he still runs approximately 8 to 10 kilometres and in the afternoon, heads to Glenroy to train with his trainer with whom he gets to do pad work and sparring. On the weekends, he plays basketball for some extra cardio that is why he is always within his weight range and ready to jump in the ring any time. I urge you to support and watch our own Anton “Stingrey” Olarte when he steps in the ring, if you see him jogging in the streets of Melbourne do say hi, he doesn’t bite. Until next time, stay focused! I happened to be in a bookstore one time and I saw a book entitled Why Smart People Make Big Money Mistakes… It kept me thinking. I already lost big money. Am I smart then? Hmmm. All along I thought there’s only one kind of intelligence and that’s the one which is exclusively found in the four corners of the classroom. Until I read Robert Kiyosaki’s financial intelligence in his bestselling book Rich Dad Poor Dad and Daniel Goleman’s Emotional Intelligence. They opened my eyes. Here are my thoughts on both intelligences in the stock market arena. Mind you, being smart and being composed are two different realms. Being smart I was aspiring to be a CFA (Chartered Financial Analyst) before. I thought this could sharpen my mind in selecting stocks, and for career advancement as well. CFAs are wellrespected by many. They are considered experts in finance, just like theologians in Christianity. They undergo rigorous studies. But when I saw its syllabus and the tuition I have to pay, I said thanks, but no thanks. It’s not worth it. I thought I better read all books that I see in bookstores, and in the internet, about Warren Buffett. I better have a personal study on how a billionaire does it, which is not even a subject in CFA. Warren himself recom- mends a book which he admits influenced him a lot. It’s The Intelligent Investor au- thored by his mentor Benjamin Graham himself. If you are not a hardcore reader, he suggests chapters 8 and 20 for you. Plus, I read a research revealing that many CFAs today ignore Graham’s teachings. Many of them base their buy recommendations on recent prices of stocks than on the longterm outlook of businesses. And that’s not how Warren Buffett does it. How then a smart i n v e s t o r l i ke Warren filter g r e a t businesses from the average ones? I discovered two general criteria which I found in the many books I read about Warren and other renowned value investors. First, look for businesses which generate a lot of cash. In the Statement of Cash Flow, see if the ‘Net cash provided by operating activities’ is consistently positive and increasing. Second, compute Return on Equity (ROE). Warren repeatedly mentions this in his annual letter to Berkshire’s shareholders. It tells how the company’s managers utilise shareholders’ resources to generate profits. The higher the ROE, the better. Being composed So, as to the question ‘why do many smart people make foolish financial choices in the stock market?’ Emotion. It’s when emotion overwhelms reason (not only in the stock market I think). Many smart guys just can’t manage their emotions. They panic when they see red, and get too excited when they see green. Further, instead of thinking independently, they follow the crowd. When market nosedives they also want to sell like the rest in the market; when the market skyrockets they also want to buy just like what the rest are doing. This is called irrational behavior. Though many investors proudly admits they are smart, they however behave stupidly most of the time, which costs them money. How do we win then this losers’ game? Have the backbone to buy when the market spirals down. Have the guts to sell when the market is overvalued. Amidst the whirlwinds in the market, stay calm and be a contrarian. That’s emotional intelligence. Warren even suggests to stay calm and hold your stocks of great businesses for long. Absent these characters, you won’t do well in the market over the long haul. Be reminded also of what John Templeton, another successful investor, proclaims: The time of maximum pessimism is the best time to buy, and the time of maximum optimism is the best time to sell.
