About Brancott Estate, Pioneers of Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc History Awards and accolades Chief Winemaker, Patrick Materman Product range Brancott Estate Heritage Centre overview Image library Contact details 1 Brancott Estate is the pioneer of the Marlborough winegrowing region, planting the first Sauvignon Blanc vines on Brancott Vineyard and creating the first Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc, now one of the world’s favourite wine styles. This pioneering spirit and the skill of our winemakers and viticulturists continues to be evident in every bottle, as is the care and respect for the land that allows us to produce each and every one. We seek to give back to the land that creates our wine. We were a founding member of the original sustainable winegrowing initiative established in 1995. All of our vineyards and wineries are accredited under Sustainable Winegrowing New Zealand (SWNZ) and we continue to explore ways to ensure we go above and beyond the accreditation requirements. In 1973, the first grapes were planted at Brancott Vineyard, a decision that went against the popular opinion of the time that the South Island was too cold to grow grapes. Two years later, we planted the first Sauvignon Blanc vines in Marlborough and released the first ever Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc in 1979. Within 10 years, our Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc won the prestigious ‘Marquis de Goulaine trophy for best Sauvignon Blanc’ at the International Wine and Spirits Competition in London, setting the stage for the global recognition of Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc. From a single vision in 1973, our wines are now enjoyed in more than 50 countries and continue to be a benchmark for the regional wine style we pioneered. We’ve continued to explore the potential of our Marlborough vineyards and were the first to plant Pinot Noir and more recently Sauvignon Gris. We have also pioneered new expressions of Sauvignon Blanc, including Brancott Estate Flight, a naturally lighter alcohol, full-flavoured wine range and Brancott Estate Chosen Rows, an iconic, age-worthy Sauvignon Blanc. 2 1973 1975 First commercial planting in Marlborough with 750,000 vines planted in the first season. With the experience of 25 vintages, he has been part of the rapid growth and success of both Brancott Estate wines and the New Zealand wine industry as a whole. At age six, Patrick decided he would study horticulture and embarked on growing flowers, "a Dutch father’s influence," he explains. Floriculture led to viticulture and then to winemaking. On completing his studies, Patrick was drawn to Brancott Estate, which had just won the Marquis de Goulaine trophy for best Sauvignon Blanc (as Montana) at the 21st International Wine & Spirit Competition. Starting as a cellar hand, Patrick progressed to trainee winemaker, then winemaker and in 2001, Winestate Magazine awarded Patrick the ‘New Zealand Winemaker of the Year’ title. Appointed Chief Winemaker in 2009, Patrick has been instrumental in pioneering a number of new wine styles for Brancott Estate, including Brancott Estate Flight, a naturally lighter alcohol wine that is full of flavour; and Brancott Estate Sauvignon Gris, a stunning aromatic wine made from an ancient Bordeaux variety new to Marlborough. One of his most exciting achievements has been crafting Brancott Estate Chosen Rows, a complex, age-worthy Sauvignon Blanc. Eternally curious for opportunities to improve our wines, Patrick is fascinated by the effect of terroir on wine style - seeking to better understand and highlight Marlborough’s subregional differences, as well as the differences between regions. 6 Classic Flight (USA : Flight Song) Representing our most popular varietals, Brancott Estate Classic range is crafted to be the purest expression of classic grape varieties. The cool, sunny climate, rugged topography and young soils of New Zealand combine to produce some of the world’s most distinctive wines. Using grapes harvested earlier in the season and our extensive winemaking expertise, we’ve created Brancott Estate Flight, wines that are full of taste and naturally lighter in alcohol.
